Listed as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN Red List, The African Lion is one of the most threatened species in the world. The population of this regal carnivore has dropped drastically from over 200,000 individuals a century ago to approximately 24,000 today. Almost half of this population is found outside protected areas, often in human-dominated landscapes. Rampant habitat loss and fragmentation, coupled with a sharp decline in prey abundance across their range is a recipe for human-wildlife conflict. Lions are often persecuted in retaliation to livestock degradation by these big cats. This has unfortunate consequences for Africa's vultures which often prey on livestock carcasses poisoned by farmers, intending to murder problematic lions. Additionally, lions are increasingly falling victim to the illegal wildlife trade to meet the demand for wildlife products in China and Vietnam, following the clamp down on tiger poaching in Asia. More specifically in southern Africa, lions are often captured for the horrific canned lion industry. In this episode, I interview Alayne Oriol Cotterill, the CEO of Lion Landscapes, which is one of the leading organizations working towards lion conservation. We cover their various projects, such as their Ruaha Carnivore Program, Community Co-Op, and Collaring for Coexistence programs. We also talk about the “controversial” role of trophy hunting in wildlife conservation in Africa. If you enjoyed this podcast, do not forget to share and subscribe! I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 5th of February, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Numbers 12:3: “(Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)” Then we go to verse 8 when God says:”I speak with him face to face,…” “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,…” 1 Peter 5:6We do not have to defend ourselves. Father God does that for those who remain humble in His sight. Some of us are so defensive that we do not give the Lord a chance to operate on our behalf. We really need to stand back and let Him defend us and justify our cause because He will. He loves us. He did it for Moses. Moses' brother, Aaron, and sister, Miriam, said, “Do you think Moses is the only man that hears from God?” Moses didn't say a word in defence. God stepped in. He said, “I speak to prophets through visions, but My servant, Moses, I speak to him face to face.” CH Spurgeon, the great Baptist preacher, shared a beautiful illustration I will never forget. He said, “God is the one who defends us.” He said, “It is like a little boy who goes down to the zoo every day after school and sits on a bench opposite the cage of a huge male African Lion, walking up and down. He loves that lion and as he sits there and watches him, some naughty boys come along, pick up stones and start throwing stones at this big, huge male lion. Because he loves the lion so much, the little boy stands in between the lion and these naughty boys, and he is taking the stones that they are trying to throw at the lion.” Spurgeon says, “All that little boy has to do is to open the gate and let the lion out.”Oh my dear friend, why are we always trying to defend the Lord when He wants to defend us? Just open the gate and let the lion out!Jesus bless you and goodbye.
Hear about travel to Gujarat, India as the Amateur Traveler talks again to James Schomburgk about festivals, temples, and Asiatic lions. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-gujarat/ James says, "Gujarat is in the far western central of northern India. Pakistan is its western border. And the southern border is the Arabian Sea. It's actually close to some of the big-hitting states in terms of tourism, but it's a very different geographically. It's very different feel to the rest of India. If you're looking for something that's remote. If you're looking for something that is you'll be, you'll be certainly be treated like royalty, because everybody will be looking at you bizarrely because they rarely see any tourists. The beauty of it is I think, for me, the wildlife, the wildlife is was quite mind blowing. And I know I've spoken to so many people in India, a lot of people associate India with tigers, but what they have in Gujarat is lions, leopards, hyena, and wolf, animals that people would be a bit surprised that are in India. It was the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi so it's also got a lot of history." James starts us in the city of Bhavnagar. He stayed in the Nilambag Palace with the current Maharaja. Half the palace has been turned into a hotel. He takes us then to one of the most holy sites in Jainism at Shatrunjaya. You can climb the 3,300 steps past a number of temples to a set of ornate temples at the top that are 900 years old. The view from the top of the mountain is also spectacular. If you don't have the fitness to climb the steps you can get carried up on a litter. From there James directs us to Sasan Gir National Park where you can see the last remaining Asiatic Lions in India. The Asiatic Lion is a close cousin of the African Lion. In addition to lions, they saw the nilgai which are the largest Asian antelope, and the dangerous mugger crocodile. Gir National Park is closed from 16 June to 15 October every year. The next stop is Junagadh which is known for its old fort (the name literally translates to "Old Fort"). There are also some spectacular mausoleums in Junagadh which were built in the late 1800s in an Indo-Islamic style. They have elaborate carvings and minarets with exterior spiral staircases. But the most memorable part of James' visit to Junagadh was the festival of Bhavnath Mela where throngs of people would climb the nearby holy hill of Girnar wearing their best sari... or in the case of some Naga (holy men) wearing nothing at all. Somnath temple is a sacred Hindu site that has been built and rebuilt over the centuries after it fell victim to invading Muslim armies from the West. Gujarat cuisine is vegetarian and you won't find alcohol either for religious regions so James and his traveling companion enjoyed a visit to the tiny state of Diu which used to be a Portuguese possession. Here you could see the blending of the Indian and Portuguese cultures... and get a cheap beer. They enjoyed a visit to a fishing village and a pick-up game of cricket with locals. The last stop on our itinerary is Blackbuck National Park for more wildlife viewing including the eponymous Blackbuck antelope, striped hyena, and Indian wolf. James highly recommends a stay in the luxurious Blackbuck Safari Lodge. After you have seen the well-known sites of India, explore some of its hidden gems like Gujarat.

Finally Anuj shares his experience sighting over 20 lions in his 4 days at the Gir National park. This ranges from fully grown males, to a young couple and mother and cubs. He also discusses the nearby Devaliya sanctuary where lions and leopards are kept in closed environment. We also touch upon places in the vicinity that one could include as a part of an extended itinerary - including Sasan Gir, Swaminath temple, Diu and Junagadh. Mvemba is joined by Major General Michael J. Turley, the Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard. Turley discusses the contribution of the Utah National Guard to the execution of United States foreign security assistance at a much-reduced cost and reduced time expenditure, and the participation of the Guard in African Lion, the largest US military exercise in Africa. He further describes the importance of the Utah National Guard's 20-year partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco, and how national guards' units help build strong civil societies to support Africa's transition from its colonial past and neocolonialism to democratic societies. They delve into the different components of training support the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces have received from the Utah National Guard, including humanitarian mine assistance, special forces capability training, the US Department of Defense's military sales process, and civil emergency service training. Turley identifies language and religious barriers as the most significant challenges the Utah National Guard has faced in a longstanding partnership with the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces and highlights traditional strong family values as a bridge between the two partners.

Before the Covid 19 outbreak, the African tourism industry employed 24.6 million people across the continent, representing 6.8% of the total employment in the continent. However, this industry, as well as our wildlife, is facing possible extinction primarily from poaching. Since 1960, the black rhino population is down by 97.6%, approximately 1000 mountain gorillas remain and as many as 35,000 elephants are killed each year. The African Lion is the second largest living big cat after the tiger and the sound of its roar can be heard as far as 8 km away. However, its population decreased by 43% in 21 years and its regionally extinct in 15 African countries with as few as 23,000 left today This is why it is crucial to conserve our wildlife. Our guest Kaddu K Sebunya, CEO of the African Wildlife Foundation, joined us this week to discuss matters of conservation in the continent. How can Africa embrace development while preserving its wildlife? We touch on key issues like poaching, conservation efforts, Africa's criminal justice systems to fight illegal wildlife trade while promoting this coexistence among others. Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya has 25 years of Government relations, conservation and international development experience. He has distinguished himself in the industry as a leader at all levels—from community level engagement through the highest levels of government in Africa, Europe, China, and the Americas. He is one of the most visible and respected voices for wildlife, wild lands, conservation, and sustainable development on the continent. He is honored to advise the Pan-African Institutions and several African states on implementation of the African Union Vision 2063 and has become a frequent and sought-after speaker in Africa, Europe, China, and the United States.
An animal rights groups has branded a zoo in southern Ontario the worst in North America for its practices. The organization said African Lion Safari 's elephants especially are being mistreated.
In a world inundated with captive bred African lions, why are we losing wild lions in Africa? With successful foreign bans against import of lion trophy and products, airline embargos, and bans of lions in circuses and performing entities - combined with the global push for USFW to list African Lions as endangered under the ESA, will we turn the tide for lions? Or will the illegal trade and pressure from moneyed private interests in S. Africa, the NRA, SCI and DSC to obfuscate collective data on real wild lion numbers and their decline? The African Lion's genetic diversity is collapsing; isolated populations reaching the tipping point toward extinction. The immensity of this catastrophe is simply unacceptable. To fail to use all the science, data and tools that we have at our fingertips to work out a global plan to protect African lions in Africa, would deal a disastrous blow in a long list of failures to keep natural populations of large predators alive in a human-centric world.

Friday March 13, 2015 Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt made world history by taking the lead and announcing the immediate ban of the import and export of African Lion trophies and body parts. The S. African Gov't and professional hunting bodies around the world prefer the euphemism ‘captive hunts' to ‘canned', but Donalea Patman and Ian Michler, and the proponents against Canned Hunting say Captive Hunting is still Canned Hunting. The facts are, lions and other wildlife, are being bred in captivity to be killed in captivity. If an animal bred for the bullet cannot be imported into a hunter's home nation, then perhaps we can roar across the world that profiteering through the industrialized farming of wildlife and canned hunting is not conservation, and brings under question whether that type of industry and business model is an effectual human relationship to wildlife and our wild world.
