In this Book Talk Dr. Tremblay tells us what personal situations during his early academic career made him consider writing about the Pink Triangle in the first place and how looking at the topic in global and transregional perspective helped shape his research and understanding of history. In the following discussion he and the series editors Dr. Sabrina Mittermeier and Dr. Bodie Ashton discuss looking at history through a “queer lens”, and how being mindful of language and heritage is a chance and problem for historical researchers on a global scale. The book "A Badge of Injury. The Pink Triangle as Global Symbol of Memory" analyses gay and lesbian transregional cultural communication networks from the 1970s to the 2000s, focusing on the importance of National Socialism, visual culture, and memory in the queer Atlantic. Provincializing Euro-American queer history, it illustrates how a history of concepts which encompasses the visual offers a greater depth of analysis of the transfer of ideas across regions than texts alone would offer. It also underlines how gay and lesbian history needs to be reframed under a queer lens and understood in a global perspective. A Badge of Injury pinpoints the roles of cultural memory and power in the creation of gay and lesbian transregional narrativ. ► Link to the book ► Contact us

The Bay Lights by artist Leo Villareal first went live on March 5, 2013. Exactly one decade later, the beloved artwork went dark. Ben Davis is the driving force behind The Bay Lights and the effort to bring the artwork back with twice the number of LEDs in a radically accessible new configuration. With the project 75 percent funded—and $2.5 million more needed to proceed—Davis will reveal what's next for the historic effort: organizational vulnerability. Davis is the founder and leader of Illuminate, the art nonprofit behind many of San Francisco's large-scale and iconic public artworks, including lighting The Pink Triangle on Twin Peaks, activation of the Golden Mile on JFK Promenade, the Summer of Love lighting on the Conservatory of Flowers, Grace Light in Grace Cathedral, the revival of the Golden Gate Bandshell, and the series of giant laser art installations across San Francisco this summer. Davis will also talk about his vision for San Francisco as the City of Awe. The program talk will be followed by a reception and live music by "KAVIN" on the rooftop. Part I. Life and Death of Homosexuals under the Nazi Regime Guest: David Fernbach is a freelance writer, editor and translator. His publications and translations include the three-volume edition of Karl Marx's Political Writings, The Spiral Path: a gay contribution to human survival, and The Men With the Pink Triangle: The True, Life-and-Death Story of Homosexuals in the Nazi Death Camps. The Men With the Pink Triangle appeared first in 1980 by Gay Men's Press in which David Fernbach also participated in the publication and translation of the book. The book is a revolutionary work, and still one of the very few memoirs by a gay victim of Nazism. Written by Heinz Heger, a pseudonym used by Josef Kohout (1917-1994). Part II. Indigenous Justice in Early America Guest: Nicole Eustace is professor of history at New York University. She is author of Pulitzer-Prize winning Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America (2021). The post Life and Death of Homosexuals under the Nazi Regime appeared first on KPFA.
At least 385 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced so far in 2023, targeting everything from books to gender-affirming care and even marriage equality. It all sounds a bit familiar, and that's what we're talking about this week. Today we talk to Dr Jake Newsome, author of Pink Triangle Legacies: Coming Out in the Shadow of the Holocaust about anti-LGBTQ legislation in Germany from the 19th century until the 1970s, Nazi policies and how the public enabled them, and how the pink triangle went from a symbol of imprisonment to one of gay liberation.
Listen to the rest of the episode, another 25 minutes, by joining the ITBR Cafe for only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom.com On January 27th, the world recognized International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and it seemed poignant and fitting to have Dr. Jake Newsome, a scholar of American and German LGBTQ+ History, join Andrew in the ITBR to discuss his new book "Pink Triangle Legacies." Jake begins by explaining why so many don't know the Nazi persecution of LGBTQ+ people and the origin story of the pink triangle. He explains why it's so important to learn about the connection between Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities during the Holocaust. Why does Jake's historical fascination with the pink triangle begin in a Buffalo gay bar? He explains that the Weimar Republic was such a sexually free historical moment in Germany, and why Magnus Hirschfeld, an outspoken sexologist, was such a prolific gay rights activist and how his work still resonates in 2023. Andrew asks Jake whether the legacy of the pink triangle resonates with America's current divisive political atmosphere, and he has a lot to say about this topic! Jake and Andrew are just getting started about the political issues happening in America, but their thoughts are so unfiltered that they recorded a bonus episode. In the early 1980s, people in Aotearoa started hearing rumours of a new, mystery illness that seemed to mostly be killing gay men overseas. Early rhetoric around the illness, still without an official name or known means of acquisition, was overtly homophobic and harmful. Rainbow media, such as Pink Triangle, the newspaper of the National Gay Rights Coalition of New Zealand, had some early articles in their health sections. But, on the whole, the government, mainstream media, the wider public, and even the medical community largely knew nothing or thought it was just ‘something going on overseas'. Then, Kiwis began coming home sick… and several brave people stood up and demanded that people take notice before it was too late. This show is produced in collaboration with Wavelength Creative. On a rainy night in June, 2010, a 911 call would set off one of the biggest murder scandals to shock Louisville, Kentucky. Two men, living in a crumbling Victorian mansion in Old Louisville, both accused each other of killing a man they had buried in the old wine cellar. The ensuing trials transfixed locals with talk of kinky sex, drugs, counterfeit money, guns and a sledge hammer. Editor Sarah Brown hops from behind the mic to in front, as she and James debrief the harrowing Britney Spears testimony. In summer fashion it's time to rewind to some of our best korners relevant for post Pride month, and as we head into summer. First up, James leads us through an exploration of the history of the Pink Triangle, which takes us to Nazi Germany, and the treatment of homosexuals. Could this happen again? Is it? We also look at the power and influence of queer culture as evidenced in the documentary Paris is Burning. Then it's suns out buns out for some summer time fun as Nnekay takes us to a journey to Amusement Park Past! She talks about three major amusement parks that were owned and for black people and all the glamour that occurred at these amazing spots. Today's passage, a quote from “A Radical Awakening,” a new book by Dr. Shefali Tsabary. “If there is one word most women hate, it's being called a ‘bitch.' “Calling us bitches, sluts, or whores is one of the ways culture controls its powerful women. When we understand this, we stop taking it personally… Because, when we are called Bitch, it's not about us at all. It's all to do with how unsubmissive and powerful we actually are.”Let's deconstruct what is at the root of name calling. Name calling, in all forms, is an illusion that a person is “lesser than” or “crazy” inflicted by a delusionary name-caller who believes their victim is a weakling who can be intimidated and controlled. When really, it's the power the victim embodies which threatens name caller therefore they try to inflict a wound through verbal abuse, which is precisely what calling a woman a bitch truly is, until we own the word as women and take it back.Switching gears, former First Lady, Eleonor Roosevelt once famously said, "No on can make you feel inferior without your consent" but understanding and applying this idea, in the real world can be tricky. As women, we are so deeply conditioned to seek validation, and approval from others because culture, society and our well-meaning parents have impressed upon us the need to be agreeable, so if someone disagrees with us or is highly unpleased with us we may experience some pretty heavy discomfort until we learn to embrace the slurs much like the U.S. feminist magazine, titled, "Bitch" has done saying, if “Bitch is a word used to describe an outspoken woman, we'll take the compliment.”Much like the African American community in taking back the N-word. Or, how the gay community has taken back the Nazi's Pink Triangle, a symbol that once brought about shame and humiliation is now a symbol of pride. But, in order to full own bitch, or any other slur, we have to disrupt the cultural pattern that many of women suffer from, being raised as good girls, we have the disease to please.' It's an illness spread all over the world, because ‘good girls' aren't called bitches, and 'good girls' don't have their mental faculties brought into question with bits like, ‘That's a crazy hoe.'When we see women like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is often called a bitch, even recently bitch by a congressman, we describe the the congresswoman as 'strong'. Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez is a 'strong woman' because she speaks her mind. Because the fact of the matter is, women who speak their mind are strong. It's difficult to speak your mind and be verbally abused by men for doing so, which is why we have to take back the word bitch as a label of empowerment. Obviously, we never call men 'strong' for speaking their mind. No, their just called, 'men'. But now what do we call a weak man? A pussy. Because weakness is associated with the vagina. But truly, we should help men out with that one and take back the word, 'pussy' too, so that it's not aligned with weakness.Whenever there is a ‘strong man' be it mind, body or soul, let's describe him with admiration by calling him a real 'pussy.'Think of a man in your life you respect and you love and try this compliment out. Maybe a spouse, a reverend, the President of the United States. That Joe Biden, now he's a real pussy.Connect with me: Instagram.com/megan_nycmom

As a profound piece of LGBT history and San Francisco's PRIDE celebration, The Pink Triangle stands as an ode to the dark history of LGBT persecution, and the emergence of PRIDE as a social movement-turned-colorful symbol of hope and inclusion on the horizon of San Francisco. Patrick Carney, renegade artist and creator of the iconic “Pink Triangle” on San Francisco's Twin Peaks, teams up with Ben Davis, founder of local non-profit “Illuminate”, to discuss and action the unthinkable project of digitizing the Pink Triangle in 2020.

Because homosexuality remained criminalised after the Nazis were defeated, many of the stories of LGBT persecution and LGBT resistance went undocumented, it's victims and heroes were at risk of prosecution if outed as gay.Gad Beck's story of resistance is one exception to that secrecy. Gad, was both Jewish and gay, and therefore was thoroughly stigmatised by Nazi law, but nonetheless found ways to resist.Josh Bradlow, Head of Policy at Stonewall, told us how Gad found his identity in resistance to the Nazis and how he would continue that tradition for the rest of his life.
Jazz Goldman and I just went to Pride. Jazz is a friend of mine, an ocassional sex partner of mine, a professional cuddler for cuddlist, all about the performing arts, and all about community building. Jazz and I have in common being some flavor of gender non-confirming and also being mixed race humans. In Jazz’ case, they are a Black Jew, and in my case I’m a British Indian. Very, very different backgrounds, and yet the experience of being a quote “third culture” end quote child has its similarities. Jazz is most importantly a sexuality intellectual. We sometimes get lost on tangents as we both find each other so interesting even when we’re off topic. Back on topic: did I say we two mixed race, queers of colour were just at Pride? Well it turns out some queers, especially some queers of colour, have strong feelings about Pride sometimes and we want to present some thoughts that might currently be less common in the mainstream while remaining as polite and kind to current organizers as possible as they still fill an important role or niche - but we’ll say more about that in the podcast. Jazz mentions the Pink Triangle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_triangle). This week we cover the Pink Triangle and the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. Once a home of vibrant queer progressiveness, Germany dissolved into a dark place of bigotry, anti-semitism and extreme homophobia. We trace Hitler's dissent of hate from his overthrow of power in 1933 to the end of the war. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/yourqueerstory/message

During San Francisco Pride week, a giant pink triangle is installed on Twin Peaks. In the gallery chat "Andrew Ramer on Pride Week’s Pink Triangle in Conjunction with Yom HaShoah," Andrew Ramer talks about how the pink triangle went from being a symbol of persecution to a symbol of gay pride. Presented in partnership with Congregation Sha’ar Zahav, and in conjunction with Cary Leibowitz: Museum Show and the commemoration of Yom HaShoah. Recorded on April 21, 2017. Andrew Ramer is a writer whose work is grounded in narratives from parallel realities. He’s the author of Torah Told Different: Stories for a Pan/Poly/Post-Denominational Era, Queering the Text: Biblical, Medieval, and Modern Jewish Stories, and Two Flutes Playing, which has been called a gay underground classic. The world’s first ordained interfaith maggid (sacred storyteller), he is a longtime member of Congregation Sha’ar Zahav in San Francisco, in whose marvelously innovative siddur many of his prayers and blessings appear.
James has quite the surprise to jump start the show, what celebrity is he now one degree of separation away from? Find out! But first: several tangents! In this fairy tale themed episode JamKay break down the TRUTH behind some of these fairytales, what was really going on with this misunderstood, diabetic witch who lived in the woods before the entitled Hansel & Gretel showed up at her door? And don't even get us started on that Goldilocks... too late! Nnekay is going to a fancy event at the MOMA in San Francisco, will she meet Solange? Perhaps with some Oprah like coaching from James and his visualization techniques, and some throwing of elbows from Nnekay- she just might have a chance! As teased from last week James delivers as we explore the history of the Pink Triangle, which takes us to Nazi Germany, and the treatment of homosexuals. Could this happen again? Is it? We also look at the power and influence of queer culture as evidenced in the documentary Paris is Burning. Nnekay has another listicle for you and this time it is even more specific, like a very fine tuned Netflix sub-sub-sub category: Books for Kids featuring Black Protagonists not about Slavery, Sports, or Civil Rights. YES! But this leads into a larger conversation of Black stories in media, from Empire, to Scandal. We have some fan mail to read, thoughts on the Live Action Lion King, and we will bring up Rachel Dolezal for the last time. http://www.pink-triangle.org/ https://scottwoodsmakeslists.wordpress.com/2016/01/30/28-black-picture-books-that-arent-about-boycotts-buses-or-basketball/

When Hitler came to power in Germany, gays and lesbians were continually persecuted. Soon, homosexual men also faced prison time. Thousands were eventually arrested, and many wound up in concentration camps, where they were labeled with pink triangles.
