Two farmers are trying out a system called Bokashi which the Soil Association hopes may lead to improvements in the soil while also being a little kinder to the environment. Rachel spoke to farmer Andrew Barbour at Glen Fincastle and Field Lab Co-ordinator Audrey Litterick who explained what this process actually involves.Producer Phil met up with Ada Campbell, chair of Langass Community Woodland Trust to have a walk round one of the few forested areas on north Uist and hear the story of Hercules the bear.Rachel recently bumped into an artist in Aberdeenshire who was on her way to a farm to collect a fleece for one of her new collections. Lucy MacDonald who is also a weaver likes to use local materials including wool and plants to make her work sustainable, traceable and authentic. Rachel joined her as she visited Diana Milligan and Cobweb – one of Diana's rather interesting looking Ryeland Sheep. The Isle of Rum has been designated as Scotland's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary by DarkSky International. The designation recognises the efforts of the community to protect and promote the island's starry skies and nocturnal environment. Isle of Rum Community Trust Director Fliss Fraser joins Mark and Rachel live to tell them more about Rum's dark skies and the benefits the nocturnal environment brings to us and to the natural world. The forest trails near Aberfoyle in the Trossachs have become increasingly popular in recent years for mountain bikers and gravel riders keen to get away from busy roads. The waymarked trails, in the shadow of Ben Lomond, have been named Gravelfoyle. Now, in a bid to attract more people to them a pilot called Parkride has been taking place; a bit like Parkrun but replacing running with biking. Alongside it parents can drop off their kids at ‘Bairns On Bikes' where professional coaches teach youngsters basic and more advanced bike skills. Linda Sinclair went along to find out more.Claudia Zeiske is a long distance walker and she has been walking from mountain to sea across Aberdeenshire. Mark met up with Claudia at the end of her journey at a place called Gadle Braes in Peterhead in what was a very blustery day to find out why exactly she had undertaken the walk Lucy MacDonald's an artist who uses local fleeces and plants in her work. After she's sorted through the fleece and given it a wash, she will put it through a carding machine before spinning it and weaving it. Rachel watched her in action at her studio in Aberdeen.

In the olden days, the meal was served in two stages. First, they would eat the main course with bread; afterwards, the table with the bread was removed, and a new table with desert was brought. Maran, in Siman 177, rules that this "Siluk Hashulhan"-removal of the table- constitutes a "meal within a meal." Therefore, not only must new Berachot be recited before eating the desert, but also after the dessert as well. That is, after the desert, a Beracha Aharona is recited on the dessert and then Birkat Hamazon is recited on the main meal. However, Maran continues, nowadays that we do not bring a new table for dessert, it is considered one long meal. Therefore, a Beracha is made before dessert, but the Birkat Hamazon at the end covers the dessert, and no separate Beracha Aharona is necessary. The Nahar Misrayim (R. Rephael Aharon Ben Shimon, Egypt, 1848-1928) writes a Chidush that the Halacha of "Siluk Hashulhan" can also apply nowadays. While removing the table is not the standard practice, nevertheless, people sometimes do remove the tablecloth before dessert. This also constitutes "Siluk Hashulhan," and the dessert would require a separate Beracha Aharona before Birkat Hamazon. The Hesed L'Alaphim (R. Eliezer Papo, 1725-1826) adds that placing bread on the table, after removing the tablecloth, does not help. The act of removing the tablecloth indicates a person's "Da'at"-intent to end the previous stage of the meal.In light of these opinions, one must be careful in such a situation, as he may be required to make a separate Beracha Aharona. This issue could be the explanation for an interesting Halacha brought by the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), which many Poskim have tried to explain. The Ben Ish Hai states that one should eat a little bread right before Birkat Hamazon. Perhaps, this practice is meant to alleviate this problem. Eating bread at the end of the meal demonstrates that even if the tablecloth was removed, the meal is one uninterrupted entity. Hacham Ovadia rules that if one does not follow this custom of the Ben Ish Hai, he must make a separate Beracha Aharona on the desert, if the tablecloth was removed. SUMMARYIf one removed the tablecloth at the end of a meal and then served desert, a separate Beracha Aharona must be recited on the desert before the Birkat Hamazon.

Stampede Digital Systems and the Know Like Trust podcast presents: Paul Meijer: The White Tablecloth Have you ever found a really great mechanic shop? You know, the one where you send your whole family too because you trust them so much? Today's guest has a mind for systems. As a mechanic he could see how all the automobiles systems worked together. This talent, it turns out, can scale. So seeing how systems work, is a powerful gift, not just in a car, but in the shop itself and the people who come there and work there. And not just in a mechanic shop but on a car lot and in a dealership and in systems of dealerships. If you can see how it all works together you can find the areas to improve. Introducing Paul Meijer: From mechanic to shop foreman, service manager to store manager, Paul learned the business from the ground up. He embraced customer service as his keystone to success early on. With “no job is complete until the customer is completely satisfied” as his mantra, Paul led his Midas shop to the top 15% nationally. Paul continued to grow his career in service and then in sales, where he held high rankings as a sales professional and has led Internet sales departments. Today, Paul is a highly respected automotive industry advisor and trainer and speaker. He is an avid contributor on Linkedin and hosts a Linkedin Live weekly show where he shares tips and best practices with industry professionals. Listen to his story and just like us, here at Stampede, you will come to know, like, and trust him. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies

On today’s Green Gab, my guest is Kathy Curran. Kathy has been on an amazing journey to incrementally green her life, and now that the holidays are upon us, greening her gift-giving is her first order of business. Sustainable Choices It’s really important to understand where what you buy comes from. Most of us don’t need more stuff. Our homes are already packed to the gills with stuff we don’t need or use. So, as you buy gifts for others, it’s important to make sure that you understand where the products you are buying are coming from. If items have to travel a long way to reach you, that’s not sustainable. If the company you are buying from employs child labor, well, that’s not what you want to endorse. If the company that you are purchasing products from has a record of environmental violations, that’s also not a green choice. When it doubt, look for companies that have achieved B Corporation status. B stands for “benefit”. So they are companies that exist to benefit mankind, not just to solely turn a profit. It’s not just what you buy, but who you are buying it from and where is it coming from that should play into our gift choices. Local and Organic are Pretty Safe Choices We have found some really unique gifts that allow us to make good environmental choices by shopping at local food purveyors. Staying regional with your purchases reduces the carbon footprint of your purchase. Many local food purveyors also have minimal packaging, and many of their products will be all-natural, organic, and made from sustainable crops. They also generally are not packed with the chemicals and preservatives that factory foods have. Many green gift choices also support your local community and the business owners that serve your local community. Green gifts keep dollars working within your communities. Give Experiences and not Stuff We all have that person on our list who is impossible to shop for. They already have everything, don’t need anything, and yet, you still need to give them a gift. The best types of gifts for people like this is to focus on giving experiences, rather than stuff. Some of our favorite experiences to give are: Local classes of workshops pertaining to a hobby - gardening, cooking, painting, writing, pottery, etc. Tickets to a favorite play or concert Yearly family passes to the State Parks in your state or a state nearby Memberships to a museum or local attraction Online memberships to heirloom seed clubs or other clubs that support hobbyists Gift certificates for Air BnB A tour of a local attraction that they’ve never been to Give apps like Story Corp to document family history and stories Green Your Gift Wrapping Gift wrap and all the packaging that goes into giving gifts is a huge source of waste. The more gifts you give, the more important it is for you to make greener choices with your gift wrap.  Some of our favorite ways to make gift wrapping greener are: Wrap in fabrics, not paper Use old maps, newspapers as gift wrap Buy recycled brown paper to as wrapping paper Save gift bags for re-use. Buy recycled wrapping paper. Recycle your wrapping paper. Use mason jars, buckets, clay pots or other items that go with a gift to “wrap” it.   Simplify, Don’t Accumulate One of the biggest gifts we can leave our children is to simplify your life and unburden yourself of all the stuff. They won’t want most of it and it only creates more work and waste to deal with generations of the stuff that we have in our lives. The next generation doesn’t want to drag Grandma’s china to their 6 apartments in 3 cities before they get married and settle into a tiny house! So, instead of leaving a ton of stuff, we thing it’s a great idea to identify one special heirloom piece - a teacup, painting, letter, etc. that you want to be meaningful to that child. Then write out the heritage of that item and why it was special to you or Grandma, or Uncle Bob, and give them the one thing they can cherish, along with the documentation of the sentimental value to your family. It’s much more likely to be cherished and displayed with care, than an 88 piece set of china that no one has room to store and will never get used.   Resources Mentioned: Story Corp App  StoryWorth White LED Lights Colored LED Lights   Gifts for Friends Unique Journal with Laser-cut cover Food Wraps – for lunches and food storage Tablecloth – made entirely of recycled bottles Joy Essential Oil Metal Straws

"I was aware of the culture I grew up in, but I was unaware of the cost for other people, and also unaware of the cost for me. I think when you are raised in a culture like that you have definitions for yourself that feel very comfortable and safe and you’re not even really aware of that. And so you start thinking, why am I telling myself these things? Why is that true? Why does that have to be true? It started seeming like an impoverished narrative. Or like a small narrative that I wanted to step outside of. I feel like every time I step outside of a story I’m telling about myself I see another story. It just feels like that right now, and I’m trying to keep honoring that. So this show is really about that girl, me, and the woman I am, and trying to step into that and keep stepping into it." Elizabeth's artist statement about "Deconstructing Nostalgia" This work began with my exploring the reluctance among women in the deep South to perceive patriarchal and racial structures. I remember myself as a little girl in Mississippi covered head to toe in lace, anticipating being fussed over, wanting to be the object. It sets up an early feeling of being doll-like and not owning one's body. And it sets up a very pleasurable, safe existence that rewards not questioning the system. I am interested in the way I have maintained my investment in this system—partly out of the privilege of not having to be aware of it and partly out of a conflictual relationship to beauty--beauty as emotional safety. I started thinking about lace as a metaphor for this experience, the obfuscation of ugliness--a representation of the gentility and graciousness of the South made possible largely by a history of graceless and dark systems. This obfuscation is highly effective in maintaining the status quo of both the oppressed and the idealized. This work is also about the portrait and my identification as a figurative painter from the South, an identity I find both rewarding and problematic. The Southern portrait is often a signifier, a status symbol, a decorative object, or a kind of pre-Instagram posting. I am using neon (unraveling and lit) and plexiglass (crystallized and glowing) as "lace"--neither bonnet nor halo, but playing with both. I made large ruffled "pillow" paintings and stuffed figures--fringed or in altar-like configurations with mirrored plexiglass and glitter clouds, re-interpreting the "trophy" room, woman as trophy, a type of padded cell of Southern culture, church altar. I am attempting to have a conversation with this girl I was and am, partly a confession, partly a blessing. I am also trying to expand the portrait beyond the confines of ego and decorative object, challenging the culture of gentility and nostalgia which is rooted in and particular to the South, but whose questions of privilege and beauty as both safety and entrapment are universal. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/4/41335247-836c-4f4a-8a8b-aeca55f3227a/zhLptRk2.png Still Explosions acrylic on canvas, 72 x 48 inches, 2018 Current/recent exhibitions Elizabeth Chapin: Deconstructing Nostalgia March 2-31, 2019 Wally Workman Gallery 1202 West 6th Street Austin, Texas 78703 512.472.7428 Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Sunday 12pm to 4pm. Chapin’s large scale works reference her Southern upbringing and the conflicted nostalgia surrounding the gentility and graciousness of the South. Chapin views much of this culture as made possible largely by graceless and dark systems. This obfuscation of ugliness and the worship of appearance is the theme that runs throughout her new body of work. Using the idea of lace as a metaphor for this experience and referencing historical religious painting, she explores beauty as safety for both the oppressed and the worshiped and idealized. Halos of fabric, acrylic and neon surround Chapin’s paintings. Some of the pieces are stuffed like giant decorative pillows, epitomizing the comfort of beauty as well as referencing the trophy room. With these works, Chapin has exposed Southern portraiture as a pre-Instagram status symbol and examines the pleasure and willful ignorance derived within it. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies

Today, we are gabbing with Kathy Curran, who works with us, and we are talking about the joy of greener gift giving during this season of giving. Kathy was inspired by her adult daughter, who is focused on being green at home since starting her own family. At the holidays last year, her daughter asked for “no stuff,” but you have to open presents at the holidays, right? So Kathy started considering how to change the way they do the holidays and created an opportunity for greener gift giving. Greener Gift Giving = Rethinking When considering how to reduce your impact when it comes to gifts, it really comes down to shifting your thinking. Many people are past the idea that stuff matters; instead, they want experiences. Some ideas of experiences include: Annual membership to the national parks or area museums. Season tickets to the local theatre. Gift certificate to AirBnB. Keep Local If stuff is important to the people on your list, you can keep it local. When you shop locally, more money is kept local. On average, 48% of what you spend locally stays within the community, as compared to 14% of purchases as chain stores. Local consignment and secondhand stores tick off two boxes: keeping money local and recycling goods. Look to the Internet In a pinch for greener gift giving? Try an ebook or audio book. There’s no need for anything to be shipped, and you’re still providing a type of experience. And if you’re not sure what the gift receiver would prefer, a gift card allows them to choose the perfect book. Make Greener Gift Giving at Home Everyone appreciates handmade gifts. Whether it’s your favorite cookie recipe or a hand-knitted sweater, something that is made with love is warmly received. Not personally talented? Gather favorite family recipes or record an older family member’s stories for the next generation. You’ll combine greener gift giving with legacy, and that’s always a perfect fit. Can you be an effective CTO without coding? You can and the man to prove it is here for today’s show, Kelly Abbott. Kelly has held a variety of roles in the tech sector, including his current position of CTO of Tablecloth. Today we’ll talk about what career decisions led him to that role, why he suggested we work together the first time we met and whether or not we actually did! You’ll also hear what it’s like to be a non-coding CTO and what he has learned from letting go of business ideas that weren’t working. It’s all part of today’s CTO Studio. In this episode you’ll hear: What was a painful yet important lesson Kelly learned from a VC? Why does one idea work and another does not? What would he do differently if he were starting over with Great Jones Street? What is the complexity paradox? Do CTOs always need bigger teams? And so much more!  Our conversation begins with talking about Kelly’s first few endeavors. They include a social biography network, a project we did together and Realtidbits, a data analytics venture in the commenting space he created, grew and later sold. From there he created the Netflix of short stories: Great Jones Street. He comes from a family of writers. His dad is an accomplished short fiction writer who has taught fiction writing throughout Kelly's life. His mom owned a children's bookstore and so books were the center of their lives.  As an adult he was addicted to reading fiction on his phone. He thought he and others would be best served by bringing short fiction because it's so difficult to read a novel on a phone. He traveled a lot and didn't want to bring books with him, and he didn't like Kindles because he thought it was just an extra piece of hardware to carry around. He couldn't find a resource for buying short stories and adding them to his phone, so he thought there was a Netflix model possibility. If he could acquire really good content and offer them to a user base for a nominal monthly fee the idea could become a sustainable business model. So Kelly went out and bought a lot of really good stories, made great artwork for them along with audio versions of the stories read by the authors themselves. But despite his best efforts, people didn’t download the app and they never gained traction. As a result, they are in the process of shutting down the app now while the content is still available online. Never one to be slowed by adversity, Kelly started a new project called Tablecloth. Today Kelly is the CTO of that company. At Tablecloth, they provide technology services to help non-profits, their funders and their corporate partners determine the impact on society from the non-profits efforts and funding. Tablecloth also reports on that impact, something that is typically part of the information non-profits have to supply to their funders and corporate partners after receiving funding. Typically this information is not well-organized and can even be messy, so Tablecloth created a better way. It combines the many streams of impact-tracking data these organizations create and streamlines this data into a single dashboard that can be used by a foundation. As they've evolved, the biggest pain point is to provide better communication tools between the different entitites. So today they have tools that look like Survey Monkey, databases and the reporting dashboard shows data visualization and business intelligence on top of layers of data. But it gets reported like a Facebook stream: one day you'll see a video showing what the organization has done with the funding provided, another day you'll see charts of data. So the funders are getting a steady stream of information and input, and not having to wait until the end of the year. Today he explains how non-profits work with Tablecloth, even when they aren't tech savvy. He also tells us the future of Tablecloth, and how he is building his team going forward. Join us for that and more on today’s CTO Studio!

节目组:The Screen Age 荧屏时代 节目名称:Amelie 天使爱美丽开头曲 East of Eden引语 M: Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Screen Age. This is your old friend Mico.L: This is a freshman, Lynn. Hi!M: I think everyone has watched lots of films, and there must be a favorite one in our heart.L: Yes. Today we're going to introduce a film which has the greatest significance in French film history called Amelie.M: Now,it's time for the quiz show. As the winter holiday is just around the corner. What do you friends want to do? Please send your plans to our wechat. 马上就要到寒假了,假期你们有什么计划呢?请发送你的计划至微信平台。 Ok, that's it. Let's get to today's programme. 插曲1 La Valse D'Amelie PART 1: F: I believe the name of the film is familiar to the most of us. And now, let's get to the story line with our introduction.B:A French girl, Amelie did never feel the warmness of her family. When she was examined by her unfamiliar father, she was a little bit excited .So he thought she had heart trouble. I:So Amelie was deprived the right of playing with the peers. Her mother prayed every day for a son, but she was killed by a tourist who leaped to her own death. Because of this, her father got the infantile autism. In this sad home, the goldfish in the tank even tried to commit suicide itself.A: However, Amelie was not depressed by this. After she grew up, she became a waitress in a coffee bar. Everything started in a summer, 1997. Unfortunately, Diana princess was killed by a car accident. This made Amelie knew the frangibility and shortness of our life. L:So she decided to affect everyone around her with her help. She did bring happiness to them. The cool grocery store boss, the teased mate, the sad doorkeeper were really changed by her little means and tricks. Unexpectedly, these were not useful to a strange man. She thought that he was her Mr. Right. Finally, all shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill. 插曲 2 L'autre Valse D'amelie PART 2: Y:The director of the film, Jean-Pierre Jeunet said: “I hate the color of wide variety .Choosing the representative color will produce a brilliant result. Hence, he used a pure and high saturation color to build the sprightly fairytales atmosphere. It'll definitely catch our eyes.I:Yep. What deserves to be mentioned the most is a French humor in the film. When Amelie wanted to give some coins to a cadger in the subway as usual. The cadger showed tender care for his dog and said: “No, thanks. I don’t go to work at the weekend.” This is really funny.F:The French humor involves an intelligence, satire, exaggeration and so on. Film comes from the life. And this film won a lot of prizes, including 5 academy awards. 插曲3 Bitter Heart PART 3: M: Some people think this film is a little bit realistic. At the beginning, it uses liking something and disliking something to introduce someone. Like the feeling of putting hands into a bean bag, using the soup spoon to tap the creme brulee lightly.L: Everyone does have some strange hobbies. For myself, I love the sound when I trample the fallen leaves in fall. Maybe these lovely details are the essential points which make this film successful.B: Without you, who should I admire all the beautiful things with? This film appeals us to be optimistic to help everyone around us. It's full of positive energy. 插曲 4 Everybody PART 4: Y:As time is flying by, it's time to be over. Finally, let's use the novel beginning and ending of the Amelie to finish today's theme.F:On October 12,1969.18:28:32 pm. A flying which wings could vibrate 14670 times in a minute stopped on the road. Tablecloth and wine glasses were blown by the wind. An old man deleted a dead friend from his contacts.Y: On December 28, 1997.At the amusement park. Anyone even the nuns had great changes; Amelie and her lover were included. They laughed on the motorcycle. The temperature is 20℃. The humidity is 70%. The air pressure is 9999.F:最后感谢制作张安康。Don't forget our question.See you again.Y:Bye. 结束曲 Mr Kill 节目监制:刘逸超编辑:李梓彤播音:赛碧乐 杨旸 李梓彤 邹佳琳 赵艺薇 杨晨丹 毕鑫屹制作:张安康
