Taipei is an amazing blend of Chinese & Japanese cultures, with a proud democratic culture and amaaaazing food. We're posted up in Ximen district of Taipei (not to be confused with NEW Taipei City) and are immediately blown away by how comfortable & clean the city is. It's so cool to get a view of the history of Taiwan outside of the official international narrative, visiting the monument of Chiang Kai-shek, and enjoying dim-sum with our fantastic AirBnB host Brad (who fortuitously also has a degree in cuisine from Paris and runs his own tour company in Taipei ;). This is shaping up to be an amazing and unexpected experience. Ni hao Taiwan!

Welcome to Start By Listening! We are excited to have you on this journey with us toward healing and transformation.  Start By Listening is a podcast about sexual harm, trauma and advocacy.  Season Three - Hodge Podge - We are taking SBL to the community and speaking with various groups and people on the traumas they encounter in their part of the community and asking how they may want their organization to address trauma survivors in the future. This season, we will be delivering exceptional conversations and creative ideas while creating a safe space for connection and thoughtful experiences. We are going beyond sexual harm and really asking, "What does trauma look like and what does this experience look like for the Western Kentucky communities we serve?" We will be talking with various community members, and delving into difficult conversations where trauma intersects our communities and people. Season Three finds us growing and changing how we do our work. Our goal is to drop 2-3 podcasts per month on Fridays and you will find most of our episodes on YouTube as well! Yes, New Beginnings has a YouTube channel. In this episode, New Beginnings podcasters Jennifer, The Friendly Therapist, and Shelby, Victim Advocate have a very authentic conversation with Dr. Jim Tidwell - VP of Population Health at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. I worked with Dr. Tidwell when I was the RN Case Manager for the ICU and I found him to be one of the kindest, compassionate and most amazing humans I have ever had the honor to work with. His dedication and commitment to patients, their care and recovery is the best I have ever witnessed. I think you will find him to be articulate, thoughtful and in touch with the needs of our community.Dr. Tidwell grew up in Utah, though he lived in Central America for 4 years as a boy. As a young man he served a two-year mission in Argentina for The Church of Jesus Christ. He graduated from Brigham Young University then moved to Houston Texas for four years where he went to Baylor College of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Tidwell trained for 6 years in Temple, Texas to become a Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon. He then completed an additional 18 months of fellowship training in Microsurgery in Las Vegas Nevada, Ghent Belgium and Taipei Taiwan. When his training was complete, he returned to Texas where he practiced and served as an Assistant Professor in a residency training program. He joined Owensboro Health in 2015 when he was recruited to help start the OH Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Program. He speaks fluent Spanish and returned to Guatemala each year to serve a week-long medical mission performing cleft-lip and cleft-palate surgeries. He remains a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, though a spinal cord injury in 2018 left him unable to operate. While he maintains a presence in the clinic, now his primary role at Owensboro Health is as Vice President of Population Health. He oversees Owensboro Health's efforts outside the walls of its hospitals and clinics, to improve the health of the communities that it serves. Before becoming paralyzed, Dr. Tidwell's favorite hobbies were to camp, hike and travel with his family. Jim and his wife, Jennie, have been married for 24 years and have three teenage children who keep life busy and fun. He is still adjusting to life in a wheelchair and all else that comes with being quadriplegic. He remains devoted in his faith and sincere in his desire to serve others.YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE. Remember to subscribe to our Podcast - Start By Listening - found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer and more! You can find this episode on YouTube today!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VewBOVXzr64Also subscribe to our New Beginnings YouTube channel!! - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxT9OQkPpCPSAgcUhhqUkmQStart By Listening will drop on Fridays, 2-3x monthly, bringing you an interesting and intriguing look into the work we do, while educating about trauma and healing. If you would like to reach out and contact Jennifer or Shelby, please email at SBL@nbowensboro.org. Finally, a few shout outs. If you liked our jingle jingle, hop on over to www.uriahwilde.com and talk with Seth Hedges. He created the beautiful music for our podcast. Thank you SETH! Another special thank you to Rodney Newton, he helped us learn how to put this Podcast together and create a beautiful thing. Thank you RODNEY!!!To find local resources for sexual abuse please visit www.RAINN.org or call the National Sexual Assault Hotline: 1-800-656-4673, 24/7/365

In my sponsorship lineage, we work the Traditions after the Steps. Based on what others have taught me and what I have experienced, I put together the following handout in which I try to boil down each Tradition to a word for phrase that best expresses the principle it represents followed by inventory questions to guide my application of the Tradition. As an addict, I need clear instructions or I am capable of not being able to discern the difference between “I thought about it” and “I took action.”

Food writer and chef Ching He Huang tries to tempt Shaun to the bustling city of Taipei. Will the promise of stunning skyscrapers, extraordinary museums and delicious food be enough to get Shaun off his sofa and all the way to the island of Taiwan? Your Place Or Mine is the travel podcast that isn't going anywhere - not until guests can convince Shaun Keaveny it's worth getting off the sofa for. Each week a familiar face will try to persuade Shaun and resident geographer, historian and comedian Iszi Lawrence that jetting off to their favourite destination is worth the hassle. Across the series listeners will be able to figuratively globe-trot to a new destination, as guests share a personal guide to their favourite place on the planet. Iszi will be on hand to check out the facts during the podcast's metaphorical tour of its visitors' much-loved locations. With all the missed travel these past two years, Your Place Or Mine will explore whether getting back on a plane is too much for our wallets and limited carbon budgets, or if seeing the world and experiencing global cultures is something we can't afford to miss. Your Place or Mine is a BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. Producers: Proinsias O'Coinn and Jen Whyntie

Russell is one of the most interesting characters I've interviewed. Sometimes painfully self-aware, the discussion gives you a good idea of the nuanced world of yoga in utter technicolour honesty as Russell is well known for now as co-host of the Finding Harmony Podcast with his wife Harmony Slater. Russell was one of the fairly old batch of student who studied directly with Pattabhi Jois. We chat about the yoga scene back then, amongst other things as well as his own evolution as a student and a man. We discuss his practice now as he deals with the results of pushing his body too hard over the years. Russell has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga yoga for more than 25 years. He is a humble and refined teacher, he was given Authorization by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 2005. Case is known for his joking spirit, and his perpetual eye toward social justice work. When Pattabhi Jois invited him to his pranayama class in 2007, he considered this distinction to be the highest grade.  Russell has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga in the Mysore Method since 2001. He has taught programs in NYC, Brighton - England, Taipei - Taiwan, San Francisco, and was Director of the Ashtanga Yoga Mysore program at Stanford University for nine years. He worked as the Director of Partnerships for the Pure Edge Foundation, a non-profit company that brings yoga-based exercises and mindfulness programs into schools throughout the USA. Russell is known for his creative delivery of experiential presentations on neuroscience for social and emotional learning. Russell Case brings to life the teachings of yoga and mindfulness in a very colorful and scientific way that makes it easy for students to understand the deeper dimensions of why yoga works and how. He - a professional football coach and the founder of Football Club Vikings based in Taipei Taiwan.  This year 2021 is the 10th year of his football club.  150 football players are now on the fundraising campaign which aims to keep on the operation of the club.  More importantly they need the fund to make the trips abroad for the international games.  For every young football player around the world, one of the highlights is the annual trips heading across the borders for the opportunity to test their skills against the international oppositions and to win the games and sometimes to lose and learn from it.  The Vikings do the same.  In their map, they have challenged Cambodia, China, Japan and most frequent Denmark.  Year 2013 - 2019, the team participated every year the Brøndby Cup Denmark, a major international youth tournament.  Behind all these, there is the man with the passion and the will to devote to the football.  Johnni Nielsen his first touch with the football was with his father.  Like the other danish boys, 3-month old already has the ball.  When he can walk, his father took him to the garden and started to play on.  Until his knee got injured at 19.  By then he already had the couching license and regularly trained his teammates.  Year 2009 he took all his couching stuff and football gear and everything donated when he moved to Taiwan with his taiwanese wife and the kids.  Gradually the danish childhood came to his mind, he wanted to do the same as his father.  He took his son to the school next to where they live and started to play on.  The first couple weeks, they were two people, the next couple weeks, they had 3-4, to the end they have enough for a football team.  So they have 20-25 kids in the end in a year.  That's FC Vikings started.  10 years passed these teens, hanging around on street corners, grew up in the minor families, now are studying in the universities.  They are still the Vikings and they make the couch Johnni Nielsen smile.F.C. José saw it twice; the first time finding it interesting but almost instantly forgettable; the second time it incensed him, seeming an attempt to get a production to pay for a director's networking opportunities rather than a work that actually illuminates what Taiwan New Cinema might be; its history, contexts, development. We do get to see it's impact on major names from East Asia. Richard is as always the voice of reason.

This is the last podcast episode I am recording before the end of this crazy, intense, and just straight out tough year that 2020 turned out to be. So I just wanted to say thank you to the guests of all 26 episodes I've recorded so far. I really appreciate that you set aside some of your precious time to talk with me, sometimes during quite stressful moments. This was especially the case for the episodes I recorded early on in the pandemic, when there was so much more uncertainty than there is now. I also wanted to say thank you to all you listeners. On the day I am publishing this episode (December 22nd), we are approaching no less than 6,000 plays! It's been an amazing journey and I've learned so much. Recording these podcast episodes has turned out to be the second best thing to meeting people at international book fairs, which I do hope we can go back to again very soon in the New Year as I miss seeing you all... Now, on to today's episode, on which I'm joined by Rubén Padilla of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, also known as the FIL. This book fair was one of the last, if not the last of the year and as many events that took place this year, it went fully digital. I was curious to hear Rubén's impressions and experiences, especially since the FIL is very much a public fair, besides providing a trade program for international publishing professionals. In fact I learned during the interview that it was created for the public, to give people an opportunity to buy books, as the city of Guadalajara was lacking bookstores at the time. Having a chat with Rubén was a wonderful way to end this year and I hope you'll enjoy it too! Show Notes Rubén's book recommendations – Cometierra by Dolores Reyes (Sigilo for the Spanish (ex USA) edition; to be published as Eartheater in English, translated by Julia Sanches, with HarperVia in September 2021) – Un corazón demasiado grande by Eider Rodriguez (Literatura Random House for the Spanish edition, we didn't find information on a possible forthcoming English edition at the time this episode was published) – Las Malas by Camila Sosa (Tusquets for the Spanish edition, we didn't find information on a possible forthcoming English edition at the time this episode was published) About Rubén Graduated in International Business Management, Rubén works as General Coordinator of Professionals at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL). Among his main tasks, he develops the content of programs such as the International Publishers and Book Professionals Forum, the International Forum of University and Academic Presses and the International Forum of Editorial Design. He is also in charge of the FIL Rights Exchange, the fellowship program of FIL for publishers and editors interested in Spanish-speaking authors. Jury of the 9th Iberoamerican Illustrated Catalog in 2018, he has participated as a speaker in various forums and professional training activities of the publishing industry in the Book Fairs of Bologna (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Festilus (Chile), LéaLA (USA), Taipei (Taiwan), Bogotá (Colombia), Medellin (Colombia), Oaxaca (Mexico), as well as in specialized meetings such as Festilus (Chile), TLA Annual Conference (USA) and FILI (Finland). He participated in the Istanbul Fellowship Program in 2020.

Elisa Strinna, photo by Jessica da Silva Elisa Strinna is an Italian artist currently based in the Netherlands. Her work investigates the nature/culture bisection, addressing, in particular, the interdependence between individuals and technologies and the byproducts of such affiliations. She does that by studying different types of infrastructures -from the geodetic to telecommunication ones, up to green infrastructures. Through sculpture, sound, and video, the artist intends to activate aesthetic ecosystems in which some of the hidden relationships that constitute a landscapes emerge. In these hybrid worlds, it becomes difficult to draw a separation between natural and artificial, geological and human, spiritual and material. Her works have been exhibited at Culturgest Porto (2020), Hong-Gah Museum in Taipei (Taiwan, 2018), at Giardini Greenhouse of the Venice Biennale (Italy, 2015), at the MAXXI Museum (Italy, 2014), at 2012 Taipei Biennial (Taiwan, 2012), at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Guarene (Italy, 2009), amongst others. In Taiwan, you are required to have the Alien Registration Card (ARC), even though it isn't technically considered a visa. We also dive into the challenges of socializing and meeting new people leading up to the pandemic, and compare the learning process for Korean vs. Mandarin.   Todd characterizes Taipei as a "city of mopeds", and other similar cities in Asia. He also explains his average number of hours of teaching a week, and how the contracts can sometimes differ drastically from what's actually offered to someone.
