Rules. The important part of a game. They are actually the game. But are you like me, fed up of reading them over and over because you have forgotten them or they are too complex or because you haven’t played the game in a while (that's more me)? So we are now going to babble about rules. Should they be complex? Should they be standardised? Should they all be made so the players can jump right in? It was panic stations - everyone for themselves. Even though we had arrived on the island in groups, all of that went out of the window. If you saw a boat, you did all you could to get on it and sail away from the island. There was no time. Bit by bit, the island was sinking. Some poor souls jumped into the water in a desperate attempt to swim to the mainland, but they had to contend with sharks and sea monsters. Nowhere was really safe. It's episode 156 - and you now have the option to terminate and be cremated on the premises... In Escape from New York (1981), New York City has been turned into a prison, with giant walls keeping prisoners locked inside. Anyone who goes in may never come out, and the city is run by criminals - which is bad news for the US President, who has become stranded in the city - and for Snake Plissken, the disgraced Special Ops soldier sent in to save him. We talk about sane approaches to data protection; the benefits of open sharing of information; and (of course) the correct way to structure any effective team. Whatever happens, one things for sure: We, the soldiers of The National Liberation Front of America, in the name of the workers and all the oppressed of this imperialist country, have struck a fatal blow to the fascist police state. Another classic film solved by the best movie podcast in the world. Next week, another John Carpenter classic, with They Live (1988). Get in touch! 00:12 - How to make homemade mud (with Milliput, for Burrows & Badgers miniatures). 03:26 - Things get Napoleonic with Sails of Glory from Ares Games. 17:06 - Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the sixth outing for the film series. Weirdly put together, apparently, but still great, it turns out. 25:31 - Our fantasy football league is going well, but weirdly, so here's a Game Week 1 update. 31:01 - Dan's gone and bought his first graphic novel, which is The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins. 36:35 - Kris and Sam have been on their holidays and they will not shut up about it. 48:09 - Great holiday games? Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, Cobra Paw, Carcassonne, and The Mind, so sayeth Kris and Sam. 51:29 - The Exit: The Game series is great, we've said as much on previous episodes, but Sam's just taken on The Sunken Treasure and Dead Man on the Orient Express, and they come thoroughly recommended. 53:32 - Barbie Horse Adventures or Britney's Dance Beat? That's the question you've asked us, and by gosh that's the question we're going to answer. Got another one for us? Mail us on stayinginpod@gmail.com or DM us on Twitter or Facebook. All that, plus interspersed sounds of tea being brewed, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) in a somewhat topsy-turvy episode of our silly little podcast. This week we are talking about Cult of the New ... to me. Inspired by a recent blog post by Dave Roy, https://dudetakeyourturnblog.wordpress.com/2017/09/08/cult-of-the-new-to-me/, we discuss how it a game doesn't necessarily have to be the latest hotness to get our interest, rather it just has to be new to us. As always we also discuss what we played in the week including Survive Escape from Atlantis, Incan Gold, Blank and Harry Potter Clue(do). Check out our website Boardgamesinbed.com for links to all our social media to hear more from us in the week. We also belong to the inside voices network so check out insidevoicesnetwork.com for more great board gaming podcasts!
There's no worries under the sea. It's just singing clams and dancing jellyfish as far as the eye can see. That's what I thought before today, at least. On the podcast this week I found out that the sea is actually a dangerous place, full of sharks, disappearing islands and sumbarines with only a limited oxygen supply. Featuring two our favourites, Deep Sea Adventure and Survive! Escape from Atlantis, this nautical episode will have you wetter than Flounder's face-body. It is a well known fact the board game world is full of pretty amazing people. Resilient, creative, clever, friendly… Quite frankly it’s a joy to behold. Of course sometimes you find the odd weirdo who is not pleasant and who you’ll try to avoid for the rest of your life. Stephen Buonocore couldn’t be further from that sort of people. He is one of the most approachable, genuine, clever and shrewd people the gaming world has ever seen. Yes, I’m sure you know people who are just as awesome as Stephen, but what would make Stephen the winner is that he would probably agree with you. He is also humble. But he’s mostly clever. Clever enough to make an incredible success story out of Stronghold Games. The company that started by bringing Survive: Escape from Atlantis back from gaming obscurity to turn it into a game everyone should have on their shelves, continued by getting out quality game after quality game that other companies wouldn’t touch for being too risky. With a plethora of games being launched at Spiel and soon after being sold in the USA, Stephen also has been one of the small companies who realised the potential of the European market and sets sail to Germany every year. A lot of companies should pay attention to him! And so should you! So please step into the Boardgame Interview Room, take a seat and have a good listen. You’ll learn a lot!
