Rolling hills and endless green pastures – those images are easy to conjure when thinking of the idyllic country lifestyle. When lockdowns descended upon many countries across the world during the pandemic, social media seemed to be dominated by pictures of cottages and village life – people getting away from it all. So, why is living in the countryside becoming a modern fantasy – and are there benefits to considering a slower pace of life? It makes sense that some people would want to give up the crowded and noisy city streets for the perceived tranquillity of the traditional country life – especially during an event like a pandemic. The lockdowns and extensive periods of working from home have given people time to think about what they want from life. But it's not just about having a greener place to look at out your window. There is more evidence that relates to the benefits of rural living. Villages aren't normally subject to the stop-go traffic we see in city centres, the buses fighting with taxis for dominance, or metro systems with trains that scream from one station to the next. In short, there's less air pollution in your country retreat – a thing which increases the chances of developing respiratory conditions or heart disease. You also get more opportunities to take long walks and see the sights, meaning you can get more exercise. Less noise, more walks and better air can also lead to less stress and an increased life expectancy, according to studies such as one conducted by the British government in 2012. However, there are some things that need to be considered. Living far from the hustle and bustle of the city means that some people may feel isolated or even lonely. And as people get older, life far from doctors or public transport could become a bit of a challenge. So, if you're considering a change of pace and moving to a picturesque village, there is a range of pros and cons to consider before taking the plunge. 词汇表rolling hills 绵延起伏的山丘pastures 牧场草地idyllic 田园风光的cottage 乡村小屋village 乡村get away from it all 抛开烦恼去休息、放松pace of life 生活节奏tranquillity 宁静rural 农村的,乡村的air pollution 空气污染retreat 退隐静养的地方life expectancy 预期寿命hustle and bustle 喧嚣繁忙isolated 与世隔绝的picturesque 风景如画的take the plunge 冒然决定尝试

Author Stories - Author Interviews, Writing Advice, Book Reviews
Helene Wecker's first novel, The Golem and the Jinni, was awarded the Mythopoeic Award for Adult Literature, the VCU Cabell Award for First Novel, and the Harold U. Ribalow Prize, and was nominated for a Nebula Award and a World Fantasy Award. A Midwest native, she holds a B.A. in English from Carleton College and an M.F.A. in Fiction Writing from Columbia University. Her work has appeared in literary journals such as Joyland and Catamaran, as well as the fantasy anthology The Djinn Falls in Love and Other Stories. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and children. The Hidden Palace: A Novel of the Golem and the Jinni "Richly nuanced and beautiful. . . . An immersive and magical tale of loneliness, love, and finding hope.” (Buzzfeed) “A layered novel of many complex characters…To keep their worlds safe, Chava and Ahmad must access both their greatest supernatural powers and their deepest human impulses.” (Historical Novels Review) In this enthralling historical epic, set in New York City and the Middle East in the years leading to World War I— the long-awaited follow-up to the acclaimed New York Times bestseller The Golem and the Jinni—Helene Wecker revisits her beloved characters Chava and Ahmad as they confront unexpected new challenges in a rapidly changing human world. Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they'll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human—just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined—but they're not yet certain of what they mean to each other. Both Chava and Ahmad have changed the lives of the people around them. Park Avenue heiress Sophia Winston, whose brief encounter with Ahmad left her with a strange illness that makes her shiver with cold, travels to the Middle East to seek a cure. There she meets Dima, a tempestuous female jinni who's been banished from her tribe. Back in New York, in a tenement on the Lower East Side, a little girl named Kreindel helps her rabbi father build a golem they name Yossele—not knowing that she's about to be sent to an orphanage uptown, where the hulking Yossele will become her only friend and protector. Spanning the tumultuous years from the turn of the twentieth century to the beginning of World War I, The Hidden Palace follows these lives and others as they collide and interleave. Can Chava and Ahmad find their places in the human world while remaining true to each other? Or will their opposing natures and desires eventually tear them apart—especially once they encounter, thrillingly, other beings like themselves?

This recording from January 5th, 2022. Signum master's student Elise Trudel Cedeño will present her thesis “Series Theory: Examining the Structure of the Modern Fantasy Epic” and respond to questions from the audience in an interactive Thesis Theater. The discussion will be facilitated by Elise's supervisor, Professor Kris Swank. Abstract: Series Theory is a new, critical approach to examining Modern Fantasy in a serial context. There are two disparate methods when analyzing fantasy series texts- either by way of their fantastic content or by discussing how the overall structure of the series contributes to their meaning. There is little scholarship that examines how the structure of a series adds to or fully composes the fantasy narrative. Series Theory, however, melds Structuralism and Seriality Studies concepts together by examining how the repeated patterns within a series set (trilogies, septologies, etc.) creates an exciting escape while remaining safe and consoled by the familiar, repetitive structures. This thesis aims to show how the overall structure of the Modern Fantasy epic, closed-ended series creates meaning to the fantastic through three key stages: the Repetition of familiar narrative structures, the progression and Elaboration of each repeated element, and finally closing with a Eucatastrophic event and the room for a new beginning. About the Presenter: Elise Trudel Cedeño makes magic by teaching Literacy and Literature through various homeschool platforms, including Signum Academy Clubs. She earned her B.A. at Wagner College and her Master of Arts in Teaching English at Teachers College, Columbia University. In her free time, when she has any, she fosters kittens with her local humane society, and she tries new recipes for delicious homemade pies. She lives in rural Massachusetts with her loving husband, and by the time this thesis airs, her first child will be making an arrival at any time. About Signum Thesis Theaters: Each of our master's students writes a thesis at the end of their degree program, exploring a topic of their choice. The Thesis Theater is their opportunity to present their research to a general audience, and answer questions. All are welcome to attend! 20 years ago the Lord Of The Rings trilogy blew the doors off the fantasy genre, opening the doors for Game Of Thrones and all that followed. Some 50 years back Marvel Comics paved the way for the birth of the Modern Fantasy movement by securing the rights to a pulp fantasy character that became the face of a franchise, inspiring a surge of sword & sorcery warriors from all publishers!

Written and directed by filmmaker Amy Frear, SELKIE is a modern fantasy short film centering a creature from Irish, Scottish, and Scandinavian myth.According to the lore, selkies are sea creatures resembling seals who can shed their skin and change into human form in order to walk on land.In the short film, one such entity follows a school of herring up the Delaware River. Curious about the surroundings, it sheds its seal-skin and transforms into a human woman to explore.A man discovers the seal-skin and steals it, trapping the selkie in its human form. It then becomes the man's reluctant girlfriend in an attempt to regain its skin in order to escape back to the sea.The short film is a beautiful and haunting metaphor for being entangled in an unhealthy relationship.EPISODE LINKS:SELKIE - The 7th Matrix Review: https://www.the7thmatrix.com/blog/2019/6/7/fantasy-short-film-selkieSupport the EYE ON SCI-FI Podcast & The 7th Matrix: https://the7thmatrix.com/supportSignup For The 7th Matrix Newsletter: http://bit.ly/31QnInnFollow The 7th Matrix On Twitter: https://twitter.com/the7thMatrixFollow The 7th Matrix On Instagram: https://instagram.com/the7thMatrixPodcast Intro/Outro music: "I Succumb" by António Bizarrohttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/Antnio_Bizarro/City_of_Industry_Slow_Gun/
This week, we’re chatting with Rafer Roberts, who’s writing “Grumble,” which follows a double-crossing wiseass warlock who transforms himself into a pug, and his half-demon daughter, as they hit the road to escape all sorts of mobsters, interdimensional enforcers and the Jersey-est Jersey Devil that ever was. We also check in with Roberts' "Modern Fantasy" partner, artist Kristen Gudsnuk, at Camden Comic Con.
What do you think of, when you think of the genre of fantasy? Whether it’s fiction, TV, cinema, or games, are there certain elements you need to have for something to be considered fantasy? Well, you might say fantasy is medieval, or at least set in a time of swords and sorcery. Or that fantasy has to be epic in scale; there are always grand and noble characters. Or maybe fantasy has to be set in an imaginary world. Or, at the very least, there should be some magic. But, as I explore on this episode. Some, or all, or none of these might be present in a work of fantasy. There's more to fantasy than you might expect. This week I chat to Dr Gerard Hynes to try to get the core of fantasy. We explore Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and the pop culture behemoth that is fantasy right now. We also look at a hugely diverse array of fantasy that goes far beyond what many people imagine when they think of the genre. Seventy years ago, if you walked into the right bar in Oxford, England, you might have heard J.R.R. Tolkien reading an epic poem, about dwarves searching for lost gold, a love beset by evil times, or a great Ring of Power that conquers men's hearts. Maybe you'd scoff at it, and join the likes of C.S. Lewis in yelling out "nay," if just for a laugh. You have joined a meeting of the Inklings, a group that included Lewis, and other writers, like Owen Barfield, J. A. W. Bennett, and more. Tolkien stands out as a titan in the group: a writer whose created stories within stories, languages and cultures, and brought history to life through age-old symbols, creatures, and epic poetry. INKLINGS MONTH is our celebration of this historic writing group, and the legends they created that would influence a generation of readers, writers, and storytellers in every medium. Tell us your favorite Tolkien tome, tale, or trope on Facebook or Twitter! Inklings Month is about connecting with fans like you. And don't forget to join as on Melissa's YouTube channel, Momtoast, for our discussion of "On Fairy Stories." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unboxing-story/support

The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds.During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible, and helped me through the darkest time of my life.Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal.I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. They say the strongest form of advertisement is word of mouth, so I provide a video to a platform of readers to help get people talking. In Episode 92, Mark Lefebvre interviews Charles de Lint, who is the author of more than seventy books. Renowned as one of the trailblazers of the modern fantasy genre, Charles is the recipient of the World Fantasy, Aurora, Sunburst, and White Pine awards, among others. De Lint is a poet, folklorist, artist, songwriter and performer. He has written critical essays, music reviews, opinion columns and entries to encyclopedias, and has been the main book reviewer for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction since 1987. In the interview, Mark and Charles talk about: The underlying theme for de Lint's new book, The Wind in His Heart – accepting the past and how community and a connection with others can help us surmount the challenges we face in the present – but only if we can teach ourselves to open up and trust those around us How long de Lint has worked on the book through its various stages The connections this novel has to de Lint's popular Newford novels and stories The pattern of writing adult novel, young adult novel and then repeating that pattern until it was suggested to de Lint that he focus on the YA market for a while The readership of de Lints work, which spans from 12 to 82 years and how various folks have started with different introductory books to his work and then stuck with his writing no matter which direction he has taken The factors that led to de Lint experimenting with indie publishing; such as the fact that the digital/eBook rights to his books were never sold to a publisher The comparison between independent authors and independent musicians The true hybrid approach for The Wind in His Heart, with de Lint self-publishing the eBook as well as a standard trade paperback POD version of the book, but how PS Publishing, a specialty publisher in the UK is released a limited edition hardcover version of the book and how de Lint's agent ended up selling the audiobook rights to a major audiobook publisher The great success of an independent musician such as Ani DiFranco - https://www.righteousbabe.com/ The hopeful and optimistic viewpoint that de Lint draws when comparing the music industry to the publishing industry Some of the music that de Lint listened to when working on the novel, and how he believes that the southwest style music of Calexico (http://www.casadecalexico.com/) encapsulates the mood of the novel quite well How de Lint got into writing book reviews, interviews with authors and articles about writers and the reasons behind putting all that work into it Places where de Lint hangs out, such as the Facebook group The Mythic Café, with Charles de Lint and Company (https://www.facebook.com/groups/114379772019551/) The launch events for the novel: Ottawa (Sept 19th at The Savoy Brasserie - https://savoybrasserie.com/_ ) Toronto Oct 21st at Bakka Phoenix - http://www.bakkaphoenixbooks.com/) A few of the projects that de Lint is working on now for future release and the liberating joy he has experienced being able to follow his muse and just write the books he would like to write (rather than trying to follow a requirement from a contract) De Lint's advice for beginning writers Mark then talks about the “true hybrid” approach that de Lint has taken on his writing and publishing journey – effectively and efficiently dividing up the rights of his works, as well as the optimism not only inherent in de Lint's new novel, but in his overall approach to the opportunities available through digital publishing, and what writers can learn from embracing that spirit of hope and hard work. The Seward Whale Strike Tragedy, they called it. Twenty-five people dead. The worst accident in Alaska’s tourism history since Will Rogers’ plane went down in ‘35. Only one man left alive knows the truth of what really happened--the man everyone agrees caused the tragedy to start with. And if there’s one thing he’s sure of, the thing they hit that day was no whale. Presented here is his testimony, as transcribed for an interview with Paranorm Violations Magazine. This free online lecture is part of the Mythgard Academy Guest Lecture Series. Both mythical studies and the study of fairy-tales took on new importance during the early nineteenth century, along with the entirely new development of comparative philology. Jacob Grimm was in all three cases the pivotal figure. The relationship between them continued to fascinate both scholars and creative writers, including Andrew Lang, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and their successors. This lecture will show how scholarly research acted as a direct stimulus for many creative writers.
