Welcome back! It's Season 4 of Cracked! Today to kick it off I'm joined by Brooklyn based glass artist Sacha Carlos-Raps! She is a Filipina immigrant and not only makes beautiful glass work full of bright colors but also does printmaking and illustrations. Her art practice is "her rebellious demonstration against the good immigrant binary and the post-diasporic expectations of “first gens” Her work is memoriric totems that embraces the kaleidoscopic inner self, an ode to the abode and the absurd."Today we talk glasswork of course but we're also going to talk about markets, candles, get into the making of her zine, her Oaxacan residency and then we wind it back down with some fun Phillipino facts. Let's get into it...Join me as I crack it all wide open!To see more of Sacha's work, her instagram is @sacharaps and her website is sacharaps.com. For the Cracked Patreon members Sacha is gifting one of her super popular shrimp sun catchers. I'll be doing a raffle for that 12 days after the release of this episode. She's also offering a $20 discount code to the rest of the Cracked Patreon members and remember Sasha sells much more on her website other than glass pieces. I just ordered myself some an array of her gift cards and they're so cute! Buckle up! In this special episode, you can join the gents on their voyage to Cow-town for the East Town, Get Down music and food festival. Their adventure begins on a busy highway, and meanders through scenic cocktail establishments, too-small parkades, empty dive-bars, rockin' bowling alleys, and hoppin' Phillipino restaurants. The quest leads them to a Phillipino restaurant, where long-ago guest and favourite rapper, Homeboy Sandman performs. They deliver a t-shirt, and talk to a special guest before making the long, dark trek home.

Polls in the Philippines are predicting a landslide victory for Ferdinand "Bong Bong" Marcos Jr, the son of former President and dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Marcos regime was synonymous with corruption, human rights abuses and excess, so how did a once-exiled family return and find favour again with the masses?
I first noticed Merowyn on Instagram during the pandemic, a nurse in full scrubs sharing her experiences of what it was really like to work on the front line, but it was Merowyn's powerful voice advocating for mental health and anti domestic violence that really resonated with me. I was intrigued to learn more about her life... Merowyn grew up in a "clash of cultures" with a Phillipino father and Anglo mother in the suburbs of Melbourne. Physically Merowyn felt out of place as the only brown kid at school and like most kids, just wanted to fit in. Merowyn was also faced with witnessing emotional and physical domestic violence in her home and experienced intergenerational trauma being played out in her family home. In our chat we talk about Merowyn's teenage years where she lived with the impact of her mum's battle with cancer, falling into the "Melbourne shuffle" rave scene as a way to escape her world (and meeting her now husband whilst working in a rave store!!) and later finding her purpose helping people, starting out in pharmacy and later studying nursing. Later in life this affected Merowyn's perspective on relationship and a young adult found herself in a DV relationship, learning the lesson you can not change a person the hard way. We Are the Reason by the Phillipino Children - December 31, 2021
Les, Kurt, and Jason kick off the show having to delicately explain (or imply) what "ski poles" are, then they get excited for the first new Blac Chyna news in weeks (triggering questions about how Blac Chyna would dress for court and why the Kardashians want a free subscription to her Only Fans page). Then it's time to talk about Hallmark's Right in Front of Me, a new movie starring a (very sexy) Phillipino lead, yet another new milestone for the channel. There's also a potential romantic rival named that leads Kurt to genuine introspection on his walk. Les and Jason share potential Scientology recruitment encounters, we learn that eating garnishes is gauche, and Kurt keeps seeing ads for Atlantis gay cruises. But that's all just an onramp to the episode's most important conversation: how do other celeb's hotness stack up to Fred Gwynne (jump ahead to 1:09:21 for that 6 1/2 minute exercise in absurdity). Four Childless Women Walk Into a Bar... Actually, we're at my house, which can sometimes look like a bar. And all four of us are childless. Ranging from 34 to 51, we're all at different stages of our childless journeys. and we all come from very different backgrounds culturally. Obviously you know my Italian culture, Mariecris is 38, Phillipino, she's currently engaged and has been married once before, and there's a lot of cultural pressure in her community for women to have babies and grow big families. Mariecris is the first to admit, however, that she's done a lot of personal development work so she hasn't let that pressure influence her. But she does want kids, so she's currently starting IVF. Lauren's family is the complete opposite - she was always told she could do whatever felt right. Lauren is 34, she's married and, at the moment, she's still undecided, but knows that she's starting to get to the pointy end of her fertility so she wants to make a decision soon so she can either go for it, or go on with her life and not give it any more thought. Laura is 42, a British emigree, she's currently single, and, wow, she probably got more pressure from her mother to NOT have children. Laura is a world nomad, having lived in seven countries throughout her life and is currently in Australia. I really hope that by listening to four women, all at different stages of our lives, you get some clarity, and firmly feel that you are not alone. That your thoughts are more common than you think.PS. There were four of us sharing two microphones so the sound can sometimes get a bit iffy. What little boy doesn't wish to grow up as an albino, Phillipino girl trapped in a male body? And what Phillipino woman, wants to transition into her truth only to battle white privilege, from her own trans community? The answer is no one, and no one. Melanie Tillbrook is an accomplished Phillipino model, business owner, and fitness competitor. She modeled in our Next Door promotion during our initial rebranding and has put us in touch with some incredible models, like Metisha, who starred in one of our recent model profiles. She’s crazy talented and possesses adept business acumen, which she used to propel her business, Posh Production and Events. But that’s not what brought Melanie to the studio today. No, in this episode of Uncreative Radio, we’re here to talk about the fall of the entertainment industry amid coronavirus and how to stoke your bullshit-o-meter. There is a certain phrase that we’ve been hearing a lot amongst colleagues and it pretty much summarizes business at the turn of the decade (especially for those of us in the entertainment industry, with the exception on Netflix): “2020 started out strong and then March rolled around…” March was like getting kicked in the stomach after a massive bowl of fettucini alfredo (sorry, Italy). Business was a-boomin’. We were on track for record numbers. Our list of client work was out of the door. We had original productions in the pipeline. And then it all vanished. Our clients had to close their doors and consequentially our workload dried up like an orange left to rot on the side of the road in the summer heat. It’s been brutal. We’re not the only ones dealing with the coronavirus blowback (obviously) but we are one of the few who are talking about it. There’s no one better to have this conversation with than Melanie Tillbrook. Her career keeps her at the forefront of the entertainment industry, so when the world started to sour, she was one of the first people to see the signs. Melanie is no soothsayer (otherwise her business would have been impervious to the coronavirus blowback), but she is predicting an end to the mayhem. It may be sooner than you ever thought… Well, not if you’re a Trump 2020 supporter. Those people still think this whole thing is a hoax.

I'm Richard Stiller, a community manager at the SCA, and you're listening to the SCA Podcast. This week, the SCA Podcast is taking a quick break while we put the finishing touches on an upcoming lecture series recorded at last year's World of Coffee event in Berlin. In the meantime, I'd like you to meet Recap. It's our newest podcast! Every two weeks, Recap offers a brief overview of recent coffee developments in less than five minutes. If you like what you hear, subscribe by following the link in the show notes. Welcome to Recap, a new podcast from the Specialty Coffee Association offering a brief overview of recent coffee developments every two weeks. The monthly materials science journal, Matter, just published a study suggesting a new mathematical model for repeatable espresso extraction. Focused on the computational and physical attributes of espresso, the authors suggest that, if widely implemented, the protocol outlined in the study could significantly reduce coffee waste. Remarkably, the study was co-authored by Brisbane baristas Michael Cameron and Deschen Morisco, who tested the techniques of the study in a coffee shop. This study has already received significant attention from popular media outlets in the US and Australia. The study's co-author, the computational chemist Christopher Hendon, will present the work at the SCA's Specialty Coffee Expo in Portland this April. Meanwhile, across the Pacific in the Philippines, the Taal volcano has erupted, covering coffee trees in thick volcanic ash. The ash causes the leaves of coffee trees to wither, effectively starving them of energy which in turn reduces their ability to mature fruit. To assist, the Philippines' Department of Agriculture distributed water power sprayers to help remove the ash. It's not a perfect solution: the intense spray sometimes removes flowers and nearly-mature coffee cherries. Although Taal's eruption has caused considerable damage to many high-value crops in the area, coffee is reported to be the most affected. This will be a difficult harvest year for the affected Phillipino farmers, so the Department of Agriculture is also offering up to the equivalent of a million US dollars to affected farmers through a combination of cash aid and zero-interest loans. The effects of the eruption are likely to impact the country's recent growth in specialty coffee production. A long-time producer of coffee, this is not the first time the Philippines' coffee production has been decimated by environmental changes: a widespread influx of coffee rust at the turn of the twentieth century led local farmers to favor Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. A recent feature in the New York Times explores a culture-shift in Saudi Arabia through the lens of coffee shops. In December, the government announced it would no longer require businesses to segregate their customers by gender. Since the law passed, some specialty coffee shops already pursuing a more inclusive vision can now continue to do so without fearing a visit from the country's law enforcement. Reports suggest Saudi Arabia is the Middle-East's fastest-growing coffee market and, in December 2019, the country held its first-ever sanctioned national barista championship. Ahmed Bahaa of Camel Step Coffee Roasters will fly to Melbourne, Australia to represent Saudi Arabia for the first time at the World Barista Championships in May. If you want to dive deeper into anything you heard today, check out the links in the description of this episode. Recap will be back in two weeks' time. Thanks for listening and have a great week! You can also find Recap on iTunes, Spotify, or Transistor by searching for “Recap: Recent Developments in Coffee.” Have a story you think might be a good fit for Recap? Drop it into our contact form at scanews.coffee/contact or email us at editor@sca.coffee. Thanks for listening! You can find an Indian or Phillipino assistant online for a fraction of the price of a local secretary. But, how do you know if they will be reliable? Will the effort involved in training them be worth the financial saving? In this episode, Aaron Klein, CEO of Work Assisted, an outsourcing company, explains the ABCs of outsourcing from how to find the right people and communicate expectations clearly, to managing your passwords and online security. Whether you are a solopreneur working from your bed, or a manager of a company with multiple employees, this episode will have something of value for you. My Guest: Aaron Klein Aaron Klein, CEO of Work Assisted, has a passion for helping businesses save money and breakthrough to the next level, by allowing them to successfully outsource their Customer Service, Technical Support, Telemarketing, and Secretarial work. When a business outsources their work to his call center, Aaron, together with his industrial engineer, looks into the company to fully understand the goals and how it operates. Collaboration has been a major factor of why clients love working with him, because that’s the glue that integrates Work Assisted as a part of their business. Episode Highlights: [13:01]: So I said, as I was walking out, “Listen, I’m gonna leave, and one day, I’m going to open my own call center, and you’re going to become my client. Like, that’s what I told him. And it happens, and now he’s my client, and we’re doing very well with him. [18:13]: And then we got someone for the admin team, and the web dev put in like 35 hours, without ever like checking in, on a job that would have taken any of my internal team six hours or less. I don’t know what you did. Either you’re lying, or you’re completely incompetent. Because that was a six-hour job. Right? [23:47]: So if you’re going to give them a task, what you need to understand is that they won’t just – okay, just build me a website or just answer all the calls. It really needs to be laid out very carefully, every little thing needs to be discussed. If you want them to work with you in a certain way or you have a certain style, you need to explain that to them. And even more, you need to write that down, and then send them a PDF to their email about how you’d like them to work with you. But very, very clearly take that time. [33:43]: So I had a client and we said that he needs to find a secretary, a male secretary. So we named him “Sam Secretary”. And then he’s telling me about this new guy that he found and looks really good. And he’s calling him Sam. So I said, “Okay, but what’s his real name?” He was like “Estie, it’s Sam!” I was like “No way!!” [37:19]: I get my assistants to email things to my printer and order me food online to get delivered to my office. [40:33]: Actually, some of my clients are like, “Can I have one of your assistants?” I’m like, “No, no, I made this. I went and I found them, and then I spent tons of time and energy training them. Mine now.” [49:24]: But without telling anybody yet, because you never want to tell anybody you’re considering outsourcing, because you could get backlash sometimes. [53:12]: Focus is still it’s still a struggle for me. The problem is that I’m trying to right now to take on so many things… and in general, focus is always a hard thing, because the question is, where do you go next? What do you do now? Concert clarinetist and soprano saxophone player, Chris Elchico joins Steven Leavitt to talk about his experience being a classical musician, music teacher, and local coffee shop barista. Chris discusses the role of the classical musician, and what it's like playing with a quartet with members that live across the US. After getting his bachelors from UCLA and his masters from Indiana University in saxophone and clarinet, and studying under renowned LA Philharmonic player Burt Hara, Chris began the process of auditioning for orchestras across the US. He talks about the harrowing process of auditioning behind a screen where the judges base their critique on his sound alone. In 2012, Chris and his quartet won a trip around the world, performing at Notre Dame and ending up in Italy. “It was like living the dream, for 12 days.” He and Steve discuss what it's like to come back to “real life” and the daily grind, but it's apparent that Chris' kindness and positive attitude about life is one of the reasons he makes his successes look so unimposing. Chris is a soft spoken, compassionate person who uses his innate skills of empathy and listening to excel in his jobs as a barista, music teacher, and classical musician. I met Ranella in the summer of 2017 at a Fitness TV Launch Party. She had just come off of Season 1 of Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian and was learning how to make food and movement an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. We became friends immediately and it is such an honor to share her with you. We talk about being a Phillipino... woman... if faith in the music business as well as the challenges and successes that have shaped her. For example, her mom's house burned down at Christmas. You know, the usual. If you would like to connect with Ranella, hop over to Instagram where you can find her at www.instagram.com/ranellarocks

In the late 2000’s Box Hill Institute staff were converting their cassettes to CD when they stumbled across a strange cassette along with a Polaroid. All that was written in the inside cover was; ‘Saltman – Lessons in Suburban Life & Death’. Staff were intrigued to find out that ‘Saltman’ was never registered as a teacher and none of his students can be traced. The only reference on the recording is to an ex teacher, Chris Gafney who retired in 1999. Chris was contacted and only recalls sighting a tall blonde man loitering on the top floor of the Whitehorse road campus late at night talking to 3-4 Indonesian students, assuming he was either a cleaner or cheap security guard. All that’s left are these bizarre recordings, a man who is clearly living on the edge of the night and is heading towards insanity. His lessons are not only disturbing but enthralling and historical, giving us a glimpse into a lost world of the eastern suburbs.
