In this Book Talk Dr. Tremblay tells us what personal situations during his early academic career made him consider writing about the Pink Triangle in the first place and how looking at the topic in global and transregional perspective helped shape his research and understanding of history. In the following discussion he and the series editors Dr. Sabrina Mittermeier and Dr. Bodie Ashton discuss looking at history through a “queer lens”, and how being mindful of language and heritage is a chance and problem for historical researchers on a global scale. The book "A Badge of Injury. The Pink Triangle as Global Symbol of Memory" analyses gay and lesbian transregional cultural communication networks from the 1970s to the 2000s, focusing on the importance of National Socialism, visual culture, and memory in the queer Atlantic. Provincializing Euro-American queer history, it illustrates how a history of concepts which encompasses the visual offers a greater depth of analysis of the transfer of ideas across regions than texts alone would offer. It also underlines how gay and lesbian history needs to be reframed under a queer lens and understood in a global perspective. Dr. Na Li is associated researcher and chair of Public History at the University of Vienna. She is a public historian and urban planning scholar. Her research focuses on public history and urban preservation. During her decade-long work in China, Na Li has pioneered the field of public history in China. In this book talk, she and De Gruyter's history acquisitions editor Rabea Rittgerodt talk about her recent publication Seeing History: Public History in China which came out in late 2023 in the DG series Public History in International Perspectives. Today, more than twenty oligarchs serve as heads of state or government in countries such as Russia, South Africa, Lebanon and El Salvador. Many have a net worth in excess of $1 billion, and they all – whether directly or indirectly – impact our daily lives.   Who are the oligarchs and how have they come to dominate our world? What difference does gender make? Is there something “good” to be found in them, or are they just “bad”? And what is it like to interview an oligarch and glimpse their human side? In this book talk, the authors of The Oligarchs' Grip: Fusing Wealth and Power talk to Stefan Giesen, Editorial Director Business & Economics at De Gruyter. Entrepreneurship expert David Lingelbach and oligarch researcher Valentina Rodríguez Guerra draw upon more than 25 years of research (including conversations with Vladimir Putin and other oligarchs), 16 case studies, and dozens of historical examples in The Oligarchs' Grip. They develop the first-ever model that reveals the strategies employed by oligarchs to fuse wealth and power and transition between the two.  David Lingelbach is Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Merrick School of Business, University of Baltimore. He was educated at MIT, London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Exeter, where he earned his Ph.D. Prior to becoming an academic, David served in senior roles in finance and international development, including as CEO of Bank of America's businesses in the former Soviet Union. He was a Fulbright Scholar (Myanmar/Burma, 2018-19) and Fulbright Specialist (Colombia, 2021) and has been nominated twice for an Andrew Carnegie Fellowship.  Valentina Rodríguez Guerra is an author, oligarch researcher, and graduate student in business administration, Facultad de Ciencias Económicas, Universidad Nacional de Colombia. How do we produce knowledge? How do we present it? How can we better understand our societies, past and present? And, ultimately, what is it that makes us us? The study of Modern Languages tackles nothing short of these fundamental questions, exploring the very foundations of what it means to be human. Moreover, the field is inherently dynamic. Artificial Intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, have rapidly changed our perspective on language as something uniquely human. Social media have created new ways of reading and consuming information. Concurrently, emerging forms of scholarship are reshaping the way we approach Modern Languages. We wanted to learn more about the discipline in an ever-changing and increasingly digital world, so we sat down with Professors Andy Byford and Claudia Nitschke from Durham University, UK. Andy Byford holds the position of Professor of Russian Studies, while Claudia Nitschke is a Professor of German at Durham's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Both have authored numerous publications and are serving as editors of the upcoming “Handbook of Modern Languages”, to be published by De Gruyter in 2024. Early on in the Arab Spring, a blog that had already existed for several years went viral: A Gay Girl in Damascus by Amina Arraf, a Syrian-American Muslim woman, who wrote about the uprisings in Syria and her life as a lesbian in Damascus. In June 2011, the world was shocked to learn that Amina had allegedly been abducted by the secret police. But the real surprise was yet to come. Not long after, journalists and activists realized that Amina Arraf was a hoax, invented and impersonated by Thomas “Tom” MacMaster, a forty-year-old straight white American man who studied medieval history in Scotland. What made McMaster so successful in deceiving the blog's readers? Specifically, why were educated and politically engaged westerners so susceptible to believing a falsified account of the Syrian revolution? And how did the western need for self-validation as anti-racist, LGBTQ-friendly and anti-imperialist come into play? Andrew Orr, Professor of Military History and Security Studies at Kansas State University, has delved into these questions in his newly published book, “The Gay Girl in Damascus Hoax.” To shed some light on what we can learn from this incredible story, and how queer theory helps understand history, we invited him for this book talk. One of the first professional women authors of the Middle Ages, Italian-French writer, strategist and historian Christine de Pizan (1364–c.1429) possessed extensive knowledge of military tactics and advocated for women's equality centuries before the feminist movement. Last year, De Gruyter published her highly influential military and warfare treatise, “Le livre de faiz d'armes et de chevallerie” (Book of Deeds of Arms and Chivalry, 1410) together with its contemporary German translation. On the occasion of Women's History Month, we take a look back on the life and work of this extraordinary figure with Pizan experts Earl Jeffrey Richards and Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski. Prof. Dr. phil. (em.) Earl Jeffrey Richards is Professor of Romance Literatures at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. In 1982, he translated The Book of the City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan and has been actively writing about her and her works ever since. Prof. Dr. phil. (em.) Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski is Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Pittsburgh and was President of the Medieval Academy of America in 2020/2021. Her research focuses on French medieval literature and culture, in particular Christine de Pizan. Alexandra Koronkai-Kiss is Editorial Communications Manager at De Gruyter. Digital humanities are a hot topic nowadays, but what about digital linguistics? How can digital language data be used in other areas of research? To tackle these complex questions, we invited Prof. Andreas Witt and Dr. Darja Fišer to talk to us about De Gruyter's new series “Digital Linguistics” and its first volume “CLARIN. The Infrastructure for Language Resources,” which the two co-edited. Andreas Witt is Professor of Computational Humanities and Text Technologies at the University of Mannheim and heads the department of Digital Linguistics at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim. Furthermore, he is the series editor of “Digital Linguistics”. Films not only entertain – they also probe social injustices and tell marginalized stories. Against a backdrop of increasing economic inequality, more and more people today are experiencing precarious living situations, poverty, and social exclusion. The book “Precarity in European Film: Depictions and Discourses” is a major new contribution to research into the representation of class in contemporary visual culture. In this book talk, Dr. Pablo Dominguez Andersen, communications director at De Gruyter, meets the volume's three editors — Elisa Cuter, Guido Kirsten, and Hanna Prenzel — to discuss questions of precarity in European cinema. What does precarity mean exactly? Is class still a relevant issue today? And can we identify common themes in these films, selected from across Europe? The volume brings together renowned scholars and early career-researchers in mapping the ways in which European cinema — whether mainstream or arthouse, fictional or documentary, traditional or experimental — engages with phenomena of precarity, poverty, and social exclusion. It looks at how the filmic traditions of different countries reflect the socioeconomic conditions of precarity, and it illuminates similarities in the iconography of precarious lives across cultures. The three editors are members of the Emmy Noether Research Group on Cinematic Discourses of Deprivation at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Potsdam. Over the last few years, the misuse of contested terms such as “critical race theory” and “white privilege” have exacerbated social rifts – especially since these terms are often misunderstood or not clearly defined in the first place. What's to be done? Can we counteract polarization by creating a better understanding of these concepts? Perhaps the answers lurk behind the doors of a historic townhouse at 1014 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Founded in 2017 upon the initiative of the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut, the non-profit organization 1014 – space for ideas aims to facilitate transatlantic relationships through talks, performances, and exhibitions. Their latest venture is the conversation series “Humanities for Humans,” presented in collaboration with the Walter de Gruyter Foundation. In eight virtual and in-person events over two years, renowned scholars from a variety of disciplines and from both sides of the Atlantic will take a deeper look at the polarizing issues of our era. According to Dr. Irene Kacandes, Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College and curator of the series, the lectures aim to bring out the “human” in the humanities and to contribute to a level-headed debate among the general public. In the run-up to the first event on September 27, De Gruyter's director of communications Dr. Pablo Dominguez Andersen spoke to Irene about the origins of the series, the vital role of the humanities in times of crisis, and her plans for the future. Commercially successful, fan-beloved, and a frequent source of media attention, Rockstar's franchises are positioned as not only game-changing, ground-breaking interventions in the games industry, but also as critical, cultural histories on America and its excesses. What does it mean to be a digital scholar? The answers to this seemingly simple question are probably as diverse as the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities itself. To learn more about the ins and outs of the emerging research area, we invited Prof. Valérie Schafer from the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) for an interview. Valérie Schafer has been a Professor in Contemporary European History at the C2DH since 2018, where she does research on the history of the Internet and the Web, the history of European digital cultures and infrastructures, and born-digital heritage. Previously, she worked at The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). She is furthermore one of the co-editors of the book series “Studies in Digital History and Hermeneutics”. What does it mean to be human? How can other forms of being, such as non-human animals or algorithms, help us understand what makes humanity unique? Such questions are central to posthumanist research, which has been proliferating in recent years across the humanities and social sciences. Yet they are anything but new: as Erika Quinn and Holly Yanacek show in their recent book “Animals, Machines, and AI“, philosophy, literature, and the visual arts have been fascinated by non-human forms of life and interrogated received understandings of the human for centuries. Myrto Aspioti sat down for a virtual chat with the volume editors on the challenges of writing a book about our relationship to machines and animals just as Covid-19 hit, forcing us all behind screens and in the sole company of our beloved pets. Her previous research has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the German Historical Institute, and the DAAD, and she has recently published articles in German Life and Letters, Monatshefte, and Novel: A Forum on Fiction. Her works on gender, politics, Holocaust, and war have been translated into 23 languages. Aber was genau geschah vor und nach dem 3. Oktober 1990? Was ist die Wirkungsgeschichte, die “Public History” des 3. Oktober als Nationalfeiertag? Kann und muss es überhaupt einen deutschen Nationalfeiertag geben? Und: Wie verhält sich die persönliche Erinnerung an die deutsche Wiedervereinigung zum offiziellen Gedenken 30 Jahre später? In der Anfangszeit waren die Frauen am Bauhaus in der Überzahl. Aber: Über die 14 Jahre der Existenz des Bauhaus hinweg waren nur ein Drittel der Studierenden am Bauhaus Frauen. Nur 2 Frauen brachten es schließlich zur Bauhaus-Meisterin. Das Dilemma der Bauhaus-Frauen: sie durften mitmachen, aber längst nicht überall. Die traditionelle Geschlechterverteilung blieb trotz aller Aufbruchsstimmung wirksam. Dennoch machten die Bauhaus-Frauen von sich reden. Seit über fünfzig Jahren arbeitet ein Redaktions-Team bereits an der Erstellung des Allgemeinen Künstlerlexikons, eines Nachschlagewerks, das - laut Untertitel - Künstlerinnen und Künstler aller Zeiten und aller Nationen umfasst und heute im Verlag Walter de Gruyter erscheint. Eine Art Sisyphos-Arbeit, die längst nicht beendet sein wird, wenn – voraussichtlich 2021 – der letzte Buchdeckel hinter Z zuklappt. Denn seit 2009 ist eine Online-Ausgabe am Start, die jetzt schon kontinuierlich erweitert und aktualisiert wird. Dass dieses Mammut-Projekt nicht überholt ist – wie man angesichts weltweit abrufbarer Internetdaten denken könnte – und dass es neben aller Fachliteratur nach wie vor ein zuverlässiges Forschungsinstrument ist, wird an Jahrestagen wie dem diesjährigen Bauhausjubiläum sichtbar. Alle mit dem Bauhaus in Verbindung stehenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler sind anlässlich des Jubiläums auf der Webseite von de Gruyter frei zugänglich. Mithilfe einer online gestellten Liste der Künstlerinnen und Künstler kann jede und jeder nach eigenem Gusto in das Bauhausuniversum eintauchen. Seit über fünfzig Jahren arbeitet ein Redaktions-Team bereits an der Erstellung des Allgemeinen Künstlerlexikons, eines Nachschlagewerks, das - laut Untertitel - Künstlerinnen und Künstler aller Zeiten und aller Nationen umfasst und heute im Verlag Walter de Gruyter erscheint. Eine Art Sisyphos-Arbeit, die längst nicht beendet sein wird, wenn – voraussichtlich 2021 – der letzte Buchdeckel hinter Z zuklappt. Denn seit 2009 ist eine Online-Ausgabe am Start, die jetzt schon kontinuierlich erweitert und aktualisiert wird. Dass dieses Mammut-Projekt nicht überholt ist – wie man angesichts weltweit abrufbarer Internetdaten denken könnte – und dass es neben aller Fachliteratur nach wie vor ein zuverlässiges Forschungsinstrument ist, wird an Jahrestagen wie dem diesjährigen Bauhausjubiläum sichtbar. Alle mit dem Bauhaus in Verbindung stehenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler sind anlässlich des Jubiläums auf der Webseite von de Gruyter frei zugänglich. Mithilfe einer online gestellten Liste der Künstlerinnen und Künstler kann jede und jeder nach eigenem Gusto in das Bauhausuniversum eintauchen.
