Welcome to EP16 of Beyond The Balls! Jeff is 38, a father of two beautiful children and has Motor Neurone Disease (MND). He was diagnosed 7 months ago and his body is robbing him of his life with his family. Chi's father also passed away at 68 from MND (Also known as ALS / Lou Gehrig's). It's a terrible disease which shuts down your nerves, but leaves you in full faculty of everything happening around you - including what's being taken away. That includes your movement, your speech, your dignity and ultimately your breathing. It sadly is a disease that is becoming much too common. It is also incredibly poorly understood. We don't know what causes it and there is no cure, with average life expectancy from diagnosis being 2 years. So when we got introduced to Jeff and his wife Sarah, we agreed we would try to change that, to increase awareness of the disease. Jeff & Sarah came on the podcast to talk about what they're going through and it is one of the most profound, inspiring and heartbreaking pieces of work we could ever hope to be a part of. Jeff talks about resilience. About being grateful for a life well lived. About love. About his family. The grace in which he & Sarah have approached his diagnosis is truly, truly astounding. They are by all definitions, incredible human beings, dealt the most unfair hand in life. We hope you can be inspired by this difficult interview. We're back with a brand-new episode of "Don't Tell Mum" after a brief (and much-needed) hiatus! Jamie returns fresh from Bali, and Barney is back from Saudi Arabia for a quick pit stop before heading off again for another three weeks. We catch up on all the travel tales, parenting challenges, and everything in between. One of the biggest updates? Rokit's big move to a "big boy bed!" We chat about how this milestone went down, the highs and lows of the transition, and why it's such a significant step for both parents and kids. Plus, we'll explain why we missed an episode or two—sorry about that! Life's been a bit of a whirlwind, but we're thrilled to be back. We also rave about our latest parenting hack: the Ollie the Owl Clock from Tommee Tippee. If you're struggling with early risers, this might just be the solution you need—it's been a total game changer for us. In this episode, we're also focusing on keeping our facts straight. We tend to talk a lot of nonsense, so don't hesitate to fact-check us as we go! And, of course, we're sharing what's on our summer reading list, including Britney Spears' The Woman in Me and Colleen Hoover's It Ends With Us. Plus, we couldn't resist diving into a Deadpool review—complete with spoilers! Join us for a fun mix of travel stories, parenting insights, and some great summer reading recommendations. We're glad to have you back with us!
After experiencing birth trauma and the isolation of becoming a first-time mother during the pandemic, Laura was both excited and determined that her next pregnancy, birth, and postpartum was going to be different. The experience with her daughter, Millie, was going to be her ‘redo'. Unfortunately for Laura, re-experiencing fetal growth restriction (IUGR) and a precipitous labour broke her. Flashbacks, insomnia, panic attacks, and depression immediately hijacked her second postpartum and left her feeling more hopeless and alone than ever before - an undoing, rather than a redoing. As Millie turns one, Laura and I sit down to reflect on the year that was: the pervasive way that birth trauma impacts our parenting, the incredible and not-so-incredible supports that Laura was able to lean on, the challenges of navigating a mental health system that's not neatly designed to accommodate the logistics of parenting an older child, and the moments Laura can now enjoy with her daughter thanks to the help she did receive. This is Laura's story - a story about reflection and rebuilding - and it isn't one to miss. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. After a blissful experience with her first son, it never occurred to Jess that a subsequent pregnancy and postpartum could be any different - until she found out she was pregnant with twins. From real and perceived health complications, Jess's mental health rapidly declined with every intrusive thought and compulsion that took over her life. The increased caretaking demands of parenting multiples and a toddler only compounded the feeling that she wasn't enough for her children. Despite being cared for by the local acute mental health team, Jess started to experience hallucinations and psychosis. This is one mother's heart-wrenching story that epitomises the painful realities of experiencing a perinatal mental illness: of your children being both your motivation to get better and your trigger; of wanting to keep your children safe but feeling unsafe in your own body and mind; and of wanting the best for your children but feeling like they're better off without you. This is Jess's story. And it isn't a story to miss. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. As a midwife with zero history of mental ill health, Caitlin didn't expect to develop severe postpartum depression and anxiety at all, let alone after the birth of her second child. She certainly didn't expect to be wheeled through the same hospital where she worked down to the psychiatric ward for an eight-week admission. And of course she never expected that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) would be part of her story to treat her treatment-resistant depression. In this poignant episode, Caitlin takes us on her unexpected journey of experiencing mental ill health for the first time in motherhood, of navigating the unfamiliar mental health system to receive the right diagnosis and treatment, and of confronting nearly every taboo of mental health along the way. Finally, Caitlin recalls the special moment when she ‘saw the light', when she no longer felt worthless, and when she felt a glimmer of hope again - which, after everything she went through, was something she never truly expected to feel again. This isn't an episode to miss. You can connect with Caitlin on Instagram at beneaththepalms_midwifery where she draws on her own experiences to advocate for her pregnant and postpartum patients in Cairns, Queensland. Please note, this episode discusses suicidality. Go gently. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. When Tessa was admitted to a mother-and-baby psychiatric unit during pregnancy, she made her unborn baby a promise that they'd never have to return. Unfortunately, the challenges of early postpartum and the pressures of perfection only compounded until she and her new born son were readmitted to her ‘little safe haven' the MBU - not once, but twice. This is one mother's captivating story about finally accepting the need for additional support in its many forms, about letting go of shame and guilt, about coming to terms with a new diagnosis, and about the life-saving impacts that a quality care team can make. Above all, this is Tessa's story about looking back and seeing just how far she's actually come. EPISODE SPONSOR This episode is proudly brought to you by Tommee Tippee Australia. Omar and Brittaney discuss Adil Ray's TV roadblock campaign to encourage ethnic-minority people to take the Covid-19 vaccine. Read Brittaney's feature (https://www.campaignlive.co.uk/article/bame-groups-took-grassroots-takethevaccine-campaign-national-tv-adland-learn/1708378) for more. They also get into Tommee Tippee's attempt at getting real about breastfeeding and how the TV advertising industry seems to be in "experimentation" and "collaboration" modes. Then Paul Cowan talks to Omar about his consultancy work with agencies to fix broken client relationships, how more training is needed for account management, and what lies at the root of common problems that develop all too often. Cowan is about to launch a new book "Connecting with Clients" (https://www.harriman-house.com/Connectingwithclients) , which comes out next month. And are loved by babies and parents in over 70 countries. They are passionate about helping mums and dads embrace this rollercoaster ride that is parenting while encouraging them to trust in their instincts. They are proud to be known as the most breast-like bottles ever! Tommee Tippee’s bottle stretches and flexes just like mum (ouch), is naturally anti-colic just like mum and babies easily latch to it just like mum too! This is probably why 97% of mums recommend Tommee Tippee! (In a 2012 online survey of more than 500 mums who used their closer to nature bottles, 97% stated they would recommend them and 80% found their babies experienced less colic symptoms). Sophie's husband has been giving Goldie a Tomme Tippee bottle of expressed breast milk when we record and she seems to enjoy them just as much as the real deal! No offence taken! Head to their website tommeetippee.com.au to check out their products. The next sponsor of our episode is Redsbaby Redsbaby is an Australian brand of prams, strollers, highchairs and nursery and pram accessories, designed for parents by parents. So this means not only do they look good but they are extremely practical too. Redsbaby have just introduced the customisable METRO3 pram which allows customers to choose their own Chassis colour, bassinet colour and seat fabric colour, to pimp out their pram exactly the way they want it!! The metro also has a supersized 10kg basket, is lightweight, is extremely compact once folded and can fold while the seat is still attached. Another plus is that the bassinet is approved for overnight sleeping when used with the Redsbaby bassinet stand, so it saves you from having to buy yet another baby item!! It is also great as you can move it around the house, take the baby from out and about to in the home asleep without waking them and is easy to take travelling too. This is so handy as she can take the seat on and off depending on whether she has both the girls with her or just Goldie while Poppy is at daycare. As it is an up and down pram, rather than side by side, she can also easily take it in and out of shops and cafes with ease too! Parents around the country are in outrage over moldy sippy cups from a popular brand. FOX's Alex Hein has more: This is Housecall for Health. Outraged parents are taking to social media to share photos of moldy Tommee Tippee sippy cups and it calls for the manufacture to investigate the potential health harm. Parents are claiming the mold on the popular cups can only be seen when opening their anti-leak spout. One parent said that his son's sickness persisted and he couldn't figure out why until he opened the spout of his sippy cup and discovered mold. Photos of the cups have been shared more than 45,000 times with warnings about mildew. The company issued a statement saying the mold issue is likely being caused by the use of non-recommended liquid, which includes thick formula milk, pulpy juice, and warm liquids. The company further said they contacted a concerned parent and are talking to him about his use of the cup. They apologized and are following up on any concerns. The statement also advised parents to clean the cups regularly and said to avoid any potential harm, they would be making a transparent valve available in the future. For more on this story check foxnewshealth.com. Housecall for Health, I'm Alex Hein, FOX News.
