Most People Don't... But You Do!

When Andrea Driessen and Bart sat next to each other at IMEX, the conversation didn't begin with sales, logistics, or “What do you need?” Instead, Andrea asked something rare: “Tell me more about you.” That moment became the spark for this deeply meaningful episode. Andrea is the Founder of Grace Notes, an author, TED/TEDx speaker, longtime entrepreneur, and former ownerof a speakers bureau. Today, she's leading a global movement to help people experience something precious while they're still here: a living eulogy. In this powerful conversation, Andrea shares:Why people feel invisible at work and in lifeHow “messages of mattering” transform confidence, culture, and connection her father's 11-word note that changed everythingThe four roadblocks stopping people from expressing appreciationWhat happens when we wait too longthe extraordinary riffle effect of a handwritten Garce NoteYou'll hear emotional stories, practical tools, and reminders that we simply can't afford to postpone what matters most. This episode is a masterclass in noticing, appreciating, and expressing the good in others before it's too late. Major Takeaways / Learnings1. We must not wait.Life changes without warning. A grace note written today can become someone's anchor tomorrow. Bart shares his “blue screen of death” metaphor and his own heart-attack anniversary to reinforce the message: Don't wait.2. People feel unseen, more than we realize.A third of employees feel invisible at work. Half feel undervalued. Women especially feel unseen. Grace Notes offer a simple, profound antidote.3. A “living eulogy” shifts how people view their impact. Most people don't know the good they bring to others until they're gone. Grace Notes allow us to tell them now when they can internalize it, live into it, and be changed by it.4. Four roadblocks stop people from expressing appreciation.Andrea identifies the big four:Lack of timeEmotional bandwidthFear of awkwardnessNot knowing what to sayShe gives tools to overcome each one.5. Handwritten matters.A physical note becomes a keepsake, a reminder, a reassurance. People keep them on walls, drawers, binders—sometimes for decades.6. Brave moves build brave lives.Andrea shares the 11-word note from her father:“I'm in awe of my kid doing such a brave thing.”She still has it on her wall—even now.7. Attention is one of the purest forms of love. When we fully “erase ourselves” and focus on others, we give the rarest human gift: presence without agenda.8. Meaning > Matter.People don't need more things. They need more meaning. Messages of mattering help create it. Memorable QuotesFrom Andrea:“We shouldn't have to be dead to hear our eulogy read.”“People feel invisible. A simple note can change their day, their career, their life.”“We overthink what to write and underestimate its impact.”“The attention we give one another is our greatest form of love.”“If we don't believe in the value of our work, no one else will.”From Bart:“Most people don't… but you do.”“Don't wait to say I love you. Don't wait to send the note.”“The universe is meeting you where you are because your intention is pure.”“You don't need the applause, you need the impact.”Why It Matters1. Start your own Grace Note practice today.Pick one person. Write 3–4 sentences. Send it. Don't overthink.2. Create a “Kudos File” or “Brag Box.”Keep the notes others send you. Pull them out on the tough days.3. Use the “habit swap” method.Swap one episode of Netflix, one social scroll, one distraction—for a Grace Note.4. Schedule a monthly “Grace Note Meeting” with yourself.A simple recurring calendar block. 10–20 minutes. It changes relationships.5. Lead with meaning. In leadership, sales, family, and friendships:People remember how you made them feel seen.6. Practice presence.Erase yourself—focus solely on the human in front of you.Resources;Connect to: Andrea Driessen | LinkedInWebsite: Keynote Speaker | Gracenotes

Today's poem is The Eulogy I Didn't Give (I) by Bob Hicok. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes … “I'm here, and you're here, so I'd call us “poetry people.” But even people who don't think of themselves as “poetry people,” people who don't spend time with poetry each day, do turn to poems when they're grieving or celebrating: at weddings, funerals, and other occasions that call for something more than we're able to achieve with our own words. Grief, love, longing, gratitude—these are universal human emotions, and yet they are difficult to articulate! More than any genre, perhaps, poetry can help us say the unsayable. It helps to let poets take the reins.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp

Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 movie "Hardball." They introduce the film (1:34), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (8:14). In Amount of Baseball (17:50), the scouts initially disagree, but slightly convince each other. Ellen has two potential player comps. Baseball Accuracy (25:26) compares this Little League play to other films, with just a couple of editorial / geographical issues. Ellen defends Frank Thomas's honor and digs in on Sammy Sosa's consecutive homers, and records by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly, and Kevin Mench. That is not Wrigley. Those are not NBA games. Luis Garcia's dance step is considered. Storytelling (39:23) is a real challenge, when the entire inveterate gambler storyline does not work. Plus, white savior problems, a very confusing moral, and a complete lack of necessary exposition. There are so many unanswered questions. How does he earn their trust? Why does G-Baby have to die? Eulogy issues, uniform issues. At long last, the Score Tool (1:24:13) is only a partial respite, with some small problems of its own. They consider some of the soundtrack songs, including "Ghetto," "Hardball," "Big Poppa," "Where the Party At," and R. Kelly. Acting (1:30:21) considers the ceiling and floor of a slightly mis-cast Keanu Reeves. Diane Lane was trying, John Hawkes had an impossible task, D.B. Sweeney deserves better. Young actors Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Hearne, Julian Griffith, and DeWayne Warren almost save the movie. Neither Delightfulness of Catcher (1:39:26) or Delightfulness of Announcer (1:40:27) offer much. In Lack of Misogyny (1:41:00), they discuss the insipidity of the lame romantic subplot. Is there any scriptural basis for this type of recognition of a man entering heaven?   The hero worship grates on me. I'm a widow; all men die. Some men fought for our country; others were martyred. This type of eulogy detracts from my Savior, the one who died for all of us.  Summary In this episode of Ask Dr. E, a listener raises a question following the passing of John MacArthur: is there biblical basis for imagining heaven giving a standing ovation when a well-known Christian leader arrives?  Dr. E explains that while it is appropriate to acknowledge the ministry impact of faithful men and women, Scripture makes it clear—Christ alone is the hero. Hero worship, even in subtle forms, distracts from the glory of God. Mature Christians know that heaven is not about applause for accomplishments but worship of the triune God. From church history, we can honor figures like D.L. Moody, Charles Spurgeon, and Billy Graham, but even their legacies fade with time. In contrast, God calls His people not to fame or recognition but to faithfulness. Dr. E reminds us that heaven is not about eulogizing human achievement but magnifying Christ. Our calling is simple: be faithful servants of Christ. Whether known by millions or by a few, believers are celebrated in the right way only when Christ is the focus. God does not ask us to be successful—He asks us to be faithful. Takeaways Hero worship in the church can easily distract from Christ as the true focus. Eulogies should highlight faith in Christ, not human accomplishment. Scripture shows that Christ does not share His glory or worship. God uses flawed people, but their legacies ultimately fade with time. True recognition in heaven is given to faithful servants of God. God calls His people to faithfulness, not worldly success. Tucker Carlson has been at the center of controversy this week after speaking at the memorial service for Charlie Kirk. During his eulogy, Carlson compared Kirk's assassination to the death of Jesus Christ and made remarks that have been widely criticized as antisemitic. These comments drew condemnation from organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League, with critics arguing that his statements dangerously reinforced harmful stereotypes and historical narratives about Jews. The far-right commentator Nick Fuentes—a frequent critic and rival of Carlson—took to his own podcast to mock the speech, sarcastically pleading with Carlson to “tone down” allegedly antisemitic rhetoric, and portraying Carlson's remarks as “overkill” even by Fuentes' extreme standards. Fuentes repeatedly exaggerated Carlson's actual words, turning their ongoing feud into a spectacle within the conservative media sphere. The fallout from the memorial speech has sparked renewed debate over Carlson's influence on the right and his place in conservative media. Prominent commentators have questioned whether Carlson is pushing boundaries for shock value or genuinely espousing increasingly extreme positions. In recent months, Carlson has also feuded with other right-wing media figures like Candace Owens, and some conservatives feel that Fuentes, despite his notorious background, has managed to gain ground in their back-and-forth exchanges.Meanwhile, Carlson's own media empire continues to expand. He has remained active with “The Tucker Carlson Show” and is frequently at the forefront of major conservative events, stepping in for figures like Charlie Kirk, further solidifying his role as a leading voice in right-wing political commentary. His interviews continue to drive headlines, with his recent sit-down with Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger generating buzz. Sanger, a critic of Wikipedia, shared his concerns about the site's reliability in a conversation with Carlson, sparking debate over how mainstream digital platforms shape public information.Carlson has also responded to global news events, notably discussing claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding his influence over Donald Trump and America. Carlson expressed concern over foreign leaders purportedly boasting about their ability to “censor Americans” and shape discourse, adding to his longstanding skepticism about foreign involvement in U.S. policy and media.Reactions to Carlson's recent actions vary widely. On one side, far-right figures has amplified Carlson's rhetoric as emblematic of a new, less restrained conservative movement. On the other, organizations focused on extremism and antisemitism have sounded alarms about the possible consequences of his statements, arguing they reinforce divisive conspiracies and encourage hostile attitudes in public discourse.Legally and professionally, there have been no direct lawsuits or investigations into Carlson himself in the past few days. However, his remarks at Kirk's memorial and ongoing disputes with other right-wing personalities place him under intense scrutiny, with many observers questioning how his influence might shape debates on media ethics, extremism, and the direction of conservative politics.Carlson's interactions with other public figures in recent days, from sparring with Fuentes to engaging with controversial guests on his show, underscore his central role in many of the polarized conversations shaping the current media landscape. There's a growing discussion about whether Carlson is exacerbating divisions for attention and influence, or if he genuinely represents a significant pivot further right within mainstream conservative circles. Thanks for listening to the Tucker Carlson News Tracker podcast and be sure to subscribe. Tucker Carlson made a high-profile public appearance just days ago, delivering a widely discussed eulogy for Charlie Kirk at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Carlson's remarks were emotional and direct, sharply praising Kirk's leadership, faith, and willingness to challenge convention, and he used the platform to reinforce themes of free speech, dissent, and the importance of individual conviction. Video and commentary from the memorial circulated broadly, prompting both support and criticism across media, with some hailing Carlson's reflections as heartfelt and others framing them as politically charged.Carlson has also maintained a visible role in conservative media, recently hosting a tribute episode for Charlie Kirk's program, where he spoke at length about the challenges faced by dissenters in the current media ecosystem and the personal bravery of Kirk and his network. In these appearances, Carlson reaffirmed his position as a central voice in conservative circles, positioning himself as a defender of contrarian perspectives in a climate he describes as stifling and often punitive toward ideological nonconformists. On the business front, Carlson's media company continues to attract attention. According to a recent investigative piece by The Preamble, conservative venture capital group 1789 Capital put $15 million into Carlson's new media venture, though Carlson and his business partner reportedly bought the investors out earlier this year. His media enterprise, backed initially by powerful right-wing donors and groups such as the Rockbridge Network, is notable for its stated ambition to reshape the landscape of conservative journalism and commentary using a tech-forward, influencer-heavy approach. This funding structure and network have spurred ongoing debate about transparency, donor influence, and the rapid rise of influencer-driven political media, with analysts and watchdogs scrutinizing how these operations shape political discourse.Carlson's evolving media strategy and growing influence as a platform for anti-establishment, populist conservative messaging have intensified broader conversations about the future of political media. Commentators from across the spectrum are engaging in lively debate over Carlson's role: supporters emphasize his willingness to challenge mainstream narratives and censorship, while detractors caution about his amplification of misinformation and his outsize impact on young, digitally native audiences. There have been no major new legal actions or investigations reported involving Carlson in the past several days, but his prominence in politically sensitive coverage and his hands-on participation in memorializing a polarizing figure like Charlie Kirk continue to keep him at the center of public and political discourse. His significant interactions with other conservative influencers, activists, and public intellectuals—especially through media collaborations and joint appearances—further underscore his networking power and capacity to set the agenda for large portions of the right-wing media environment.Thank you for listening to the Tucker Carlson News Tracker podcast, and don't forget to subscribe.
