Nik Kinley is a business psychologist and successful author with over 30 years' experience specialising in assessing leaders, changing people's behaviour and evolving organisational cultures. In an engaging discussion with Rob Feltham, Nik talks about his latest book, co-authored with Shlomo Ben-Hur, entitled Re-writing your Leadership Code: How your childhood made you the leader you are, and what you can do about it.  Nik shows how our past experiences create instincts and tendencies that we are often unaware of, but that tend to come out when we're under pressure and can fundamentally affect how we operate as leaders, both in a good way and in a bad way. Leaders who understand their instinctive responses to pressurised situations have the opportunity to manage those situations better. In the discussion Nik also touches on the relevance of this type of analysis in the leadership assessment context. He also talks about the interaction of personality and power, and describes how positions of power amplify what people ‘bring with them'.  Nik's varied career background includes commercial roles, senior corporate HR positions (with BP and with Barclays) and consulting roles - with YSC and with Accenture - as well as over a decade working in prisons as a forensic psychotherapist. He has thus worked with royalty, CEOs, murderers, politicians and children. During his time as a consultant, he has assessed over 1,000 senior executives from across the world. And as a coach, he has worked with Boards, CEOs and executive teams across industries and regions. He has written a series of books on leadership, change and talent management, published award-winning papers in academic journals, and is a regular lecturer at some of the world's most prestigious business schools.  Rob Feltham is Podcast Editor of The ABP.

In today's episode of the Why to How podcast, as we explore Christian's adventures in STEM, I wanted to focus the conversation on two main topics: the importance of effective science communication, as well as the challenges involved in the commercialization of ideas. Christian Theriault is an award-winning serial entrepreneur with expertise across several deeptech industries. He has co-founded or been involved with startups in robotics, machine vision, medical devices, and new chemical entity development. His latest company, which was acquired by a Japanese multinational, had the distinction of producing the world's fastest focusing lens – widely used across several markets ranging from laser material processing to metrology and biomedical imaging. More recently, Christian has been involved with mentoring high-tech startups through his participation in various accelerator programs, angel groups, and the National Science Foundation. Christian holds an MSE in Material Science and Process Management and an A.B. in Molecular Biology and Bioengineering, both from Princeton University; he has authored several academic papers and holds numerous patents. He currently serves as an advisor to several technology and consumer facing startups and resides in New York City. He is an alumnus of four CWSF/ESPCs which he credits for shaping his intellectual curiosity and love of learning, as well as being one of YSC's newest Board members. Please show your support for Christian as we welcome him to the Why to How podcast! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whytohow/message

As COVID-19 has spread, many aspects of our working lives have changed. Some of us wear masks and face-shields; some join meetings from our couches; others juggle conference calls and toddler nap times.  For leaders overseeing teams, there are also new challenges. As information about the virus and economic conditions change rapidly, leaders must make quick (and often painful) decisions about staffing, shutting down offices, and pivoting business plans overnight. Meanwhile, there are the more mundane—but still critical—day-to-day challenges of overseeing a team effectively during a global pandemic. How do you hold meetings when your team is suddenly all remote? How can you accommodate more flexible employee schedules while still meeting productivity goals? How often should you be communicating with your employees?  To get answers to these questions, on this week’s episode of Secrets of the Most Productive People, assistant editor Pavithra Mohan and I speak with Eric Pliner, CEO of YSC consulting. Pliner, who is an executive coach for Fortune 500 companies, also shares his thoughts on the importance of thinking long term and acting in a way that will elevate company culture beyond the immediate crisis. She holds Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga teaching and yoga therapist certifications.  With over 30 years of learning and teaching as a yoga therapist, Judy has developed Bodymind Recalibration™ a multi-discipline practice building cognitive and somatic body-mind relationships and founded Connected Warriors, the largest volunteer based non-profit delivering Trauma-Conscious yoga programs to active-duty servicemembers, veterans and their families around the world. Judy developed Trauma-Conscious Yoga methodology in 2007 from her therapy work with an U.S. Army Ranger diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) easing his journey and extending the length and quality of his life.  Trauma-Conscious Yoga is based on the understanding that trauma is held in the cells of the body and mind – it is physiological rather than psychological.  Reconnecting the body and mind with the synchronization of conscious breath, movement and concentration in a safe, secure and predictable environment supports healing and wellness.  This protocol has been used in 3 university clinical studies and is currently being used by Connected Warriors and other health care practitioners.  As a member of Yoga Alliance Advisory Board, On-line Presenter and part of their Core Curriculum Working Group Judy has been able to share her passion for this practice of yoga to support the yoga community. She has also been a significant contributor to the YSC book “Best Practices for Yoga for Veterans”.  Judy is honored to use her body of knowledge as she continues to lead certified yoga teacher trainings, workshops and lectures across the U.S at yoga conferences, festivals, universities, yoga studios and other locations.
