In this episode of Grow Everything, Karl and Erum sit down with Dr. Glennis Mehra, the absolute powerhouse behind BioLabs at NYU Langone, to talk about what it really takes to build a biotech startup in New York City. From how to deal with imposter syndrome to finding funding in a capital-constrained world, Glennis shares hard-earned insights on how founders can survive (and thrive) in one of the toughest, most exciting biotech ecosystems on the planet. They get into the magic of founder-to-founder collaboration, why biology's complexity is finally getting the respect it deserves, and whether AI is about to make lab work obsolete (spoiler: it's not). Plus, Erum debates whether traveling to Mars just to eat lettuce is worth it.Grow Everything brings the bioeconomy to life. Hosts Karl Schmieder and Erum Azeez Khan share stories and interview the leaders and influencers changing the world by growing everything. Biology is the oldest technology. And it can be engineered. A mobile podcast for Thanksgiving-On-The-Street with Yes!Solutions:This is solo recorded episode while traveling to NYC for Yes!Solutions. I'm promoting our annual volunteer work that is accomplished for Thanksgiving in Harlem, NYC. This episode is about the StreetCorner Gourmets and the non-profit work of Yes Solutions founded by Sister Mary Lanning. We even get our turkeys cooked by surrounding NYC Fire Departments! Thanksgiving Day every year. All-night Wednesday and all-day Thursday. Help is always needed all week long. Launching our StreetCorner Gourmets winter season is the first of our extravagant, touching Three Lonely Holidays On The Street. We Bring Belonging Back! We bring the holidays to the sidewalk for those who don’t have a home or family. We prepare a sumptuous hot meal, cooked overnight and delivered hot from the stove to our street corner table which is a bench at a bus stop. We spend the day with our guests, enjoying conversation, companionship, laughs, family histories, and the happy, eager attentions of our own children and grandchildren. We eat together—turkey, all the go-withs, and enough homemade sweet potato pies to have seconds. And thirds. And take-homes (wherever Home is.) Original StreetCorner Gourmets recipes, prepared overnight on Thanksgiving Eve in our borrowed B-I-G kitchen and in dozens of private homes; delivered hot to the street by whole families, sharing their meal con gusto. Industry Relations EP007 Greg Fischer Takes Us Back to the Future with NYC Brokers vs. Zillow We’re feeling a little déjà vu at Industry Relations as controversy brews between Zillow and brokers in NYC. Everything old is new again with the launch of the premier agent feature on leading real estate marketplace StreetEasy. For the last ten years, agents across the country have dealt with syndication – and it seems New York real estate’s time has come. Today’s guest, Greg Fischer, serves as principal broker at Fred Real Estate Group in Bend, Oregon, and author of the blog Next in Housing. His unique background also includes work in the tech industry with real estate software companies Move, Inc. in San Francisco and Doorsteps in New York City. This makes him uniquely qualified to discuss the bruhaha as NYC brokers decide whether to pay the Zillow tax or boycott it. **Audio alert. Robertson's audio track has an echo effect that we couldn't get rid of in post. But Fischer and Rob audio (which handle the majority of the discussion) sounds great.*** What’s Discussed: How NYC brokers reacted to the premier agent feature on StreetEasy How StreetEasy GM Susan Daimler justified the change Home shoppers deserve the option to connect with agent who represents only them The explicit language used by the StreetEasy product to suggest a buyer agent Why NYC should seek the counsel of brokerages around the country who have dealt with syndication How Manhattan real estate does business differently Listing agents are used to owning all buyer leads REBNY’s request for an investigation into the legality of advertising an exclusive listing The potential to create an MLS in NYC Change in compensation model Dominance of top ten listing brokers Legal ramifications of only sharing data feed with REBNY The differences among IDX, VOW and StreetEasy’s premier agent The danger of dual agency Fischer’s take on leads generated via third-party websites Inquiries rarely lead to sales The evolution of Zillow’s playbook on generating revenue Why brokerages need to get savvy on how ad tech works The value of agents as local experts Compass CEO Robert Reffkin’s concession to Zillow Resources: Greg Fischer’s Premier Agent Blog Post The Real Deal’s Premier Agent Article The Real Deal’s Premier Agent Video Vendor Alley Job Board Connect with Greg Fischer: Blog Twitter
This was a tough one, but had to be done. The great "overshadower" is discussed at length. Many thanks to Maria for being such an awesome guest. She'll be back on to talk about a more fun topic at some point. 7 min: Why NYC is meh. 12 min: The great "overshadower" Donald J Trump. 20 min: Degree of outrage scale. 32 min: Just listen to what Trump says directly. (And is it "butt naked" or "buck naked"?) 42 min: Glenn Beck is sorry. Trump would not be allowed to speak at BYU. 52 min: It's a Muslim ban no matter the spin. He even said it. 1 hr 5 min: Empathy. 1 hr 10 min: Insults and snide remarks make it worse (although 2 tiny hands is still funny). 1 hr 22 min: Cautious optimism and what can be done. We’re basically consuming the worst kind of fuel that we can consume without replenishing any nutrients. There are a lot of self-proclaimed health gurus out there giving all kinds of advice on how you can change your diet, eat healthy, and lose weight. We’ve all heard them, right? But changing your habits and quitting sugar can be extremely challenging. Choosing to eat well is one of the hardest decisions to make. I’ve been choosing to try to eliminate things like sugar from my diet, and while it’s difficult, I find that I feel so much better, tips from experts like today’s guest, Rocco Dispirito, definitely help. Rocco is a celebrity chef, a #1 New York Times Bestselling author with twelve titles, and has been on 7 or 8 TV shows. He also has his own protein powders, shake products, and takes on private clients as well. I don’t know how he sleeps because he is doing so much all of the time. Today I’m talking to him about the state of food in the U.S., the food revolution that’s happening, and his new book The Negative Calorie Diet, which is all about foods that are not only healthy for you in varied ways, but that also help you lose weight. Listen in to hear us talk about sugars, healthy alternatives, finding your cooking style, and the decision to eat well. I’m also excited to be giving away two signed copies of The Negative Calorie Diet! Listen in to hear the details on how to enter to get your hands on this awesome book. I really hope to be able to at some point provide healthy and delicious food that’s available and affordable to just about everyone.
