Today I am joined by therapist, Johanna Lynn. We discuss the form of therapy she does, which explores epigenetics and unresolved family trauma in order to understand how it affects generations to come. She walks me through how to uncover where my unresolved anxiety may be coming from and how to put a stop to passing that down to my grandchildren. Johanna then discusses what self-regulation is and how to bring it into practice when you are feeling triggered. The information she provides really helps to open your eyes and see that your “issues” may not actually be yours, and there is an opportunity to heal them. This was such a fascinating episode, and I can't wait for you to listen! In this episode: [1:55] Johanna shares her story. [5:42] Johanna explains how her style of therapy works with looking at how you were loved. [8:46] Breaking generational patterns so we don't pass the trauma down to our children. [10:44] Johanna walks Lesa through uncovering where her anxiety comes from. [14:28] Johanna gives an example of healing generational incomplete or unprocessed grief or trauma. [17:20] What is self regulation? [20:45] How do you bring self regulation and awareness into practice? [24:12] What is one thing listeners could do to start uncovering what generational things may be coming up for themselves. Key Takeaways:  [18:06] When you are searching for a therapist or counselor, make sure that they are  self regulated. A lot of therapists get into this work to sort out their own stuff and they end up passing it along to their clients. [21:12] When you have gone through your own self regulation work, you are able to trust yourself more, and not give yourself away for connection. You have more boundaries, are more grounded, and have a better idea of who you want to be instead of having the environment around you squeeze you into something you've learned in your family. [24:52] The more you know your family history, the more well equipped you can be with your own healing. Quotes:  “The idea that how we were loved as a child imprints how we show up to love and, even how we navigate separation. And so for me, it was such a time to learn when everything was so raw and so vulnerable. It really allowed me to be more humble and take a look at things with a fresh perspective.” - Johanna Lynn “How do you help yourself self regulate? You clear out your influences of the past. You start to understand - Ooh, that's my great grandma's anxiety. And that's the lens I've been looking at my decisions and my relationships through. This is how my body has been responding, but gosh, maybe it's not even mine.” - Johanna Lynn "It's a little bit like unpacking your trunk before we're able to  fully go on that vacation. We've got to make space for the new stuff that we want to welcome in. And we don't recognize what our blind spots are. They're still a part of us.” - Johanna Lynn Guest Bio:  Johanna has been connected to the world of separation and divorce for 15 years, originally due to her personal situation, then as a systemic therapist focusing on restoring relationships. Have you ever said something to your partner and thought, “I sound like my father,” or, “That's something my mother would say.” Epigenetics tells us that we tend to pick up tendencies and recurring issues that we heard and experienced in our families of origin — especially with our parents. Therapist Johanna Lynn breaks down the importance of examining our family lines, how our current relationship problems could be the product of past conditioning, and what we can do about it. Tune in to this episode: Dropping 'The Story' - Understanding Intergenerational Influences on Relationships with Johanna Lynn Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Understand the influence of past generations.  By exploring our ancestors' relationships and environments, we can uncover clues to our own patterns and behaviors. ✔️ Look at repeating relationship issues.  Repeating arguments, boundary issues, communication problems, and people-pleasing tendencies are some common family issues that need to be examined.  ✔️ Map out your three-generation genogram.  Doing this can help you identify and understand how certain traits or behaviors have been passed down through your family lineage. ✔️ Practice self-awareness and acceptance.  Once you become aware of your family conditioning and how it has influenced you, you can now work on accessing and embracing your authentic self. ✔️ Heal through connection.  Openness and vulnerability gives you a chance to improve family dynamics and foster a deeper relationship with your loved ones. --------------- Johanna Lynn is a highly trained systemic therapist who offers resolutions for long-standing issues to participants in online classes with a focus on dismantling family patterns, restoring relationships, and cultivating resilient boundaries. Do you have a feeling that your actions don’t belong to you because they make no sense when you look at the evidence of your life but still, you keep experiencing them over and over again? This is exactly what the fascinating field of Epigenetics explores. In this compelling interview, Johanna Lynn, Canadian, founder of The Family Imprint Institute, explains what seems unexplainable. She gives us clear and simple examples of how to investigate our family history in ways that lead us toward healing. “Epigenetics helps you get closer to the clarity of what’s right for you” instead of repeating patterns that don’t fit in your life and dreams. These include emotions, behavior, thoughts, and even diseases. One of the most interesting ideas she shared was what she calls the “myth of forgiveness.” Johanna believes that many times, forgiveness falls flat and doesn’t help with finding a resolution. This certainly resonated with me but I had never found the right language to explain why forgiving someone seemed to not be enough sometimes. It may make no sense to you, but then again, this is what this podcast is all about: to provide different perspectives so that we can expand our views on human behavior. Are we preprogrammed with more than our physical attributes from our parents?  Are we programmed to behave in certain ways too?  This week on the podcast,  I'm speaking with Johanna Lynn, founder of the Family Imprint Institute.  Johanna helps people understand how their background, their parents' backgrounds and even their grandparents may be influencing their behavior now.  Johanna says, "The good news about epigenetics is that you can release how you hold the past within. One of the most amazing aspects of the brain is that it is changeable. Neuroplasticity gives us the proof we need to know that the brain can overcome early or inherited negative epigenetic changes. In this brief introduction, Johanna explains how we may be bringing things forward into our own lives from our past relationships that are unresolved.  We talk about healing therapy and how epigenetics focuses on the facts of past relationships not the stories.  We also discuss how the background noise and stress that you may be unknowingly carrying around with you may be impacting your biochemistry.  Johanna provides clients with a geneogram, and then experiential exercises that help them find understanding and freedom from their past.  She works with clients 1:1, in workshops, and with in-person events when possible.  We discuss how past experiences of stress and anxiety may be even more prevalent right now during the pandemic.  For more on Johanna Lynn go to: www.johannalynn.ca Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/johannalynn.ca/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_family_imprint_institute/

Most of what we are doing comes from our subconscious programming that is largely influenced by our family patterns. Your lineage could be a great indicator of your susceptibility to being betrayed, or being a betrayer, and it is only by understanding it that you can correct your patterns and move forward. Johanna Lynn is the founder of the Family Imprint Institute and helps her clients resolve painful patterns that can live on in generations as if on repeat. Your unconscious loyalty to a parent, or your ancestral alarm clock, could be having a major impact on the way you make your decisions and your ability to find happiness.  We tend to paint our partner with the same brush of what we didn't get enough of as a child, and the way you are triggered in a relationship can help you understand the greater forces at play. Invisible factors that you have inherited play a major role in how you make decisions about your life and relationships. Johanna is here to explain exactly how you can take control of those patterns so you can keep the good and get rid of the rest.  Are you ready to be real about your lineage and put your pain to bed? Share what you learned in this episode in the comments on the episode page.    In This Episode Recognizing the invisible factors that play into how you make decisions Why you shouldn't jump back into a relationship too soon after your betrayal  The importance of giving your child equal access to each parent What to do if you are noticing narcissistic behavior in yourself or your partner Digging into the impact your family lineage could be having on your relationship   Quotes “They say 70% of what goes on in a marriage has to do with each other's family of origin. But I can tell you, the more years I am in this work, the more I am convinced its a lot more like 99%.” (5:46) “Until we’ve really recognized, ‘aha, this was the part I brought into the relationship that kind of exploded in front of my face’, were less likely to recreate that in the next relationship.” (11:02) “We’re doing this not for the ex, were doing this for our children. Children do best with equal access to both parents, and the last thing we want is our children to be on our side against their own father. This is a huge determinant to kids and amplifies the likelihood that they will show up in a similar relationship.” (22:33) “Betrayal doesn't have to be the end of your story; perhaps it is the start of a brand new book, with all kinds of new experiences. Meet Johanna Lynn who has 20 years experience in resolving inherited family patterns and is the founder of The Family Imprint Institute. A former clinical hypnotherapist she focuses now on "Epigenetics".  Ask Yourself:  Have you ever had difficulty trying to explain why you feel a certain way, have unexplained sadness, or depression? Do you have self destructive behavior or continually see the same results in failed relationships? Are you dealing with chronic illness? Some of this could be indicators for inherited family trauma. And this is the focus of my podcast with Johanna. Our genes and our family history play such a vital role in how we view or see things, whether we intend to be a certain way or not. We have an imprint in our genetic code and its up to us individually to understand it and change it if we wish to change from generation to generation. The science behind it is fascinating and Johanna's voice will have you wanting to sit in her chair divulging your family history and your own life experiences.  Also check out Johanna's website prior to our discussion. https://johannalynn.ca/

Johanna Lynn is the founder of The Family Imprint Institute, an international private practice in which Johanna helps others resolve inherited family patterns that may be presenting themselves in ways that are physically or emotionally challenging. Johanna and I dive into what it has taken for her to build a thriving practice based on the hard work she herself has done, as well as how important it is for all of us to consider the patterns we may be seeing in our own lives due to our history with various relationships. This week we are talking to therapist Johanna Lynn who specializes in inter-generational trauma and family inherited trauma. Johanna has been working as a therapist for the past 20 years and brings immense experience and knowledge to the podcast. We discuss how we are very much organized by the experiences of our families, which in turn has an impact on what we carry forward from our past and into our relationships today. Terri gets vulnerable about a common argument her and her husband get into and how its interconnected with her history and something she lacked growing up. We discuss the most common things parents come to Johanna for and we talk about the type of impact relationships between partners can have on the children they are raising.  We also discuss navigating personal feelings and challenges in a separation and divorce and how to separate those so the kids can have access to both parents. Johanna also gives tips on parents challenged by their children's behaviours and how the behaviours could be a reflection of our own childhood's unresolved needs. The new science of epigenetics and inherited family trauma shows us that often what we struggle most with inside our relationships, health challenges, habitual patterns or our success often lives in our family’s experiences. *In This Episode* * Johanna's Website ( https://johannalynn.ca/ ) * Connect with Johanna on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/johannalynn.ca/ ) * It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1101980389/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?creative=9325&creativeASIN=1101980389&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&linkId=6572217ac508f2a5c236fc1a27d5adb1&tag=wescoatrapro-20 ) , Mark Wolynn * Dani Shapiro ( https://www.amazon.com/Dani-Shapiro/e/B000AP9218/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1 ) Trauma Therapist | 2.0. a community for new trauma therapists.
