Dhillon told the Just the News, No Noise television show on Wednesday night. “And the goal is to cram as many people on there and make voters who are not particularly engaged, make it easy for someone else to help them fill out their ballot and return it for them when they didn’t care enough to do it themselves,” she added. “What we can do at the federal government level is ensure that our federal election laws are observed, and that includes each state’s requirement to keep clean voter rolls,” she added. “That is a fundamental basic.” Dhillon spoke one day after her division filed lawsuits against six Democrat-run states — Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Washington state and Vermont — seeking to compel them to turn over to the DOJ their voter rolls to be inspected for abnormalities, outdated names or noncompliant names. She also struck a deal last week with North Carolina to force it to review and fix over 100,000 voters’ names on rolls in that battleground state that were added without complying with state law. Dhillon said her office is now on track to force through litigation, settlement or voluntary efforts at least 26 states to clean up voter rolls. “We’re now in litigation with 14 states. So the six yesterday included Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Washington State and Vermont. That adds to eight we already had going,” she said. The defendant, Jeremiah Sweeney, had been convicted by a Maryland jury of second‑degree murder (among other crimes. After his conviction was affirmed on direct appeal and a state post‑conviction relief effort failed, Sweeney filed a federal habeas petition. He argued that his criminal trial counsel had been constitutionally ineffective. Specifically, his claim was that after one juror (Juror 4) visited the crime scene on his own initiative — and was subsequently dismissed — counsel should have asked to voir dire (i.e. question) the remaining jurors to assess whether any had been tainted by that visit. The lower federal district court denied habeas relief. But the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit reversed and ordered a new trial — even though the theory they relied on (ineffective counsel for not voir‑direing the full jury) was one Sweeney never had raised. Thus, the core issue before the Supreme Court was whether the Fourth Circuit acted properly in granting habeas relief — i.e., ordering a new trial — on a claim that was never presented by the defendant, in violation of the “party‑presentation principle.” In a unanimous, per curiam decision issued November 24, 2025, the Court reversed the Fourth Circuit's decision and remanded the case.  The Court held that the Fourth Circuit “departed dramatically from the principle of party presentation” by granting habeas relief based on a claim that the petitioner never had presented. In other words: courts should not raise new arguments or theories unprompted by the parties. Dale asks Kevin for his perspective on the team switch at Dale Earnhardt Inc., which stemmed from a falling out with Eury Jr. They also chat about Dale and Eury Jr. leaving for Hendrick Motorsports, and Kevin's decision to stay loyal to DEI. At the professional level as a player, Gait has won three NLL titles (1991, 1994, 1995), three MLL titles, (2001, 2002, 2005), three Mann Cups (1991, 1997, 1999), the Heritage Cup (2004) and the ILF World Championship (2006). Gait is currently the men's lacrosse coach at Syracuse University, whom he led to the 2025 NCAA Final Four. Prior to coaching the men, he spent 14 years as the Head Coach of Women's lacrosse at Syracuse and turned the team into a national powerhouse, reaching three national title games, including in the 2021 season. He also coached Team Canada to the U20 Men's World Championship in 2025. This Day in Legal History: Morgan v. VirginiaOn December 3, 1946, the NAACP filed the pivotal case Morgan v. Virginia, challenging state-enforced segregation on interstate buses. The case arose after Irene Morgan, a Black woman, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Greyhound bus traveling from Virginia to Maryland in 1944. Arrested and fined under Virginia law, Morgan appealed her conviction with the support of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Thurgood Marshall, who would later become the first Black Supreme Court Justice, argued the case before the U.S. Supreme Court.The legal argument hinged on the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which grants Congress—not individual states—the power to regulate interstate commerce. Marshall argued that Virginia's segregation law placed an undue burden on interstate travel and was thus unconstitutional. In a 7–1 decision issued in June 1946, the Court agreed, holding that states could not impose segregation on interstate passengers.Though the ruling did not end segregation on all public transportation, it was a critical legal breakthrough. It limited the reach of Jim Crow laws and marked one of the earliest Supreme Court victories for the civil rights movement. The decision also served as a foundation for future rulings, including Boynton v. Virginia (1960), and inspired direct action like the Freedom Rides of the early 1960s.Morgan v. Virginia helped establish a constitutional framework for challenging racially discriminatory laws under federal authority. It demonstrated the NAACP's strategy of incremental legal challenges and the importance of judicial victories in the broader civil rights struggle.A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a law that would strip Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood and similar organizations in 22 states. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the provision, part of the Republican-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, likely violates the Constitution's Spending Clause by retroactively imposing ambiguous conditions on state Medicaid participation. The law bars Medicaid funding for nonprofit reproductive health providers that offer abortions and received over $800,000 in Medicaid funds during fiscal year 2023.Talwani issued a preliminary injunction, temporarily halting the law's enforcement in the states that sued, including California, New York, and Connecticut, along with the District of Columbia.
