Read The Full Episode Transcription Below: Darren A. Smith Welcome to the world's stickiest learning. My name's Darren Smith, and more importantly, I'm here with our guest. Thank you for coming. Alex, how are you? Alexander McWilliam I'm very good. How are you doing? Darren A. Smith Hey, I'm good. I'm good. We've both got our funky shirts on and striped. You're in check. We better not go to the same party. We'll clash. But hey, we're good. We're good. Let's get back to you. We're going to talk about presenting and about being nervous and speaking up and those types of things. We'll get to that in the nicest possible way. Why should we listen to you when you talk about this topic? Alexander McWilliam Well, we said my name is Alex, which is true, but my full title is Doctor Alexander McWilliam. I've got a PhD in public speaking anxiety and performing under pressure. To my knowledge, the only person in the UK potentially globally with a PhD specialising in this field, and I've been coaching presentation skills confidence when presenting for almost decades, so a wealth of experience. It makes me feel old, but. An expert in the field of anxiety and performing under pressure. Darren A. Smith Two decades we haven't even got any grey hair. What's that about? OK, so you're the only one with the PhD potentially in the world in this. So just tell me about that. How long did you study for to get this? Alexander McWilliam So my PhD took 1/ years in total, so it was three years. Multiple studies I looked at AI looked at all the interventions available for public speaking anxiety into reduction. That was one area of study. I developed a questionnaire to help identify specific public speaking concerns because there's so many in the world. But actually when we're coaching, we need to identify what it is specifically. Darren A. Smith Yeah. Alexander McWilliam And then a last study was using acting and improvisation to help reduce public speaking anxiety. So over the three years, there was all of these studies going on with multiple participants trying to figure out why they get anxious. How do we overcome that? And as there's so many interventions available, can something alternative, like acting in improv, which hasn't seen many mainstream sort of interventions, you see CBT, you see exposure therapy, things like that. But acting in improv, that was the unique route I wanted to go down and bring on my own expertise of being an actor and being an improviser. Darren A. Smith Yeah. Yep. Alexander McWilliam With that so 3 1/2 years of lots and lots of studying, lots of reviewing, lots of writing, and if anyone's doing it, if anyone's done it, they know that it is a mammoth of a task. But so rewarding once it's done. Darren A. Smith Impressive. OK, so 3 1/2 years doing that and and just would you just paint a picture for us? So what did you do? You did some research, not some. You did research. You looked at research you practise it. Is that we did for 3 1/2 years. Alexander McWilliam I read a lot of papers looking at theories, different theories from sports psychology, from psychology, looking at why people fail to perform when it when it matters, and what's happening in our bodies and our brains when ...

Chronic pain can be incredibly debilitating, no matter the circumstances. But what do you do when every possible scan or investigation by medical professionals shows that there is no injury, no degeneration, absolutely nothing visible to warrant the often excruciating pain you're experiencing? This was the experience of beloved 89.9 The Light breakfast host Kel McWilliam. The first sign of chronic back pain that would plague him for years was when he fell to the floor in agony, alone at home and unable to move. Eventually rushed to the emergency department on this occasion and others, he was admitted for days, needing strong pain medication to feel any relief. After years of searching for answers two important health professionals steered Kel towards considering his mental health as the cause of his pain. This was start of Kel's difficult journey to face significant emotional challenges he'd closed himself off from. Now, no longer the 'back guy', Kel shares his journey of psychosomatic pain, debilitation, loss of confidence and ultimately healing through therapy and the support of his wonderful wife (and brekky co-host Lucy), family and friends. This is a powerful episode not to be missed. https://thelight.com.au/shows/lucy-and-kel/ The Body Keeps the Score, Bessel van der Kolk See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

2020 was a vintage from hell for Mount Pleasant chief winemaker, Adrian Sparks. On January 7 he made the tough decision not to make any wine from that year's crop, due to widespread smoke taint. The next day, he found out parent company McWilliam's was going into administration. Going on three years later, Adrian joins us on the Drinks Adventures podcast with nothing but good news from Mount Pleasant. You heard from the Calabria family last season why they didn't want to take on Mount Pleasant as part of their acquisition of McWilliam's Wines. The companies went separate ways after 80 years, and the Hunter Valley winery now has a new lease on life under the ownership of investment group Medich Family Office. The Mediches have gone all in to revitalise the brand, funding a renovation for the cellar door, new viticulture equipment and an optical berry sorter that most winemakers can only dream of. Even the labels have had a revamp, with founder Maurice O'Shea's family crest back on the bottle. I started by asking Adrian to fill in the gaps since I last reported on Mount Pleasant in my 2020 podcast documentary on The Rise and Fall of McWilliam's Wines.

If you caught the https://drinksadventures.com.au/2020/08/09/mcwilliams-wines-concludes-143-years-of-family-ownership-s6e4/ (doco-style episode) I did on McWilliam's Wines in 2020, you'll know the company has been a market leader in fortified wines pretty much since forever. McWilliam's is now owned by Calabria Family Wines. And far from seeing fortifieds as a dying part of the industry, you would have heard https://drinksadventures.com.au/2022/08/11/mcwilliams-wines-aftermath-introducing-the-new-owners-s13e14/ (last episode) that Bill, Michael and Andrew Calabria actually see a lot of potential in them. They recognise that a new generation of drinkers are now getting introduced to fortifieds via Australian whiskies that have been finished in tawny, apera, topaque and muscat casks. Thanks to Calabria's investment, McWilliam's has relaunched its Hanwood Estate range of tawny fortifieds with refreshed branding that takes some cues from whisky, with age statements front and centre. McWilliam's senior winemaker Russell Cody and assistant winemaker Mel McWilliam are ‘custodians' of the fortified barrel collection at the Hanwood Winery, including the 30-Year Old material that is considered Very Rare. In this special episode, produced in partnership with McWilliams, Russell and Mel talk about the resurgence of these historic wines, and the evolution at Hanwood to making Tawny fortified in a slightly drier style. You'll learn how tawny is best consumed, and why you shouldn't call it ‘port' – which Russell himself is still wrestling with. And you'll hopefully come to understand that the rarest fortifieds present incredible value, when considered against the sky-high prices of extra mature whiskies, for example. The McWilliams Hanwood Estate Tawny Collection includes the following: McWilliam's Classic 5-Year Aged Tawny (RRP $20.00) McWilliam's Grand 10-Year Aged Tawny (RRP $28.00) McWilliam's Rare 20-Year Aged Tawny (RRP $80.00) McWilliam's Very Rare 30-Year Aged Tawny (RRP $175.00) Click https://mcwilliams.com.au/shop/premium-fortified (here) for further information.
Season 6 of the Drinks Adventures podcast featured a documentary episode on https://drinksadventures.com.au/2020/08/09/mcwilliams-wines-concludes-143-years-of-family-ownership-s6e4/ (The Rise and Fall of McWilliam's Wines). There are some loose ends for us to tie up, as the 143-year-old company's anticipated sale to Prcstnt Asset Management https://drinksadventures.com.au/2020/12/10/mcwilliams-wines-sale-falls-over/ (ultimately fell over). In this episode, you'll meet the winery's new owner, Calabria Family Wines, which was established in the Riverina in 1945 by Italian immigrants Francesco and Elisabeth Calabria, and is today led by second generation family member, Bill Calabria AM. Bill is still on the winemaking team today, and he joins us this episode along with his sons Andrew Calabria, the company's sales and marketing manager, and Michael Calabria, general manager. The year 2022 was pivotal for Calabria, as the company acquired the McWilliam's Wines brand and Hanwood Winery along with Deakin Estate and La La Land Wines, cementing it among the largest family-owned wine groups in Australia. Vintners & Co. Merchants is the new distribution arm of the company representing Calabria Family Wines' international distribution partnerships and https://drinksadventures.com.au/2022/08/01/fontanafredda-barolo-partners-with-calabrias-vintners-co-merchants/ (includes the Italian brands Fontanafredda), Canti and Librandi, prestigious Portugal port house Dow's, Argentinian winery Dona Paula, and renowned French champagne producer Champagne Deutz. “We have rapidly expanded from a single producer-owned and operated wine company to a wine group housing some of Australia's best-loved wine brands and a selection of diverse international wine distribution partnerships," Andrew Calabria said in a statement. The new brands and products will be serviced by the Calabria Family Wine Group sales team, which has added seven new members, mainly from McWilliam's Wines. Calabria also appointed sixth generation family member, Scott McWilliam, as global brand ambassador for the McWilliam's brand. And first up this episode, I asked Scott what had happened since that supposed 2020 sale of McWilliam's, which seemed like a done deal.

My guest Andrew and I discuss The Simpsons Season 9 Episode 2 The Principle and the Pauper--oft cited as the moment the once might Simpsons began to go downhill. We discuss whether we think this is accurate, the concept of jumping the shark, animated television, responsibility of a program to its audience, hot and cold media and a whole array of other topics. Check out Andrew on twitter @winemovienerd also his Riverdale Podcast Milkshakes and Mimosas. A long career in corporate banking gave Graham McWilliam a taste for branching out on his own. And after a couple of successful entrepreneurial adventures, followed by further spells at RBS and Clydesdale, he took over the reins of a very unusual business. Glencraft is an Aberdeen-based social enterprise founded in 1843 to provide dignity to the disadvantaged through work. The company had specialised in making mattresses for the oil industry but when Graham took over, the price of oil had plummeted, orders had dried up and the business was in trouble. Graham, however, saw an opportunity. Glencraft had a Royal Warrant and a wealth of expertise – and Graham has since transformed the business into a serious player in the international luxury mattress market. The sale of McWilliam's Wines following some well publicised financial struggles has sparked debate about private equity's involvement in the wine industry. With a rich history of 143 years, McWilliam's is one of Australia's best known family wine companies. It has operations encompassing a huge variety of different wine styles and wine regions stretching the entire breadth of the country. You've previously met Scott McWilliam on this podcast back in Season Two when we discussed his unique beer/wine hybrid, the Chardonnay IPA.Scott joins me again this episode, together with his relatives Stephen and Chris McWilliam. All three family members were still working in the business at the time of its recent sale. And Stephen gave me access to some really cool archive material that was enough to tempt me to turn this into a documentary-style episode. If you've been listening to this podcast from the very beginning, you'll know that I've previously experimented with the documentary format, most notably with a really popular episode on the history-making feats of Stone & Wood Brewing Company. That was nearly 18 months ago now, so I've sufficiently recovered to attempt another one. Thanks to the McWilliam family for their candid conversation during what has been a pretty tumultuous time.
Get .1 ASHA CEU hereNo matter your work environment, writing goals and objectives is probably part of your job. Why? There are a few reasons, one of which is that the ASHA Code of Ethics includes several components connecting goals and objectives to effective services. And you can't have goals and objective without our dear friend, data.Data is a common thread that weaves itself throughout the crafting, implementation, and analysis of whether or not somebody met their goals and objectives. You need data about what a person can currently do in order to write goals that are achievable and meaningful, you need to collect data to assess the efficacy of your treatment, and data helps you determine whether or not those goals were met. There are a few guidelines to help us in this goal and objective writing process. Enter the SMART goal. An acronym referring to certain components that should be included within your goal - spoiler alert, there are at least 5 of them.Come join us as we talk through the components we should consider when writing goals, including how we are going to collect our data. Learn more about SMART goals to find out if they could help make the process of goal writing a bit easier, a bit better, and maybe even a bit more enjoyable.Learning OutcomesIdentify at least two components of quality measurement and different types of data collection that are relevant to goal writingIdentify at least two necessary considerations prior to beginning to write goalsLabel and provide at least one example for each component of a SMART goalReferencesBoavida, T., Aguiar, C., McWilliam, R., & Pimentel, J. A career change opened the opportunity for public speaking, and by 2012 that he leapt into full time presenting and writing. Following his educational experience and background, he delivers talks to both children and teachers, children's books on mindset followed. The big message for Ross is inner confidence and self-belief. It has been his mission to spread and shared that message in schools and businesses throughout the world for the last eight years. Hey there word nerds! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Amanda Noll and Howard McWilliam, author and illustrator of the I Need My Monster picture book series. Amanda Noll was born and raised in Canberra, Australia and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. After marrying her college sweetheart, she began working in the purchasing division of a private university (which is ironic, since she despises shopping). She left the business world to attend to the business of raising children and concentrate on her writing. As her kids grew up, she completed a Master’s degree in Education and became an Elementary School Librarian. Amanda blames her fundamentally twisted sense of humor on either genetics or being raised on a steady stream of Australian humor and sci-fi. She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and children. Howard McWilliam left his career as a U.K. financial magazine editor and journalist in 2005 to concentrate on illustrating. He is cover artist for The Week in the U.S. and U.K. and has illustrated dozens of children’s novels, puzzles, and picture books, including the bestselling I Need My Monster series. He lives in Cheltenham, England, with his wife Rebecca and three young sons. In this episode, Amanda, Howard and I discuss: The inspiration behind the My Monster series How one book turned into a series How the author-illustrator relationship works Navigating the line between safe and scary for kids Making picture books accessible for boy and girl readers Plus, their #1 tips for writers. Andrew Teacher from Blackstock Consulting (www.blackstock.co.uk) is joined by Craig McWilliam, CEO of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland to discuss the future of prime London property and London’s West End, together with how the real estate sector needs to enhance its reputation following the stark findings of research published recently by Grosvenor.
Scott McWilliam recently presented a truly wonderful tasting in Dublin. It arrived to us in three distinct flights. Each was fascinating. Scott's family makes some of the most awarded wines in Australia at McWilliam's Wines home to the McWilliam's and Mount Pleasant labels. Our blog over at WineIreland.blog guides us through the tasting which culminated in two of the finest wines we have tasted this year - the Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon and the Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2014. After the tasting Scott chatted to us at the WinePod about how his family makes some of the finest wines in Australia. Thanks to Ampersand Wines and also to the Australian Embassy where the tasting was held Indeed, thanks to Ambassador Richard Andrews for the use of his office for the podcast interview! On an aside it is brilliant to see that McWilliam's presented the Maurice O'Shea Award 2019 to Robert Hill Smith of Yalumba. This is a coveted award to an organisstion, event or individual for outsanding contribution to the Australian Wine industry. Listen HERE to Robert when he visited us at the WinePod earlier this year! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin Ecock's WinePod is brought to us with the assistance of the Santa Rita Wine Room at Monty's of Kathmandu - an excellent place to host your next event or celebration. After having transitioned from a graphic to a product designer Tony McWilliams found himself running Faction Skis, the fastest-growing winter sports brand in the world, before moving on to his latest venture in Ghosts Apparel.
In this second interview with Scott McWilliam we explore the wine scene in Australia today.
Craig McWilliam, chief executive of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, is a developer who is putting his money where his mouth is and addressing “the crisis of trust” in real estate. This discussion – and his commitment - couldn’t be more timely: tonight, Grosvenor’s £500m Bermondsey Old Biscuit Factory scheme goes before planners in Southwark and looks set to be refused. Listen in to hear McWilliam talks about the inherent difficulty in delivering the scheme, what Grosvenor will do differently in future and why public sector leaders need to step up and explain the benefits of development to communities.
What comes to mind first when you think about coffee and donuts? For some, it's simply the Dunkin' Donuts brand or trips with to Tim Hortons before hockey games. For others, it's their favourite Seinfeld episode. Whatever mention of this dynamic duo conjures up in your mind, chances are it's both a positive and timeless one. It is hard to resist coffee especially in the context of it being paired with a righteous piece of pastry. In this episode we welcomed Andrew McWilliam, co-owner and operator of Ratio Coffee & Pastry in Vernon, BC. This establishment started out as a small coffee and pastry cart in Vernon and has evolved into a popular option for the locals. What began as a primary goal of simply providing Vernon with the best coffee and pastry turned into a full fledged, highly regarded business. (Tip: Pre-order a delicious assortment of donuts on any Thursday in preparation for Donut Friday!) Andrew is clearly the "coffee guy" of the operation however, and is happy to share his thoughts on this ever complex segment of the beverage market. As you can expect, we delve head first into the world of coffee and the conversation evolves from there. We explore small business and the leadership and business knowledge that the market demands of such a venture, as well as its correlation to the bigger businesses also devoted to coffee and pastry. Andrew has a demonstrable passion for coffee and, perhaps more importantly, for elevating the experience related to its consumption._______________Ratio Websitehttps://www.ratiocoffee.ca/Ratio Pastry Menuhttps://www.ratiocoffee.ca/daily-features/Ratio Bloghttps://www.ratiocoffee.ca/blog/Ratio on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/ratiovernon/Ratio on Instagram (@ratiovernon)https://www.instagram.com/ratiovernon/?hl=en_______________Small Town Wealth on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/smalltownwealth/?ref=br_rsSmall Town Wealth on Instagramhttps://insta-stalker.com/profile/smalltownwealth/David Scarlatescu on Instagram (@davidtescu)https://www.instagram.com/davidtescu/?hl=enShelby Bouchard on Instagram (@sbokanagan)https://www.instagram.com/sbokanagan/?hl=enClinton Barton on Instagram (@clbsounds)https://www.instagram.com/clbsounds/?hl=enThe Fig Bistrohttps://www.thefigbistro.ca/menu/Shelby Bouchard Real Estate on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/SQBRealEstate/?ref=br_rs See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Peter Donegan chats with Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson. Wilson McWilliam designed and built their first Gold medal winning garden on main avenue Chelsea this June 2017. This interview took place before they were awarded this medal. Considering their first gold post three silver gilt medals at RHS Chelsea, it really makes this interview, for me, quite an insight - because I guess the future for the Breaking Ground garden sponsored by Darwin Property Investment Management Ltd in support of Wellington College, was essentially unknown. From their first garden built together, to how the duo work together in their design, to falling in love; horticulture in mind. And from what a gold medal really means, their 2017 garden at RHS Chelsea, the judging process and just why they strive for only the best and the disappointments that may come with and equally the successes. Josh’s turning point came when he realized he wanted to start deciding what to create versus creating solely for others. His father was an inspiration to him, having had his own company also and this rubbed off on Josh at an early age. Josh realized he was drawn to responsibility, autonomy, and control. It was no surprise then that he began his career as a software and web developer and later started a wide variety of companies in the auto industry and software security before landing in the education sector where he wanted to make a difference the most. Josh had to expand his knowledge and skillset as moved along from being an employee to owning his own companies and developed a strong relationship with one of his bosses, Bill Phelan, whom he later linked up with to start College Factual. He wanted to save people time and money in selecting a college, when the costs of picking the wrong major are increasing along with tuition year after year. For those wanting to start their own business Josh recommends that we do plenty of customer validation by speaking to creating a relationship with your target market and using handy online tools such as usertesting.com so that potential customers can use your product and give feedback. You can reach Josh via Twitter @joshmcwilliam or @collegefactual
The second in a series of short interviews with people connected to the Page to Stage Festival, a two-week showcase of new theatrical writing, which will take place in a variety of venues around Liverpool between 03 and 17 April, 2016. I am covering Page to Stage 2016 for the Little Written Podcast because I was lucky enough to have a play selected for performance at the festival, so these interviews should serve as a nice (if very modest) bit of added publicity for everyone involved. In this episode, I talk to Clarke McWilliam, about his play, The Reluctant Celebrity. If you like what you hear, links related to this play can be found below. My play, An Everyday Apocalypse, tracks the painful breakdown of a marriage against the backdrop of a zombie uprising (Though it’s not really about zombies!) The award-winning author and memoirist Candia McWilliam attests to the edifying power of fiction and biography to help us see the world through the eyes of others, in the third lecture in the Weinrebe series from the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing. McWilliam overcame writer's block following a period of near-blindness brought on by the rare illness blepharospasm to write the Hawthornden Prize-winning memoir What to Look For in Winter. Wolfson College President and OCLW Director Hermione Lee, in her introduction to the lecture, described her voice as "subtle, original and sharp", and her memoir as remarkable for its candour and lack of sef-pity, "told with eloquence, truthfulness and comic brio".

In this lecture Professor McAra-McWilliam explored the application of creativity and imagination in addressing complex challenges in a world that is perceived to be increasingly uncertain and undergoing rapid change. Using her own work on the Creative Imagination, she argued that design processes can generate alternative directions and visions, based on the values which we want to support in our societies. These can therefore work as ‘antidotes’ and alternatives within the discourse of globalisation and individualisation. This lecture used case studies from McAra-McWilliam’s work with Hewlett Packard, Philips and the European Union ‘Connected Community’ research programme which she pioneered. These examples explored how design can foster social and technological innovation with properties which enhance wellbeing.
