Joining me on today's episode of The English Wine Diaries is Luke Spalding General Manager at Everflyht Vineyard in East Sussex. With a background in wine studies from Plumpton Wine Division, and having worked at nearby vineyard, Ridgeview, Luke joined the Everflyht single vineyard estate in 2019 just two years after owners Ben and Sam Ellis planted the first vines. As well as planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier on their land, which sits at the bottom of Ditchling Beacon, they also set aside acreage for biodiversity and have since planted trees, hedgerow and integrated wildflower meadows within the vineyard. It is here where Luke's passion for regenerative farming has come into its own. At Everflyht, he blends data-driven expertise with hands-on application to champion regenerative viticulture by creating sustainable practices that not only benefit the environment but produce award-winning – and may I add blinking good value – premium sparkling wines. We have a very honest discussion about how Luke got into wine, why he believes you can should never be dogmatic when it comes to making wine and his hopes for the Royals to one day visit Everflyht. Catch up with Everflyht's new releases and other news on Instagram @everflyht and at everflyht.com. To hear more about how the Everflyht story began, listen back to owners Ben and Sam Ellis' on episode 41 of the podcast. With thanks to our series sponsor, Wickhams, The Great British Wine Merchant. Prequel Skin is less than a year old. But the direct-to-consumer brand, founded by dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis, in partnership with Ben Bennett's incubator, The Center, has caught on. That can be owed, at least in part, to Ellis's social following: She has 336,000 YouTube subscribers, 226,000 Instagram followers and over 129,000 followers on TikTok. The brand's products span multitasking cleansers and moisturizers for the face and body, skin barrier-boosting ointments and a duo of serums, including one with vitamin C and one meant to address skin redness. On this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Dr. Ellis discusses how she came to create content as a dermatologist, why that's proven valuable, why she partnered with The Center and how her brand is inspired by favorite French pharmacy products.
Why a detective is studying blood spatters in zero-gravityThere hasn't been a murder on the International Space Station — yet. But Crime Scene Investigator Zack Kowalske has been studying how blood spatters in microgravity so that when someone does commit the first astro-cide, he'll be able to use science to figure out whodunit. Kowalske sent a blood substitute for a ride on a parabolic microgravity flight to study how the absence of gravity changes how it moves, and discovered that surface tension takes over to shape how the blood splatters. The research was published in the journal Forensic Science International Reports.Lifting the fog to let starlight shine through at the cosmic dawnNot too long after the Big Bang, the universe went dark for many millions of years. Stars, black holes and galaxies began to form, but the universe was full of a cosmic fog in the form of light-absorbing hydrogen gas that blocked light from shining through. Hakim Atek, from the Paris Institute of Astrophysics led a group that used the James Webb Space Telescope to identify what cleared that fog: dwarf galaxies. In his new study in the journal Nature, Atek describes how young and tiny galaxies full of super-bright stars emitted enough radiation to burn through the fog and fill the universe with light. Do whales get hot flashes? They have menopauseWe don't know if whales experience the same symptoms as human women, but in five known species of toothed whales, females do experience menopause. This is unusual as extended post-reproductive life is very rare in mammals — most of the time animals reproduce until the end of their lifespan. A new study led by Sam Ellis from the University of Exeter suggests that they have it for the same reason humans are thought to: because grandmothers are useful to have around. The research was published in the journal Nature.Bees can learn tasks that are more complicated than they can inventResearchers have laboriously taught bumblebees a complex, multi-step task that they never would have learned in nature, and found that once they learned it, other bumblebees could learn to do it from then. This suggests that they share with humans the ability to hold cultural knowledge that exceeds their own innovative capabilities. Behavioural scientist Alice Bridges was part of the team and the research was published in the journal Nature. Our planet's circulatory system depends on animals eating, excreting and expiringDid you know our planet has a circulatory system? It moves vast amounts of nutrients over huge distances, processing them to extract energy and efficiently recycle them as well. It's called animal life, and in a new book called Eat, Poop, Die: How Animals Make Our World, biologist Joe Roman explains how it works — and how restoring wild animal populations might be the best nature-based tool we have to beat the climate crisis.

Good morning everyone and welcome to the ranch collective podcast! On this show, we talk about all things agriculture and western lifestyle and have real conversations with people who are involved- from the farmer to the barrel racer to the vet tech. I missed you guys last week- and I'm so happy to be back. I don't know if anyone actually liked the life updates you used to get at the top of the show, but you're gonna get some today! I came home the Friday after the last episode I released, and pretty much slept except to eat and shower until Tuesday morning. That was a week ago yesterday, and you can still hear the congestion in my voice- SO I'm on the mend but definitely not 100% yet. Next thing is that from now until the end of June, the pod schedule will be a little up in the air because we are making a trip to Reno for a wedding next week, and then my family comes to visit us for the next couple of weeks immediately after that. I plan on sharing episodes during that time, but I may not because I'll be prioritizing family time. You can find out from my social media if there will be an episode! Thirdly- I still have podcast stickers. You can find them on Etsy if you want one. It's been a while since I mentioned that- but they're there. There's a link in the show notes. Lastly- and this is with a heavy heart- a moment of silence for Lynlee. I didn't personally know her, but a lot of you did, and I do know what losing someone feels like, and my heart breaks for every single one of you who feels the loss of Lynlee in your soul. I won't use her suicide as a launching point for a mental health discussion but the national suicide hotline number is 988, and you can text or call that number in crisis- and I hope that you do. Today I'm speaking with Sam from Due West and she artificially inseminates cows, and I know nothing about that process, so im thrilled to have her to chat with. This week, we are discussing how AI works, and dispelling some misconceptions. Just a warning, we do get into some graphic descriptions of the AI process, we talk about sexual assault, and I tell a story about my IUD insertion so this episode is explicit. I hope you all enjoy, and I'm so happy you're here. Myself and Howard talk to Sam Ellis the guitarist/vocals of Ilenkus about his new project 'Apogean Tide'. Sam did everything himself - writing, recording, mixing, mastering and brought in Rory of Ilenkus to help with the drums/programing. We cover a lot of subjects in this chat, his time touring with Ilenkus, how he approaches his new solo work, what's it like to work on his own away from the dynamics of a band and what forms his ideas for lyrics. He readily admits that this is a learning experience with the end goal of him becoming a better producer. He is currently in the process of releasing a single every couple of months. Hope you enjoy the episode, if so hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel. Thanks Richie.
