What is Thread? Jonathan Hui, Principal Software Engineer at Google and VP of Technology at Thread Group, joins Ryan Chacon on the IoT For All Podcast to discuss the Thread network protocol. They cover how Thread works, the differences between Thread and Wi-Fi, how Thread is improving the smart home, how Thread works with Matter, when not to use Thread, and the IoT challenges that Thread is solving. Jonathan Hui is a principal software engineer at Google, where he is responsible for Thread implementation in products and is maintainer of OpenThread released by Google. Prior to Google, he was a principal engineer at Cisco, where he built some of the world's largest IPv6 mesh networks for urban-scale, enterprise, and utility applications. He delivered the world's first commercial 6LoWPAN networks at Arch Rock before its acquisition by Cisco. Jonathan has also been deeply involved in standards bodies (IETF, IEEE, Thread, and Wi-SUN) and co-authored foundational specifications related to IPv6 in low-power wireless networks. He is also a co-inventor on more than 175 USPTO issued patents. Jonathan has a BS in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MS and a PhD in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. An entrepreneur from a young age, Stephanie Cartin walked away from her corporate gig to launch Socialfly, a leading social-first digital and influencer agency based in New York City. Within seven years, Socialfly has blossomed to over 30 full-time employees, helping over 200 brands including the Girl Scouts, Samsung SmartThings, Nest Fragrances, 20th Century Fox and Univision. Stephanie is the Co-Author of "Like, Love, Follow: The Entreprenista's Guide to Using Social Media To Grow Your Business,” and the Co-Host of the Entreprenista Podcast. She has appeared and been featured on Bloomberg, Forbes, entrepreneur.com, Refinery29, and CheddarTV. Stephanie is also a recent recipient of the SmartCEO Brava award, which recognizes the top female CEOs in New York and a Stevie Award for Women Run Workplace of the Year. On the personal side of things, Stephanie Cartin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at the age of 27 and it has been tough for her to deal with both the symptoms and the treatments. However, dealing with infertility was something else entirely. She always knew that she wanted to be a mom but had no idea she would have to deal with infertility, especially as early as age 30. She is a successful business owner and has a supportive husband, but no amount of success or support prepared her for the often-shocking, painful, and confusing infertility journey she has been on. In this episode, we discuss: Her physically challenging and emotional journey into motherhood. Advocating for herself medically. Finding a village of women on Facebook dealing with the same medical and fertility issues she was. How she and her business partner hope to impact the business community with The Entreprenista League. Her approach to work/life integration. How she shows up as her best self and overcomes self-doubt. LG's latest flagship home cinema solution can produce sharp 90-inch images when placed 2.2 inches (5.6 centimeters) from the wall, or 120 inches at a distance of 7.2 inches (18.3 centimeters). The HU915QE plays movies and streaming content in 4K HDR, using HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping to analyze and adjust image brightness every single frame. With LG's webOS smart platform onboard, the HU915QE lets users watch all their favorite shows from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, and Apple TV without an additional device. They can also wirelessly stream content via Screen Mirroring, Apple AirPlay2, and Bluetooth. On top of that, its built-in 2.2 Channel, 40-watt speaker system enhances the viewing experience with strong, rich audio. Users can also connect up to two LG Bluetooth speakers at once. LG CineBeam 4K laser projector (model HU915QE) with the latest UST technology will be available in the first half of 2022. No pricing available but Value Electronics is advertising it for $6000 to $6500.. 5 mistakes everyone makes with Sonos soundbars Got a Sonos Beam or Arc? Don't make these classic mistakes Full article here… Mistake 1: ignoring Trueplay room calibration Mistake 2: leaving the TV's sound output in PCM Mistake 3: not trying the speech enhancement feature Mistake 4: not playing with the 'Loudness' feature Mistake 5: missing the new height adjustment feature HOW SAMSUNG'S SMARTTHINGS IS THINKING ABOUT MATTER AND THE FUTURE OF THE SMART HOME The smart home is about to change. Soon, you won't have to choose a smart light bulb or door lock just because it works with your smart speaker. Instead, you'll be able to buy a smart device, bring it home, and it will work with any voice assistant or app you choose. At least, that's the promise behind Matter, a new standard created by Samsung, Google, Apple, and Amazon. Most importantly, you won't be locked into the platform you chose. If you decide you want to switch to SmartThings from Google Home, or go with Amazon Alexa over Apple HomeKit, any Matter-enabled devices can come with you. Full article here… Founded 10 years ago on Kickstarter, SmartThings is one of the only standalone consumer smart home hubs from the early days of the DIY smart home boom that's still alive and kicking. The SmartThings hub is one of the few consumer-level devices with multiple radios in it, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Z-Wave, allowing it to control a much wider range of smart home devices. It also works with cloud-to-cloud software services and is one of the most compatible smart home platforms. There's voice assistant support, too, for both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant as well as Samsung's Bixby. It was acquired by Samsung in 2014. Since the acquisition, Samsung has moved away from manufacturing any SmartThings hardware, offloading both the standalone hub and many of the sensors to device maker Aeotec. The company has said it's focusing all efforts on the SmartThings app and supporting Samsung's connected products through software. The following are questions to Mark Benson, the newly appointed Head of SmartThings US, Samsung's home automation arm What is the future for the SmartThings hub with Matter on the horizon? The standalone SmartThings V3 Hub and the Aeotec SmartThings Hub will be updated to support Matter when it launches in the fall. SmartThings is getting integrated more deeply across the Samsung portfolio, with SmartThings Hub software built into select 2022 Samsung Smart TVs, Smart Monitors, and Family Hub refrigerators. These devices will also allow users to connect a wide variety of existing smart home devices, as they will be updated to get Matter as a controller support, as the new standard becomes available. We also plan to support Matter as a controller on our SmartThings Hub V2. This will enable our existing users to connect and control Matter devices. Will the built-in hubs have any low-power wireless radios, as the standalone hubs do? What about Thread? Low-power wireless protocols are a crucial part of the Matter standard and will definitely come to the Samsung SmartThings products with built-in hub functionality. More details to come later on actual implementation of Thread technology, but Thread's really important to us. Communication with Zigbee devices will be possible through the SmartThings Dongle, allowing connectivity to a wide range of smart home devices. You say Samsung is integrating Matter as a controller — does this mean that Samsung's connected devices (washing machines, robot vacuums, TVs, etc.) will not be exposed to other Matter controllers (such as Amazon Alexa or Apple HomeKit)? This year, we will focus our efforts on bringing Matter as a controller to multiple surfaces across the Samsung portfolio. This means most 2022 Samsung Smart TVs, Smart Monitors, and Family Hub refrigerators. SmartThings Hubs will not act as a Matter bridge, so non-Matter devices will not be bridged or exposed to other Matter controllers. That said, Matter-enabled SmartThings hubs will continue to support existing devices and protocols (e.g. Zigbee, Z-Wave) to provide SmartThings customers with flexible connectivity options. Where do you see Matter taking SmartThings? With connectivity becoming more standardized, where SmartThings competes in the future will be different. The user experience is the competitive space that will differentiate platforms and companies — things around use cases in the home, cooking, taking care of your pets, managing energy usage, setting the lighting just right, and locking the doors at night. Having those things just work and be simple and easy to understand so that users can control their homes and manage their homes well is why we're excited about Matter.

Sengled The Smart Health Monitoring Light bulb claims to read heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs through entirely non-invasive sensors. It uses a radar sensor instead of a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, meaning it can read through materials and detect more subtleties. Ideally, the higher sensitivity would allow for the light bulbs to detect different people, see movement through textiles and other complexities of off-skin health tracking. According to Sengled, a collection of Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs connect via Bluetooth mesh to create a virtual map in your home, relying on several points of “view” for complete health tracking. To be clear, the light bulb doesn't have a camera or anything built in. It can't see or record you, just sense you. Google has been making substantial investments in its push to make Google Assistant the powerhouse of the Android smartphone. But the company has also been expanding its reach within the smart home through partnerships with popular household appliance manufacturers. Through its relationship with Samsung, Google Assistant now lives on Samsung TVs and can control Samsung SmartThings devices. Google is also developing support for Matter, the initiative that will make a new generation of smart home devices compatible with multiple voice assistants including Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, and more. By tapping into the existing smart home networks of high-profile brands, Google is scaling the presence of the Assistant. And this week, it is sticking to that strategy with a new multi-year deal with GE Appliances to bring its services to GE smart home products. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rainagency/message

MJS 024 Aaron Frost This episode can double as a My JavaScript Story and a My Angular Story and features Aaron Frost. Aaron has been on both JavaScript Jabber and Adventures in Angular. He has been a principal engineer for four years and recently organized his fourth NG-Conf. How did you get into programming? Aaron was working as a loan officer when he decided he needed a new career. He went to work at an accounting support phone center. There he discovered he was good at Sequel. He tried out for the QA team; the UA automation made sense to him. He became a senior QA and in 2010 jumped to working in development full time. He knew JavaScript; which made everyone wanted to hire him. He learned JQuery too. What was it about JavaScript that really got you excited about it? In Utah when he was working for a company, he had never learned JavaScript; he was told he had to learn jQuery to do browser extensions. The first night he learned jQuery he decided he loved the language. He stuck with it for three to four months. After that, he learned actual JavaScript. He explains that it just “fits in his head,” and made him feel well equipped and powerful. How do you get to Angular? He worked for a big, local corporation in Utah with powerful developers. The JavaScript community was strong there. They used Backbone and one day he emailed the developers. He suggested they Angular. One of the developers asked Aaron to help with the conversion. They were writing less code in Angular than in Backbone. It saved time. Sometime after that, his friend Kip Lawrence suggested that they go to an Angular Conference. When they looked up conferences they couldn’t find any. They decided to start their own Angular conference after that. How do you become a GDE? There is a GDE app where you nominate yourself. In order to be picked, you have to meet a lot of criteria. You have to answer a lot of questions. There are things they want you to have done to prove you stand out and are a leader in the community. They want more than someone who is just smart. They want people who have presented at conferences, made open source contributions, written books, etc. What else have you done in JavaScript or Angular? One of the very first projects Aaron did is one that he considers one of the coolest. He built a browser extension for his twin brother’s real estate website that solved a captcha. He then marketed it to other people. He believes it is one of the most fun problems to solve. What are you working on these days? Aaron has a side project, which is a remote communication app for remote workers to use. He is working on how to make the NG-Conf bigger and better each year. He is also spending time being a dad. Is there an overarching thing you’ve learned over the last 7 or so years of programming? The thing that keeps recurring is that there is a need for engineers to focus on solving problems for users and less on having perfect code. He has noticed that developers make decisions to try to make perfect code that can sink a company. Developers should be more business focused than tech problems. It is more responsible for making a business profitable. Solve problems for the user first and don’t try to replace a language that’s working. Aaron Frost On today’s episode of My Angular Story we have special guest Aaron Frost. This episode might as well be both, a My Angular Story as well as a My Javascript story. Aaron has worked with us on JS Jabber and was a panelist for Adventures in Angular. You also may know him from NG Conf, the original Angular Conference. Stay tune to hear his story! Getting Started Before Aaron got involved with Javascript or Angular, he worked as a loan officer, and he wasn’t the best at it. Luckily his job exposed him to small bits of SQL. Aaron goes to say that SQL “was like speaking English”. In 2010 he shifted into development. At the time, most web developers hated Javascript, so anytime they could pin Javascript work on him they would. Aaron loved it. College Dropout Aaron decided to go to college to learn programing, mainly as a means to an end. His goal was primarily to get a job. After finding the job, he dropped out of classes. Aaron says that he was confused by why he was still in school considering he had the job and at any rate, Aaron had learned how to teach himself. Between Stack Overflow and podcasts and Youtube, Aaron has all the resources he needed. Getting Into Work. Aaron talks about his time working with Kynetx, writing a language called Kynetx Rule Language. Kynetx was a platform where developers could create web browser plugins and it would work across the platforms. Aaron talks about the lack of frameworks then, leaving mainly only jQuery. And Then, Angular… In one of the corporations Aaron worked for, they used a framework called Backbone. Five Hundred programmers all prescribed Backbone for their work, but Aaron nudged someone in the stack team to look into Angular. It was a no brainer, Angular allowed to get the job done in much less code. They adopted it and got proficient. Conferences “Oyee! We should make one!” Aaron and Kipp Laurence decided that after they were unable to find an Angular conference to goto online that “Oyee! We should make one!” Reluctantly Aaron agreed and afterwards had someone from Google on board to send a whole team to the conference. Google Developers Experts Aaron is a GDE. He talks a bit about what that process what like and how it’s changed. He talks about what Google looks for in a GDE and clears any misconception that a GDE is about people who contribute to the community and are natural evangelists. Aaron vs Captchas Aaron talks about how one of his first projects will always be his favorite. His brother worked in real estate and used a particular website for work. The website had an annoying Captcha that had to be filled out pretty frequently. His brother asked Aaron to attempt to create a way to bypass the Captchas. Aaron talks about how at first he thought it was impossible, but after contemplating using a canvas and some basic calculations, he was able to put together a web browser extension to handle the task. They marketed the tool to others that used the website. What He Has Learned Aaron says that there is a theme that is reoccurring for him. Aaron talks about how often programmers and developers spend their efforts “chasing the pendulum” instead of focusing on solving the issues that the company needs them to solve. Programmers should worry less with how cool their patterns are or if they are using the latest Frameworks, and more about getting the job done. Today I share with you some things I have (or will in the future) pick up. Fitbit If you're starting out and you want to track your activity, I love fitbits. I've owned a few and currently wear a blaze. My favorite is the fitbit One, but if you just want to get your toe into the water the Fitbit Zip clocks in at $49 Withings Body - Body Composition Wi-Fi Scale I've tried every wi-fi enable scale except the one from Withings. I got the Wi-Things Body Composition Scale (normally $129, I got in on Black Friday for $77). I can't comment on it as I have told myself I can't open it up until Christmas (you have to leave something to open). Contigo AUTOSEAL Kangaroo Water Bottle with Storage Compartment This is a cool 24 ounce water bottle with a (what appears to be) a non spillable seal top. That's not the cool thing. There is a side pocket for keys, cards, etc. That is what caught my eye. Great for those times at the gym and you're not comfortable leaving things in your locket. Best thing is it's only $10 Work Out With Alexa From Amazon The Amazon Alexa system. What is that? Alexa is a cloud based app that can be access via the Echo, Tap, and Dot. Alexa answers questions, reads audiobooks and the news, reports traffic and weather, gives info on local businesses, provides sports scores and schedules, and more. One of my favorite things is telling Alexa to put an item on my grocery (or to-do ) list. Controls lights, switches, and thermostats with compatible WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Insteon, Nest, and ecobee smart home devices. So I ordered the Amazon Echo Dot ($49) and I tie it to a speaker I already have. (The Amazon Echo $179 has a kick butt built in speaker). You can read my buyers guide at www.alexacast.com/buyersguide so I have it tied into my Fitbit (and I can ask it for an update). If I'm doing good, Alexa give me praise. If I'm behind schedule she encourages me. In the Amazon world there are no apps (OK there are, but they are called "Skills"). One of the skills is a 7 minute workout. This is completely free. I believe I could have started some music first, then started the workout and had both. Remember if you're going to be shopping, please visit www.logicalloss.com/support and use our Amazon link (it doesn't cost you anything extra, and we get a small commission)
