This week we talk about cyclospora, FoodNet, and Taylor Farms.We also discuss iceberg lettuce, Taco Bell, and foodborne pathogens.Recommended Book: Babel by R.F. KuangTranscriptFoodborne pathogens cause about 48 million illnesses and around 3000 deaths in the US alone each year.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the main agency tasked with keeping those numbers as low as possible, and the CDC's Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, or FoodNet, is one way that they've tackled this pernicious, persistent problem since 1995, in partnership with the Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Agriculture, and 10 state health departments: those of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Tennessee.Collectively, this FoodNet network covers about 16% of the US population, which seems like a small number, and in some ways it is, but that grid of laboratories and surveillance sites has typically been capable of detecting foodborne problems before they've scaled-up into something more significant, growing from a localized issue into a nationwide outbreak. They're generally not capable of preventing them outright, but they can keep them relatively small and regionalized.FoodNet was created in response to a series of huge, deadly E. coli outbreaks in 1992 and 1993, and in contrast to other common methods of detection, which are usually passive and thus a little slow to respond to potential outbreak indicators, this program was built around active surveillance methods, which means proactively gathering data from medical treatment records, hospitalizations, and even individual patient outcomes (including their travel history)—anything they can pair with diagnostic samples to better understand the context surrounding the products that contain dangerous pathogens—and this was intended to help them move faster to identify issues, triangulate the source of those issues, and then implement measures to solve these issues before they harm a bunch of people, as happened during another round of E. coli outbreaks in 2012 and 2013, which sickened dozens of people across multiple states, about half of the afflicted requiring hospitalization, in addition to at least one known death.At its height, FoodNet tracked 9 pathogens, so it cast a pretty broad net, encompassing the most common and dangerous of these potential vectors, including listeria, campylobacter, shigella, vibrio, yersinia, cyclospora, cryptosporidium, e coli, and salmonella.In July of 2025, as part of a larger wave of sweeping cuts across the nation's safety nets, tracking systems, and scientific agencies, the CDC, under the second Trump administration, downgraded FoodNet so that it was only mandatory to track salmonella and E coli—the rest were no longer on the docket, because these agencies no longer had the budget to keep tracking them.What I'd like to talk about today is a recent, and as of the day I'm recording this ongoing, outbreak of cyclospora-induced cyclosporiasis, what we know about this outbreak, and what might happen next.—Cyclospora cayetanensis is a protozoan that can infect human beings, and which is usually transmitted via contaminated fruits and vegetables. This contamination is typically the consequence of inadequate sanitation standards, as it's not transmitted via coughing or blood or anything like that, it's carried via human feces.So this parasite gets into a human, sporulates, which means it releases a bunch of spores within its host, and then usually between 1 and 2 weeks after entering its new host, the host develops cyclosporiasis, the disease caused by cyclospora producing all those spores. This disease is notorious for sometimes causing what's colorfully called explosive diarrhea, alongside general watery bowel movements, intense cramping and severe gas and bloating, and that's sometimes paired with nausea, vomiting, fever, and dehydration, due to all the frequent, intense, watery bowel-movement-related output.This is how cyclospora reproduces and spreads: it infects a host, that host has urgent diarrhea for a while, usually more than two days, sometimes as long as several weeks or even a month or more, with all the pain and discomfort and life-disrupting issues you might assume from that sort of persistent symptom, and then it sometimes finds new hosts via that watery output.Sometimes, cyclospora works its way into food systems because sanitation standards at a particular farm will be not good. Specifically, workers will sometimes not be allowed to take restroom breaks, and they'll simply do their business right there in the field; so if they're sick and can't afford to take a sick day, and might be fired if they do, or if they're asymptomatic, which some people infected with cyclospora are, they might do their business in the field, unaware that waste can then go on to spread this pathogen into the food system. It's also possible that someone just doesn't wash their hands properly after using the rest room, and then gets back to work, picking vegetables or operating at some other level along the food processing and packaging assembly line, and it gets into the system that way.In a typical year, the United States records around 2,700 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, though on occasion it's as low as just a few hundred cases, the majority of which show up in health records in the Spring and Summer, between May and August. That range includes relatively mild outbreaks, so while this is a persistent issue, it's also not generally a massive one, at least compared to other pathogens of note. It's not pleasant for those who come down with it, of course, but not something that has triggered an organized response from the top, because of its meager scale, and because (again, while super unpleasant) people with healthy immune systems generally recover without treatment, even if that recovery can take a while. The biggest risk for most people who catch this disease is dehydration, though immunocompromised people are also sometimes given antibiotics by their doctors, the typical dosage curing about 96% of the people who receive it.There was a larger-than-usual outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the US in 2020, which caused a confirmed 1,241 cases across the country, a whole lot to land all at once, and there were no reported deaths resulting from that outbreak. Between 2018 and 2021, there were about 6,000 total confirmed cases across the US, so an average of about 2000 per year.As of mid-July 2026, the CDC has officially confirmed 1,645 cases of this illness, with another 5,100 probable or potential cases currently under investigation. If the majority of those still-under-investigation cases are confirmed, that would mean more people have already been infected as a result of this one outbreak in the first half of 2026 than were infected between 2018 and 2021, which again, is a range that includes the large outbreak that happened in 2020.Also worth noting about those numbers: that's federal-level, CDC reporting, and it's generally understood that there's a significant lag between local-level data and those that have percolated up to the national level. As of the day I'm recording this, Michigan's health agencies alone have more than 5,000 confirmed and suspected cases, Ohio has nearly 1,200, and other states, which are still investigating, are seeing dozens of confirmed cases, including 43 in Wisconsin, 69 in Maryland, and a few already, in the early stages of investigation, in Nevada.Over the past week, officials flagged shredded lettuce sourced from Mexico and sold by a company called Taylor Farms as the likely source of at least some of these cases, and that's led to a recall on lettuce produced by the company in 27 states. Over the weekend, the CDC found cyclospora in iceberg lettuce from the company's Mexican operations, as well, and this lettuce was part of a batch that wasn't included in the recall—so there's a good chance the recall will expand beyond the currently targeted products, which include shredded lettuce destined for Taco Bell locations in five states, and the kitchens of several other fast food chains, as well.Taylor Farms is one of the largest producers of fresh fruits and vegetables in the United States, and their products are sold all over the place, from lower-end fast food restaurants to more expensive grocery stores like Whole Foods.Taylor Foods has announced that it's voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from shelves, even though none of its branded, in-store salad kits have been clearly tied to the outbreak, and Taco Bell has said that it's voluntarily removing all potentially affected lettuce from its locations in the five most-impacted states, indefinitely removing lettuce sourced from the implicated supplier; other brands are following suit, no one wanting to be associated with this outbreak, but everyone wanting to show would-be customers that they're taking it seriously.Interestingly, the FDA doesn't actually require that Taylor Foods tell the public who their products go to—which other entities might be selling infected produce. So they've released lists of product numbers, and again, many of their customers are taking the initiative to announce the removal of this lettuce from their shelves or food, without being prompted, but there's still some fog-of-war here, because of Taylor Foods' decision not to be clearer with that product list.So this is already the largest recorded cyclospora outbreak in US history, there have been 141 confirmed hospitalizations from the CDC, and that number is likely larger, again because it takes a while for state-level numbers to work their way up to the CDC, and to be reconfirmed at that level. Also important to note here is that a lot, perhaps even the majority of people who suffer from cyclosporiasis will never show up in these data, because they just suffer silently, either not realizing they have this parasite, or not seeing the point of going to the hospital, maybe paying an arm and a leg to do so, just to get prescribed anti-diarrheal medication and told to take fluids, same as they can do at home. People who do have any kind of immunodeficiency issues or potentially confounding factors, like being older or very young, are being encouraged to seek medical help, though, as they're more likely to suffer more serious consequences after contracting this disease.It's currently unclear where precisely this outbreak came from, and it's puzzling how an outbreak of this scale might have happened, as, in the words of Matthew Moore, a food safety microbiologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who was quoted in the New York Times, this many infections suggest there was a “massive degree of human fecal contamination.” So probably not just a farm laborer who forgot to wash their hands after using the rest room, something much more substantial than that.Also, because cyclospora takes a while, a week or two, to create enough spores in its host to trigger cyclosporiasis, attribution of the infection difficult, which in turn makes tracking it back to its source difficult; which is part of why this outbreak, which has been going on for weeks, is still under investigation, not a solved problem with definitive answers and in-practice solutions.Right now, experts are recommending higher-risk foods are cooked to at least 158 degrees F, because that temperature kills this pathogen, and washing fresh produce doesn't always get rid of all the cyclospora on a contaminated piece of produce. Washing fresh produce certainly helps, and it's better than nothing, and scrubbing is even better. They also recommend avoiding high-risk foods when possible, though of course that won't always be possible for everyone, nor will it always be possible to get heads of lettuce rather than pre-made salads, though that's also advised when feasible.Also worth noting here is that even if the FoodNet program was still up to full power, tracking all 9 of those original pathogens, it's unlikely this outbreak would have been prevented.It likely would have flagged that something was up earlier on in this outbreak, though, which could have led to faster action in the afflicted regions. Stijn Schmitz welcomes back Steve Hanke back to the show. Steve Hanke is a Professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University. Hanke highlights the two major wars—the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran and the Ukraine war—as critical disruptors of global commodity flows. He notes that the Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed, with Iran controlling it, and the Houthis threaten the Red Sea chokepoint, severely constricting crude and refined product supplies. Russia's cutoff of diesel exports and domestic fuel shortages compound the strain. Oil markets are in backwardation, with spot prices above futures, signaling dangerously low inventories that have cushioned prices so far but are nearing depletion. Hanke warns that once physical inventories run out, oil prices could spike dramatically, potentially later this summer. He advises going long on oil, especially major producers, as a straightforward trade for most investors. On gold, Hanke maintains a bullish outlook, projecting a peak around $6,000 per ounce based on historical ratios to real disposable income. He attributes recent pullbacks to dollar strength and rising interest rates but sees central bank buying as a fundamental driver. He also discusses the pressure on the Fed to monetize debt, which could fuel inflation and support gold. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian 13-year-old girl still captive to Muslim man On July 7, the European Parliament condemned Pakistan for its violation of human rights, citing a 13-year-old Christian Pakistani girl who is still fighting for her freedom from the 30-year-old Muslim man who abducted her, reports International Christian Concern. Maria Shahbaz was kidnapped in July 2025 by Shehryar Ahmad, who forced her to convert to Islam and married her against her will. Alliance Defending Freedom came alongside her parents in their fight to regain custody of their child in Pakistan's Federal Constitutional Court in February. Pakistani law states that a minor cannot legally consent to religious conversion or marriage, but shockingly the court ruled in favor of Ahmad when he presented a forged marriage certificate.  In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Shahbaz's parents are not giving up. They are still appealing their daughter's case in court, hoping that justice will swiftly come.  According to Open Doors, Pakistan is the eighth worst country worldwide for the persecution of Christians. Send a polite, 3-sentence letter to Rizwan Sheikh, the Pakistan Ambassador to America, asking that he intervene.  The address is 3517 International Court NW, Washington, DC 20008. Two U.S. soldiers killed in Iranian attack on military base Two American soldiers were killed on July 17th in an Iranian attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan, reports the Western Journal. In a post on X, U.S. Central Command added, “Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged.” Plus, one soldier is missing. Iran's attacks came after the U.S. launched its seventh consecutive night of air strikes on Iran. Iran makes chilling death threats against President Trump Iranian state media has published a shocking video entitled “Where to kill Trump?”, claiming to know the U.S. leader's motorcade route and the vulnerabilities within his security, reports The Express. The highly concerning footage claimed to reveal “information on the whereabouts of the terrorist president of America” while promising that “access to Trump is possible in these places.” It also alleges to give details about the motorcade that protects the U.S. president, which typically consists of 40 to 50 vehicles. It comes after repeated death threats have been made by Iran following the U.S. assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.  President Trump's primetime speech on election integrity Last Thursday night, President Donald Trump addressed election security in a nationwide primetime address from the White House, pointing to ways American political leftists and China have compromised our elections, reports The Epoch Times. TRUMP: “You can't have a great country without free and fair elections. All we want is honesty in our elections. Great damage has been done to our country. Our elections were left vulnerable to being rigged and stolen, and the trust of the American people was lost. This cannot be allowed to continue. “Every American -- whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or otherwise -- should be able to agree that we deserve the most secure, honest, and fair election system anywhere in the world.” President Trump explained that China started compromising our elections in 2020. TRUMP: “Over a period of years, starting during the 2020 election cycle, the People's Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China's illicit acquisition of 220 million U.S. voter files. That information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, political party preferences, and other sensitive data that would be needed to register to vote. “This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare. The intelligence even shows that China assigned a data exploitation unit specifically to this new project.” And finally, President Trump vowed action to hold people accountable. TRUMP: “The documents we will release, starting tonight, have been gathered by the White House Government Transparency Task Force, a great group of people, supported by our top intelligence agency chiefs, who have all personally reviewed the findings we are presenting this evening and fully confirmed their authenticity. “You can see these documents for yourself at whitehouse.gov. That's whitehouse.gov. Go check it out. Our purpose in disclosing this information is not to weaken confidence in election, but to earn that confidence by confronting vulnerabilities and correcting them very, very quickly, and that's what we're doing.” Homeland Security Secretary vows to prosecute illegal voters In related news, during a Friday press briefing, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin promised to hunt down and prosecute illegal voters in the U.S., noting that 250,000 non-citizens are illegally registered to vote in just four states, reports The Christian Post. Speaking in the wake of President Donald Trump's 25-minute primetime address about election security on July 16th, Mullin outlined an aggressive plan to tighten voter roll integrity, harden election infrastructure, and hold election officials accountable for alleged failures. Senator Marsha Blackburn: No more birth tourism Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee has reintroduced legislation aimed at ending so-called “birth tourism” following the Supreme Court's recent 6-3 ruling in Trump v. Barbara. It held that children born in the United States to illegal aliens and foreign tourists remain entitled to birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, reports Big League Politics. She said, “Congress must step up to the plate to protect the integrity of American citizenship.” The Ban Birth Tourism Act is co-sponsored by GOP Senators Ted Budd of North Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Tim Sheehy of Montana, Jim Banks of Indiana, and Rick Scott of Florida. The legislation would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly prohibit foreign nationals from obtaining temporary visas for the purpose of giving birth in the United States. It would also classify birth tourism as a deportable offense, allowing immigration authorities to remove foreign nationals who enter the country for that purpose. Samaritan's Purse deployed disaster relief unit for Texas flood victims On July 17th, churches in the Texas Hill Country opened their doors as flood displacement shelters, taking in families whose homes and recreational vehicles had been swept away by rapidly rising rivers that killed at least two people, reports The Christian Post. Recently more than 30 inches of rain fell over several days, causing the Leona River and Guadalupe River to overflow. Floodwaters surged through the streets, destroying homes, and stranding people and vehicles. The Christian relief group Samaritan's Purse said it was deploying a disaster relief unit to the Hill Country, with staff and volunteer teams set to work in Uvalde County. The group said it was basing operations out of Uvalde Methodist Church, with volunteers beginning on Sunday to help residents remove waterlogged belongings and clear mud from their homes. Lessons in Sailing Upwind William D. Parker, July 9, 2026 When my friend Dave Sandowich, a retired principal with 20+ years of admin experience, invited me to go sailing with me off the Chesapeake Bay, I was thrilled. This would be the third time he had taken me on the water, and my son Jack, now 20 years old, was coming along. We sailed 60 miles over three days, from Dave's place on Kent Island to Annapolis, Maryland, and then south to a quiet cove. Sailing upwind was the most challenging and exhilarating part of the trip. Calm waters and quiet moments were nice too, but Dave was quick to point out that sailing upwind takes work – a mastery of understanding the sail and jib, the use of crewmates to help you come about, and knowledge and skill to stay on track. As Dave told me the first time we sailed together in 2019, “Sailing is a lot like leadership,” he said. “On a sailboat your destination may be directly from where the wind is coming from. A sailboat can't sail directly into the wind but it can work its way up wind by sailing at angles off the wind and working its way up wind to the destination. It is more work and will take more time but you will get there if you stay the course, apply your sailing knowledge and get the feedback from your instruments and instincts and adjust along the way.” Whenever I think about resistance in leadership, I think about sailing into the wind. Leaders have a destination in sight for their teachers, students and communities. The question is: what do you do when you experience pushback and resistance toward reaching those goals. What has facing resistance taught you? This week, I met with a group of leaders for a retreat, and I posed that question to them. Some of their responses included: “Pushback causes me to reassess my own understanding of mission and vision and if I'm effectively and clearly communicating it with others.” “Perhaps there is misunderstanding or misrepresentation of our goals that I need to recommunicate.” “It's my responsibility to realign expectations while keeping in mind that relationships are complex. Reaching my goal may not be a straight shot. Sometimes I have to work with people until they come around to a clearer perspective.” “Leadership is more like chess than checkers. It requires wisdom to know how to maneuver among people and systems while still reaching the right outcome.” Each one of these statements reminds me that the work of leaders is complex, and navigating complexity takes more than just a good handbook or code of conduct. It requires wisdom to step into the complexities and determine the next best step for moving forward. Having said that, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind as you sail a route in the coming school year: People – Investing in people means taking time to know who is on your team, gaining their trust, and remembering that development is not a one time event. Systems – Developing systems means analyzing your operations, processes, routines, and procedures in light of your students, teachers, and community members. Ask yourself what it is like to be on the other side of any activity at your school. How are you aligning the system involved for the outcome you want them to experience? Belief – Encouraging collective efficacy among your team members means being clear on what you believe is most important for the outcomes and impact happening around student learning. These three reminders bring us back to commitments to people, systems, and belief – the essentials for any flourishing school community. Anyone trying to navigate or move forward an entire organization or community must be prepared to face some winds of resistance. You can either allow the pushback to cause you to throw anchor, drop sails, or turn around. Choose Your Hard Our last day together, Dave and Jack and I were having breakfast together, when I asked Dave what were some lessons in leadership he's learned along the way. Dave is enjoying retirement and a lot of time on his boat with family and friends. When I asked him what lessons he was learning, he looked at me and Jack and said, “You have to learn to choose your hard.” “What do you mean by that?” I asked. “Take my physical fitness, for example,” he continued. “I choose the hard by keeping my workout routine. I don't really want to do pullups, planks and pushups, but I choose that hard over the hard of declining health, higher blood pressure, or losing my mobility over time. You choose your hard one way or the other.” Life and leadership teach us a lot of lessons along the way if we slow down enough to listen and reflect. In leadership, the harder and wiser option often requires sailing into the winds of resistance. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it by default. But good outcomes often require hard choices. When I think about the goal of schools to build a community of learning, I'm encouraged that the task is worth it for students, for teachers, and for communities. It's also worth it for leaders. On our last day of sailing, Dave navigated the boat back toward Kent Island. He gave each of us a turn at the helm. I tried to soak in the memories of sun, waves, and the warmth of friendship and family. Your school year ahead will be full of unexpected situations, and the truth is: you don't choose the winds you encounter. But you can choose how you respond to them. As you sail into the winds of a new school year, may you learn to pivot, to navigate, and to recalibrate along the way. The destination and experiences you reach will look different in each journey, but the mindset you have along the way may be what makes all the difference. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: January, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness moves from ghost camels haunting the Arizona desert to corpses that kept making history after death, a Baltimore poisoning that gripped a courtroom for weeks, a professor fooled by carved stones, a child's murder in the Thames that London police have never solved, a Tokyo geisha who killed the man she loved, and a glowing-eyed creature on an English canal bridge.It opens in the American southwest, where the U.S. War Department imported some seventy-two camels in 1857 to haul supplies, only to turn the animals loose in the desert when the Civil War broke out and the soldiers tired of their foul temper and habit of spooking horses. Wild camels roamed Arizona for decades afterward, and one became legend as the Red Ghost — a beast blamed for trampling a woman to death in 1883 and later seen carrying a dead man lashed to its back, a rider who eventually decayed until a human skull dropped from the saddle in front of a group of startled prospectors. An Arizona farmer finally shot the animal in 1893, still wearing the leather straps that had held its corpse rider in place.From there the episode turns to figures who kept shaping the world after they died. A gang of Chicago counterfeiters led by "Big Jim" Kennally plotted in 1876 to steal Abraham Lincoln's body from his Springfield tomb and ransom it for a jailed engraver, foiled by a Secret Service informant working for the very agency Lincoln himself had signed into existence. A grave robber broke into George Washington's crypt at Mount Vernon in 1830 hunting the president's skull and made off with the wrong one. The British philosopher Jeremy Bentham left instructions to have his body dissected and mummified, and it sits on display at University College London to this day. And in the ninth century Pope Stephen VI dug up his predecessor Formosus, dressed the rotting corpse in papal vestments, propped it up for trial, found it guilty, and had it thrown into the Tiber.Next comes Baltimore in 1871, where Elizabeth Wharton, a respected society widow, hosted General William Scott Ketchum in her home on Hamilton Place until he fell suddenly ill and died with twenty grains of tartar emetic in his stomach — fifteen is enough to kill. Police discovered she had bought sixty grains days earlier, and a financial advisor named Eugene Van Ness nearly died the same way after she served him a drink. Her forty-two-day poison trial in Annapolis exhausted the medical and chemical experts of the day, and after deliberating through the night the jury acquitted her of murder.The episode then crosses to Germany, where Johann Beringer, a celebrated professor at the University of Würzburg, spent 1725 collecting strange carved stones dug up on Mount Eibelstadt by teenage boys he had hired — figures of birds, lizards, comets, and the name of God rendered in Hebrew. Convinced they were the handiwork of God himself, he published a book on them called the Lithographiae Wirceburgensis, only to learn the nearly two thousand stones had been planted by two envious colleagues, J. Ignatz Roderick and Johann Georg von Eckhart, who thought him an arrogant know-it-all and wanted to humble him.From an academic hoax the episode moves to an unsolved horror. On September 21st, 2001, a child's headless, limbless torso surfaced from the Thames near the Globe Theatre, wrapped in orange cloth, and London's Metropolitan Police could give the boy no name but Adam. Forensic analysis of poison and minerals in his remains traced him to the Benin region of Nigeria and showed he had been paralyzed and drained of blood in what investigators believed was a muti ritual killing. Nelson Mandela made an international appeal for information, and traffickers including Kingsley Ojo and a caregiver named Joyce Osagiede were investigated, but no one has ever been convicted and the boy's true identity has never been confirmed.The episode carries that darkness into 1936 Tokyo, where Sada Abe strangled her lover Kichizo Ishida in an inn after a days-long affair, then took a kitchen knife to his body and carried a severed part of him away in her handbag. Her capture two days later set off a national obsession the papers called "Sada mania," and her testimony about killing the man she refused to share became a bestseller in a country where such candor was scandalous. She was sentenced to six years, served her time as a model prisoner, and vanished from public life sometime after 1970.The episode closes on a cold English night in January 1879, when a furniture hauler crossing Bridge 39 over the Shropshire Union Canal near the village of Ranton was charged by a shaggy, ape-like creature with glowing eyes that leapt onto his cart and terrified his horse. When he swung his whip at the thing, the lash passed straight through its body, and the creature bolted down toward the canal and vanished. The folklorist Charlotte Burne later learned from the village constable that the sightings had begun only days after a man drowned in that same canal, in a place where people believed a violent death could send someone back in the shape of a beast.

We're back on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, and tonight we're pulling into Maryland, home of one of the most famous roadside monsters in America. In November of 1971, a family in Old Bowie went searching for a missing puppy named Ginger and found her decapitated near the railroad tracks off Fletchertown Road.Within weeks, a small-town newspaper headline reading "Residents Fear Goatman Lives" had grown into Washington Post coverage of a six-foot hairy creature walking upright through the Prince George's County woods, and the Maryland Goatman was born. In this episode, I trace the legend all the way back to its documented beginnings, from a 1971 college folklore project and the mad-scientist rumors surrounding the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center to the goat herder, the hermit, and the axe-wielding thing said to stalk lovers' lanes and Crybaby Bridge.I walk through the classic encounters the way the county has told them for fifty years, hooves on the blacktop behind a parked car, an axe blade in a door panel, screams over the campsites, and then I put on my old badge and show you what the evidence actually supports. From there the road trip goes deeper into Maryland's monster file, because the witnesses in 1971 never described a goat at all.They described a Bigfoot. We cover the Dwayyo attack outside Gambrill State Park in 1965, the Sykesville Monster flap of 1973 with its thirteen-inch footprint cast and Baltimore Zoo examination, a fisherman's daylight sighting on the Patapsco in 1981, the Harewood Park Monster, the Eastern Shore reports, and the giant that construction crews reported at the Arundel Mills site in 2000.
