Somaya Critchlow talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Critchlow, born in London in 1993, makes paintings and drawings of Black women, often nude, that are rooted in the present and yet draw on a wealth of imagery from the recent and distant past. The women are fictional but can be informed by anything from self-portraits and other life studies to images from pop culture and depictions of women in the history of art. They engage frankly with what it means to represent the female body and with power relations: between the artist and her subject, between the subject and the viewer, and ultimately between Critchlow and us. Depending on your perspective, her art offers different degrees of delight and discomfort. But her balance of fine drawing, a time-honoured approach to paint and colour, and arresting imagery means that her work is endlessly intriguing. She discusses the breakthrough moment where she realised that she was her own first model, being “comfortable with feeling uncomfortable”, the influence on her of Angela Carter's response to the Marquis de Sade, her engagement with a wealth of visual artists, from Käthe Kollwitz to Francesca Woodman, Leonor Fini, Titian and Francesco de Goya, the power of David Lynch's films and the consistent importance to her of Japanese manga. She gives insight into her life in the studio and responds to our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Somaya Critchlow: The Chamber, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, until 20 July. Group shows: A Room Hung with Thoughts British Painting Now, Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas, US, until 11 May; Woman in a Rowboat, Olivia Foundation, Mexico City, until 28 September. This podcast is sponsored by Bloomberg Connects, the arts and culture app. The free app offers access to a vast range of international cultural organisations through a single download, with new guides being added regularly. There is also extensive content on the gallery's other exhibition, Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious, the first major exhibition of the British artist. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Adam Growe. You may know him a standup comedian, a corporate entertainer or even a foster parent to seven children. But he's likely most recognized as being Canada's favourite cab driver. He hosted the Canadian trivia-based game show "Cash Cab" for roughly eight years between 2008 and 2015, in which he'd quiz unsuspecting riders with general knowledge questions for their chance to collect money while he drove them from place to place. “Cash Cab” and Adam Growe return with a new spin on the old show… “Cash Cab Music.” Adam is back behind the wheel of a newly-renovated disco taxi, testing his cab customers on musical trivia. Get three wrong and you're out but get the answers right and you can win cash and even sing some karaoke. Then, we get to know Shilpi Somaya Gowda is the New York Times bestselling, award-winning author whose novels have been translated into over 30 languages, been #1 international bestsellers in several countries and sold more than two million copies worldwide. Her newest book, “A Great Country,” has been named an Anticipated/Top Book of 2024 by over a dozen publications, a Heather's Pick at Indigo, and received a starred review from Publishers' Weekly.

"What is it like to be a young artist growing up - what are your reference points and how do you take ownership and claim that history?” Taking inspiration from 1950s porn magazines, Lucian Freud and her grandfather, the young British artist Somaya Critchlow creates intimate paintings that reclaim ownership of the Black female nude.Danielle visits The Lightbox, the regional contemporary art gallery in Surrey, where recently-appointed director Sarah Brown made the unconventional decision to showcase an exhibition of works by Lucian Freud alongside an adjacent exhibition, curated by the young British female artist, Somaya Critchlow. Running until the 19th March 2023, the Freud side of the exhibition features a range of portraits, nudes and photos, spanning the artist's career; while the Soul as Sphere, which sits in the same room, is filled with works by Somaya's grandfather, the artists and expert in sacred geometry Keith Critchlow, as well as pieces by his contemporaries such as Frank Auerback and Leon , and some by Somaya herself. The effect is highly complimentary and serves to afford the viewer the chance to look at Freud through a fresh - namely female and contemporary - lens. Speaking separately to both Sarah and Somaya, Danielle gets to hear about their motivations and inspirations behind the project. Image courtesy of the artist and Blau International. Somaya Faruqi is one of the lucky ones. She managed to escape from Afghanistan in August 2021, just as the Taliban overran the country's capital. Today, while the 20-year-old engineering student pursues a degree at Missouri S&T university in the US, her former classmates back home have been banned from the classroom by the de facto authorities. In support of this week's Education Cannot Wait conference in Geneva and its call for learning support in emergencies, Somaya has been speaking to UN News's Daniel Johnson. She strongly believes education can help change discriminatory views about girls, women and their place in society.
In the years after the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan, women made tremendous gains in the country. In particular, they were able to be educated and become leaders in fields like engineering, as Somaya Faruqi and Roya Mahboob did. The Afghan Girls Robotics Team, founded by Roya and captained by Somaya, even stepped up during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to make low-cost ventilators out of car parts to help fill a desperate need in their country.Roya and Somaya were able to escape Afghanistan before the Taliban returned to power and once again took rights away from women in the country. The drone strike that the Pentagon claimed killed an ISIS-K suicide bomber in Kabul actually targeted an aid worker who had filled his car with water jugs, rather than explosives, according to a shocking new report. Zemari Ahmadi, 43, was driving the 1996 Toyota Corolla that was destroyed in the August 29 drone strike, killing him and nine family members, including seven children, according to a New York Times investigation. According to the Times, killed in the drone strike were Ahmadi and three of his children, Zamir, 20, Faisal, 16, and Farzad, 10; Ahmadi's cousin Naser, 30; three of Ahmadi's nephews, Arwin, seven, Benyamin, six, and Hayat, two; and two three-year-old girls, Malika and Somaya. The drone strike in Kabul came as US forces were on high alert following an ISIS-K suicide blast on August 26 that killed 13 US troops and scores of Afghans on August 26. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/global-reportage/support

In episode 34 of The Great Women Artists Podcast, Katy Hessel interviews one of the most exciting and brilliant young painters working in the world right now, the great SOMAYA CRITCHLOW!! [This episode is brought to you by Alighieri jewellery: www.alighieri.co.uk | use the code TGWA at checkout for 10% off!] A graduate of Brighton University and The Royal Drawing School, Somaya is known for her powerful depictions of bold female characters and delicately rendered objects – that she creates on both a mid-size and minute scale! Challenging and subverting cultural expectations of race, gender, and power in the history of art, Somaya’s sometimes icon-like work adopts historical and classical motifs from the likes of Rubens to Velazquez. Although rooted in historical imagery, her works fuse traditional painting with the modern day, referencing film to hip hop, which she explores in depth through commenting on the cultural, class and political dynamics of contemporary society. In this episode we discuss painting the female nude, and challenging past perceptions and institutional norms; Somaya's interest in the work of feminist writer Angela Carter; subverting cultural expectations and what feminism means today; her early interest in objects and museums; film and television; as well as an in-depth exploration into her current INCREDIBLE solo exhibition, "Underneath a Bepop Moon" at Maximillian William (on view until 15 August!). Russell and Robert meet British artist Somaya Critchlow whose figurative paintings of women explore facets of race, sex and culture. Working mostly on a small scale, her works depict bold, curvaceous and self-possessed female characters, of her own creation, that simultaneously combine and subvert the culture expectations of race, gender and power in the history of portraiture. They are self-reflective and personal, and at the same time commentary of the cultural, class and political dynamics of contemporary society. We discuss the bringing together of pop culture influences including 'Love and Hip Hop', Cardi B, Lil' Kim, Nicki Minaj with artistic influences of Rubens, Renaissance masters and European miniatures. We explore her alienation from the art history she studied growing up and the lack of representation, tying in autobiographical references in her new works, her response to the death and problematic life of rapper XXXTentacion, the paintings of Lisa Yuskavage, Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, Lucy Stein, cartoonist Robert Crumb, architect Carlo Mollino and filmmaker David Lynch. We discuss the appeal of 1960s-70s style, kitsch, vintage erotica, life-drawing and the writing of Angela Carter including her feminist reappraisal of the Marquis de Sade’s books. We also chat about the more recent movement to openly discuss body image, sexuality and representation in the mainstream including writer/documentary maker Chidera Eggerue and Instagram community iWeigh.Somaya’s forthcoming solo exhibition ‘Underneath a Bebop Moon’ will be at Maximillian William, London.
Devanshi is a dear friend and although I know a lot about her background, I really enjoyed listening to her describe her parents’ immigrant experience. Her family’s story demanded not only great courage and adventure but also real personal sacrifice – all to help position Devanshi to pursue the opportunities that she’s now enjoying. Devanshi is incredibly ambitious but brings such a refreshing – and unique -- savor-the-moment perspective to each step of her journey. I’ve certainly benefited from her approach as her close friend, and I hope you will too.

One of the things I love most about Leela is how brutally, painfully honest she is. In this episode, she is generously open about her flaws, the lies we tell ourselves and how to create transformation from it (via personal experience) and how to truly embrace femininity in your business.
