Sarah Gonzales-McLinn was only 19 years old when she drugged, tied up, and nearly decapitated a man she once thought of as a father, 52 year old Harold Sasko. While Sarah herself has admitted to her crime and the details of the murder itself are clear, her motivation and the trauma that led up to the murder were hardly mentioned in her trial.   Today's episode examines the life of an eccentric, possibly mentally ill woman and the incredible house she built. We‘ll talk about possible hauntings, impossible architecture and the delusion of a heart broken woman. We are discussing Sarah Winchester and what some less than creative people have dubbed The Winchester Mystery House!      Her birth name was Sarah Lockwood Pardee. She was the fifth of seven children born to Leonard Pardee and Sarah Burns. There are no existing records or any other form of factual information to establish Sarah’s date of birth—even the year remains unknown. The scarce information that survives from the historical record indicates her birth must have occurred somewhere between 1835 and 1845. At the time of Sarah’s birth, the Pardee’s were a respectable, upper middle class New Haven family. Her father Leonard was a joiner by trade whose shrewd sense of business found him moving up the ladder of polite society as a successful carriage manufacturer. Later, during the Civil War, he made a fortune supplying ambulances to the Union Army. Young Sarah’s most distinguishing characteristic was that she was everything but ordinary. She was a child prodigy… a fire starter. Ok, no… By all accounts, she was also considered to be quite beautiful. By the age of twelve, Sarah was already fluent in the Latin, French, Spanish, and Italian languages. Furthermore, her knowledge of the classics (most notably Homer… no, not Simpson, and Shakespeare) along with a remarkable talent as a musician was well noticed. It is no wonder that New Haven Society would eventually dub her “The Belle of New Haven.” In addition to Sarah’s brilliance and respectable place in society, there were several factors about New Haven that presented a unique influence on her upbringing. To begin, there was Yale University (originally known as Yale College). From its inception, Yale (and New Haven) was a hub of progressive, Freemasonic-Rosicrucian thinking and activity. By the way, we’ll most definitely be taking a train ride on the Freemasons. As a result, Sarah was raised and educated in an environment ripe with Freemasonic and Rosicrucian philosophy. Several of Sarah’s uncles and cousins were Freemasons. But more importantly, at an early age, she was admitted to Yale’s only female scholastic institution known as the “Young Ladies Collegiate Institute.” Two of the school’s most influential administrators and professors, Judson A. Root and his brother N.W. Taylor Root were both Rose Croix Freemasons. In addition to the liberal arts, the Roots set forth a strict curriculum consisting of the sciences and mathematics. Sounds super fucking boring. Furthermore, two of Sarah’s schoolmates Susan and Rebecca Bacon were the daughters of New Haven’s highly respected Reverend Dr. Leonard Woolsey Bacon (no relation to Francis Bacon, who was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General and as Lord Chancellor of England. His works are credited with developing the scientific method and remained influential through the scientific revolution, just in case you nerds were wondering.). While Sarah and the Bacon girls were attending the school, Dr. Bacon’s sister Delia, also a New Haven resident, attracted considerable fame and attention for writing her famous treatise that Sir Francis Bacon (with the aid of a circle of the finest literary minds of the Elizabethan-Jacobean Age) was the actual author, editor, and publisher of the original works of Shakespeare. Ah ha! See! Her work was sponsored by the author Nathaniel Hawthorne and was later supported by the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Mark Twain! Good ol Samuel Clemens. In addition to her writing, Delia Bacon gave numerous public lectures to the citizens of New Haven; thus, New Haven, Connecticut was the actual birthplace of the “Bacon is Shakespeare” doctrine. We’re here to learn ya, folks! Given her direct exposure to the Baconian Doctrine, along with her passion for the Shakespearean works, it was inevitable that Sarah was drawn like an irresistible force to a more than passing interest in the new theorem. Moreover, the Baconian-Masonic preoccupation with secret encryption techniques using numbered cipher systems most certainly influenced young Sarah’s world view. This unique backdrop to Sarah’s early development played a crucial role which, in essence, defined what would become her life’s work. So much smarts! As we’ll see, the Belle of New Haven became a staunch Baconian for the rest of her life. She just LOOOVED HER BACON! BLTs, Canadian bacon, pancetta… she loved it all! A completely strict diet of fucking bacon! Except turkey bacon. Fuck that fake shit. No, but seriously, She also acquired a vast and uncanny knowledge of Masonic-Rosicrucian ritual and symbolism… SSSYMBOLISM. Additionally, she gravitated to Theosophy. Theosophy is a religion established in the United States during the late nineteenth century. It was founded primarily by the Russian immigrant Helena Blavatsky and draws its teachings predominantly from Blavatsky's writings.Author and historian Ralph Rambo (who actually knew Sarah and is a direct descendant of American bad ass and war hero John J Rambo) wrote “it is believed that Mrs. Winchester was a Theosophist.” Rambo didn’t elaborate on the matter, making him and his statement one of the more boring we’ve heard, but since he was close to Sarah he was certainly in a position to know some things about her. It should be noted that most Rosicrucians are theosophists. Sarah adhered both to Bacon’s Kabbalistic theosophy, which is the eternal belief in the Mortal Kombat franchise no matter how bad their movies are… ok, that was stupid. Anyway, she was also super into the theosophical perspective held by Rudolph Steiner (1861- 1925). Steiner viewed the universe as a vast, living organism in which all things are likened to individually evolving units or cells that comprise a greater universal, synergistic body that is “ever building.” As we shall further see, the “ever building” theme was at the core of Sarah’s methodology. William Wirt Winchester was born in Baltimore, MD on July 22, 1837. He was the only son of Oliver Fisher Winchester and Jane Ellen Hope. In keeping with a popular trend of the day, he was named after William Wirt, the highly popular and longest serving Attorney General of the United States . Soon after William’s arrival, the Winchesters moved to New Haven where the enterprising Oliver, along with his partner John Davies, founded a successful clothing manufacturing company. Gradually, the Winchester patriarch amassed a considerable fortune. Later, Oliver channeled his efforts into a firearms manufacturing venture that eventually (1866) evolved into the famous Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Fuckin’ Winchester! Woo!! According to historical documents, the Winchesters and the Pardees were well acquainted, particularly through the auspices of New Haven’s First Baptist Church. Additionally, Sarah Pardee and William’s sister Annie were classmates at the Young Ladies Collegiate Institute. Not far away, William attended New Haven’s Collegiate and Commercial Institute—another arm of Yale College. Here, William’s teachers included N.W. Taylor Root (one of Sarah’s instructors) and Henry E. Pardee who was another of Sarah’s cousins. Thus, Young Sarah and William found themselves studying virtually the same curriculum under very similar circumstances. Moreover, like the Pardees, the Winchester family was not lacking in members who were Freemasons. Sarah and William were married on September 30, 1862. Their only child, Annie Pardee Winchester came into the world on July 12, 1866. Unfortunately, due to an infantile decease known as Marasmus (a severe form of malnutrition due to the body’s inability to metabolize proteins), Annie died 40 days later. In 1880, Ol Oliver Fisher Winchester died, leaving the succession of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to his only son. One year later, William died of fucking Tuberculosis at the age of 43. Dammit, TB! The double loss of Annie and William was a staggering blow to Sarah. However, the loss did leave the widow Winchester with an inheritance of 20 million dollars (510 million today) plus nearly 50% of the Winchester Arms stock—which, in turn earned her approximately $1,000 dollars per day (25,000 today)  in royalties for the rest of her life—the result of which made her one of the wealthiest women in the world. Get it, girl!  According to Ralph Rambo, john j rambo’s great great uncle, Sarah went on a three year world tour with her new band “Rifles and Posies”, who sold 3 million records worldwide and had a huge hit with their single “fuck tuberculosis” before settling in California in 1884.   “The New Haven Register,” dated 1886, lists Sarah as having been “removed to Europe.” No other information has survived to tell us exactly where Mrs. Winchester went during those years or what her activities consisted of. But we can project some well educated theories. Although Freemasonry has traditionally barred women from its membership, there are numerous documented cases in which some head-strong women have gained admittance into liberal, Masonic Lodges as far back as the 18th Century. A movement in France called Co-Freemasonry, which allows for male and female membership was already underway when Sarah arrived in that country. Given her social status, a predilection towards Freemasonic tenets, and a mastery of the European languages, Sarah could easily have been admitted into any of the permissive French Masonic lodges. Another possible scenario involving Mrs. Winchester’s activities while abroad could well have included visits to esoteric, architectural landmarks such as the French Cathedral of Chartres. Sarah’s Masonic-Rosicrucian interest in labyrinths would have drawn her to Chartres with its 11 circuit labyrinth, a puzzle-like feature that stresses the discipline of the initiatic tradition of the ancient mystery schools. Likewise, she would also have found inspiration in the Freemasonic symbolism and the mysterious structure (including a staircase that leads nowhere) of Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland . In 1884, Sarah took up residence in the San Francisco Bay area—eventually moving inland to the Santa Clara Valley (now San Jose) to buy an eight room farmhouse from one Dr. Robert Caldwell. Her apparent motive for the move was to live in close proximity to her numerous Pardee relatives, most of whom had come to California during the 1849 Gold Rush, and were scattered from Sacramento to the Bay area. One of these Pardee relatives, Enoch H. Pardee, had become a highly respected physician and politician while living in Oakland. Later his son George C. Pardee followed in his father’s footsteps rising to the office of Governor of California (1903- 1907. It is interesting that Wikipedia makes particular note of Enoch Pardee having been “a prominent occultist.” Most likely the occult reference has to do with the fact that both Enoch and his son George were members of the highly secretive and mysterious ( California based) Bohemian Club which was an offshoot of Yale’s Skull and Bones Society. Moreover, Enoch and George were Knights Templar Freemasons. Also interesting, is the fact that President Theodore Roosevelt (another member of the Bohemian Club) came to California in 1903 to ask Governor Pardee to run as his Vice Presidential candidate in the 1904 national election. The offer was turned down. During the same trip, Roosevelt attempted to visit Sarah Pardee Winchester. Again, Roosevelt’s offer was turned down.  THE STORY BEHIND THE HOUSE         The story goes that after the death of her child and her husband she moved to California and bought the 8 room farmhouse and began building. It is said once construction started it was a continuous process. Workers in the area would work in shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  We're going to explore the stories about her mental state,  the construction of the house, and the reports of ghosts and spooky stuff.     The story supposedly starts like this: There was no plan – no official blueprints were drawn up, no architectural vision was created, and yet a once-unfinished house took shape on a sprawling lot in the heart of San Jose, California. Inside, staircases ascended through several levels before ending abruptly, doorways opened to blank walls, and corners rounded to dead ends. The house was the brainchild of Sarah Winchester, heir by marriage to the Winchester firearms fortune, and since the project began in 1884 rumors have swirled about the construction, the inhabitants, and the seemingly endless maze that sits at 525 South Winchester Blvd.Today, the house is known as the Winchester Mystery House, but at the time of its construction, it was simply Sarah Winchester’s House. Newly in possession of a massive fortune and struggling with the loss of her husband and daughter, she sought the advice of a medium. She hoped, perhaps, to get advice from the beyond as to how to spend her fortune or what to do with her life. Though the exact specifics remain between Sarah Winchester and her medium, the story goes that the medium was able to channel dearly departed William, who advised Sarah to leave her home in New Haven, Connecticut, and head west to California. As far as what to do with her money, William answered that too; she was to use the fortune to build a home for the spirits of those who had fallen victim to Winchester rifles, lest she be haunted by them for the rest of her life. So there's that… Spirits from beyond told her to build! After this is when she ended up in San Jose and purchased the farm house. Winchester hired carpenters to work around the clock, expanding the small house into a seven-story mansion. The construction of the House was an “ever building” enterprise in which rotating shifts of workers labored 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. the House gradually mushroomed outward and upward,By the turn of the century, Sarah Winchester had her ghost house: an oddly laid out mansion, with seven stories, 161 rooms, 47 fireplaces, 10,000 panes of glass, two basements, three elevators, and a mysterious fun-house-like interior. It was built at a price tag of the $5 million dollars in 1923 or $71 million today. Due to the lack of a plan and the presence of an architect, the house was constructed haphazardly; rooms were added onto exterior walls resulting in windows overlooking other rooms. Multiple staircases would be added, all with different sized risers, giving each staircase a distorted look. Gold and silver chandeliers hung from the ceilings above hand-inlaid parquet flooring. Dozens of artful stained-glass windows created by Tiffany & Co. dotted the walls, including some designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. One window, in particular, was intended to create a prismatic rainbow effect on the floor when light flowed through it – of course, the window ended up on an interior wall, and thus the effect was never achieved. Even more luxurious than the fixtures was the plumbing an electrical work. Rare for the time, the Winchester Mystery House boasted indoor plumbing, including coveted hot running water, and push-button gas lighting available throughout the home. Additionally, forced-air heating flowed throughout the house. Adding further to the mysterious features, the prime numbers 7, 11, and 13 are repeatedly displayed in various ways throughout the House—the number 13 being most prominent. These numbers consistently show up in the number of windows in many of the rooms, or the number of stairs in the staircases, or the number of rails in the railings, or the number of panels in the floors and walls, or the number of lights in a chandelier, etc. Unquestionably, these three prime numbers were extremely important to Sarah. In 1906 something happened that would change the landscape of california and the Winchester house. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18 with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme). High-intensity shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in the city and lasted for several days. More than 3,000 people died. Over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest earthquakes in the history of the United States. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history and high on the lists of American disasters. Although The impact of the earthquake on San Francisco was the most famous, the earthquake also inflicted considerable damage on several other cities. These include San Jose and Santa Rosa, the entire downtown of which was essentially destroyed. Since if the damage in San Jose was located at, you guessed it, the Winchester house. Standing 7 stories at the time, the house was damaged badly and the top three floors were essentially reduced and the house said at for stories from then on due to the damage.  Aside from its immense size and Victorian style architecture, the House has a number of unique characteristics. To begin, it is undeniably a labyrinth. There are literally miles of maze-like corridors and twisting hallways, some of which have dead ends—forcing the traveler to turn around and back-up. There are also some centrally located passages and stairways that serve as shortcuts allowing a virtual leap from one side of the House to the other. Traversing the labyrinth is truly dizzying and disorienting to one’s sensibilities. The House abounds in oddities and anomalous features. There are rooms within rooms. There is a staircase that leads nowhere, abruptly halting at the ceiling. In another place, there is a door which opens into a solid wall. Some of the House’s 47 chimneys have an overhead ceiling—while, in some places, there are skylights covered by a roof—and some skylights are covered by another skylight—and, in one place, there is a skylight built into the floor. There are tiny doors leading into large spaces, and large doors that lead into very small spaces. In another part of the House, a second story door opens outward to a sheer drop to the ground below. Moreover, upside-down pillars can be found all about the House. Many visitors to the Winchester mansion have justifiably compared its strange design to the work of the late Dutch artist M.C. Escher. Practically a small town unto itself, the Winchester estate was virtually self sufficient with its own carpenter and plumber’s workshops along with an on-premise water and electrical supply, and a sewage drainage system. On September 5, 1922, she died in her sleep of heart failure. A service was held in Palo Alto, California, and her remains lay at Alta Mesa Cemetery until they were transferred, along with those of her sister, to New Haven, Connecticut.  She was buried next to her husband and their infant child in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, Connecticut. She left a will written in thirteen sections, which she signed thirteen times.  In accordance with her will Sarah had her entire estate divided up in generous portions to be distributed among a number of charities and those people who had faithfully spent years in her service. Her favorite niece and secretary, Marian Marriott, oversaw the removal and sale of all of Sarah’s furnishings and personal property. Roy Lieb, Mrs. Winchester’s attorney of many years, had been named in her will as executor to her estate. He sold the House to the people who, in 1933, preserved it as a “living” museum—today, it is known as the Winchester Mystery House also known as California Historical Landmark #868. Although no mention has ever surfaced as to any specific guidelines or special instructions by which Mr. Lieb would select a buyer for the property, one gets the distinct impression that Sarah wanted the House to stand intact and perpetually preserved… and so it does. SOME OF THE FOLKLORE Some of this stuff we've touched on already but here's a rundown of the folklore behind the house.  Despite the fact that Sarah Winchester was extremely secretive about herself, nearly all of what the public thinks it knows about her reads like a mish-mash of gossip out “The National Enquirer.” some refer to this body of misinformation as “The Folklore.” Indeed, on a research visits to the Winchester Mystery House, a senior tour guide informed one writer that “in the old days, the tour guides were encouraged to make up stuff just to give some spice to the story.” The Folklore about Sarah says that, after William’s death in 1881, the highly distraught Mrs. Winchester sought the advice of the then famous Boston medium Adam Coons. During a séance with Coons, Sarah was told that because of the many people who had been slain by the Winchester Rifle, she was cursed by the Winchester fortune. Coons further instructed Sarah that the angry spirits demanded that she move to California and build them a house. Upon her arrival in California, Sarah began holding her own séances every midnight so that she could receive the next day’s building instructions from the spirits. Her séances allegedly involved the use of a Ouija board and planchette, and 13 various colored robes she would ritualistically wear each night (for the edification of the spirits) within the confines of her “Séance Room.” To further appease the angry spirits, Mrs. Winchester made sure the construction of the House went on, nonstop, 24 / 7, 365 days a year for fear that should the building ever stop, she would die. For some inexplicable reason, however, Mrs. Winchester took precautions in the building design so as to incorporate all of the strange features of the House to “confuse the evil spirits.” Moreover, she would ring her alarm bell every night at midnight to signal the spirits that it was séance time, and then again at 2:00 am, signaling the spirits that it was time to depart. Which begs the question “who was in charge of whom?” And, why would spirits’ have an inability or need to keep track of time? Whenever people make mention of Sarah Winchester the typical response you get from people is “Oh yeah…wasn’t she the crazy lady who built that weird house because she was afraid the spirits would kill her?” Many of these people have never been to the Winchester House. Their source is usually television. “ America ’s Most Haunted Places” tops the list of TV shows that grossly reinforces the Folklore of the house. The misinformation is further compounded by the “Haunted House” tour business thriving in San Jose as the commercial enterprise known as the “Winchester Mystery House” which profits by perpetuating the Folklore myth. In fairness to the management of the “WMH,” they try to present Mrs. Winchester in a positive light. However, their Halloween flashlight tours, along with booklets, postcards, coffee mugs and other sundry items being sold in the WMH souvenir shop displaying the title “The Mansion Designed By Spirits” only enhances the Folklore version of Sarah Winchester’s life. You’ve got to hand it to them, they’ve created a highly effective marketing strategy for a very lucrative commercial enterprise. These are good people who mean well—but this is hardly the legacy Sarah wanted to leave to posterity.  Even in more recent times the house keeps giving up secrets. In 2016, a secret attic was discovered. Inside the attic were a pump organ, a Victorian-era couch, a dress form, a sewing machine, and various paintings. There was a rumour that Sarah had a secrecy room full of undisplayed treasures and large amounts of cash, it was thought this attic may have been that room but there is no concrete proof of this.  So these are the stories about Sarah Winchester and her house, now comes the sad news, most of what you think you know, and most of what you've just heard, are myths. Stories that have grown over the years about the woman and the house. Early on we talked about president roosevelt trying to visit Sarah and the house. If you forgot, the story goes that Theodore Roosevelt attempted to visit Sarah at home in 1903, but was turned away. This is used as an example of her alleged weirdness. It is said the rumors likely started about Sarah because in life she was extremely private, refused to address gossip and did not engage much in the community.  This infamous presidential visit never occurred. Eyewitness accounts state that the President's carriage never stopped at the Winchester place. Furthermore, Winchester had rented a house near San Francisco that year to prepare for the wedding of her niece. She was not at home. There is another myth that Sarah would spy on her employees. It is said that some employees believed Sarah could walk through walls and closed doors. The claims are that Sarah had elaborate spying features built into the house. There is no evidence she spied on her workers. Would a suspicious employer retain the same workers for decades? Would she name them in her will? Would she buy them homes? Would they name children after her? All these things happened. In short, there is no evidence that she ever spied on her employees. Then there is the fascination with the number 13 and several other numbers. Since websites detail the occurrences of 13 in the house: 13 robe hooks in the seance room, 13 panes of glass in several windows, a stairway with 13 steps, just to name a few. These facts are used as evidence to prove the woman was ruled by superstition. References to the number 13 were added after Sarah's death, according to workers at the time. The 13 hooks were added not long ago.  Then we have some of the crazy architecture. The story goes that she built crazy things like hallways to nowhere, stairs to nowhere, doors that lead to walls, and doors that lead to several story drops, to confuse spirits. Some websites make much of the architectural "oddities" of the house, such as doors and flights of stairs leading into walls, and how they were supposedly built to confuse vengeful ghosts. Some say there is a more natural explanation—the 1906 earthquake.  Research uncovered the fact that there was massive damage to the house in the trembler and that Sarah never fully repaired it. The stairs and doors that lead to "nowhere" are merely where damage has been sealed off or where landings have fallen away. After the earthquake she moved to another house. She did not want to make the necessary repairs—it had nothing to do with spirits. Not to mention she herself admitted that with her being the architect and having no formal training, things often did not go as planned. "I am constantly having to make an upheaval for some reason,” Winchester wrote to her sister-in-law in 1898. “For instance, my upper hall which leads to the sleeping apartment was rendered so unexpectedly dark by a little addition that after a number of people had missed their footing on the stairs I decided that safety demanded something to be done." Far from an exercise in spiritualism, Winchester’s labyrinth arose because she made mistakes — and had the disposable income to carry on making them. It didn’t help her reputation that she was naturally reserved. While most Bay Area millionaires were out in society, attending galas and loudly donating to charities, Winchester preferred a quiet life with the close family who occasionally lived with her. In the absence of her own voice, locals began to gossip. One of the biggest myths however is the stories of how construction started and kept in going 24-7. There were actually many instances of Sarah sending workers away. Many times in the summer months she would send them away for a couple months because it got too hot. And in the winter she would send them away for a little break for everyone. This has been uncovered in Sarah's own writings. The Feb. 24, 1895 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle ran an article that almost single-handedly laid the foundation for the Winchester Mystery House legend."The sound of the hammer is never hushed,” it reported. “... The reason for it is in Mrs. Winchester's belief that when the house is entirely finished she will die." So aside from appeasing spirits with the continued building this article states that she believes that if she ever finished the house that's when she would die, so that's why she kept building.  "Whether she had discovered the secret of eternal youth and will live as long as the building material, saws and hammers last, or is doomed to disappointment as great as Ponce de Leon in his search for the fountain of life, is a question for time to solve,” the story concludes. Some modern-day historians speculate one of the reasons Winchester kept building was because of the economic climate. By continuing construction, she was able to keep locals employed. In her unusual way, it was an act of kindness. "She had a social conscience and she did try to give back," Winchester Mystery House historian Janan Boehme told the Los Angeles Times in 2017. "This house, in itself, was her biggest social work of all." As far as all of the supernatural talk, most of it started after her death. The famed Winchester mansion fell into the hands of John H. Brown, a theme park worker who designed roller coasters. One of his inventions, the Backety-Back coaster in Canada, killed a woman who was thrown from a car. After her death, the Browns moved to California. When the Winchester house went up for rent, Brown and his wife Mayme jumped at the chance and quickly began playing up the home’s strangeness. Less than two years after Sarah Winchester’s death, newspapers were suddenly beginning to write about the mansion’s supernatural powers. “The seance room, dedicated to the spirit world in which Mrs. Winchester had such faith, is magnificently done in heavy velvet of many colors,” the Healdsburg Tribune wrote in 1924. “... Here are hundreds of clothes hooks, upon which hang many costumes. Mrs. Winchester, it is said, believed that she could don any of these costumes and speak to the spirits of the characters of the area represented by the clothing.” (It is worth noting here: There are no contemporary accounts of Winchester holding seances in the home, and “Ghostland” writes that the “seance room” was actually a gardener’s private quarters.) The myth took hold, though, and the home, with its dead ends and tight turns, is easy to imagine as haunted. Although the spirits are fun, the ghosts shroud the real life of a fascinating, creative woman. Winchester was "as sane and clear headed a woman as I have ever known,” her lawyer Samuel Leib said after her death. “She had a better grasp of business and financial affairs than most men." Speaking of supernatural, let's get into the haunted history. Dozens of psychics have visited the house over the years and most have come away convinced, or claim to be convinced, that spirits still wander the place. It was even named one of the “Most Haunted Places in the World” by Time magazine. Here are just a few tales, courtesy of Winchester tour manager Janan Boehme. The Case of the Ghostly Handyman Some of Sarah Winchester’s loyal workmen and house servants may still be looking after the place, according to sightings of figures or the “feeling of a presence” reported many times over the years, by tour guides and visitors alike. One frequent apparition is a man with jet-black hair believed to have been a former handyman. He’s been seen repairing the fireplace in the ballroom, or pushing an equally spectral wheelbarrow – if wheelbarrows indeed linger in the beyond — down a long, dark hallway. The Secret of the Invisible HandSeveral years ago, a man working on one of the many restoration projects in the mansion started his day early in a section with several fireplaces, known as the Hall of Fires. The house was dead quiet before tours got underway, and he was working up on a ladder when he felt someone tap him on the back. He turned to ask what the person wanted. No one was there. Reassuring himself he’d just imagined the sensation, he went back to his work, only to experience what felt like someone pushing against his back. That was enough. He hurried down the ladder, crossed the estate and started on another project, figuring that someone — or something — didn’t want him working in the Hall of Fires that day. The Sign of the Heavy SighA tour guide named Samantha recently led visitors to the room the Daisy Bedroom, where Sarah Winchester was trapped during the 1906 quake. Samantha was about to begin her spiel when a very clear “sigh” came from the small hallway outside the bedroom door. Thinking one of her guests had merely fallen behind, Samantha turned to call the person into the room but saw no one. Then, as her eyes adjusted to the darkened hallway, she did see something. The form of a small, dark person slowly emerged, gliding around a corner. Samantha quickly stepped around the corner and again saw nothing but heard yet another deep sigh. She felt sure it was the tiny form of Sarah Winchester herself, perhaps peeved to find people in her favorite bedroom. You can find a surveillance video that seems to show a ghost or something moving around in a balcony late ate night on the fourth floor. Just as unexpected things turn up on video, the same is true of photographs. The Winchester Mystery House's own Public Relations Coordinator reports that he took several photos of the mansion in 2015. When he downloaded the photos he deleted what he didn't need. But, one caught his eye. In one window of the house, Tim O'Day spotted something. Was it a shadow? A reflection of a cloud? Or something else? Visitors to the Winchester Mystery House also report taking photos with strange shapes in the windows. A few even shared their snapshots on Facebook. If you visit, study all photos carefully before hitting the delete button. You never know what you will find! Top haunted house movies from ranker.com https://www.ranker.com/list/the-best-haunted-house-movies/ranker-film?ref=collections_btm&l=367358&collectionId=2164

This isn't our typical podcast episode, but we couldn't sit by and not comment on some of the disgusting and horrible feedback Vanderbilt's recent substitute kicker has received. If you aren't familiar with who Sarah Fuller is, she recently filled in as kicker for the Vanderbilt football team. The Division 1 Soccer Player tried out and made the team when their kicking squad came down with Covid. She stepped up for her school, so small people on the internet felt the need to push her down. We ask why people think it is okay to say horrible, vulgar things online, especially when it comes to anyone who pushes gender boundaries and stereotypes. While Sarah's time on the team may have come to a close, we felt it was an important moment to discuss and determine how we can change the way people interact online. If you have thoughts or experiences similar to this, we'd love to hear from you on twitter.

While Sarah grew up thinking of herself as "first-generation," many modern academics & the Census label her as "second-generation." Here's a cool article on all the terms, and how they've evolved. Also, it’s useful to know the difference between push and pull factors that drive immigration. If you want to read a terrific immigrant superhero story, Jen recommends a graphic novel she teaches to her 7th graders, The Shadow Hero by Gene Yang. Quick disclosure: While Sarah is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, this podcast is in no way a replacement for one-on-one therapy with a mental health professional. If you are struggling with mental health issues, we welcome you on this journey, but also invite you to seek out professional help. Looking for a therapist? Here's a good place to start: psychologytoday.com Key Takeaways When you mindfully look for opportunities to say no, you learn that “no” isn't always a negative thing. Often, it's a positive. Watch for all the little things in your daily life that are keeping you from achieving your goals or simply being happy. Start saying no to those things that aren't serving you, as a way of practicing self-care. There are countless types of nos. A no can be as simple as not answering the phone, not opening your email first thing in the morning, or not making unhealthy food choices. Reframe your brain. Think of saying no as a win. Think about what you've made room for instead. What positive things can happen now that you've said no? Check your gut. Ask yourself if you're setting yourself up for a bigger problem down the road by saying yes now. If it feels wrong, it should probably be a no. “No.” is a complete sentence – full stop. Resist the urge to precede it with “Sorry, but…” Not saying no or avoiding a concrete no is the same as saying yes. Episode 411: Do we still follow the Paleo diet?

The Whole View

Welcome back to the Whole View, episode 4-1-1. (0:27) Does 411 still exist as a resource you can call? This week, we have a really amazing question from Holly. The topic is one that has been bouncing around in Sarah's head for a while. When she talks to someone about how she eats, it can be tricky to navigate what vocabulary to use. So now seems like a really good time to dig into this, especially given the recent podcast name change.   Listener Question Holly writes, "Hey ladies, I’m a long time listener of the podcast and I hope by telling you both how awesome you are that you will answer my question. (2:02) Just kidding! But I know it can’t hurt and it's true! Really, thank you both for all the work you do to keep us in the know. I have been finding the Covid shows so helpful and I feel like I get to rant with you both. On to my question, Sarah I noticed your new book has non-paleo and non-aip foods in it and I know the podcast name has changed, so... do you both even still follow a paleo diet? I would love to know what your diets look like now. Also, what do you both recommend now for all of us looking for general health guidelines, if Paleo is no longer the ‘thing’? Thanks again for all you do!   P.S. Sorry Sarah if you cover this in the book, I admittedly have just done a quick scan, and I promise to read it soon.   Sarah's New eBook Sarah completely forgot to tell our podcast listeners that she just launched her Gut Microbiome eBook. (3:01) The book that Holly is referring to is Sarah's new Gut Health Guidebook. Sarah has been working on a Gut Microbiome book for about six years now. She started this book before writing Healing Kitchen. Healing Kitchen was a book writing tangent, and then Paleo Principles was a second book writing tangent. Since Paleo Principles came out, this book has been Sarah's singular focus. She was wrapping it up earlier this year and then when covid hit, it caused a delay in the publication process. Sarah still doesn't know when it will come out, but her guess is that at this point it will be sometime in 2021. As soon as she found out that this was not going to be the late 2020 book she was pushing for, Sarah took the cohesive storyline of diet and lifestyle and package that up into an eBook. The way that the Gut Microbiome book was coming together made it clear that it couldn't be one book the way Paleo Principles is. Sarah is taking the companion cookbook and is also going to create an eBook out of that content. That will launch late this summer. So the Gut Health Guidebook is now live and you can package it together with a preorder of the cookbook. Sarah is offering a special discount for anybody who wants to do that. To find the offer, see here.   From Stacy's Point of View Stacy and crew just got back from being in the wilderness for a week. (6:24) She won't call it camping because it is more glamping. They prepped a lot of food before they left and cooked over the fire each night. It is interesting for Stacy to think about this question in the context of having just been on that trip. The different kinds of foods that they took this trip versus previous glamping trips Things were very similar, with some exceptions. As we talk about what they are each now doing and why, those points will weave in. Years ago they did not take gluten-free graham crackers for example. Stacy made Paleo chocolate chip cookies and then they made marshmallows and used those homemade creations for s' mores. She also wants to note for perspective that it has been over ten years since both Stacy and Sarah started their journey into what she would call a health awakening. They started with this idea of paleo, but that health awakening really started when Cole was born and Stacy was breastfeeding for the first time. This is when Stacy realized that what she was eating was going directly into him. That transitioned over many years until the birth of Wesley, and that was the point in which Stacy realized that her body was responding to certain foods in a way that was hurting her children when nursing. Stacy has learned from her body what she tolerates vs. thrives on. It is also interesting in this world of covid, how we need our bodies to be thriving and to be as strong as possible. Where you is where you are, and there is no shame in where you have been or where you are going. When we talk about diet we talk about how you choose to eat your food. We are not talking about a fad diet, a way that you eat for short-term results. This has always been a key concept on this show. It has always been about a lifestyle. If you focus on what feels best for you and listen to your body, you can find a way to live a balance in your life to not think about food as something as anything other than fuel.   Healthy Living Stacy wants to refer everyone back to episode 358 on Intuitive Eating. (11:16) This show is very representative of our thoughts on anti-diet and intuitive eating. On this episode, we share how you can incorporate this into a way of healthy living. There is a response that your body has to certain foods, and to ignore that is not beneficial to your long-term health. But how can you incorporate those foods without it being a diet that you punish yourself for? This turns food into a reward, which isn't good either. If you find yourself in a place where food has that kind of control or thought pattern, please go back and listen to that episode. It will really tell the full picture of what we are going to dive into with the way we fuel and nourish ourselves. We try to optimize thriving, while still representing the emotional importance of some of that stuff.   From Sarah's Point of View Sarah loves how Stacy framed the way that her healthy awakening journey began because Sarah's started with Adele. (12:33) In her first pregnancy, she has gestational diabetes and she managed her blood sugar really well with careful measuring. When Adele was one she realized that she was getting that same sickish feeling every time she ate. Sarah still had her blood sugar testing supplies and one day after lunch decided to test her levels. Her levels were 200, which is the cusp between pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes. She does not recommend this at all, but Sarah never told her doctor. Sarah felt so much guilt around this reality as she was intimately aware of the consequences of diabetes. So that day was the day that she changed her diet, and she went to the thing she knew. Sarah went low-carb, and in many ways, the last ten years has been a road of recovering from that stretch of low-carb. She was able to lose weight and normalize her blood sugar levels and blood pressure. She had markers showing her that she was healthy, but her autoimmune diseases were getting worse. It was a tradeoff. When Sarah's youngest daughter was closing in on two, it was actually the autoimmune flairs that brought her to paleo. Sarah's immediate was response was that paleo was crazy, but as she dug into it the science made sense. Once Sarah got into it, she went cold turkey with it on August 31, 2011, which helped a lot of things. However, it didn't help everything so for her New Year's resolution that year she started the autoimmune protocol. At that time AIP was very poorly defined. So Sarah defined and established what AIP was and is now, at the same time she was doing it. Sarah was very influenced by Dr. Terry Wahls TEDx presentation.   More on Sarah's Journey So she used her knowledge base to understand how foods interact with the human body, throughout this entire experience. (18:36) And she has never stopped continuing to learn. As Sarah has continued to learn, she has continued to tinker with her diet. Over the years this has turned into something that she doesn't know if paleo is the correct label to describe how she eats now. The term paleo, as is typically defined, is still defined as what you don't eat. Sarah doesn't believe that what you eliminate makes a diet healthy or not. It is actually the foods that you eat that is what determines whether or not that diet is healthy. And it is the nutrient density that serves as the primary criteria as to whether or not a diet supports health. Eliminations are things that you add on top of that to address specific health challenges or goals. Sarah's diet has really expanded over that time. This started in October of 2012 with methodical reintroductions after having followed the AIP for about 10-months. A lot of those reintroductions were successful. When she started the AIP Lecture Series in 2019 she realized that she was scared to reintroduce beyond what she had already done. Sarah was so comfortable with where she is at that she didn't want to reintroduce anything further and run into possible setbacks. However, she realized that she really need to change her mindset around that. When you can expand your diet to allow for nutrient expansion, that is making strides towards improved health. This microbiome research has solidified Sarah's feelings towards a lot of the foods that the paleo diet has been criticized for eliminating. Legumes and rice are two examples that Sarah highlighted.   Where Paleo Fell Short One of the things that paleo has failed in terms of serving its community, is the way it has lumped foods together. (23:19) The framework of the diet says no grains, no dairy, no legumes, and no processed foods. Sarah feels that it is unfair to lump all of those foods together. There are some terrible grains, and there are actually some grains with science to back their different benefits. This is true for legumes as well. When you look at the gut microbiome you can see very clearly which grains and legumes benefit the gut microbiome and which don't. So as Sarah was pulling together this information, she started methodically challenging legumes, dairy, tomatoes, and switched from white to brown rice. What worked has become very moderate additions to her diet. Sarah's diet is still mostly vegetables, fruit, and a moderate serving of protein. Introducing these other foods requires a more nuanced approach. It requires being able to not lump everything together and select what to eat carefully. If we take this nutrient-density approach, then we are eating what we need to thrive, and it changes how we tolerate some foods that might have antinutrients, but ultimately have a lot of valuable nutrition to provide the body. Stacy thinks that there are a lot of things that we have talked about on this show that are all over the place if you are trying to track when and how Stacy and Sarah's journies unfolded.  We know this sounds very complicated. However, doing simple things like meal planning help to make sure that you have certain foods on your meal plan several times a week will simplify the process. For Stacy, it can be something as simple as making homemade tuna salad.   Stacy's Journey Stacy and Sarah have had a similar approach. (29:57) However, Stacy will admit that her approach is a lot less focused on as many nutrients as Sarah is committed to. If Sarah's is more paleo 80/20, Stacy thinks her approach is more 75/25. However, it is also important to understand that her goal is no longer weight loss. She lost 134 pounds at the peak of her weight loss, but she only got to that number of the scale one day and she did it through disordered eating. Stacy justified the disordered eating with intermittent fasting. As a result of her habits, she had digestive distress which caused nutrient deficiency, and she had a thyroid nodule and a huge flair. Sarah and Stacy, along with a medical professional, had to work to help Stacy restore her health during that period. It got really bad healthwise and she needed to recover. Not just gut health had to recover, Stacy's body was in a bad place. In 2015, Stacy asked the question, is your paleo challenge justifying disordered eating?  This was controversial because at the time many were doing paleo challenges every other month as a "normal" part of their diet. Stacy pointed out that this is not being paleo, and eating to incorporate a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory lifestyle. This is using paleo as a yo-yo diet. The more Stacy became aware of what was happening to her and many others in the community, it was where Stacy and Sarah started talking about metrics of health. There was also a lot of fatphobia in the community.   More on Stacy's Journey From Stacy's perspective and awakening in all of this is still very health-focused. (32:19) Stacy wants health, wellness, and longevity for her family. Her original goal with starting Paleo was that she had such low energy and wanting to play with her kids. Thinking about that original goal and where she is at today, Stacy feels that food enabled her to have the energy she needed to get more active. She is worlds apart from where she was in terms of her energy levels and wellness in general. Stacy did put on weight as she came out of that low-carb, paleo period. That was her starved, it was not a real weight. Stacy ended up rebounding and reaching a really good place until she injured her back, which then she couldn't move for a year. Stacy put on weight from that period of time, but she has maintained a significant amount of that weight that she originally lost. However, Stacy really doesn't weigh herself due to her history with how she equates her worth to that number on the scale. Body positivity and self-love have become very important to Stacy as she optimizes her health. Stacy looks at food and asks herself, "is what I am consuming going to give me wellness and longevity?" And sometimes that is the motivating factor she needs to not get ice cream or whatever it is. This comes from a much different place, one without deprivation and punishment and those kinds of things that Stacy did for so long. And it is not linear. For Stacy, she didn't flip a switch and was fixed. These are habits that she has to consistently work on and quarantine has not been easy.   Nutrivore This is where Stacy has really changed her mindset, as she first and foremost thinks of herself as a nutrivore, someone who prioritizes nutrient density. (35:49) Stacy recognizes that they can't have a diet of only white rice, but if they are sick and that is the only thing they are able to keep down, how can they optimize it? They can put in grass-fed ghee, cook the rice in bone broth, put kept on top, and then for their next meal find something else like sweet potatoes to fill the carb cravings. Stacy does focus on adding nutrient density and vegetables to what she describes as a gluten-free, corn-free, legume-free, and night-shade free diet. She would love to be able to eat those foods, but they don't agree with her body. Stacy is not dairy-free in the same way that Sarah is. She can tolerate more dairy, but not every day. The dairy that Stacy tolerates is fat only forms. Stacy feels that there is a big difference in the thought process from where they were, to where they are now.   Sarah's Implementation of a Nutrivore Diet Sarah has something very similar. (38:16) Prior to covid, when Sarah ate in a restaurant she would say she is gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free. These are things she knows she can't do.  The term that Sarah most resonates with now is nutrivore. This best describes Sarah's approach because she looks at food as providing her body with the resources it needs to do all the things it wants to do.  And those resources are nutrients. By adopting the term nutrivore, instead of saying "I eat these foods and not these foods", I'm saying that the primary goal of my diet as a whole is to supply my body with all the essential and non-essential nutrients it needs to thrive from my food. That is the goal.  You can basically fit junky calories into your diet if the bulk of your diet is made up of super nutrient-dense foods.  Because those junky calories at that point are not taking away from meeting that goal of getting all of the nutrients that your body needs. This helps us get away from food labels of good vs. bad, and gets into what is the quality of my diet?  Did I meet my nutritional needs today? And did I meet those needs today with some energy deficit?  Sarah likes that this moves us away from stigmatizing foods.  However, it still recognizes foods that aren't good for anybody.  Sarah doesn't believe that everyone needs to be strictly gluten-free. As we get away from demonizing foods, we can get back to the thing that is most important.  Meeting the body's nutritional needs is a top priority.  From there you can layer eliminations on top of that, or add additional nutritional focus on top of that to meet specific health challenges and goals. For example, Sarah thinks of AIP as a sub diet of a nutrivore approach. There is now emerging science showing that the gut microbiome really needs a minimal amount of carbohydrate.  This amount is probably at least 150 grams a day, if not 200 grams a day.    How to Describe It If Sarah were to describe her diet to someone who was serving her food, she would describe it as gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free. (43:44) If she was talking to her neighbor who wanted to make some dietary changes she would probably use the word nutrivore. Sarah would then talk about the importance of eating a lot of vegetables, higher-quality meat, more seafood, eating fruit, eating a serving of mushrooms a day, and a palm-full of nuts a day.  She would also talk about snout-to-tail eating. Also why soaking legumes is still a best practice.  The focus would be on eating more nutrient-dense foods and allowing them to displace the foods that aren't doing us any favors.  Rather than eliminating foods that are put into this 'no' category.  Stacy thinks this perspective is helpful.  It is helpful to be reminded of what our ultimate goal is. We are then able to ask, ok, how do we get there in a sustainable way.  If you are overly restrictive and you can't stick with that, it isn't good either.  How can you optimize without boomeranging to the other side?   Customization Stacy wants to point out a few more things that are unique to her since she doesn't have a gallbladder. (46:05)  She has to pay particular attention to fats. Matt and Stacy have added more olive oil and avocado oil, and use less lard.  They also eat gluten-free treats.  Stacy doesn't do oats, and they don't do legumes in their family. They do have brown rice pasta about once a week. If Stacy does have a meal of rice or pasta, she does try to ensure that she has a veggie-rich meal on that day to make up for the overall vegetables and nutrients that she is trying to achieve every day.  She also tries to move her body.  It is about how she feels, and she has to listen to her body.  Sarah doesn't feel bad about cooking brown rice pasta at all. Especially after going through the gut microbiome researching and learning about how good rice is for the gut microbiome. It is not a base food because it doesn't have a ton of nutrition, but in the context of a meal that incorporates other nutrient-dense options, it becomes a good contribution.  Stacy mentioned this blog post on casserole prep. She also takes supplements of daily collagen but doesn't drink broth as often as she use to.  Stacy also takes liver pills, vitamin D and magnesium.  She is also adding mushrooms with more intention these days.  Stir-fries are a favorite these days, as Stacy finds it easy to add nutrients to these dishes.  Stacy has added things in, but it hasn't been as thoughtful as Sarah's process.  However, she is very aware of what they are adding and what they are or aren't doing.  Stacy strives to be mindful of balance because social and emotional wellbeing in terms of sustainability and disordered eating has been so impactful to Stacy.  She has had to really learn to listen to her body and really find a balance on how she feels in terms of digestion and energy, more than anything else for it to work long-term. It is important to Stacy to not feel bad or to go off the rails. This can be hard if you come from a place of dysmorphia or eating disorders or any kind of stuff like that. For Stacy, she has worked on that stuff and gone to therapy and become self-aware. If you are struggling with this stuff, you can't just solve it in a vacuum.  When there is emotions around your food, you do have to address the emotion or else you will never solve the problem.   Closing Thoughts One of the things that have allowed Sarah to embrace the term nutrivore is to develop a healthier relationship with food. (1:01:03) Just like when we first adopted paleo, nine to ten years ago, that was always going to be a lifestyle.  It has evolved, and her diet has expanded. While Sarah thinks of it as nutrivore, you could also call it AIP maintenance phase, or paleo plus, or 80/20.  There are other labels that we can use, but it is still a lifestyle.  It is about lifelong health and hopefully improving her longevity.  This still includes getting enough sleep, managing stress, living an active lifestyle, and nature time. These are all still pieces of the health puzzle for Sarah.  But what she has been able to do by shedding the dogmatic rules that have been associated with the paleo diet for so long is to develop a healthier relationship with food. One of the side effects this has had is that portion control is much easier, which has always been a real struggle for Sarah.  This healthier relationship with food has allowed Sarah to regular her cravings and appetite. Getting beyond paleo has allowed Sarah to fix some of the food relationship problems that she was still having on the paleo diet.  Stacy and Sarah have been talking about doing some changes on the show for a long time, and you are seeing some of them with the name change of the show.  They are planning to let go of their G-rating soon, so that they can relax a bit on things. Stacy and Sarah's true unfiltered thoughts on things will be coming through in the next few weeks.  That is it for this week's episode.  Thank you for listening, and we will be back next week! While Sarah’s perspective is optimistic, the space environment is not looking like a favorable one for our human bodies.   Here’s are some interesting questions Dr. Sarah and I ponder together:    When you go into these extreme environments (like space), there are so many detrimental effects on our human body, so understanding the impacts of microgravity is going to be more important as we humans continue explore space.  Or, are we just not intended to be space travelers? Sarah asks me what I’m likely to do when I fall into the icy cold water… and the answer is the complete opposite what I would have thought… Is it possible to mind over matter our bodies into health?    “When your body is aware that it will be exposed to a different environment, it helps you to be better prepared.”-Dr. Sarah Wallace from Casual Space Podcast    About Dr. Sarah: Sarah A. Welcome back to The Paleo View listeners! (0:40) Stacy is using all the energy she has to welcome you to this week's podcast. Over the last few days, Stacy has been working hard to take care of herself as she recovers from being sick. She has turned off her phone, taking lots of time to rest and she honestly does feel so much better. This is now day 3 of what Stacy thinks is the flu. Stacy thinks a recent trip for work is what exposed her to get sick. The day this episode was recorded was Matt and Stacy's 18 year anniversary. Sarah has also been fighting off a head and chest cold. While Sarah knows it is very early on in the cold and flu season, she feels that her family has been very fortunate so far.   The Realities of Getting Sick When you get sick it doesn't mean you have failed as a human, it just happens. Eating a really healthy diet and having a really dialed in lifestyle does not actually make you impervious to infectious organisms. There is this myth that if you do all the things you won't ever get sick. Sarah thinks that this really ignores the fundamental nature of modern life. There is no way to have an immune system that is functioning so spectacularly that nothing ever gets through its defenses. Some are absolutely more resilient than others with regards to infectious organisms, and there is definitely a genetic component here. When we get sick it is partly related to the mutations in the virus that is going around and where you are in the cycle of the virus spreading. It also depends on your stress levels and how in sync you are living with the sun and how much sleep you are getting. Yes, nutrient density matters, but it is like a helmet. It won't necessarily stop you from falling off your bike, but it will protect you from damage. Doing all these diet and lifestyle things will definitely add a protective layer when it comes to infectious organisms. However, it is not wearing full body armor on a bike.   Last Week's Episode Stacy did want to take a moment to apologize for last week's delayed episode. Welcome back Paleo View, and Sarah welcome back to the state! (0:41) Sarah is feeling super jet-lagged. On her trip to Canada, Sarah visited her Dad for a few days. While there she cooked about a month's worth of food for him and reviewed dietary changes. They also reviewed the details of his medications and how these will impact his life. Sarah found out that her Dad was actually dead for 10 minutes. He had a widowmaker heart attack and less than a 10% chance of waking up from the medically induced coma. Once he did wake up, he had a minuscule chance of not having a crippling level of brain damage. However, he is fine. While Sarah's Dad is still recovering and healing from all that happened, he beat all the odds and it is amazing. He is feeling motivated by all that he can do from this point forward. It was a busy few days with her Dad, followed by a trip to Santa Rosa, California where she gave a presentation for a medical school event. Sarah is home and trying to get back to Eastern times and into a routine. In a lot of ways, this trip was very stressful. This week's episode is a science-y one. Postpartum thyroiditis is a topic that Stacy wishes she would have known more about early on in her health journey. Stacy's first thyroid crash when she was done nursing Wesley. The research Sarah did for this show explained a lot of why she felt the way she did when she was pregnant, and how she felt after birth, and then after weaning. It was actually because of the way Sarah was feeling after she weaned her youngest daughter that brought her to Paleo in the first place. All of the symptoms she was struggling with were very much hyperthyroid symptoms. This episode is sponsored by EverlyWell; a brand that Stacy and Sarah love because they provide at-home testing kits for a huge range of lab tests. Most relevant to this episode, they offer a thyroid panel. For more on the many tests they offer and how the at-home testing works, visit here. If you get the thyroid test and are looking to understand those results, these podcast episodes (245, 341, 134)  would be good resources of information.   Reader Question Heather's question that sparked today's episode theme: (11:28) Hey Sarah and Stacy! I love you guys so much and am so grateful to have you and all of the amazingly helpful resources you’ve created as I navigate my life with Hashimoto’s. My question is this: I’m getting back to exercising after having a baby and am noticing that my heart rate goes wicked high (180, sometimes 190+ when I’m really pushing) during a cardio workout, even if my perceived effort is only a 7 or 8. I’ve backed off the intensity but am still getting readings into the 170s when my perceived effort is only maybe a 5. (Note: this is based on the readings on the treadmill/elliptical/bike etc. which I know aren’t the most accurate, but until I get a new HR monitoring device it’s all I’ve got). This is SO FRUSTRATING because I want to push myself but am afraid I may be doing more harm than good. Is this situation common among people with an autoimmune disease? All I can find online is that people with this situation should “see their doctor to make sure it’s not something else” (but they never say what the something else is!). Since so many things are affected by my Hashimoto’s, I can’t help but think it’s playing a factor in this. PLEASE tell me that this is something I can train back to “normal” or cope with in some way! I NEED to run for my sanity!! Thanks Ladies!   While Stacy does not understand someone who runs, she gets what it is like to feel like you can't do something you love and trying to solve that problem. Stacy wants to first note that they are going to assume that all of the things like sleep management, sunlight, and grounding are all being incorporated as well. While these pieces are a lot to put on your to-do list, these are important aspects in hormone health. The thing that Sarah wants to talk about is that when she sees these symptoms, the first thing she thinks about is postpartum thyroiditis.   Thyroid Health & Pregnancy On this episode, Sarah is going to share information on how the thyroid changes throughout pregnancy and upon delivery. They will also discuss what postpartum thyroiditis is and who is at risk for it. Postpartum thyroiditis is a relatively common condition but is rarely diagnosed. However, the sooner you get the diagnosis and start working on the treatment, the more effective that treatment can be. Sarah does recommend that Heather go to a healthcare provider and talk about these symptoms. She also suggests that Heather brings her thyroid test results with her. The number one thing to do is to go get your thyroid checked. Excess thyroid hormone causes heart palpitations and exercise intolerance. This is due to an increase in heart rate and fatigue. The normal increase in heart rate during exercise is exaggerated with thyroid hormones, which is what Heather is describing. Rapid heart rate is the most common sign of hyperthyroidism. During pregnancy, the shift in the immune system puts some autoimmune conditions into remission. For some autoimmune diseases, pregnancy can make them flair. (17:20) The immune system is changing modes but isn't in remission. The thyroid also changes as a result of pregnancy hormones, which is normal. Having sufficient thyroid hormones is really important for supporting a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. During the first eleven weeks of pregnancy, it is mostly maternal thyroid hormones that are driving development. At around eleven weeks, the fetus's thyroid starts to take over producing thyroid hormones. The two hormones that are driving the change in thyroid function are HCG and estrogen. HCG accelerates thyroid hormone production. It is increasing the production of thyroid hormone, which results in a slight decrease in thyroid-stimulating hormone. This impacts the feedback loop. Levels typically return to normal within the second trimester. Estrogen increases the amount of thyroid hormone-binding proteins. So we have this stimulation of the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormone, which lowers TSH. Then we have this increase in thyroid hormone-binding protein, which binds up some of the excess thyroid hormones. This essentially levels out its activities so that levels are not swinging up and down. If a woman has preexisting Hashimoto thyroiditis you can end up suppressing thyroid hormone, especially in the first trimester. It is very common for somebody with preexisting Hashimoto thyroiditis to require higher thyroid hormone replacement throughout pregnancy. Physicians who specialize in this would typically recommend dialing in thyroid hormone replacement doses prior to a woman becoming pregnant. They would then recommend checking thyroid function as soon as pregnancy is detected. (23:19) Typically thyroid function would be very closely monitored throughout pregnancy in somebody who goes into pregnancy knowing they have Hashimoto thyroiditis. They would then get their levels checked every six to eight weeks, but even up to every four weeks depending on how much they are having to adjust the hormone. Then as soon as the baby is born, the mother would be directed to go right back to her prepregnancy level does of the thyroid hormone she is on. This is the standard procedure that is done to avoid postpartum thyroiditis that is medication caused. If somebody has Hashimoto thyroiditis pre-existing and they don't have endocrinologist that is monitoring them throughout pregnancy it can be dangerous. The combination of not having enough thyroid hormone throughout pregnancy can increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is also this need to adjust immediately upon birth to avoid going hyper.   Medication & Supplements It is also worth noting that the iron and calcium in prenatal vitamins inhibit the absorption of thyroid hormone in the gastrointestinal tract. It is standard operating procedure if you are on hormone replacement to take it at least an hour before even drinking coffee. Sarah's super pro-tip when it comes to thyroid replacement medication is to put one in a pill bottle next to your bed. This prevents you from taking more than one. Any mineral supplements shouldn't be taken within four hours of a thyroid hormone dose. If you are pregnant and taking a prenatal vitamin, Sarah recommends taking that vitamin in the afternoon to separate it from the thyroid hormone.   Postpartum Thyroiditis Postpartum thyroiditis happens in this one situation of women with preexisting Hashimoto thyroiditis, but it also happens in women who had no idea they had thyroid issues before pregnancy. (28:32) Studies have shown that women who develop postpartum thyroiditis typically have high concentrations of antithyroid antibodies early in pregnancy. Antibodies are measurable upon childbirth. Generally, measurable antibodies would be diagnostic for Hashimoto thyroiditis. However, in a fairly large percentage of women postpartum thyroiditis might need some treatment to control thyroid hormone levels for a chunk of time. Then the thyroid will sort of return to normal. What this can mean though is an even higher risk of subsequent postpartum thyroiditis in a subsequent pregnancy. Also, the subsequent risk of developing Hashimoto thyroiditis or a more chronic form of hyperthyroidism. We know that this condition is sensitive to hormonal shifts. So the most common times to develop Hashimoto thyroiditis is puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. If you have had postpartum thyroiditis and your thyroid has returned to normal afterward, make sure that you are on guard on what your thyroid is doing as you approach perimenopause. Postpartum thyroiditis is this very acute level of inflammation but does seem to be driven by autoimmune processes that are enhanced because of the hormonal environment after childbirth. You get two phases of postpartum thyroiditis. First, you get a hyper phase, which is what Heather is describing in her question. This means the thyroid is too high. This is a get thee to a doctor time. The symptoms include things like anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, heart palpitations and rapid heartbeat, unexplained weight loss, increase sensitivity to heat, fatigue, shaking like a tremor, and insomnia. Typically in postpartum thyroiditis, the hyperthyroid phase lasts one to four months after delivery. Although, not all women will have a hyperthyroid phase. Some will jump straight into a hypothyroid phase. (32:49) This is a pendulum swing in the other direction, into an underactive thyroid, which is hypothyroidism. The classic symptoms include crippling fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, unexplained weight gain, dry skin, and typically depression. The hypo phase of postpartum thyroiditis begins as the hyper starts to go away, which can be anywhere from a few days after birth to a few weeks after birth. The swing into hypo can last six months up to a year, even a year and a half at most. Some women will never recover from the hypo phase. While it is less common, some women will have just the hyperthyroid and not actually experience the reactive hypo-phase. Sarah covered the risk factors and noted that it is really important to be testing thyroid.   Treatment & Care Graves disease is life-threatening. Hashimoto thyroiditis typically is not, although it is incredibly impactful on the quality of life. It is really important to dial in diet and lifestyle, but also maintain an openness to conventional medical treatment. Be willing to accept when conventional medical treatment is the best course of action. Sarah really wants to remind listeners that medication is not a failure. Stacy reiterated this to listeners. No matter how hard you AIP it, you may still need medical intervention. This is ok, and this is why modern medicine exists. This is also not an excuse to do the hard work of diet and lifestyle. The healthiest approach is to prioritize the diet and lifestyle changes that are going to support lifelong health while using conventional medicine judiciously and in an informed way. It is a matter of using all the tools available to us. (41:29) We are talking about close medical supervision and frequent thyroid testing, which is why EverlyWell's affordable testing may be a great option for anyone going through this. It is important to know that needing this close medical supervision and needing to take medication, doesn't make you a failure. It also does not get you off the hook and mean that it is ok to go eat all the fast food.   Closing Thoughts Stacy thanked Sarah for all of her in-depth science and dose of reality. What has been interesting for Stacy on her health journey is that she has different thyroid symptoms from Sarah. She technically has thyroid disease, but she doesn't need medication. Stacy knows that she needs to retest, which is what she plans to do through EverlyWell. There is a variety of different health conditions, and they impact you differently at different phases in life. (44:54) The path to healing and health is not linear. Stacy thanked Sarah for reminding her to check on her health from a numbers perspective. If you need to do some self-checking, you can do that through EverlyWell and get 15% off your order with the code 'ThePaleoView'. No matter how nervous you might be about the results, it doesn't actually change what your health condition is by avoiding testing for it. The testing gives you actionable information. Thank you again for tuning into this week's episode! Stacy thanked Sarah for doing all the research she did while jet-lagged, and that we are happy to hear that her Dad is on the path to recovery. Sarah and Stacy will be back again next week!

Last year, Healdsburg’s Raven Players surprised this critic with a very interesting production of Quiara Alegría Hudes “Water by the Spoonful”. The play, which tells parallel stories of the tribulations of a returning Iraq war vet trying to assimilate back into civilian life and a group of recovering drug addicts trying to stay clean, was not what I expected from this theatre group whose home is located one block from the quaint wine country destination’s town square. It was a fascinating variation in the norm of this venerable community theatre. This year, they’re opening their season with not one, but two very interesting shows running in repertory – a serious comedy called “Church & State” and the intense drama “Time Stands Still”. With just 72 hours before election day, North Carolina Senator Charles Whitmore (played by Matt Farrell) is having a crisis of faith. A recent school shooting in his hometown has led him to question his belief in God and in his usual staunch defense of the Second Amendment. What’s worse, he’s admitted as much to a reporter. His re-election campaign manager is apoplectic. His Bible-quoting, Glock-toting wife will have none of it. He’s about to make the biggest campaign speech of his life. Will he stick to the script or speak from the heart. Playwright Jason Odell Williams has written an interesting 80-minute polemic on the political paralysis that has gripped our nation on this subject. While there’s no doubt where Williams and director Steven David Martin stand on the issue of gun control, the play does not reduce those who take a different stand to cartoon figures. He’s does, however, wrap the debate in a sitcom-like script albeit one with a joltingly dramatic climax. Farrell does well as the conflicted Senator, though he lacks some of the gravitas and maturity one would expect from a southern politician. Priscilla Locke is terrific as the tough-as-nails wife, and Katie Watts-Whitaker holds her own in scenes between the two. Zack Acevedo plays multiple roles and provides some of the play’s lighter moments as a campaign gofer. For the second show. Caitlin Strom-Martin directs a very strong cast in the Donald Margulies-penned “Time Stands Still”. Maureen O’Neill plays Sarah Goodwin, a photojournalist returning home after being blown up by a roadside bomb in Iraq. She’s accompanied by her partner James (Rusty Thompson), a reporter who had returned stateside earlier after suffering a breakdown from his own war zone experiences. While Sarah’s are more visible, both individuals have scars that run deep. The scabs from those scars are ripped by off by the arrival of Sarah’s editor Richard (Pablo Romero) and his rather young (“There’s young, and there’s embryonic.”) and deceptively lightweight girlfriend Mandy (Emily Tugaw). Their relationship has James contemplating a less chaotic life while Sarah looks to return to her work. Time may stand still but relationships don’t. Margulies’ thought-provoking script about life’s dramas both big and small is well-served by the artists involved in this production. Kudos to the Raven Players for continuing on their occasionally-out-of-the-ordinary programming path. ‘Church & State’ and ‘Time Stands Still’ run in repertory through October 7 at the Raven Performing Arts Theater in Healdsburg. There are Thursday through Sunday performances but the specific show dates and times vary. For more information, go to raventheater.org

While Sarah tackles grooming in Eureka Video's "Allure" and the destruction of the countryside in the BFI's none-more-BFI documentary "Arcadia", Graham seems to have the lighter option with Criterion's "Smithereens" - but there's a sting in that particular tale, and at least one unexpected cameo. Before all of that is our Film of the Week, "BlacKkKlansman". Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

In Part 1 of this series, Marc covers the first half of the first feedback session with Sarah for her personality assessment.   Key Takeaways: [1:35] Marc welcomes you to Episode 93 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast.[1:48] If you’re enjoying this podcast, Marc invites you to share this podcast with like-minded souls. [1:53] Please subscribe on CareerPivot.com, iTunes, Google Play, Podbean, Overcast, TuneIn, Spotify, or Stitcher. Share it on social media, or tell your neighbors and colleagues so Marc can help more people. [2:12] The next two weeks, Marc will present the next career pivot evaluation series with “Can Sarah Repurpose Her Career?” Sarah (not her real name) is employed, a closet creative, and a structured anarchist. Her personality is quite interesting. Marc has seen all aspects of her personality in other clients, but not in this combination. [2:37] This week, Marc will play the first half of the first feedback session and next week, Marc will play the second half. Then Marc will take a break with a Q&A episode and maybe an interview before concluding the series “Can Sarah Repurpose Her Career?”. You will find all of the reports for this episode at https://careerpivot.com/sara [2:57] Marc welcomes Sarah to the podcast and invites Sarah to give her background for the audience. [3:13] Sarah is a group leader in marketing communications. She manages the company’s advertising and promotion process. She works closely with marketing managers, sales training managers, and account reps in the field to create and distribute collateral that helps sell products and services to customers. [3:49] Sarah is a creative and her current role does not allow her to use as much creativity as she would like. She feels frustrated. [4:08] Sarah looks at the signature summary for the Birkman Assessment. Marc explains the two numbers for each component. ‘The usual’ is how Sarah described herself; ‘your needs’ is how Sarah wants to be treated in that same area.[4:33] A big gap between the numbers means you don’t behave the way you want to be treated. It often indicates you are not treated as you want to be. A narrow gap very often means a blind spot. Marc says the science of the assessment is that how you describe other people is actually how you want to be treated. [5:07] In components where the numbers are close to equal, that means Sarah believes she is just like everybody else. Marc says, we know that’s not true. Marc notes Sarah has some very low, low scores. He says this session will be very informative for Sarah. [5:28] Next is the Birkman Interests, showing what you are interested in, not necessarily what you are good at doing. Things that you are really interested in, make you happy and give you energy when you do them. Things that are really low, you may be able to do them, but when you do them too much, they drain you. [5:56] Sarah is very low in numerical, which does not surprise her. She is also introverted according to the Birkman map. [6:19] On the signature report, page 13, Sarah has a 99 rating for artistic. Anything over 90 is something you have to have in your life. Sarah started her career as a floral designer. She loves art projects, gardening, and making things around her pretty and interesting to look at. She loves working with her hands. [7:10] This doesn’t play out at Sarah’s work, which is a point of increasing frustration. However, there is a lot of creation going on, but in her role, she supports other people’s projects. She doesn’t like being in the role of an order taker. She has been doing it for 10 years. She does decorate her cubicle. [8:57] Marc finds people who have high creative interests go into the corporate world and don’t get to fulfill those, and then, what happens is, the life gets sucked out of them. [9:16] Sarah is rated 95 literary. Sarah loves to read. She got into communication from writing and editing. One of her first roles out of college was writing and editing corporate publications and she misses that. Sarah reads business publications and fiction, especially forensic novels. [10:59] Sarah reads for enjoyment, relaxation, and education. She reads before she goes to bed. It’s undisturbed time. [12:09] Marc gives Sarah a suggestion. When Sarah goes into a soul-sucking meeting, or all-day events, that she take 15-minute reading breaks and schedule them into her day. This comes from a book, Quiet, by Susan Cain. It’s about introversion. She talks about restorative niches. Highly creative people should schedule them into their day. [13:01] Marc has a former client who knows to take her drawing pad out two or three times a day. It makes her feel good and re-energizes her. Sarah should schedule reading breaks into her day. [13:22] Sarah is rated 94 musical. She used to play musical instruments at school. She listens to music in the home, usually letting her husband select it. In the car, she listens to podcasts. Marc suggests Sarah should get her phone out and turn on her tunes when she is at a point where she feels exhausted. [14:46] Sarah’s artistic, literary, and musical interests don’t get fulfilled at work. Marc suggests that she needs to insert those interests into work.[15:26] Marc encourages Sarah to take the Start a Blog Course by ProBlogger. Several people in Marc’s online community are going through the course. Marc says Sarah should go write. [16:02] Technical is the next area. Sarah is moderately high in outdoor and scientific. She likes to research. Sarah is low persuasive, which rules out selling her ideas. Sarah is low in administrative. She doesn’t like rules unless they are hers. Sarah is low in numerical. She doesn’t enjoy spreadsheets, but she can understand them. [17:11] Sarah is low in social services, which is not unusual for highly creative people. Sarah questions the administrative and social services scores. She is good at system tracking, record keeping and categorizing for her job. Marc agrees she can do it, but it sucks the life out of her when she has to do too much of it. [18:08] We learn the skills our employer demands of us. We get good at them and may enjoy them, but they are tied to our low interests. When we overuse them, we get burnt out. Marc talks about being a phenomenally good public speaker as an introvert. It sucks the life out of him, though. [19:19] You have to differentiate between the things you are good at and that may bring you some comfort, and the things you are actually interested in doing. [19:35] Next Marc and Sarah look at the behaviors matrix. The behaviors are broken into three areas: interpersonal, organizational, and time management/planning. Marc comments that for someone with such creative interests, Sarah is pretty comfortable with ambiguity. Sarah agrees. Marc points out that is unusual for creative people. [20:51] Marc directs Sarah to the signature report, page 20. There are three bars on the page: usual behavior, needs, and what happens when you don’t get treated the way she wants to be treated. Sarah’s numbers are 6, 31, and 31. The medians in the population are 25, 50, and 50. [21:43] Marc asks Sarah to read about dealing one-on-one. Sarah is direct and straightforward, with objectivity and frankness. She is unevasive, matter-of-fact, frank, and open. Sarah agrees. She has learned the value of directness over time in the business world. She prefers to work with men. [23:50] Sarah’s needs are that she is most comfortable when others are frank and direct toward her. When being praised, she needs to feel that the compliment is genuine and free of sentiment. Sarah agrees. Sarah gets highly impatient when others ramble or evade. It is tiring for her to interact with shy people. [25:19] Sarah’s causes of stress and her stress reactions are that in the presence of shyness or evasiveness, she is likely to feel uncomfortable. She does not respond well to subtlety from others, sometimes making it difficult to recognize their personal needs and feelings. She reacts with reduced concern, detachment, and tactlessness. [26:03] Marc says not to be surprised if she thinks of a tactless statement without saying it. Sarah replies, “All the time!” Sarah husband is also very direct. Stress reactions are more likely to be acted out with our family than at work. We are more comfortable with our family and we know they won’t beat us up. [27:04] On page 17, Sarah’s social energy rating for dealing one-on-many is shown. Sarah’s generally pleasant and outgoing manner makes her at ease in group activities. Her warm and accepting attitude helps her meet people easily. Her usual behavior is sociable, at ease in groups and communicative. Sarah is 84. The median is 75. [27:50] Sarah is pretty social. She does well at networking events. Sarah’s needs: the comfort she displays in social settings conceals her underlying need for considerable time by herself or in the company of one or two significant individuals. Sarah is a closet introvert who has learned to behave like an extrovert. She has a people threshold. [30:03] Sarah likes being around people. She’s good at it. But it sucks the life out of her. [30:54] Marc tells Sarah she’s not getting energy from people, they are pulling it out of her. She just has a large reservoir to pull from and like adrenalin, it wears off. Marc suggests that Sarah bring her books and music when she has to be around people a lot and periodically take downtime during the day. [31:30] Marc had a client who had to present six times in two days at a conference. Marc advised him to take a book and go read in his room for 45 minutes between each presentation. At the end of two days, he actually wasn’t exhausted. [32:04] Sarah’s causes of stress: Continuous pressure to be in social or group sessions can upset her sense of well-being. Without sufficient time to herself, she is likely to become withdrawn, possibly to a surprising extent. [32:45] If the purpose of being with people is a real purpose, Sarah is less likely to feel stress. Getting together for small talk makes her skin crawl. Sarah’s stress reactions are withdrawal, tendency to ignore groups, and becoming impatient. Sarah sees herself. [33:42] Page 23 shows Sarah’s incentives: A predominantly idealistic person, Sarah values cooperative effort and concepts of trust, loyalty, and team spirit. Sarah can think and reason in terms of intangible benefits and prefers to minimize face-to-face, competitive rivalry. Sarah’s behaviors are trustful, loyal, and service-oriented. [34:23] Sarah is a team player. Sarah’s needs: a certain amount of competition and some assurance concerning her personal advancement. While Sarah values team effort, it is good for her to receive recognition for individual effort. [34:45] By nature, Sarah does not consider herself competitive. Sarah’s causes of stress: Her respectful attitude complicates matters when in face-to-face conflict since her feelings and opinions are stronger than they appear to be. People who are opportunistic or unrealistic can be a source of discomfort. [35:52] Sarah is far less competitive than expected for someone who is as direct as she is. Sarah’s stress reactions: becoming distrustful, becoming impractical (idealistic). [36:39] People who are highly artistic tend to be stealth competitors. Sarah is a really good team player. She has learned this behavior to get ahead in business. [37:46] Page 19 shows Sarah’s emotional energy. She prefers to balance between cautious detachment and sincere emotional involvement. She avoids excessive emotionalism and complete detachment. Sarah agrees. Her usual behaviors: objective, yet sympathetic, warm, yet practical. Sarah is at 37. Median is at 25. [39:08] Sarah’s needs: Sarah needs a similar balance in her surroundings. She is at her best in the presence of people who combine logic and practicality with a certain amount of sympathy and understanding for personal feelings. [39:26] Sarah feels suffocated and gets impatient with people who are really emotional and she gets angry and disappointed with people who don’t care about her needs. Both extremes bother her. [40:15] Marc refers back to an episode with “Tim,” who was angry when his boss came to his father’s wake but didn’t say a word after that. Emotionally cold people annoy Sarah. [40:49] Sarah’s causes of stress: extremes in others are likely to put pressure on her own moderation. Too much emotionalism from others can add to her tension, while she may tend to magnify her own problems when others are too detached. Sarah’s stress reactions: dejection, becoming too impersonal, loss of optimism. Sarah agrees. [41:23] Marc will work with Sarah to help her spot her own stress reactions. If she can spot them, she can do something about them, early. [42:59] Check back next week, when Marc finishes the first feedback session in the “Can Sarah Repurpose Her Career?” series.   Mentioned in This Episode: Sara’s Reports Careerpivot.com Birkman Assessments Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, by Susan Cain “FREE Ultimate Guide to Start a Blog Course” by ProBlogger   Please pick up a copy of Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the 2nd Half of Life, by Marc Miller and Susan Lahey. Did my grandparents' diet and lifestyle really help shape who I am? What about my great-grandparents? Do genes really turn on and off? How is this possible? If I were to marry, say, a lifelong smoker, how much of an impact would this genetic "tag" have on our offspring? There are both a genetic predisposition to inheriting a disease and an epigenetic predisposition to inheriting a disease For example, there are a few variants of genes that have much higher risks of autoimmune diseases Sarah shared more examples of gene variants that have a higher risk for various diseases We have this whole separate set of genes that are turned on and turned off based on diet and lifestyle, exposure to toxins, hormone environment, stress, sleep, infection, gut micro biome - and all of the gene expressions impacted from these variables are inheritable So yes, a lifelong smoker would create a genetic impact on their kids The paternal link is just as strong as the maternal link Sarah's appreciation for how her health journey has educated her choices and brought her to where she is today Jessica - if family members have autoimmune conditions, should I adopt an AIP diet to prevent acquiring one?Stacy suggests trying to be aware of what the autoimmune trigger foods are and either avoid or limit them However, it may be hard to stay strict AIP based off of a genetic disposition If you start having symptoms it may motivate you to make those changes, but taking the approach to first build awareness around what the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods are, and consuming as much of those healing foods as possible Understand the key concepts behind the autoimmune protocol and why they work Learning about adequate nutrient levels Taking it from the nutrient density focus as opposed to the elimination focus with be hugely beneficial Don't ignore the lifestyle factors and work on those There is a whole class of autoimmune diseases that occur with hormonal changes - partner with a healthcare provider who can help you monitor these changes Monitor how you feel, and look into health challenges if and when they arise Thanks everyone for listening! We will be back again next week! Outro (57:25)
