In this episode of the Energy News Beat Daily Standup, the host, Michael Tanner breaks down the economic turbulence sparked by Trump's sweeping tariffs, including a 10% tariff on UK goods and a nearly 100% effective tariff on EV batteries from China. He highlights global concern over rising prices, job losses, and market volatility, while questioning whether the move is about economic strength or managing national debt. He also covers oil's dramatic price drop below $60, driven by OPEC+ production hikes and bearish market sentiment, warning that sustained low prices could stifle U.S. drilling and shake up the energy sector.Highlights of the Podcast 00:00 - Intro01:50 - Trump Tariffs Threaten UK Economic Stability07:22 - EV Battery Costs Set For Sharp Rise On Trump's Tariffs11:30 - Markets Update14:58 - Rig Count Update17::20 - Outro Please see the links below or articles that we discuss in the podcast.Trump Tariffs Threaten UK Economic StabilityEV Battery Costs Set For Sharp Rise On Trump's TariffsOil Price in Freefall Reorders Global Energy LandscapeFollow Stuart On LinkedIn and TwitterFollow Michael On LinkedIn and TwitterENB Top NewsEnergy DashboardENB PodcastENB SubstackENB Trading DeskOil & Gas Investing– Get in Contact With The Show –

A tariff is a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country. Tariffs are used to restrict imports. tariff imposed affects the exporting country indirectly as the domestic consumer might shy away from their product due to the increase in price. If the domestic consumer still chooses the imported product, then the tariff has essentially raised the cost for the domestic consumer. Governments may impose tariffs to raise revenue or to protect domestic industries especially nascent ones from foreign competition. Governments that use tariffs to benefit particular industries often do so to protect companies and jobs. Tariffs can also be used as an extension of foreign policy as their imposition on a trading partner's main exports may be used to exert economic leverage.

Eskom says it will not waive the electricity debt of the residents of Soweto, but it will only freeze the interest. This follows media reports that Eskom plans to waive the residents' debt on condition they convert to prepaid meters. The National Spokesperson of Eskom Khulu Phasiwe says reports are not true, as the only thing that Eskom is considering is to freeze the interest charged on the debt. We earlier caught up with both Eskom's spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe and the Chairperson of the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, Jacob Kganedi....

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has invited Eskom to re-submit a new application for electricity tariff hikes. It earlier rejected the power utiliy's current application, with calls for more certainty and transparency. The regulator says Eskom didn't align its application with the requirements of the Multi-Year Price Determination which guides the levels of increases.
