The Avalanche have won six straight and look every bit like a Stanley Cup favourite, Ray notes it feels like they are in a window right now with Makar's next deal 2 years away and last year’s bold overhaul in goal. Winnipeg extended captain Adam Lowry at five years times $5 million—a fair deal for a 32-year-old leader—though Ray is surprised by the league-wide trend of signing players into their age-36/37 seasons. The Oilers continue to struggle badly, losing to Washington amid alarming defensive breakdowns; despite criticism of the goaltending, Edmonton’s team play has been atrocious, they rank last in goals against and save percentage. The Rangers are dealing with backlash toward captain J.T. Miller after he appeared to quit on a play that led to Vegas’ 2–0 goal—an effort Ray compared to a preseason vibe and something New York fans won’t tolerate. Meanwhile, Patrick Roy was caught on a hot mic furious over Mikko Rantanen’s hit from behind on Alexander Romanov, who will miss significant time; Ray didn’t like the hit either and felt it warranted a suspension.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Professional hockey was a different game in the mid 70's that it is today. Whether it's better or more entertaining is up for debate, but what is not up for debate is back then, there was a level of brutality that the sport fully allowed if not encouraged. Fighting was as part of the game as goals and saves, checks and assists. Bobby Clark was the 2nd leading scorer in the NHL's 1975-76 season with 119 points for the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Flyers. But he had help and he had protection. The Broad Street Bullies as the Flyers were affectionately known in Philadelphia would come into an opposing arena, score goals, beat you up, and leave town with a smile on their face. And they used that recipe to hoist the Cup in 1974 and 1975. And nobody embodied that persona more than Dave ‘The Hammer' Schultz. In 1974 he set a record for penalty minutes in one season with 472, a tally that 50 years later still stands. The Hammer was known to drop the gloves at the drop of a hat… but he had a job to do and he did it well… Protect Captain Clark and high scoring forwards Bill Barber, Reggie Leach, and Rick "The Hawk" MacLeish. This helped lead Philly to a record of 51-13-16 in '75-76 and a 3rd straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. But after thrilling wins over Boston in '74 and Buffalo in '75, the Flyers were swept aside by the Canadiens in '76 ending their run as the league's top team. Still, the team was a force on the ice and with a healthy Bernie Parent back in the nets after the disappointing loss to Montreal, the Flyers were still major contenders for the Cup With Clark, Barber and Dave Schultz going into the 1976 season. But on September 29, 1976, a week before the start of the season, The Hammer was sent to Los Angeles for two draft picks. And just like that, the Broad Street Bullies were no more. The end of an era and for Schultz, the beginning of the end of his career. This Flyer was now a King, then a Penguin and finally a Sabre before retiring following the 1980 season. His heart was broken when he left Philly and he and the Flyers were never the same without each other. Philadelphia hasn't won a Stanley Cup since. Now, 50 years later, Dave has written a book called ‘Hammered': The Fight of my Life where Schultz talks openly about his lifelong battle with alcohol and how getting sober in his 70's is the biggest win of his life. He tells us how being sent away to L.A. —“not traded”— was a blow to him that he never fully accepted and how he will always be a Flyer. He recollects how he'd be admonished for fighting by NHL President Clarence Campbell only to never hear from him and that the league said one thing publicly about players fighting and yet did nothing to stop it. His job was to fight, and stand up for his teammates and protect them at all costs… and he did it very well. It's Hammer time on the Past Our Prime podcast. The Steelers activated Will Howard today. Is there any shot he becomes a good QB in the NFL? Or should we just look at the draft stock and give him no chance? It's easy to point to the Steelers as the blame here more than anything, but the guys discussed what he could look like if given an opportunity, referencing his numbers and what he had to work with at Ohio State. The Fan vs The Fans. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. TK said Erik Christensen had some of the best hands in hockey that he's ever seen – relating to the Penguins' struggles in shootouts. Tyler said the Penguins are starting to win him over, but the last 2 games have been very tough ones to lose. The guys discussed the difficulty between winning Stanley Cups back-to-back versus winning Cups a few years apart. Is Erik Karlsson a ‘born loser,' like Poni says? Would you take him over Kris Letang?

Cody Hodgson and The RYR-1 Foundation 11/11/25Diagnosed in 2016 with RYR-1-related malignant hyperthermia, Cody Hodgson's promising NHL playing career was cut short when the effects of his disease made it impossible for him to push his body to the extent necessary in pro hockey. However, what initially looked like a major setback gave way to a very different, equally powerful calling. Now an active ambassador for the Pittsburgh, PA-based RYR-1 Foundation, Hodgson is precisely the kind of figure in the hockey world that our production staff loves connecting with. With mobile recording gear in tow, our producer and co-host, Jeff Taylor recently joined the RYR-1 Foundation in Pittsburgh for their 10th anniversary conference. A handful of in-depth interviews were conducted that day, including with former NHL'er Cody Hodgson himself, as well as Toronto-based anesthesiologist Dr. Sheila Riazi, Hodgson's diagnosing physician. In this episode, we touch on the Blue Jay heartbreak, and the resilience of the Senators as they navigate their own challenges.Section 1: The Blue Jays' Disheartening Exit The Jays faced a gut-wrenching end to their season, losing crucial games six and seven of the World Series. "I just couldn't believe it. So many opportunities to win game six, so many opportunities to win game seven," lamented Gregg Kennedy, reflecting the sentiment of many fans who felt the weight of what could have been. Steve Warne highlighted how the Jays thrived on clutch performances, such as George Springer's game-changing three-run homer in the Seattle series. Yet, in the critical moments of the World Series, the expected clutch hits were absent.Section 2: The Senators' Resilience Amidst Challenges While the Blue Jays faced disappointment, the Senators have been on a rollercoaster of their own. With a record of 4-1-1 over their last six games, the Senators have shown resilience, battling back in games even when they fall behind. "You are what your record says you are," Kennedy noted, acknowledging that while their record may not reflect their performance, they are still banking valuable points as they find their footingThe Senators faced a tough loss against the Montreal Canadiens, where defensive lapses led to missed opportunities. Drake Batherson has stepped up spectacularly in the absence of captain Brady Tkachuk. With 15 points in his first 10 games, Batherson's performance has been a source of hope for fans. Despite a critical mistake that led to an overtime loss, his contributions have been key.Section 3: The Eastern Conference Landscape As the Senators continue their season, the Eastern Conference stands out this year with every team above .500 in terms of points percentage. "It's amazing that the number one team in the Eastern Conference, the Montreal Canadiens, only has a six-point lead on the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, who currently sit in last place," Warne remarked.
