When I first met today's guest, she said something that hit me hard. “There will always be a breakdown in childcare.” It's true. This is why solutions for parents who take career breaks are so important to me. Even with flexible employers, things come up when you have kids. Sometimes the challenges are so great that parents, usually mothers, take career breaks to solve these problems. Priya Amin is the co-founder of an innovative virtual childcare company called Flexible Care. She left a thriving career for a family-driven career break and has since dedicated her career to being part of the solution for working parents by founding Flexible Care. In this episode, Priya and I discuss the challenges working parents' face, the evolution of Flexible Care as she and her co-founder try to navigate the needs of parents, as well as the challenges she faced in funding the business' growth. We talk openly about remaining solution-focused in her startup when the original plan didn't work and her advice for female founders who are trying to seek investors for their business. The Flexible Care team successfully raised nearly $1 million in funding, yet it was ironically childcare that presented one of its biggest barriers to funding.   About the Guest: Priya Amin is an entrepreneur, TEDx speaker and mother to two boys, Ronin and Kirin. She holds an MBA from the University of Arizona, and worked as a product and brand manager at corporations such as IBM and Nestle. In 2012, she left her high powered career to be home with her two boys, and never looked back. After successfully launching and running a marketing consulting firm called ROKI, she began looking for ways to continue fostering creativity and entrepreneurship among women. She launched Flexable, LLC in 2016 and was accepted to the 16th cohort of the AlphaLab Accelerator program in 2016. Flexable has gained regional and national attention for providing innovative childcare solutions, most notably on-site childcare at offices and events.  Since the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Flexable pivoted to offering  Virtual Childcare hosted by fully vetted Flexable Facilitators to keep kids 3-10 years old engaged, so working parents can take back their schedule.   Learn more about Flexible Care and connect with Priya Amin at: www.flexablecare.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/priyaamin/ https://twitter.com/praman79   About the Host Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. According to my guest Michelle Arpin Begina, there's a very big difference between income and wealth. I couldn't agree more. Too often families are caught up in a spending pattern to create an illusion of wealth, when in fact they're struggling financially. In this week's episode, I talk with Michelle about the complex relationship she developed with money as a child through her family experiences, what change you really need to focus on to improve your financial situation, and how to use your life's successes unrelated to money to meet your financial goals.   About the Guest: Michelle's earliest memories from childhood all relate to money. And yet, the stories and lessons learned from different branches of her family tree couldn't be more dichotomous! Michelle has used the money lessons from her life to rethink how financial advisors and their clients have traditionally worked together. Rather than thinking of her role as a gatekeeper of portfolios, she sees real value in being a gateway to personal financial freedom. To support her clients on their unique wealth journeys, Michelle is a technician of financial planning, investment, and wealth management. But what differentiates Michelle from other financial advisors is that she has spent the last two-plus decades studying the unconventional, non-financial aspects of life satisfaction, financial therapy (it's a thing), behavioral bias, choice, and decision advising. She believes we all need to examine the money stories, scripts, and lessons that affect our financial psychology so that we can rethink what we know about money to have more of it. Michelle lives in Wyckoff, NJ with her husband, Mike and sons, Alex and Nick. She is an avid photographer – her sons are her favorite subject! In this eye-opening discussion with Julie Lythcott-Haims about her new book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, we discuss the challenges many individuals face as they attempt to step into their adult life, the actions that caused a generational shift in how we view adulting, and what is possible when we step into the adult life we were meant to lead.   In this episode you'll learn: How the fundamental capacities of agency and resilience are underdeveloped in young adults who were over-parented as children How fear and learned helplessness can result as an adult for those who aren't given the opportunity to grow independently The questions we need to ask ourselves when trying to quiet the voice of what others think we should do and begin acting on what we want our path to be   About the Guest: Julie Lythcott-Haims believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way. This is an encore episode that originally aired on June 2, 2020. Meal planning is a great way to save money by cooking more at home, but only if it works for your family! Too often busy moms try to meal plan but because of our ever-changing schedules, picky eaters, and little time to cook, it doesn't work. Today we're interviewing Marie Fiebach of the Feed Your Family Tonight Podcast, who will change the way you meal plan for your family.   About the Guest: Marie Fiebach is a married mother of four active kids aged 12-17.  In 2017 she founded Feed Your Family Tonight to help busy families eat dinner together at home and recapture a little calm in the crazy. She is a cookbook author, podcaster, and has a weekly cooking segment on her local ABC affiliate. Marie knows how hard it is to get dinner on the table whether you are working until 6:00, running kids to after-school activities, or chasing toddlers all day. She has dealt with picky eaters, food allergies, and busy schedules but still manages to feed her family a home-cooked meal almost every night. She wants to help you do the same. IG @MarieFiebach FB Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/FeedYourFamilyTonight/ Website feedyourfamilytonight.com   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating: Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn't fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Mothers didn't want money to drive their family decisions. From these themes The Money, Career, & Motherhood Podcast was born. Now Janice spends her time helping mothers gain confidence and understanding about money, career, and business topics as they relate to motherhood and family – the way many women actually think about money. Janice loves helping mothers implement business and financial strategies within their families to help each family member thrive. Danielle Bettmann, wife, mother, parenting coach, podcast host and this week's brave guest, is sharing her story as the wife of a husband who suffers from alcoholism. She talks about discovering the extent of his disease, what it felt like to try to carry on as normal with those around her during this battle, and the difficult decision to sell the family home to pay for the in-patient treatment her husband needed to get sober. Danielle's husband is celebrating 3.5 years sober, while Danielle and her family are in love with their downsized life and their continued focus on people and experiences versus things.   As many as 76 million Americans (around 45 percent of the population) have been exposed to some form of alcoholism or alcoholic behaviors in their family; and as many as 26.8 million of those people are children. Despite its frequency, those who haven't experienced it firsthand may not realize how close alcoholism is to the ones they know and love, while those struggling with the impact of the disease on their family can feel alone in their struggles. Sometimes women still leave the financial planning activities for their families to their spouse, but it's so important for both men and women, husbands and wives, to be involved in the financial planning for their families. Men and women often think about long term life plans differently, and the most successful family financial plans incorporate both.   In today's episode, I'm talking with Gaea Verneris, Financial Advisor and Owner of Legacy One Financial about how she approaches her clients to ensure the goals of her female clients are incorporated into their family's financial plans, the process of getting to know her clients, and questions individuals can ask advisors to determine if they're the right advisor for them.   We also learn what a 529 savings plan can be used for, which is an area of focus for many families as they explore how to best save for their child's education.   About the Guest: Gaea is a small-town girl, born and raised in the mountains of Twain Harte, CA. Always enjoying an outdoor adventure, she spent her summers climbing trees, bike riding, swimming and her winters on skis! She loves the mountains, however, her career brought her to Ventura County in 2006. After graduating from Sacramento State University with a degree in Digital Media, she embarked on her next journey and moved to sea. She started and grew the video department for Princess Cruises and lived on cruise ships on and off for the next six years. After setting up most of the fleet with video, the corporate office pulled her in to manage from shore in California. In 2009 she decided it was time for a career change and while doing some soul searching found Edward Jones. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that she would become a Financial Advisor, but she took a chance, got hired, passed her exams, opened an office in Carpinteria, CA and never looked back. She absolutely loves her career, and helping people realize their dreams is her passion. She believes financial planning involves more than the game of the stock market, and loves all of her clients and helping them pursue their goals. With nine years of industry experience at Edward Jones behind her, she decided she wanted greater flexibility to offer different solutions that better catered to her client's needs and risk. This led to the creation of Legacy One Financial. Gaea is passionate about providing an experience that helps her clients live happier and healthier lives! She is excited for the opportunity to partner with LPL Financial, one of the leading financial services companies and one of the largest independent broker/dealers in the nation. She is also in some aspect partnered with other large consulting firms under the LPL umbrella, with offices across California. These partnerships afford Legacy One the ability to offer the best array of products for her clients. She is excited for the opportunity to meet and work with new individuals with her company, Legacy One Financial. Gaea and her husband Jay have an adorable 3-year-old girl named Bayzil, who keeps them on their toes and brings more joy to their world than they ever thought possible. As a family, they love to travel around the globe, see concerts and live music, go wine tasting, spend time with family and friends, give back to the community and live life to the fullest. Her own family life and time in this career has also taught her how to get her own financial well-being in check, and for that she is truly grateful. So often mothers look at their career break as a significant negative to overcome when they look to return to the workforce. But in the case of Janis Powers, founder of the cutting edge start-up Longitudinal Health Care, it was so much more than that. By taking advantage of different developmental opportunities, Janis was able to return from her break not only with a fresh perspective on the industry in which she worked, but also with new skills that are serving her well now as founder and fundraiser for her company. Janis and I talk about the importance of exercising your brain while on career break, why you should do something you're interested in unrelated to your kids, and how strategic volunteering can help launch your next career.   Check out Janis' fictional story on professional motherhood, Mama's Got a Brand New Job, and her nonfiction analysis of the American health care system, Health Care: Meet the American Dream.   About the Guest: Janis Powers is the CEO and Founder of Longitudinal Health Care, a start-up on a mission to eliminate health insurance. Today's insurance model is based on spreading risk across multiple constituents in the health care ecosystem. Janis' company thinks this model is flawed because there should be very little risk due to advancements in genetics and predictive analytics. Prior to Longitudinal, Janis worked as a health care strategy and operations consultant and became fixated on health care's cost accounting problem. The electronic medical records that many providers use are really billing systems, not cost accounting systems. That means there's a lack of understanding about how much goods and services delivered by providers actually cost. It's an important reason why consumers can't get their hands on good pricing information. Addressing this pricing issue is a critical component of Longitudinal's business strategy. Prior to Longitudinal, Janis published the Amazon Bestselling book Health Care: Meet the American Dream. The book describes why the current health care system needs structural change and then lays out a “perfect world” model for how it could be. Too many of us have accepted the stress and misery that comes with our careers. If you're unhappy in your professional life, but feel like you need to stick it out because you think “This is what it feels like to be successful,” this episode is for you. Our guest, HR and career strategist Laurel Rutledge, is on a mission to help more women get out of career misery and into a career path aligned with their values and skills. In this empowering episode, you'll learn: Why we stay in jobs that are making us miserable How saying yes to new opportunities can help us find the path to where we really want to go professionally How to improve our experience when we feel stuck in a job that is not serving us well   About the Guest: With nearly 30 years of domestic and global, Laurel speaks the language of organizations. She uses her specialized expertise in risk management, consulting and human resources to guide individual clients through a customized process to address the challenges they are facing while building their teams. Laurel created LaurelRutledge.com, The Rutledge Perspective Podcast and The ReSource after nearly 30 years in a corporate career. Being data-driven as well as people focused, Laurel knows how to work with leaders ensure that all aspects of a decision are brought forward and those in decision-making positions are accountable for the decisions that are made. It's not about who is right, but about what is the best decision to be made with the greatest return and the least amount of negative people impact. In starting her own business, Laurel recognized the frustration and confusion happening when small business owners were starting to hire teams. All of a sudden, the focus moved from their business “zone of genius” to the unknown of human resources management. “I wanted to alleviate the pain and frustration of these small business owners – especially women in business” To help them minimize the risk of costly fines and penalties by learning to “LEAD with their HEART, but ACT with their HEAD.” www.laurelrutledge.com https://www.instagram.com/laurel.k.rutledge https://www.instagram.com/the.resource.bylkr/ https://www.facebook.com/therutledgeperspective https://www.facebook.com/theresourcebylkr   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business. Let's be honest here – the idea of motherhood doesn't always match the reality. Too many women have the professional wind knocked out of them after having their first child and realizing, “I can't keep going the way I was before.” That was certainly the case for my guest on this week's episode of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Raquel Kelley was killing it in her career as a producer for E! Entertainment. All-nighters and red carpets were her thing…pre-baby that is. Raquel had a plan for her life, until babies turned her life upside down. Through a cross-country move, postpartum depression, and a complete career rehaul – motherhood changed everything in Raquel's life. But this isn't a sad story, because as Raquel says, “Sometimes, you have to crumble before you can be built back up.” This episode is a must listen for every mom who thought they had it all figured out, until their little bundle of joy arrived!   About the Guest: Raquel Kelley began her career at E! Entertainment on Live! From the Red Carpet. While looking glamourous from the outside, her knack for pulling back the curtain on what really happens behind the scenes started here. Over the next decade Raquel climbed the ranks at NBCUniversal to become a producer on the hit show Fashion Police. Inspired by Joan Rivers, who despite being eighty-years-old could out-run, outwit, and out-cuss the entire cast and crew, Raquel wanted a comical creative outlet for herself. While going through the wedding planning process, she created I Guess I Do, a blog focusing on the funny, relatable stories behind the pretty pictures. Due to the success of her blog, Raquel became the LA expert for Conde Nast at BRIDES Magazine, a writer for Running with Heels Magazine, as well as Featured Blogger for The Huffington Post. After having her first child, she was then asked to contribute to HuffPost Parents where she was a top contributor and her articles were featured internationally. Raquel then had two children under two who served her up some major humble pie and made pulling all-nighters before awards shows and working with Joan look like a cake walk. But as she has always done, Raquel is onto her next project and is ready to pull back the curtain on her hardest job-to-date: Motherhood.   Check out MOMGUL at: Podcast: http://bit.ly/momgulpodcast Website: www.momgul.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/momgul/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/momgulofficial LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/momgul Personal Site: www.raquelkelley.com     About the Host: Janice Scholl helps moms navigate the money and career transitions that come with the different stages of motherhood through her work as coach, speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of The Money, Career & Motherhood Podcast. Have you ever heard the phrase start with the end in mind? For most of us I think the end parenting goal is to grow our children into happy, well-adjusted, self-sufficient adults. But when my guest Kelly Nault was a college counselor many of the young adults she met were anything but. And that lack of self-confidence that came from feelings of insufficiency for those students could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Kelly and I talk about the importance of going back to the basics with our kids – teaching the life skills everyone needs to know to become independent, not just the fun extracurriculars many families are focused on in today's world. We also talk about the unique challenges of parenting a strong-willed child, and how to channel your strong-willed child's need for control into the attributes we want our kids to exhibit as adults.   About the Guest: Kelly Nault is an award-winning parenting author, recovering people pleaser & creator of the SMART Mom Path. Twenty-four years ago, Kelly struggled with a strong-willed child... whose SUPERPOWER was finding ALL her child discipline loopholes. Then...she got help (plus, her master's and pre-doctoral in counselling, too). Instead of believing positive discipline, or attachment parenting was THE answer, she created a customizable SMART Mom Path... which helps dedicated moms raise a respectful child, but WITHOUT mom burnout, nor breaking their child's spirit. Kelly's had the honour of speaking to over 1,000,000 moms as a parenting spokesperson and has been featured in publications such as Today's Parenting magazine. Her award-winning book is called, When You're About to Go Off the Deep End... Don't Take Your Kids With You. I hear time and time again from women who are not comfortable with the world financial planning, but who want to learn. Research shows that despite growth in income by women in recent years, many remain less confident in their finances than men. Sometimes women still leave the financial planning activities for their families to their spouse, but it's so important for both men and women, husbands and wives, to be involved in the financial planning for their families. Men and women often think about long term life plans differently, and the most successful family financial plans incorporate both. In today's episode, I'm talking with Gaea Verneris, Financial Advisor and Owner of Legacy One Financial about the importance of women being involved in their family's planning process, as well as ways women can start learning about financial planning without getting overwhelmed by the tons of opinions available online. We're most likely to find our next job opportunity or client through our existing network, but growing and cultivating professional relationships in the time of COVID is challenging. That's why I'm interviewing Janice Porter, LinkedIn strategist, networking coach, and host of the Relationships Rule Podcast to teach us how to develop relationships, not just make connections, through LinkedIn. If you've got limited time to grow your network, hate mixers and professional events, or are limited in making new connections due to COVID, this episode is for you. In this episode, Janice Porter referenced the book, “The Power of Human Connection: How Relationship Marketing is Changing the Way People Succeed.”   About the Guest: Janice began her career as a teacher, was a corporate trainer and has now been in business for herself for several years.  She found her niche coaching and training business professionals to network at a mastery level and turn their connections into new business. For Janice, it's all about relationships! First and foremost is her family – she is very proud of her two daughters, and appreciates the support of her husband through all that she does.  Having an innate curiosity, she has leveraged that into building business relationships and teaches others how to do the same.  Connecting people is a skill that Janice uses, when needed – and only when she feels that it will be managed most professionally - as she holds her relationships very dearly. Her passion is working with people who want to build their businesses through relationship marketing and networking – and she does that using online and offline strategies. LinkedIn training is a huge part of Janice's business.  She believes anyone in business or looking for a new position, needs to have a professional LinkedIn profile, and that LinkedIn is a powerful, under-utilized online platform for attracting new clients, new referral partners, or being found by recruiters. Staying connected, and nurturing relationships comes next – and Janice shows clients how to implement a Tangible Touch follow-up system with clients, prospects, and associates to stay in front of them, while at the same time celebrating and appreciating them on a consistent basis. Janice really values the friendships and business relationships she makes and when she meets someone new is always thinking: “How may I support you?”. You can listen to Janice on her Relationships Rule Podcast on iTunes, Sticher, and most other podcast platforms. I talk with Laura about what it was like when her family grew by six children in less than five years, and how letting go of what others thought of her was a requirement to create the family life where she, her husband, and children can thrive.   About the Guest: My name is Laura Hernandez. My husband, Tony, and I are raising our ten amazing children in the Dallas area. In the past four and a half years we have added six new children to our family... three biologically and three through adoption. Going from four to ten kids was hard work. And, on top of having a large family, we are also not your "typical" family. We have three kiddos in public school, we are homeschooling five kids, and - with three kiddos having special needs - we have over 20 appointments weekly. I read many books on homeschooling schedules, large family logistics, and family dynamics; but I found over and over again that nothing that was already out there was fully relevant to our family! I had to figure out what worked for US and I had to do it myself. Books didn't have the perfect answers. How could we manage all of our logistics and have-tos and make time to intentionally instill the ideals that our family values?  It took me years to develop systems and life hacks to keep our family running and organized. But after creating systems that helped our family run smoothly, it reduced my daily workload and my house became a place of peace... yes, even with 10 kids!  Out of these years of hard work, Mama Systems was born. I want to save other Mamas the pains I went through to figure it out on my own. I want to bring more peace to their homes by coaching them through ideas, schedules, incentives, chores, and delegating.  Learn more at mamasystems.net, or follow me on Instagram or Facebook @mamasystems.   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business. Every mother out there right now is trying to make decisions when all of the options on the table are less than ideal between home, work, and school. While a probability impact matrix is used regularly in business and project management, we're talking about how it's an excellent tool to use in our personal lives, because it helps moms identify where to focus their energy and resources when there's many “what if” scenarios on the table.    Download visuals of the tools used in these two episodes plus other decision making tips here.   About the Host: Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business.
