“Flat earth is just a troll thing, right? People don't really believe that…”   Picking up right where we left off on our previous HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION episode with even more stories of metal nostalgia and teenage retardity as we reflect on the pressing issues of the day during our high school residency.    “The bathrooms are over there, Everest is over there, and you've gotta be this high to ride the ride…”   From the discovery journeys that led us to our favorite bands to the band that was considered “the next level of ‘Shout At The Devil'”, we go further down the rabbit hole and assess how the 70's factored into our respective musical paths as well as uncover a potentially jarring shortlist of metal (and non-metal) bands that were hugely popular that we just didn't (and/or couldn't) connect with.   “…AKA The Flat Earth Emporium.”   Find out what it's like to enjoy “a little Mr. Black with some Elijah Craig on top”, discover why having hellions for children means “they're gonna be good prayerents when they get older”, understand that sometimes you're just not “mature enough to appreciate Reign In Blood” (especially if you “didn't have enough pubes to handle it”), and realize that flat earth people can be a great resource for discovering new music when you JOIN US for ROUND 2 of the HEAVY METAL HIGH SCHOOL REUNION BUNKERPOON BLOWOUT BONANZA!!! It's the Rev Stef doing Slayer doing The Phantom of the Opera…...so yeah. But there's fun stuff like Jezebel, she's pretty promiscuous (allegedly). And Lord Byron he's very promiscuous (definitely). Key Changes: Dan Spitz

Second Act Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2026 51:08

This week we're sharing a series of episodes that capture one of our favorite themes on Second Act Stories: the moment when life changes key. These Key Changes episodes feature people whose lives have been shaped by music: some who left it behind for something new; others who found their way to it later than expected. Together, they're the stories we return to when we want to show how reinvention really works, not as a clean break, but as a shift in rhythm, perspective, and purpose. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering the show, these episodes reflect the heart of the podcast: bold pivots, unexpected harmony, and second acts that still have plenty to say. Dan Spitz is a true pioneer in every sense of the word. As the lead guitarist of legendary band Anthrax, Dan was one of the innovators who birthed the entire genre of thrash metal music. Anthrax is one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands, a group that also includes Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. He sold millions of albums, played on the world's biggest stages, and saw his music influence legions of acts that would follow. In 1995, as Anthrax continued to reach new heights, something changed. Dan realized his heart was no longer in it, so he quit the band without a plan for what was next. Dan had been exposed to watchmaking at a young age through his grandfather, who owned a jewelry store where he repaired watches in New York's Catskill Mountains. That childhood experience came rushing back when he stumbled across an ad for the Bulova watchmaking school. The pieces fit together as perfectly as the mechanics of a complicated watch, and Dan enrolled, graduating a four-year program in 18 months. Then he became the first American to be accepted into a Swiss watchmaking school, and his incredible second act was official. Today, Dan is one of the world's most sought-after master watchmakers. He's the watchmaker who watchmakers go to when they can't solve a problem. In this episode, you'll hear some of the details about the birth of thrash metal, the conflict that led to Dan's departure from Anthrax, and the journey that led a thrash metal legend become a legend in the world of fine watches. You can learn more about Dan Spitz by visiting his website at www.delraybeachvintagewatches.com, and www.danspitz.com. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. #334 METAL? or NOT METAL?

Metal Nerdery

“Is it metal? Or is it NOT metal?”   As metalheads, we've all heard some variation of this argument at least once in our lives, and the further down the rabbit hole we go, the more we truly reflect on what makes something obviously metal or obviously NOT metal.    “Fish teeth is metal as fuck…”   What's the lyrical content like? The darker the subject matter, the more metal it is. Lyrics about love and happiness might be considered less metal than lyrics about drugs and wizards, or other more doom and gloom topics.   “If it was distorted as fuck, then it would be metal. But it's not, so it's rock and roll…”   How about production? How does it sound? Is it distorted and heavy? Is it really fast or extremely aggressive? More distortion and more speed in the sound equals more metal.    “He's getting high with a wizard, dude…that's pretty metal…”   Many of us who grew up with the likes of Ozzy, Dio, and Motley Crue in the early 80's could easily tell when the boundaries started to shift between rock and metal. And of course, those are the easiest artists to reference as they each capture the majority of the traits that inherently make them metal artists: intensity and attitude, darkness and speed, distortion and heaviness.   “When I think of metal, I think of…Metal Church…”   There are some instances where it's obvious whether or not something is metal (or not), and there are some where it's not quite as cut and dry. So, if you'd like to get our take, be sure to JOIN US (along with our special guest for this episode, Mr. Bonerman) deep in The Bunkerpoon as we attempt to settle the great debate of METAL? OR NOT METAL? Rock and roll is not rock and roll without a beat. John Lingan's new book, BACKBEATS: A History of Rock and Roll in 15 Drummers (Scribner; Publication date: November 11, 2025) is an electrifying journey through the history of rock and roll, told through the lives of fifteen iconic drummers and their percussion rivals-from John Bonham and Charlie Watts to Ringo Starr and Questlove.Rock and roll thrives on rhythm, but the drummers who drive that pulse often stay in the shadows. In BACKBEATS, acclaimed music historian John Lingan brings these unsung heroes into the spotlight, delivering a fascinating journey through six decades of rock history.Lingan's deep research and vivid storytelling explores the lives of fifteen pathbreaking drummers and their fellow timekeepers-men and women who together laid down the beat of an era. From Bernard Purdie's legendary work with Aretha Franklin to Dave Grohl's funk- and punk-indebted swing for Nirvana, these drummers redefined what was possible in pop music. Iconic figures like Ringo Starr, whose inventive style transformed the Beatles, and Charlie Watts, the steady backbone of the Rolling Stones, take center stage. But Lingan doesn't stop there-he also shines a light on Hal Blaine, the backbone of the LA studio scene's "Wrecking Crew," groundbreaking, underappreciated talents like Maureen Tucker of The Velvet Underground, whose minimalist beats rewrote the rulebook, and Sam Lay, a pivotal figure in rock's evolution from the blues.Packed with insider stories and exclusive interviews-from Robert Plant's reflections on Led Zeppelin's legendary sessions to revered recording engineer Steve Albini's behind-the-scenes accounts-BACKBEATS offers an eye-opening glimpse into some of rock's most unforgettable moments, including the seismic shift of Bob Dylan going electric at Newport, James Brown's explosive creation of funk in the late sixties, and Slayer's role in the birth of LA thrash metal in the early eighties.More than just a tribute to an unrecognized group of virtuosos, this book is a love letter to the art of drumming itself. BACKBEATS shows how these remarkable artists not only kept the beat but drove rock and roll forward. It's a must-read for any music lover, offering a fresh and thrilling perspective on a story we only thought we knew.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Welcome to 2026 — and the Disrupt Education Podcast's 10th year — with one word leading the charge: Bold. Peter and Alli kick off a brand-new 4-part series with Jeremy Smith, founder and CEO of PEGA6, and he doesn't tiptoe into the conversation… he kicks the door in.Jeremy shares his path from investment banking and multiple startup exits to building what he calls a totally new kind of higher ed: a one-year, $15K, career accelerator designed for the AI age. His claim is simple and explosive: the only thing most universities reliably provide is a “stamp,” not real readiness. Students leave with debt, time lost, and too often no practical skills—while employers are stuck spending the first year turning new hires from zero to one. From there, the episode gets real:Jeremy argues universities only lower prices when forced by real competition (and he believes universities can't compete with a faster, cheaper, experiential model). He breaks down who gets harmed by the status quo (parents, students, employers… basically everyone) and who benefits (universities). He connects the entry-level job squeeze to a brutal reality: AI tools don't have to be amazing to replace grads—because many grads show up unprepared. The conversation also hits a key instructional truth you and I both love: skills only develop through doing. Jeremy uses the bike-riding analogy to torch the lecture-test-textbook model for skill-building, pushing “just-in-time fundamentals” after failure and experience—not frontloaded theory. The episode ends by teasing Part 2: Workforce Engineering, and Jeremy's belief that education should function less like a pipeline and more like a supply chain—starting with what employers actually need and building backward from there. This isn't a polite conversation about education reform. It's a blueprint to burn down a broken model and build something that actually prepares students to win alongside AI.If you came this far... head to www.pega6.com/dep You won't be disappointed!

“I wonder if we'll get a cease and desist on this episode…”   Generally speaking, whenever someone says “Slayer” or “Metallica”, you think of two veteran thrash bands which both formed in 1981 and both released their debut albums in 1983. This is common knowledge among most fans of both of these bands.    Ironically, there's another band who follows this exact same timeline of forming in 1981 and releasing their debut album in 1983, yet at the time, they were NOT at all thrashy…not even close.    Most of us know of PANTERA as the brutally heavy, groove metal masters from Arlington, Texas who lit a proverbial fire under the ass of the thrash and heavy music scene in 1990 with their “major label” debut album (with the emphasis, in this case, on the words “major label”) as CFH was actually their FIFTH studio album.    Fifth? Wait a minute…what about THE FIRST FOUR studio albums!? And why are those albums not talked about and celebrated just like all things PANTERA!?    Well, there's a reason that THE FIRST FOUR aren't really talked about or acknowledged. Actually, there are probably a multitude of reasons, but the most glaring one is the stylistic difference between their early glam and power metal days and the heavier, grittier era when they truly became the “Cowboys From Hell”.    Remember those awkward Olan Mills pictures you used to take with the family, or better yet, the pictures of you in high school with that absurd, dorky hairstyle that people always like to bring up in conversation? That's kinda what THE FIRST FOUR ALBUMS by PANTERA were like.   Always remember that “Dokken is better than KISS” and you absolutely have to “pill up before PT”. Find out why “concubine” is a much cooler term than girlfriend, why the stress of having multiple families can be fatal, and realize that most doctors' definition of “prescription pain medication” is painfully incorrect and a complete waste of a prescription pad.    Get ready to find out which Pantera album came out on Rex's 20th birthday, which song features Dime on lead vocals, and understand that while we absolutely did not plan for this to be episode 333, it just so happened to turn out that way.    Brace yourselves and get your relaxers ready before you JOIN US as we go back to the 80's to get a better idea of why one of the greatest metal bands of all time tried to bury their earliest work (and original “not as metal” logo) with THE FIRST FOUR from the mighty PANTERA. In April 1974, 16-year-old Danita Ann Cash drove to the abandoned Trinity River Bridge, better known in local lore as “Screaming Bridge,” to pick up her brother from target practice. But instead of finding the boys, she encountered a stranger with a shotgun who forced his way into her car. What began as a routine favor turned into a harrowing abduction attempt that Danita survived only through courage, calm decisions, and faith. Her escape would set off a police investigation that quickly zeroed in on a young carpet layer with a dark trail behind him, a man investigators believed might be responsible for other brutal attacks and unsolved murders across Fort Worth, namely the abduction and murder of 17-year-old Carla Walker the previous February. This is the terrifying true story of the day evil stepped out of the woods in broad daylight — and a teenager fought for her life. You can support Of Hell and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcast#TexasTrueCrime #FortWorthCrime #UnsolvedTexas #TrueCrimePodcast #OfHellPodcast #SlayerSaint #DanitaCash #CarlaWalkerCase #1970sTrueCrime #TexasHistory #ColdCaseTexas #DFWCrime #KidnappingSurvivor #ScreamingBridge #TrueCrimeCommunity #TrueCrimeAddict #TrueCrimeObsessed #TrueCrimeStories #CrimePodcast #PodcastLife #ListenNow #PodcastersOfInstagram #SerialPredator #JusticeForVictims #StayAwareBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gone-cold-texas-true-crime--3203003/support.

Today Eric focuses on the concept of challenging traditional methods—or the mindset of "that's the way I've always done it"—within business, specifically contracting and the aquatic hobby. Triplet emphasizes the importance of innovation and efficiency, using examples like adopting new software (CompanyCam) to dramatically shorten the time spent on client reports, moving from burning CDs to using digital playlists, and ditching physical blueprints for digital plans. The conversation also explores the psychological traps that keep contractors stuck in outdated, less-profitable routines, highlighting that clinging to old methods can prevent necessary growth and adaptation to modern technology. Ultimately, Eric and his guests advocate for staying open-minded and ready to pivot rather than being rigidly attached to established, even if suboptimal, practices. Key Takeaways: Always keep your mind open to suggestions and new ideas for improvement. Continuously look for innovation to create efficiencies and collapse time in your processes. Stay nimble and be ready to pivot and adjust your approach when situations change. Do not blindly accept long-standing practices; verify facts and question the way things have always been done. Maintain knowledge of old methods and foundational skills in case new technology fails or is unavailable.

Eric is joined by guests Tyson and Slayer in an episode conducted in a rapid-fire Q&A format. The discussion focuses on personal and professional experiences within the contracting and construction trades, covering topics such as favorite tools, regrettable purchasing decisions, scary job site moments, difficult phone calls, and times they felt "stuck" in their careers. They also share advice for their younger selves and discuss hypothetical actions if they won the lottery, with the overall aim of offering industry insights and personal anecdotes to entrepreneurs and pond professionals. Key Takeaways: Always invest in quality tools and equipment instead of choosing cheaper options. Be vigilant and avoid rushing when performing dangerous or critical work tasks. Begin each workday with a positive attitude and strive to be present for others. Utilize time blocking and detailed scheduling to focus on important long-term vision projects. Start saving a set amount of money regularly from an early age for a secure future.
