Sarah and Molly have a good gab with Brendan Leonard, a.k.a. Semi-Rad, author of the satirical-and-insightful book I Hate Running and You Can Too. The trio talks about: -the love-hate relationship many folks have with running and fitness; -the need to becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable;  -the intangible gains running bestows, such as resilience and stoicism;  -the ins-and-out of self-talk; and,  -accountability v. inspiration.  In the intro chitchat, Molly details her upcoming hiking adventure, including her greatest irrational fears. If you've run long enough or are just starting your journey, you probably have a Iove/hate relationship with running.  Running long distances is wonderful and completely irrational at the same time. To help me explore the delightful and nonsensical sport that we all love to hate, I invited author and ultrarunner Brendan Leonard on the Run to the Top. Brendan is a freelance writer and illustrator whose new book, I Hate Running and You Can Too, is a hilarious and relatable trip into the mind of a runner that's not going to top any podiums or win any races, but still regularly runs irrationally long distances. Brendan started his popular website Semi-Rad.com in 2011 as a channel for active, yet not elite athletes, who love to get out there, but don't take themselves too seriously. He's  a contributing editor at Adventure Journal and a columnist at Outside. His stories have appeared in Backpacker, National Geographic Adventure, Men's Journal, Sierra, Adventure Cyclist, and more. He's bicycled across America, runs hundred milers, and he is continually amazed at the things that regular people can do. His work is funny and insightful and he might just inspire you to love (or hate?) your running too.   CONNECT, COMMENT, & COMMUNITY: Semi-Rad.com Leave a review on Apple Podcasts!  A great FREE way to support the show! This week writer, adventurer, coffee drinker, ultra runner, and all around awesome guy Brendan Leonard is back on the podcast!! Brendan is the creator of Semi-Rad where he writes and draws about outdoor adventures, travel, life philosophies, chasing passions, and all sorts of human experiences. Truly some of my favorite things on the internet are found on Semi-Rad! He also directed and produced "How to Run 100 Miles", a wonderful film about him and his buddy Jayson Sime's quest to train for and finish Run Rabbit Run. In this episode we talk about Brendan's new book "I Hate Running and You Can Too" which is a fantastic read that, while focusing on this "irrational passion" of running, really can be seen as a guide to how one approaches any sort of passion in life. I read the book in one sitting and it is loaded with pertinent and quite often hilarious charts and drawings to emphasize his ideas. I can honestly say that I think this book gets it. I really related to it and found myself thinking "Holy moly, he nailed EXACTLY why I love ultra running and what I've found out about myself and the world through competing in this crazy activity. In this episode we talk Brendan's book, trail running, a love of films, snakes falling from the sky, amongst many other things! I had an absolute blast recording this one and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did! Definitely check out Semi-Rad and "I Hate Running and You Can Too" Keep up the amazing work Brendan!! I've always heard people say these two statements, "turn your mess into your message" and "turn your test into your testimony" and for the longest time, I had no clue what it meant. It wasn't until many years later when I was sharing a story with a group of people that someone said to me, "you turned your mess into your message" and that's when I got it. In this episode, I break down how I turned my mess; my struggles, challenges, mistakes, failures and things I have overcome into a powerful message that I share with others. This message has helped people transform their lives and inspired them to do something different. And here's the thing, YOU CAN TOO! You have a message, you have messages, that people are waiting on you to deliver. You have stories, information, life lessons, things you have overcome that you need to share with others to help them take inspired action. And even better, you can monetize that message and make a greater impact in the world. Here's some of what is mentioned in this episode: [5:37] You have a story, you have many stories, you have what I call champion stories within you. And most of us aren't brave enough to tell those stories. And because you're not telling those stories, you can't be that individual that inspires other people that empowers other people, that ignites something with within other people, because you're keeping those stories to yourself. [8:46] if I had waited until, you know, I graduated University, to go back and speak to those young people and try to inspire people in my neighborhood, then that would have never happened because I never graduated University. So they'd still be waiting. [12:50] We all have lessons. We've all been on this journey called life. And no matter how small you think those lessons are, or how small you think that messes, so many other people are going to be able to relate to that. So many other people. I never knew that. I never knew that. And still until I started sharing my message, my messages with people and their reactions. [14:51] You are unique. You have 10 different fingerprints. No one else has any of the fingerprints that you have So that's 10 times the understanding that you should have that you are unique. Nobody else on this planet with over seven and a half billion people have your fingerprints. [17:10] People can have similar experiences. But your experiences are unique because of how you felt, what you were experiencing, who was around you, the lessons that you learned, what you would do differently. All of these things are unique to you.  [23:08] Write down what happened? Who was there? How were you feeling? The lessons that you learn? What was the outcome, write it all out for all five of those. And then start sharing them. Share them in social media, talk to your family, your friends, you know, go live on Instagram or Facebook, just start sharing those stories, and see how they connect with people. [25:17]  Storytelling has been around since the beginning of time for a reason. And that reason is it resonates with people, it sits in their soul. It sits in their hearts and their minds, they remember them, the stories get passed on, for 10s of 1000s of years.  [27:10] I truly believe that there are people out here right right now waiting on you, to get your message out. They're waiting on you.    Show your support for the podcast and become a patron and member and receive exclusive content, resources, and coaching: https://www.patreon.com/grindandgratitude   Links mentioned in this episode: Goal-Achievement System Danny Stone Website Danny Stone Facebook Danny Stone Instagram Danny Stone Twitter Danny Stone LinkedIn

Brendan Leonard is a prolific writer and artist who is best known as the creator of Semi-Rad.com. He’s also the author of a brand new book titled “I Hate Running and You Can Too: How to Get Started, Keep Going, and Make Sense of an Irrational Passion.” The book offers motivation and witty insights into the sometimes-crazy pastime of running. And Brendan knows a thing or two about running irrational distances-- he’s completed multiple 100-mile ultramarathons, ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks, directed the film How to Run 100 Miles, and co-hosts the Off The Couch Podcast, which features interviews with runners of all stripes. - Through his books, filmmaking, and writing on Semi-Rad.com, Brendan offers a unique perspective into the world of outdoor recreation and adventure. Rather than focusing on the mind-blowing feats of super-elite athletes, Brendan’s work highlights the passion and determination of regular people who enjoy pushing themselves hard in the outdoors. Brendan has also perfected the ability to draw larger life lessons from these outdoor adventures-- lessons that can be applied to creative endeavors of any kind. You don’t have to be a runner or mountain athlete to glean actionable wisdom from Brendan’s work, and I personally credit Brendan’s influence with helping me to grow and evolve Mountain & Prairie. - Brendan and I connected a few days before the release of his new book and had a fun and wide-ranging conversation about everything from running to reading, from Ted Lasso to Matthew McCountahey. We started out by discussing his new book I Hate Running and You Can Too-- how the book came to be, the process of writing it, and how its lessons can be applied to writing or other creative pursuits. We then discussed some of his own running achievements, including running 52 marathons over the course of 52 weeks and the life lessons he learned from that year-long commitment. We talked about the fallacy of looking for hacks in running or life, some of Brendan’s creative heroes, the importance of vulnerability, the process of finding his creative voice, recent good books, and much more. - If you’re the type of person who likes to push yourself creatively or physically, this episode is full of wisdom and insight that you can put to use immediately. I’d also encourage you to check out Brendan’s new book, and really all of his work-- check out the links in the episode notes or just head to Semi-Rad.com.  Huge thanks to Brendan, and I hope you enjoy. --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 6:00 – Brendan discusses his latest book, I Hate Running and You Can Too 10:00 – Brendan discusses his progression as a runner 18:15 – Brendan talks about his experience running 52 marathons in 52 weeks 27:00 – The lessons Brendan learned from 52 marathon challenge 33:00 – Brendan explains how becoming a runner influenced other areas of his life 36:30 – Brendan discusses his claim that “there are no hacks” in running (or life) 42:00 – Who Brendan looks up to 50:30 – Brendan explores the process of finding his voice 55:30 – Brendan discusses vulnerability and the process of sharing his own experiences in his writing 1:02:30 – Brendan’s book recommendations 1:07:30 – Brendan’s parting words of wisdom --- Semi-Rad.com "I Hate Running and You Can Too" by Brendan Leonard "How to Run 100 Miles" All of Brendan's Books Brendan's first M&P episode --- SPECIAL OFFER for Mountain & Prairie listeners: Freeflow Institute is a Montana-based organization that builds opportunities for creativity, space, and access to wild places for writers, artists, and leaders of all backgrounds. Freeflow eliminates the barrier between you, your ideas, and your environment by bringing emerging and established writers, leaders, artists, and communicators together into wild landscapes. Freedom Within Reach With Angeline Wehmeyer

This weekend, I was listening to Simon Sinek's Start With Why. I watched his Youtube video when he was talking about Start With Why and it is so powerful because there are so many businesses out there and we always begin with "what we do" and "how we do it", but not many begin with "why". I came from a very humble beginning. When I was growing up, I only got to see my parents twice a year. I never had a childhood around my parents and I don't even know how it's like to be in my parents' arms. It never happened because they were always in a different city to make a living. That planted seeds in my head - that money separated our family and I didn't want that to ever happen to my family. That is also why I am very grateful that I was able to come to the US and work towards my goal - which is to become financially free. To never have to worry about money, for money to never dictate whether I could do certain things. When I got to the US, I thought that in order to become successful, I had to have a degree, so I got my Master's Degree in Business. But the truth is if you want to go to college, go for your passion and not the pension. I have seen so many people including myself, who get their degrees and work hard for years to pay off their student loans, making it very hard for them to get ahead. It was not until I read Robert Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and learned to shift my mindset from employee to entrepreneur, that I started looking for different ways to become an entrepreneur and investor. It is my 12th year in the US and I have looked for different ways to become an investor, I have started many different types of business ventures and investments, and I have done it all. I've been through a lot of challenges, invested a lot of money, and lost a lot of money in the process. I know how it feels to have a strong desire to become financially independent and free without guidance. There will be a lot of trial and error. When I was in Real Estate, I realized that I needed to learn more about money because even when I went to school for business, I did not know how to manage my money. I went to a financial advisor for help, but all they did was ask questions about our finances and put us in a mutual fund without enough education. That is why I understand how frustrating this can be. I have been through all of that, including when you do not know if your money is working for you or if it is working for somebody else while you are paying a bunch of fees. But I am very grateful and I never give up. I keep going no matter what. No matter how many mistakes I make and how much money I lose, I keep going because I am very determined to become financially independent. I do not want what happened to me to happen to my children, and I will do everything, regardless of how long it will take. I am committed to making it happen. Once you become committed to what you want to happen, the resources will start coming to you. I am also very grateful that I met my mentor in the financial industry. He taught me a lot of things - how to manage my money, how the principles of investment work, and from then, I became more confident. I realized that I can become the master of my own money. I can become the master of my own finances. I applied the things he taught me and built an even stronger financial foundation for myself, and fast forward to today, we are living in a lovely home with a beautiful family. My parents have retired, and my family lives in my house. I am very grateful that I have accomplished that. This is not meant to impress you, but to inspire you that it is possible if you keep going. If financial independence is really important to you, do not ever give up. Keep searching. I have a really strong WHY. If I did not, I would have given up many years ago. Another great mentor I had was a very successful billionaire. He wrote the book that says "You Can Too!", and on the cover, it says,
