An Anti-SLAPP: Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation. The Anti-SLAPP is devised to protect people from lawsuits that are set out to SILENCE or COERCE people for exercising their unalienable First Amendment right. FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Apparently, in New Jersey, Attorney Jessica Regno Sprauge wrote a letter to Judge Peter Bogaard with demands. Attorney Jessica Regno Sprauge would rather go on a trip to Cabo, sponsored by the New Jersey Bar. Due to this trip, it is keeping Cristin's seven year-old son from her. This is CHILD PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE (DSM V, V995.51) Cristin has always told the truth and there is no reason why jurisdiction cannot be moved down to Florida, so she can proceed with 50/50 custody. Several media outlets have picked up her story. The attacks on Pearl Harbor will always be a day that will “live in infamy,” as President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said. However, there is so much more to the story than Japan's singular treacherous actions against our brave U.S. Navy sailors in 1941. James Perloff discusses the chilling truth: President Roosevelt and many American officials knew about the incoming Japanese attack before it ever happened, and they did nothing to stop it. In fact, they coerced Japan to attack our very own Pacific Fleet. James is a writer and author who has researched American history and the roots of communism for decades and is also a writer for New American Magazine. He breaks down the reasons why the U.S. government wanted America to go to war in 1941, and how history has since been re-written. Historical Catholic teaching is that the church as well as the state is a potestas – a sovereign legal authority with the right to legislate and to enforce its legislation punitively. What conception of legal authority does this require? Thomas Pink visits the University of Notre Dame from King's College London to discuss. In his talk, Thomas Pink explains the concepts of legal authority and official theology within the church. We explore the role of magisterial teaching in shaping our beliefs and the distinction between canonical obligations and the intellectual and willing submission to fallible teachings. Understanding the nuances between magisterial authority, the educative purpose of legal authority, and the fluctuating nature of official theology across time and geography. Hear how historical perspectives on topics like the destiny of unbaptized children have evolved without corresponding changes in magisterial teaching, reflecting the dynamic nature of official theology. Join us as we discuss the implications of canonical legislation, the moral versus legal obligations they impose, and notable theological figures' interpretations, including distinctions made by Newman, Manning, and others, on papal infallibility in legislation. We will be discussing how Israel and the Mossad, excuse me - the Mob-ssad - have been spying on the international criminal court and threatening South African Ministers, but not in a sophisticated spy-agency James Bond villain type way. I'd say it was a mob way, like “I'll make the South African Foreign Minister an offer she can't refuse.” But according to these articles by the Guardian, Local Call, and +972 - the publications that broke this story - I'd say that Israeli conduct would actually be an insult to the mob.

Senior Intelligence Analyst and Whistleblower Russ Tice says not only should Congress not reauthorize 702, they should get rid of FISA altogether. He wants to know where in the Constitution does it say we should have a star chamber court that allows secret proceedings behind someone's back? Tice believes 702 is a front because NSA is already collecting everything we say or do. They're putting it in a warehouse so they can then say they're not surveilling, until someone actually listens to it. Tice says the 702 is a front to legitimize the collection and it should not be reinstated. Tice says a lot of politicians on the Hill are being blackmailed. They know NSA has information on them so they will kowtow to the police state, to the Deep State. NSA controls this communication and both the FBI and CIA get it from NSA. Tice says surveillance will continue no matter what Congress decides. With a wave of his hand, a President could declassify documents and that's all it takes. That's why the charges against Trump are outrageous. Ultimately, they will be thrown out because the President has that right. This is one more avenue they're throwing at President Trump to throw him off kilter and make sure he cannot win again. The gauntlet they're throwing at Trump is incredible and he must have a spine of titanium to put up with what they're doing to him. The mainstream media are no longer journalists. They're stenographers writing whatever they're told to pump out.GUEST: RUSS TICE, NSA SENIOR INTELLIGENCE ANALYST AND WHISTLEBLOWERSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On this episode we talk about how narcissists use coercion to get you to do whatever they want. Welcome my channel! If this is your first time seeing my face or hearing my voice, my name is Lee and I am a self aware narcissist. I have narcissistic personality disorder ( NPD ) and I've been in therapy for my personality disorder since 2017 and it has definitely changed my life because without it, I would have lost everything. The point of these videos is to help bring awareness from the other side of the narcissistic *buse spectrum. All my videos give perspective on why many narcissists do what they do and the possible different reasons behind them. The victims and survivors get validation and the Narcissists (those that are willing) get to see that you can get help and that you are not alone. EPISODE 61: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Am I really seeing this WaPo headline? "ANTISEMITES RALLY AROUND KANYE WEST" (3:20) As his agents, documentarians, and others drop him, Adidas does nothing while Adidas clients like The National Hockey League begin to feel the heat (3:35) and LAPD ties the 405 Freeway sign to antisemitic leaflets in Westwood (4:36) And something worse in Colorado: a Republican member of the State Board of Education has gotten the word "Nazis" replaced by "National Socialist German Workers Party" and demanded America acknowledge "this party was and is a socialist party." (7:05) The next stage has begun: assume a MAGA will come up to you shortly and say "Hitler was a Democrat. The holocaust is your fault. Antisemitism is your fault. Kanye West is your fault." Let's walk through his history: appointed as Chancellor by Conservatives, arrested Communists, sent Union Leaders to concentration camps, dissolved the Social Democratic Party, had Goebbels say "National Socialism opposes liberalism...liberalism broke under the blows." (14:00) On a much much much lighter note: you'll never believe who's advertising for a Concept-to-Consumer Manager? Yep: Adidas and Kanye. B-Block (17:09) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Jerry in Houston (18:08) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: DeSantis freezes when Crist asks him ONE debate question; Senate/Governor polling improves for Dems; Proud Boys embarrass Pen State; Coerce or Caress Walt Nauta and Kash Patel as Document investigators press hard for testimony (22:02) IN SPORTS: Yankees embarrassed themselves but Yankee fans did themselves proud saying helloooooo to Ted Cruz; my fellow giant-head Bruce Bochy gets a new gig; and you'll never believe who predicted, NINE YEARS AGO, that the next Phillies World Series appearance would be in 2022! (25:16) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Soccer's World Cup vies with Right Wing Troll Jacob Wohl and Justice Sam Alito - who gets pounded from beyond the grave by Ted Kennedy - for the honors. C-Block (30:04) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I paid $2000 plus a game ticket for it, but I promised never to run exclusive video of a near-brawl between Yankees' ace Roger Clemens and a Yankees fan in the middle of the 1999 World Series. What happens when you have facts, but not truth? You side with truth - and your bosses start looking for a reason to fire you. It's quite a saga.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ask Shaykh YQ – EP 269
When a person's faith and spiritual values are used to coerce, convince, or control and manipulate, devastating harm is done. Weaponized faith is all too common, and I see the trauma it causes in so many of the men and women who contact me for help. "Scripts" about the roles of men and women, and husbands and wives, are often conveyed by well-meaning religious leaders, but then, in the neurodivergent community, applied rigidly in a relationship. Both partners often participate in reinforcing a coercive and controlling dynamic that utilizes shame, guilt, and obligation to get one or both partner's needs met - both believing they are following the beliefs of their faith. This relationship is ultimately highly dysfunctional, and can become toxic and abusive. Take a moment to listen to my conversation with Dan and Stephanie Holmes, who are Christian neurodiverse relationship specialists. This concept applies to people of all faiths and value-systems because these same dynamics occur in any relationship where beliefs and values are used to manipulate. ___________________

Rev James Harden tells JT Pro-abortion politicians seem to be partnering with the mainstream media in order to silence pro-life organizations before the truth about the abortion industry's consumer fraud can get out. Women deserve to be given the information needed to make a truly informed decision. By hiding important health risks and silencing pro-life pregnancy centers, pro-abortion politicians and the abortion empire coerce women into getting abortions in order to further their own agendas and increase profits. In a post-Roe America, the abortion empire is continuing to deny women informed consent. In a similar way to how big tobacco obfuscated health and safety data, the abortion industry has been hiding important health and efficacy data from women. The chemical abortion businesses claim that “The Abortion Pill is Safer than Tylenol,” yet a study of women in Finland reports chemical abortion is 400% more dangerous than surgical abortion. Other side effects include undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies and potential for permanent infertility if the woman is not diagnosed as Rh negative. Women have a right to know the risks of having an abortion and all of their alternatives. The principle of informed consent is required for a woman to be truly autonomous. Yet, ironically, it is systematically disregarded by the abortion empire.
The Sales Management. Simplified. Podcast with Mike Weinberg
In this episode Mike tackles the first of the Four R's of Smart Sales Talent Management: Right People in the Right Roles and he introduces the concept of zookeeper-wired sellers. So many sales leaders live in perpetual frustration that their overly relational, account management minded salespeople will not hunt for new business. These “zookeepers” are wonderful people who live to keep the peace, enhance relationships, put out customer service fires, and service existing accounts, but most absolutely hate the conflict, risk, and rejection that accompanies hunting for new business. Prepare to be challenged as Mike asks if it is possible to coerce, coach, and compensate zookeepers to become successful hunters. He also turns conventional wisdom on its head by making the case that even the most successful “account managers” who consistently penetrate and grow revenue within existing accounts actually behave more like proactive hunters than reactive farmers/zookeepers. ______________________________________________________________________ Join Mike on either July 19th or 21st for a special session where he will offer 4 Practical Fixes for the Biggest Challenges Facing Sales Leaders Right Now. How do we square genetically influenced mental disorders with the theory of explanatory universality? In a previous episode, Tracy asked Bruce how to reconcile her experience with mental disorders, like narcissism, with the idea of Universal Explainers. This is part 2 of that discussion. In the last episode, Bruce introduced the idea that emotions and feelings aren't the same as ideas and go back to an earlier point in our evolutionary history. The genes then use our feelings to try to coerce us or encourage us via pleasures and pain. Bruce completes his list of possible ways genes can affect our personality and ideas without violating universality: The genes can control physiology and this in turn can impact our personality and ideas via interaction with existing (sometimes stable) culture The genes can control how we grow the various parts of the cortex and since those parts affect our ability to think, they affect our personality development as well as interests. The genes can control perceptions and this can in turn impact our ideas. The genes control how we're wired to pleasure and pain centers of the brain and can coerce or encourage us via these feelings. The genes control how we gain ideas via attention. The genes can affect culture via 1-5 above and then let culture do the heavy lifting Humans may be significantly affected by older animal modules of the brain in some cases. We have no reason to believe all knowledge we learn is via ‘the universal explainer' module. In addition, we discuss how the existence of insanity, dreams, and people who are extremely mentally challenged prove that there is such a thing as a person that is not a universal explainer but can still reason to a degree. See Steven Peck's "My Madness" for an amazing example. Then we introduce the strongest problem we currently know of: the extreme heritability of psychopathy in some children. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/four-strands/support

In this episode: Aristotle's Rhetorical Triangle, how I escaped a cult, why we must care about others, and how it can all be applied to persuasion, art creation, ideology, and modern life. We delve into some of the philosophical reasons behind what makes one “good” at rhetoric. I talk about how some of Lacan's, Freud's, and Jung's psychological writings can be used to cultivate authority, humanity, and logic. As I explain each pillar of the triangle, I'll then use that same method to analyze my own life to give a better idea of who I am: my ethos of what led me to co-found Jam Street Media, the pathos of my grandmother's imperative to me, and the logos of the book that caused my exodus from religion. Season 1 Episode 6 features an interview with Elizabeth Estrada ( commonly known as Eli) - a Mexican immigrant organizer based in the Bronx working on reproductive justice in New York City and State. In this episode we discuss fake clinics, also known as crisis pregnancy centers. We do a deep dive into how fake clinics are intentionally confusing and coercing people to give birth by creating barriers and detours, as well as providing misinformation to people who are looking to learn about and access abortion. Elizabeth Estrada Bio:Elizabeth Estrada serves as the New York Field and Advocacy Manager at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice. Previously, she served as the Civic Engagement Manager where she worked to raise the voices of Latinas nationally for policy change at all levels of government on issues that impact people's reproductive freedom and self-determination. Elizabeth immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 4, where she remained undocumented until age 13. She began as a Sexual and Reproductive Health “Promotora” for the Feminist Women's Health Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Elizabeth has had the honor of organizing hundreds of women on reproductive justice in her 10 years of grassroots organizing experience.References During the Episode:Reach out to Eli to get involved in the fight against fake clinics in The Bronx and throughout NY State email: newyork@latinainstitute.orgPro Truth New York: a coalition of reproductive health, rights, and justice advocates, policy makers, and service providers, united to fight fake abortion clinicsExpose Fake Clinics: a national initiative created to tell the truth about manipulative, fake reproductive health centersAdvocates for Youth: where Eli first shared her abortion story via their 1in3 campaign.Yo Te Apoyo: a campaign from Latina Institute to destigmatize abortion, and shift the culture to one of compassion and dignity.Renee Bracey Sherman: award winning reproductive justice activist and writer with expertise in public abortion storytelling and ending abortion stigmaLifting Latina Voices Initiative at the Feminist Women's Health Center in Atlanta, GALegislation for a research board to measure impact of fake clinics: NYS Assembly passed the LSPC Study Bill (A.8212) on 7/21. In today’s Federal Flash, we break down the education proposals in the Senate Republicans’ coronavirus relief package, known as the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection, and Schools (HEALS) Act, and cover the reaction to it. We also provide an update on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) new guidelines for reopening schools. Senate Republicans Introduce HEALS Act On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced the Senate GOP’s highly anticipated coronavirus aid package—the HEALS Act. As we discussed on last week’s Federal Flash, the $1 trillion bill includes $105 billion for education, including $70 billion for K–12 schools, $29 billion for colleges and universities, and $5 billion for governors. But unlike the earlier framework, which indicated that half of K–12 funding would be directed to schools with plans to physically reopen, the final bill reserves two-thirds of the relief fund for that purpose. In addition, the HEALS Act includes no dedicated funding for home internet access, which could exacerbate the homework gap as many districts plan to rely on remote learning. Last week, the Alliance for Excellent Education (All4Ed) and several partners released a report that finds that 16.9 million children lack the internet access necessary to support online learning and that students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, and those living in rural areas are much more likely to lack access to internet and devices. These students will continue to be caught in the homework gap without significant funding for connectivity. Like the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, states and districts would get HEALS Act relief based proportionally on how much they receive under Title I. However, only $23 billion would go directly to districts regardless of their fall reopening plans. For the remaining two-thirds of the $70 billion fund, governors would determine how much districts receive based on their plans to offer in-person instruction. Districts planning a hybrid approach, where at least half of students are in school at least half of the time, qualify for full funding. For districts that have some in-person instruction, but do not meet the 50 percent requirement, a reduced allocation would be provided, determined by each governor. Districts planning to offer virtual learning only would not be eligible for any funding from that two-thirds portion of the relief fund. The GOP bill also provides a carve out for private schools. Instead of an equitable services requirement, states must set aside money in proportion to the percentage of students enrolled in private schools. As a result, about 10 percent of the $70 billion would be reserved for private school students, but the exact percentage would differ from state to state. For example, if 12 percent of a state’s student population attend private schools, then 12 percent of that state’s grant must go to private schools. From the set-aside, schools would receive funds based on the relative number of low-income private school students they serve. However, governors would reduce per-student aid for private schools that do not meet criteria for reopening for in-person learning. Relatedly, the HEALS Act package authorizes—but does not provide funding for—emergency “education freedom” grants, an idea embraced by Senate Education Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. This program, if funded, would boost state tax credit scholarship programs that help families pay for private school tuition and related costs, including homeschooling. All signs point to the HEALS Act changing significantly in the coming weeks as the Senate and House head into negotiations, especially given the $2 trillion chasm between the HEALS Act and the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act passed by House Democrats in May.

Drug courts -- programs that seek to reduce drug use through mandated treatment and close judicial oversight -- sound like a good alternative to incarceration. In theory they are thought to save money and increase access to treatment but in practice they cherry-pick eligible participants and allow judges to preside over treatment decisions. Kerwin Kaye, Associate Professor of Sociology, American Studies, and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Wesleyan University, recently published a book entitled "Enforcing Freedom: Drug Courts, Therapeutic Communities, and the Intimacies of the State." He sat down with Deputy Director of DPA’s Department of Research and Academic Engagement Dr. Sheila P. Vakharia -- whose background in social work makes her no stranger to drug courts -- for a fascinating conversation that dove deep into his ethnographic research and the many issues with the drug court model. They discussed how drug court practices often discriminate against and penalize Black and poor users while insulating those who are white and more class privileged. Kaye’s insights are particularly timely, as we see increasing calls for decriminalization and alternatives to incarceration. Kerwin Kaye’s book is available through Columbia University Press. Its time for a jailbreak. In our second episode we discuss strategies with our NPC's and "formulate and execute a plan". Did you know quotation marks also help signify sarcasm. For the uninitiated this campaign starts in a prision at Velkynvelve in the Underdark. The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan decides to orchestrate his grand plan, engulfing all who inhabit the land with a demonic portal to eternal suffering. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. So check it out. The intent with this episode was to have a short, slick analysis of Christie v. NCAA, which is both about gambling and federalism, but things almost immediately devolved in talk about fried chicken, Joe Arpaio, Separation of Powers, and Brett's gambling conspiracy theories. It's not all nonsense by any means, but if you're hear just for New Jersey's terrible legal arguments, that starts at (25:36).
Commentary from the World’s Most Liveable City and how neo-con analysis overlooks the biggest issue. How does that sort of oversight effect Karl’s commuter polluter friends on the Cannonball run-like Calder freeway? Bid rent curves lead us to the cost of petrol pricing cycles, where Andrey Firsov (petrolspy.com.au/) joins to reveal his insights on the collusion at the micro level. US Senator Bernie Sanders also drops in to add his weight to this costly issue from the macro perspective. Show notes: http://www.earthsharing.org.au/1uZ

North Korea’s nuclear ambitions have persisted through the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations. Indeed, the North is expected to possess as many as 100 nuclear warheads by 2020. Pyongyang is also developing the missile capability to strike U.S. bases in the Pacific and someday even the American homeland. Virtually no one believes that the Kim regime will voluntarily relinquish its growing arsenal. Many American policymakers see China as the best means to pressure North Korea to change course. Yet Beijing so far has continued to underwrite the Kim regime. What must the United States and its allies do to convince Beijing to cut commerce with the North? Would such a course most likely result in reform in Pyongyang or a North Korean collapse? Could the latter be worse than the status quo?Join our panel for an open discussion of these and related questions, as they consider China’s role in confronting the “North Korea problem.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When I started my first degree at university, I knew I had to get myself a car. Until this point, a motorbike had served me well, but I was going to university in Manchester, England, 200 miles from my job and my girlfriend. I spotted an advert in the local paper from a local used car dealership offering a "Reliable, one careful owner, full service history, Austin 1100 in British Racing Green." It was old but almost in my price range. The dealer was friendly, kind and helpful. He took me out for a test drive and assured me that the car was an absolute bargain. He told me how thrilled he had been from the response to the advert and even forewarned me that someone else had called just before I arrived and they wanted to buy the car too. Does it matter whether I influence or persuade or manipulate, so long as I get the right result? Does it matter whether I influence or persuade or manipulate, so long as I get the right result? He shared a story about his own Austin 1100 that had been such a reliable little runner. Cheap to maintain and would quite happily trot up and down the motorway regularly. On top of that, it was cheap to insure and easy to get parts "should anything ever go wrong with it." I asked if he could knock a few quid off the price because I was a little short. He tried to get his boss to help, but there was sadly now way. I borrowed the difference from my best friend and I was thrilled to head off that very afternoon down south and was a little surprised as I hauled past Oxford and an orange light appeared on the dashboard. I borrowed the difference from my best friend and I was thrilled to head off that very afternoon down south and was a little surprised as I hauled past Oxford and an orange light appeared on the dashboard. I had bought a lemon. So why had I, an educated, not completely dim, and otherwise quite sensible person been duped into buying something? Are we influenced when we are duped? Yes we are. You'll remember from the Triangle of Influence that we are influenced when someone connects a desired result in such a way that the benefit outweighs our cost resulting in motivation. Influence is often considered to be a positive thing. But it has some closely related cousins known as: Persuasion Manipulation, and Coercion Persuasion is still considered OK, but to have been influenced rather than persuaded would be better. To have been forced or threatened into doing something is particularly unpleasant, while being manipulated to do the very same thing is regarded as wrong. How do I tell them apart? Sadly, we may not know until after the fact. Certainly the difference between influence, persuasion and manipulation can be very subtle. You could be using the exact same words to achieve the exact same result. The intent behind them, however is different. How do we influence? Beyond having real empathy with someone, there are four specific aspects of life we can use to influence or persuade anyone: Encourage their dreams Every single person I have ever met has dreams. They want to achieve something in their life, they may not know exactly what that is, but it is better than whatever they have achieved thus far in life. To influence someone you could encourage their dreams. That the benefit they will attain moves them towards their dreams Allay fears Everyone has fears. Most people will admit that they fear failure to some extent. Many people fear death. Does anybody like to be rejected? Some are afraid of flying. According to studies, more people fear public speaking than anything else. To influence someone to act you could allay their fears. That the benefit will be greater confidence for example, competence or simply the courage to act at all. You might also reduce the cost burden by allying someone's fears of undertaking the action you are proposing. Justify their failings We have all failed in our lives. Many of these failings we keep to ourselves through a false sense of pride, or worse that others will think badly of us if we admit them. Yet we all have them. Nobody likes to fail. It hurts. And isn’t it so good when our failure is not our fault? A powerful tool in the influencers arsenal is to have enough courage themselves to admit their own failings to others (you are not alone) and that there is a perfectly good reason (excuse) for failing. Help them throw rocks at their enemy There's nothing quite like a common enemy to unite people. And that enemy doesn't have to be other people. An "enemy" could be as simple as "dirty hair" - watch any shampoo advert. So what did that car dealer do to me? The car survived that first trip by the way. Although I couldn’t get her to go faster than 50mph. I pulled off the motorway and continued my journey south on the A roads. The following morning I called a mechanic from the local village near the hotel. Oh did he have a good laugh. It was all so amusing. How I had paid good, hard-earned money for a "total lemon". Gosh, how I enjoyed his joyful banter and bemused expression as he noted the growing list of necessary and expensive repairs. It would seem that I had been manipulated into buying the car. The dealer had deliberately and shrewdly given me misleading information about the benefits I would get from buying the car. He might not have lied when he had said "one careful owner", but he certainly could have told me that there had been several less than careful owners. Selling me that car was beneficial for him and not really for me. Does it matter whether I influence or persuade or manipulate, so long as I get the right result? Have you ever visited a shopping mall and spotted a badly behaved child lying on the floor beating their tiny little fists, and screaming that life is unfair? At that moment, that child is practicing their influence. Just being sweet, kind and alive didn’t trigger the desired reward. Perhaps asking nicely hadn't had the desired effect. Raising of the voice yielded no benefit. Sulking and crying to induce guilty feelings about parental control quickly evaporated as a waste of effort. Now, at the stage of 'bad-tempered meltdown', the child is recruiting the assistance of social pressure as an outside force and potential threat to the parent's standing in the community. After all, which parent hasn’t felt the pressure to give in just to stop those looks? After all, which parent hasn’t felt the pressure to give in just to stop those looks? When we influence someone, we do so unwittingly. We have power to cause changes without directly forcing them to happen. When we deliberately act to cause someone to change, we begin persuading them to do so. If we are being shrewd or devious and the benefit is largely in our own favour, then we are said to be manipulating someone. And if we threaten or are forceful, we begin to coerce the other person. For most people, the process of moving from one to another is simply an escalation of force to achieve a desired result. Surely the end justifies the means, right? It's an argument that the tobacco companies use to this day. It's really a question of who benefits and at what cost? As we move from influence, to persuasion, to manipulation to coercion, the amount of effort on the part of the influencer increase. The benefit gained over the cost for the influenced decreases and thus, any change becomes less sustainable. As soon as the influencer neglects to mention certain costs, or exaggerates the benefits - then they have shifted to manipulation. Is it right to do so? Only you can be your judge. Michael Huemer, a professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder and author of The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey, explains the fallacies of the Hobbesian argument for government and discusses the problems of democracy.
Professor Michael Huemer claims that if normal people acted like governments do, we would generally be horrified and find their behavior morally contemptible…so why do most people intuitively feel that government is justified in its actions? Professor Huemer, Aaron, and Trevor tackle problems of political obligation, political legitimacy, and political authority, and explain the differences between each of these terms.Show Notes and Further ReadingMichael Huemer, The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey (book)Michael Huemer, Ethical Intuitionism (book)Prof. Huemer’s personal web site. Michael Huemer, professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder, discusses his book The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey.
The philosopher Robert Nozick once claimed that the most basic question of Political Philosophy is “Why not Anarchy?” Political philosophers pose this question often with the intent of demonstrating that there is indeed a good philosophical reason why governments should exist. Indeed, we often simply take for granted that the state and its vast coercive apparatus is morally justified. Similarly, we tend to think that anarchy is both a practically untenable and morally undesirable mode of social association. But governments claim not only power but authority over their citizens. And a few moments of reflection on the idea of authority suffices to see how curious an idea it is. To have authority is to have a right to create moral obligations in others simply by issuing commands, and a corresponding right to coerce compliance when others fail to obey one’s commands. It seems a puzzling phenomenon: The government claim to be able to make it the case that you’re morally required to do something simply in virtue of the fact that it has told you to do it. And they claim the moral right to imprison you for failing to do what they say. In The Problem of Political Authority: An Examination of the Right to Coerce and the Duty to Obey(Palgrave Macmillan 2013), Michael Huemer explores this puzzling phenomenon, and defends the conclusion that in fact there is no such thing as political authority. Often salespeople think they have to convince prospect to buy their services, and they won't let up until they finally say yes and they get their money. That is not how you develop longtime clients that sustain your business over the years. You want to influence them: ask questions, make recommendations, and take them on an emotional journey where they see how their lives will be better if they work with you, says RAIN Group co-president John Doerr.
