Newt talks with Jack Salmon, Gibbs Scholar and Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. They discuss the introduction of wealth taxes in several U.S. states, including California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, and Washington, which are targeting high net worth individuals. This has led to a migration of wealthy individuals to states with no such taxes, like Florida and Texas. Washington State, which previously had no income tax, has introduced a 9.9% tax on income over a million dollars, contributing to a significant exodus of high earners, including notable figures like Jeff Bezos. Their discussion highlights the economic consequences of such tax policies, including the loss of tax revenue and potential negative impacts on local economies. The also discuss the importance of fiscal responsibility at the state level and the need for states to prepare for potential federal funding reductions based on the increasing national debt.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The advent of newer thrombectomy devices has turned what were once hours-long surgical cutdowns into endovascular cases that last under an hour. In this episode of BackTable, host Dr. Sabeen Dhand is joined by Dr. Shang Loh from the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Khanjan Nagarsheth from the University of Maryland to discuss the evolution of arterial thrombectomy devices and modern techniques for acute arterial occlusions. --- This podcast is supported by: Inari Medicalhttps://www.inarimedical.com/artix-system --- SYNPOSIS The episode highlights major technological advancements over the past decade, including the development of mechanical and computer-assisted thrombectomy systems. The physicians review key features of newer devices, such as the ability to combine aspiration with stent retrievers, the use of PTFE baskets to reduce distal embolization, and the advantage of maintaining wire access throughout the case. They share strategies for managing specific cases, including acute femoral-popliteal occlusions with distal reconstitution, intraoperative ischemic pain due to flow arrest, trauma-related thrombosis, and cases complicated by extensive calcification and chronic vascular disease. As vascular surgeons, they also discuss the ongoing role of open approaches, outlining when surgical cutdown is indicated and where they prefer endovascular first. Cats are the most commonly owned pet in the United States — and yet they're dramatically underrepresented in veterinary visits compared to dogs. One big reason? The vet experience is often so stressful for cats, and so difficult for the people trying to handle them, that owners simply stop bringing them in.Today we're exploring the science and the solutions behind feline stress in clinical settings — why cats react the way they do, what that behavior is actually communicating, and how veterinary teams can create environments where cats feel safer.Joining us is Dr. Renee Rucinsky, a board-certified feline specialist, owner of Mid Atlantic Cat Hospital and Mid Atlantic Feline Thyroid Center in Maryland, and a respected voice in feline medicine through her lecturing and writing. Thanks for tuning in to the Purr Podcast with Dr. Susan and Dr. Jolle! If you enjoyed today's episode, don't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave us a review—it really helps other cat lovers and vet nerds find the show. ABOUT THIS MESSAGE Have you ever been in a meeting and thought, “Why am I here? This could've been an email.” We've all been there. But the gathering of the church was never meant to feel like that. In this message, we explore why the church was never about attendance—it has always been about assignment. When believers gather, something shifts. Life flows through connection, and when we stay connected to the body of Christ, we stay connected to the source God designed to strengthen us. Your life isn't just being lived… it's being displayed. God designed the church to be a showcase of His wisdom so the world can see that His ways actually work. This message will challenge the way you think about church, connection, and the role you play in what God is doing—because this has never just been a meeting. It's a movement. ABOUT UNION CHURCH We exist for one thing: to help unite people with purpose. At Union Church, we believe heaven can be experienced on earth when people live intentional and purposeful lives submitted to God's Word. It speaks volumes when an urban planner, an expert in housing, community and economic development who has served in leadership positions in the federal government, national nonprofit intermediaries, and in a community-based Latino serving organization decides that his passion lies in working at the hyper-local level with communities that are often underserved and underestimated. Manuel Ochoa, my guest on this week's episode of Power Station, launched Ochoa Urban Collaborative in 2019 to support the change making aspirations of marginalized communities in the US and globally. He shares his contributions to the Purple Line Corridor Coalition, a public-private and community partnership, supported by the University of Maryland's National Center for Smart Growth, whose mission is to ensure that the state's largest transit investment is designed and implemented with equity as its North Star. Manuel focuses on the scores of small businesses along the Corridor, mostly immigrant owned, that managed to survive the pandemic and are now navigating an economic downturn and the White House's anti-immigrant agenda. And we talk about the role of the arts in community development and more personally, in Manuel's life.

Even after the suspect is found dead and the manhunt ends, the most important answer never comes, leaving investigators and the public with a case that remains unresolved where it matters most.

Pigweed and Crowhill drink and review Lindemans Pecheresse, a Belgian Fruit Lambic, then discuss the show's uncanny ability to predict the future. In this episode we update past topics and predictions. An earlier show discussed kill switches and cameras in cars. There have been some developments to that story. On the show where we questioned whether psychiatry is science (mostly it isn't), the boys asked if it was time to bring back involuntary commitment. We also discussed the over-prescription of psychiatric drugs and the interesting correlation between mental health and going to church. Pigweed called attention to the problem of cousin marriage, and what do you know? -- Britain is experiencing a huge rise in birth defects as a result of cousin marriage from Pakistani immigrants. At peak trans madness, the boys predicted a time when the monsters who are promoting this barbarity were fined and jailed. We're starting to see it happen. Recently, some of these ghoulish doctors were fined millions of dollars for performing a double mastectomy on a child. The boys did a show calling out gerrymandering foolishness, but Maryland is still going full speed ahead. To "protect democracy," of course. Another show on Persia predicted the bombs would start dropping within ten days. That prediction was exactly right. They also predicted that the regime will fall in two months. That prediction is still outstanding. The boys discuss the ongoing Iran war. Re: the infrastructure show we update the "sewage in the Potomac" story and wonder again why the "mainstream press" is so uninterested. We recap the Julian Assange and Edward Snowden situation. Trump is now considering pardoning them and then bringing them in to help expose corruption inside the intelligence system. That would be interesting. The show ends with a letter from long-time listener and contributor JR about whether Social Security is a Ponzi scheme.
