“Something that really bothered me,” says Sascha Mayer, Co-founder and CEO of Mamava, “was the invisibility of this human function that many of our population deals with.” As a new, breastfeeding mother, Sascha found herself struggling to balance a busy job with a milk pumping schedule. It's a cumbersome, time-consuming, and emotionally demanding process, requiring privacy that isn't afforded by the average bathroom stall. Already a successful designer, she co-founded Mamava, which today is over 3,500 freestanding lactation suites across the United States, as well as an accompanying app showing where to find them. Moms go everywhere, and being a mission-oriented service, Mamava is determined to follow by appearing in schools, hospitals, and, of course, office buildings. Their mission is the north star that continues to guide the business. More relevant than ever in a post-pandemic era, the suites provide a safe, sanitary space for women to not only feed, but take their time doing what Sascha calls “an invisible third job.” It's not something one would consider when they were designing a facility if they hadn't done it themselves, and so it also helps new mothers feel seen. August is National Breastfeeding Month, and we're celebrating Mamava and the supportive resources they provide new moms, as well as what's next for this incredible brand. Quotes “Like all great entrepreneurial stories, my business came from personal experience and wanting to solve a problem.”(5:35-5:41 | Sascha) “One of the challenges and the greatest things about Mamava that I don't think we were honestly prepared for is that moms go everywhere. So the solution is needed everywhere. And because we're mission-oriented, we say ‘yes' everywhere.”(13:21-13:36 | Sascha) “I firmly believe that when you put your ‘why' and your mission first, that the bottom line escalates and follows.” (31:02-31:10 | Lindsay) “Mission is just good business. Happy New Year! This week, Learning Life is talking innovation for moms with Mamava co-founder Sascha Mayer. A certified B corp, Mamava was founded in 2013 by Mayer and Christine Dodson, now COO. Mamava has over 2000 lactation pods across the country, providing mothers privacy and security while breastfeeding or pumping, as well as digital resources, community, and advocacy. Sascha began her career as a staffer for then-congressman Bernie Sanders after graduating from UVM. Moving on to working for a design firm, Sascha, a new mother at the time, frequently traveled to meet clients or go to conventions and realized there were no places to pump privately. The first Mamava pod was launched in the Burlington Airport in 2013, built with design in mind, a product to solve a real-world problem and bring the conversation out in the open. Episode 10: Ashley Mann—Pinegrove PR Ashley Mann had an aha moment sitting in a Mamava nursing pod at the SEA-TAC airport. She had an infant, was flying back and forth from her home in Spokane and was pregnant with her second child. Looking around the pod, a pump strapped to her chest, she decided that every step she took after that moment would be toward creating a career that worked for her, and for her family. Along her path, she'd explored a lot of roads (public relations, dental hygiene, even a mobile tanning salon), but she always came back to PR. She launched her company in the midst of the pandemic and has focused her efforts on clients who get it and who fill her soul with purpose: female-founded tech startups (#femtech) and wellness. Ashley is proof that you can try a lot of things—that you should try a lot of things—to get to where you want to be, and that this choice, her current company, isn't necessarily the last stop. We talk about career, motherhood, boundaries, making room, and honing your clients to fit your life—not the other way around. What's with mom guilt, anyway? As women, we are made to think that we should have this mothering stuff down to a science and that it should all come naturally. This holds especially true with breastfeeding. There are so many things that can go wrong and yet we are expected to know what we are doing even if we've never done it before. Hence the guilt, right? According to the CDC, as many as four out of five moms start out breastfeeding, but only half are breastfeeding by six months of age and just a third are still breastfeeding at the 12-month mark. According to research conducted by lactation-pod company Mamava, 42 percent of moms end up supplementing with formula at some point in their baby's first year. So what's the deal? Is breastfeeding something that mommas can actually succeed at? At what point is it ok to call it quits? Is formula really that bad?Our guest today is Florida-based IBCLC Oneida Segura. In addition to being a lactation consultant, Oneida is also a Registered Nurse and has worked with new mothers in a breastfeeding, health, and education capacity for decades. She has three girls, one beautiful grandbaby boy, and she is proud to service the Spanish-speaking community in South Florida as well as breastfeeding moms around the country.  We hope you love today's episode all about formula feeding!

Walmart's Tennille Webb joins Chris Walton and Anne Mezzenga to discuss how she worked with Mamava to make Walmart the first retailer to roll out lactation pods in over 100 U.S. stores. A journey that began with Tennille seeing Mamava pods within an airport ended with her cold calling Mamava herself and then working with the powers that be at Walmart to convince them to overhaul their capital remodel program and to replace Walmart's existing mother's rooms with more efficient, movable, and cost-effective pods, so that all Walmart customers and associates could continue to have more safe and clean places to feed their babies. The Mamava pods are flexible lactation space solutions linked into a smart platform that empowers easy wayfinding, autonomous access for moms. Moms can open them with Mamava’s free app — and when finished, return to shopping. When Sascha Mayer had her first baby, she realized a common problem for working moms: not having a good place to breastfeed or pump for their baby. Especially when she travelled for work, Mayer had difficulty finding a dignified place to use a breast pump and often found herself pumping in the bathroom. In talking with other moms, she realized she wasn't alone and that the problem was rampant across the country. Mayer kept expecting someone else to solve the problem, but when no one did, she and her colleague Christine Dodson accepted the challenge. Using their backgrounds in design, they created Mamava, a portable lactation suite. Every aspect of the Mamava pod is designed with mothers in mind. Mayer is a strong believer that empathy leads to great design. From her own experience, she was able to design a place that appeals to mothers while meeting their needs and providing a dignified place to feed their babies. Mamava suites are now in airports, conference centers, arenas and offices around the world. Every aspect of their design is intentional to not only provide a great experience for users but also to stand out and normalize breastfeeding. The curved walls are deliberate to make the pod look different than anything else in the area and provide a feminine touch. Users unlock the pod via an app and enter the clean area that holds benches, a table and chargers, plus an overhead fan to regulate temperature. The pod is designed to be comfortable and convenient without being a place where people want to spend all their time so other mothers can have a turn. By thinking through the entire experience, even down to the type of non-porous materials that are easy to clean, Mayer built a product that resonates with mothers. She has been surprised by how many customers quickly become advocates for the brand and even take pictures of themselves inside the pods and share them on social media. Design thinking and empathy play a huge role in customer experience. By putting herself in customers' shoes, thinking of her own experience and working through every detail, Mayer was able to help build a transformative company and a great experience for busy moms.
