White settlers wiped out Colorado's wolf population. In 2010, voters required them to be reintroduced. There are now 29 wolves here. Ranchers -- worried about their livestock and livelihoods -- must adapt. CPR Climate and Environment Reporter Sam Brasch hosts a discussion at Loveland's Rialto Theater about the past, present, and future of wolf restoration.

We're diving in--going deep--into conversation with Steven Curtis Chapman. And Christmas is all in Chicago for him on Saturday December 9, when he'll be playing a concert at the Rialto Theater in Joliet as part of his Acoustic Christmas Tour. In our interview, Steven gets very tender about his vision for the tour; while Christmas is a time that we remember those who aren't at the table, a concert can provide a moment to sit and soak in the message of the season. He reveals his favorite Christmas songs, both to sing in concert and to drop onto the record player while decorating the Chapman tree (which, unlike the Sampson tree, is not up yet). Brian and Aubrey get nostalgic with him and share what his music meant for their little Cinderellas and for their faith journeys, and Steven teases a future as... a wedding singer? Apparently he can do everything, so saddle up your horses for a great conversation. The hushed thrum of the womb. The warble of the last living species of a now-extinct bird. The fury and thrust of a jet engine in flight. These are some of the sounds that populate filmmaker Sam Green's immersive documentary “32 Sounds.” The movie is not just a collection of sounds, but rather a meditation on the strange power that sound has on us, whether it is voices, music, the natural world or sounds that we are trying to tune out. Watching the movie, even on a tiny screen, can be a full-body experience in which you're encouraged by Green, who narrates the film, to feel the sound. We'll talk to Green and his Oscar-winning sound designer, Mark Mangini, about how sound can literally move us. 32 Sounds will be screened at the Exploratorium on July 27, at the Smith Rafael Film Center July 28-30, the San Francisco Roxie Theater, July 29 and Berkeley's Rialto Theater, July 30. In August of 2022, Raleigh’s iconic theater, its oldest theater, shut its doors. Almost everyone who is a Raleigh native has been to the Rialto on Glenwood Avenue in the Five Points neighborhood to catch a movie, a concert or a live performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was known for its independent films and its old-world feel, a feeling like you had stepped back in time to an era when everyone saw movies in the theater and not on their devices. The theater now has a new owner who promises to bring it back to life. In this episode, photojournalist Rick Armstrong tells us what the future holds for the Rialto. https://www.wral.com/story/rialto-raleigh-s-oldest-movie-theater-reopening-this-summer-with-new-owners/20850335/

There are so many stories from American history that, while not centered solely in Atlanta, have connections to this city. This week, I sharing the story of the U.S. Marine Corps first Black Marines, from the lens of those that enlisted in Atlanta. A dozen Black Marines served in the Revolutionary War, but from 1798 until 1942, enrollment in the corps was denied to Black men. In May of 1942, the Secretary of the Navy announced plans for the recruitment of 900 Black Marines to begin in June of that year. In Atlanta, any Black man, between the ages of 17 and 29 who wanted to enlist went to the second floor of the Rialto Theater. Of the first 6 Georgians to enlist, 5 lived in Atlanta. A landmark of the northern Colorado art scene is turning 102 years old this year. The historic Rialto Theater in Loveland originally planned to celebrate its true centennial in 2020, when it would have turned 100. Because of the pandemic, though, those festivities had to be postponed – until now. Visitors from all over Colorado flocked to the Rialto this week to share memories and to marvel at the lovingly restored building. Guests enjoyed silent film screenings and special behind-the-scenes tours that took them through winding, cramped passageways below the stage and into the bright, newly designed community spaces. KUNC's Erin O'Toole and Yoselin Meza Miranda tagged along on one of those tours, joining about a dozen guests who gathered in front of the main stage with small bags of fresh popcorn. Rialto theater manager Steve Lemmon and events coordinator Heather Rubald spoke about the work that's been done to update and expand the space. Most of the theater's aesthetic has been preserved. The seats are new, but have a vintage look, and the stylized flower murals on the walls have either been restored or painted to look almost exactly like the original.Rubald remembers when she used to go to the Rialto to watch movies. “It was a rather run-down movie theater, so we had mutated the name from Rialto to 'Rathole,'" she said with a laugh.Built in 1920, the Rialto was designed as a silent movie theater. In the late 1960's they tried to attract more visitors by installing a large movie screen and a snack bar. The building went through many changes over the years, and for a time it housed a shopping mall and office space. It was so rundown that it came perilously close to being torn down. In 1988 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. And after the Downtown Development Authority purchased the building, the process of restoring the Rialto to its original glory began. Some of that work included expanding dressing rooms and adding a modern Green Room for performers.Donna Evans was one of those touring the theater. Years ago, she performed a few times at the Rialto as part of a choral group. There were only two tiny dressing rooms below the stage, and she remembers a Tae Kwon Do studio across the alley that would allow performers to change costumes there.“We had to go out through those back doors, run across all the parking and stuff, get in there [with] no privacy, change your costumes, run back across the thing, get back up on the stage again," Evans recalled. "It's much better now. It's beautiful.”Theater manager Steve Lemmon says much of the renovation was done by a group of volunteers who would come in Saturday mornings to work. “Slowly but surely they brought it back to life, and that's the only reason this theater's still open today,” he said.Of course any building that is over 100 years old has secrets. “We have a couple of ghosts that live here in the theater,” said Rialto technical coordinator Phil Baugh. One of those spirits haunting the theater is Clarence, a projectionist who worked from the 1940s and 50s. Baugh says Clarence messes with sound and light every now and then. There's also the infamous “woman in white," a performer from the vaudeville era who has allegedly been seen floating on the stage. She even has her favorite seat – J-16. “She was in the middle of a performance and passed away in the dressing rooms,” said Baugh. “If you feel a little bit of a cold breeze, it just might be the woman in white.”For those interested in paranormal activities, the Rialto offers ghost tours in October, just in time for Halloween. But for this week, the focus is entirely on celebrating the here and now of this longtime cornerstone of the Loveland arts community. “A lot of people who grew up here remember it in its heyday; they remember the tough times it went through; they remember the redemption story of all the community members who brought it back to life," said theater manager Steve Lemmon. "People feel like it's their theater, and that's really what a community theater should be.” The Rialto's centennial celebration wraps up Saturday, May 21. Due to inclement weather, many of the events will be held inside the theater. Find more information and a full event schedule here.Colorado Edition is hosted and produced by Erin O'Toole (@ErinOtoole1). Entertainment has not taken place at the Rialto Square Theater since the beginning of March, but now the iconic theater will earn money in a new way. Beginning Monday and possibly lasting the next four months, The Rialto will serve as Will County Traffic Court for cases from Joliet, Channahon, Crest Hill, Elwood, Lockport, Manhattan, Rockdale and Shorewood.
100 years ago The Rialto Theater opened across the street from the recently built Hotel Congress. It was our downtown entertainment district- hotel, restaurant, bar and theater. The Rialto is a downtown iconic fixture. As you roll in from the East, you cannot miss its marquee. Last night The Rialto Theater Foundation celebrated the 100th anniversary as part of their annual fund raising gala. As expected, it was a popular place to be on leap day. In honor of this milestone we pulled out of our archives a 2018 feature we did on the theater with Julie Ragland, the Development Director of the Rialto Theater Foundation The theater survived an arson attempt, has staged Vaudeville, showed adult films, was used to store furniture and is haunted. But when you talk to Julie Ragland she simply says it has a Funky Vibe. Formed as part of Rio Nuevo's efforts to preserve the history of downtown Tucson, the Rialto Theater Foundation has restored the theater to being one of the top live performance spots in the world. The foundation has also added R Bar and 191 Toole to its inventory. Julie gave us the history of the Rialto Foundation and discussed its mission with us.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Welcome, friends, to the Narada Radio Company's second year of performing -- LIVE, in front of an audience -- our adaptation of the 1947 broadcast of "The Lux Radio Theatre: 'It's a Wonderful Life'"! Once again, we performed at the historic Rialto Theater in Aransas Pass, Texas, over two weekends in December 2019, to small, yet appreciative audiences. (BUT -- this is not the same show as last year! It's an extended version: some lines from a 1947 "Camel Screen Players" radio broadcast, plus additional dialogue, were added to this production, for our audience's benefit.) Please do your best to overlook the technical and sound anomalies present in this recording. They couldn't be helped, and couldn't be removed fully in post-production. I want to thank all of you listeners, and my terrific Narada members, for helping us have a really wonderful year! We created seven new audio dramas in 2019 for "The Cellar", four for Sonic Summerstock, and two for World Audio Drama Day, and we brought live audio drama to three venues in South Texas. Not only all of this, but I put out nine episodes of our new podcast, "Old-Time Radio Essentials". What will 2020 bring? Tune in and find out! Pig Snout is a band consisting of my long time Tacoma buddy Justin Tamminga and his children, Dahlia and Lucien. At the time of this recording, Dahlia was 10 years old and Lucien was 13. Obviously it's pretty rare kids this young start a band with their dad, but what I most love about talking them about their worst show is the total lack of concern around criticizing hallowed musical institutions (like the Rialto Theater). And they don't care about sounding cool or impressive. They just like what they like and don't hesitate to let it be known. Their honesty and humor was a treat, and I'm grateful to their musical papa for exposing them to music at such an early age.

“These stories can only be told by us.” Those words are written by Bharat Shah, an American hotelier and an immigrant from India, in his autobiography “America My Destiny.” Bharat's son, Mit, is founder and CEO of Noble Investment Group, which has $3 billion of private equity invested in hotels throughout the country. Together, father and son decided to share Bharat Shah's story with the world. They did that in 2014, in front of a packed auditorium in the Rialto Theater on the campus of Georgia State University in Atlanta. Since then, The Bharat Shah Leadership Speaker Series has grown into an endeavor that has introduced thousands of aspiring leaders to top executives in the U.S. hospitality industry: Chris Nassetta, Arne Sorenson, Tom Baltimore, Mark Elliott, and Mark Hoplamazian. Mit shares the beginning of his storytelling journey and what he's learned about business, leadership and himself while prepping for and conducting the interviews. We also feature segments of the recorded interviews with all of the guests.
Happy Christmas Eve! As promised, the Narada Radio Co. proudly presents a recording of a recent live performance -- a remake of the 1947 broadcast of "The Lux Radio Theatre: 'It's a Wonderful Life'"! We performed at the Rialto Theater in Aransas Pass, Texas, over two weekends in December 2018, to small, yet appreciative audiences. (Some lines from a 1947 "Camel Screen Players" radio broadcast were added to this production.) Please do your best to overlook the technical and sound anomalies present in this recording. They couldn't be helped, and couldn't be removed fully in post-production. As I indicated in yesterday's post, we really had a wonderful year! We created new audio dramas in 2018 for Pulp-Pourri Theatre, for Jake Dimes Range Detective, for Sonic Summerstock, and for 11th Hour Audio, and we brought live audio drama to three venues in South Texas.
