When Virtue Labs founder and CEO Melisse Shaban was first introduced to a new technical process for extracting keratin, which promised to upend the world of hair care, she was skeptical. "These guys sold me hard that they had a very unique piece of technology that would revolutionize the skin- and hair-care businesses," she said on the latest episode of Glossy Beauty podcast. "And I was sort of like, 'Hmm, I've heard that before in my lifetime.'" (Shaban was previously the CEO of StriVectin and Frederic Fekkai, the latter before it was sold to Procter & Gamble.) But to her surprise, that technology lived up to the hype. Virtue Labs dedicates 15 employees to extracting keratin -- the protein integral to hair and nails -- from human hair before reintroducing it into shampoos, conditioners and hair masks. The result leaves customers' hair stronger, healthier and fuller -- all of which are adjectives being shouted by every beauty brand in Sephora, Ulta and CVS. "When you overdeliver on promises that people have heard for their entire lives, people are shocked. And they're thankful." Shaban joined the Glossy Beauty podcast to talk about keratin, old school marketing and the technology her brand relies on, which was first invented by an Iraq War veteran seeking to treat battle wounds.

It’s red carpet season, woot woot! So what better time to welcome celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel. You’ve seen his masterful skills on Saoirse Ronan’s bedroom hair for the February Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair.  He also fashioned one of his signature un-average updos for Charlize Theron at the Critics Choice Awards. The LA-based hair pro is also creative director and partner in a line of repairing, pure keratin-based hair products, called Virtue Labs.   Listen in as Carlene fawns all over Adir’s hair accessories collab with Lelet New York, which filled a void for clients like Kristen Stewart and Rooney Mara who wouldn’t be caught dead in the cute-sy aesthetic of typical baubles and bows. With architectural, edgy designs that include antique gold chains cascading from a hair comb worthy of a GOT character, it’s no surprise that the luxe collection was written up in Vogue and subsequently sold out in a snap.   And while Adir may sound completely high-glam, he’s really a bohemian spirit at heart, with a dramatic coming up story that probably warrants a big screen of its own. A hair prodigy if ever there was one, Adir began daydreaming about hair at the age of 5, he began doing hair at age 10, and he started apprenticing at just 15 years old. Spoiler alert: he was living on his own at the time, a ballet student who once was also a back up vocalist for Michael Jackson.   Listen in as Adir shares his red carpet tips and tricks you can really use IRL, including a DIY hack for what to do if your hair products gets lost in a long-haul. Plus, the haircuts that age us; why woke-up-like-this waves are a bit over; and career advice from a legit Hollywood hair guru.   *Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, all products reviewed are gratis media samples submitted for editorial consideration.*   Hosts: Carlene Higgins and Jill Dunn Theme song, used with permission: Cherry Bomb by Saya

Oscar Wilde said, “everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.” Sex and power continue to dominate the headlines, and we’re still processing that along with our increasingly tenuous relationship with the truth. You know things have gone terribly wrong when we're having a national conversation about whether a 14-year-old girl consented to a relationship with a man in his thirties. We discuss the responses to Roy Moore, the President's presence in Asia, and the process and substance of the Republican tax cut plan. Thanks so much to everyone supporting our work on Patreon and to today's sponsors: ModCloth, The Flex Company, and VirtueLabs. We are scheduling speaking events for 2018. Please email Beth for more information. We take a minute to extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by the terrible earthquake in Iran and Iraq. The Washington Post story on Roy Moore has prompted some truly outrageous reactions. We try to unpack the partisanship and tribalism at the root of these reactions as well as what all of this says about voters' shifting standards of conduct for political figures and communities of faith. Beth wishes we could take a look at Roy Moore's conduct on its own instead of trying to connect it to our personal political perspectives. Sarah shares her perspective on stories that Sutherland Springs, Texas, is relying on faith to help cope with the devastating mass shooting that killed so many loved ones in the community. She draws on her experience from the shooting at Heath High School in 1997. We also discuss President Trump's trip to Asia, during which he complimented China's President, neglected to discuss human rights and democracy, and took Vladimir Putin at his word regarding Russian election attacks. To compliment the other side, Sarah appreciates Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin's approach to sexual... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Russian agents bought Facebook ads targeted to voters in crucial swing states in last years elections, and the implications of the attention economy on our democracy go far beyond 2016. We focus on Facebook, Twitter, and the devices we use to distract ourselves from discomfort. Thanks so much to the sponsors for this episode: Baublebar, ModCloth, and Virtue Labs. We start today's podcast discussing an article on why mass shootings tend to be committed by men. We also talk about the Harvey Weinstein story and the bizarrely partisan reactions to that story. We note that the transactional nature of masculine energy seems to be taking shape in the spat that Donald Trump is having with Senator Bob Corker. To compliment the other party, Sarah commends Senator Dean Heller and other Republicans who have urged ATF to review standards on the sale of bump stocks. Beth compliments Senator Dianne Feinstein for her long-term service and work on gun safety measures. For our feature topic, we discuss why Facebook, Twitter, and Google are so effectively and perhaps unintentionally transforming our politics and brains. In our discussion, we cite the following resources: How Information Overload Robs Us of Our Creativity Our Minds Can Be Hijacked Mindful Resistance The Attention Economy and the Demise of the Middle Ground Pema Chodron on Dunzi Realizd app We end, as always, with what's on our minds outside of politics. And thanks to Modcloth and VirtueLabs for sponsoring today's episode. Before discussing foreign policy, we take a moment to acknowledge the devastating earthquakes in Mexico City. Unfortunately, Mexico City is uniquely positioned for more disasters. We talk about the speech President Trump made to the UN, in which he promised to totally destroy North Korea if necessary and talked tough about Venezuela and US sovereignty. We discuss the contradictory mix of intervention and isolation the President promised as well as the tendency on the part of Americans to forget what we "get" in exchange for our global involvement. Next, we discuss the Graham-Cassidy bill and the inexplicable inability of legislators to make a policy case for it. Finally, we discuss listener feedback on our Title IX conversation and Erin's question on how we do it all (and whether that's a question that we should ask each other).
