We are in the middle of a revolution in the infrastructure of modernity. The plumbing of the 20th-century economy – the fossil fuel infrastructure that is in everything we do – is being ripped up. New, clean energy networks are being laid down. It is the most remarkable transformation in the economic substructure in history. And yet…for all the celebration of the transformation in demand around climate solutions, infrastructure is fundamentally a supply-side puzzle. And that means commodities. Even as we shake free from the shackles of oil, our net-zero future becomes shackled to other critical minerals instead. Copper. Lithium. Cobalt. Time to ride another supply-side supercycle. But is the world ready? Can we mine what we need both quickly and sustainably? This episode's guest is the perfect person to ask. Abel Martins Alexandre spent a career in commodity financing, as VP at Natixis, Group Treasurer at Rio Tinto, and now MD and Head of Infrastructure, Energy and Industrials at Lloyds Bank. An expert both in the mining space and ESG finance – including a stint on the Financial Markets Standards Board – Abel has a sharp insider's eye on these under-discussed markets. His view is not to be missed! "… for the discussions around chips and the scarcity of chips, which is which is true, there's a broader conversation about the scarcity of metals, which I think is going to hit all of us, I suppose more in a more meaningful way in the next the next couple of years… " "Well, the best advice I can give… I'm borrowing from many others, many great people I've met in my career, … as the motto says, if we fail to prepare, we are preparing to fail. And that's very, very important … Always to know, to prepare well, to have a plan and to be resilient around a plan, which is to adapt very, very quickly." "… because the risk to physical infrastructure is real, because supply chain disruptions are happening and also because actually even in the context of higher inflation, which many people have not witnessed in their in their careers, you need to think about what it means for the business …" REFERENCES: https://www.lloydsbank.com/business/corporate-banking/banking-with-us/our-people/specialist-heads/abel-martins-alexandre.html https://www.linkedin.com/in/abel-martins-alexandre/?originalSubdomain=uk Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables in association with the London Business School Energy Alumni Club. There are certain skills and traits that are always going to have top priority, but what are treasury leaders looking for in the next crop of professionals? Today, we revisit episode 33 for a re-run episode with Adam Richford, Director of Treasury & Investor Relations at Renewi plc. When Adam last joined the show, we discussed his journey into the industry, work/life balance, automation and his treasury recruitment processes. As Adam re-joins, we look at how his role has changed since COVID and the benefits of networking, plus Adam provides more invaluable advice for budding Group Treasurers. Adam joined Renewi, Europe's leading Recycler, in 2016. Renewi is a key actor in the creation of the circular economy. It processes 12m tonnes of waste a year, diverting an industry leading 67% of these materials to recycling and avoiding 3m tonnes of carbon as a result. Back in 2016, he financed the €0.5B Class 1 reverse takeover of the closest competitor, which included a rights issue, placing, and underwritten bank financing. Over the 7 years since then Adam and the team have created an award-winning centralised treasury function and been at the forefront of green and sustainable finance. Since 2019, Adam has extended beyond the treasury function by focusing on leading investor relations in addition to Treasury and Insurance. This has included a secondary listing in Amsterdam in 2020, an increase in sell side coverage from 3 equity analysts to 9, additional sustainability-focused investors joining the register and a share price increase from 180p to 850p. Prior to Renewi, Adam spent two years at Gala Coral Group, managing a high yield debt structure transaction towards the reverse takeover of Ladbrokes plc. He spent the previous 9 years leading the treasury activities of GE Real Estate Europe, supporting over 20 billion dollars of M&A transactions. Adam began his career with EY, helping to build the turnaround and working capital management practice before joining the telco Energis, followed by a stint at a Private Equity Firm, Kelso Place Asset Management. Adam left Durham University with a BA in Economics in 1997 before gaining an FCA in Chartered Accountancy in 2000. He later embarked on a number of ACT qualifications. On the podcast we discussed… Adam's previous job roles and what they entailed What initially attracted Adam to treasury The structure of the treasury team at GE Capital Finding work/life balance while studying for the MCT How the structure of treasury has changed and adapted since Adam first joined The existing role that automation plays within the treasury industry Adam's ethos behind treasury recruitment Challenges that Adam has faced in his current role as Group Treasurer at Renewi plc The benefits of networking How to manage a treasury team remotely and COVID challenges What he looks for when recruiting Advice for someone who aspires to become a Group Treasurer You can connect with Adam Richford on LinkedIn. This episode features an interview with Paolo Tonucci. Paolo is CFO at Marex, a diversified global financial services platform. Paolo has been with Marex since 2018, having joined as COO and becoming CFO in 2020. Prior to Marex, he served as Group Treasurer at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He has also worked as Head of Funding and Liquidity at Barclays Bank in London and spent 12 years as Global Treasurer for Lehman Brothers. On this episode, Paolo discusses how to reduce your vulnerability to currency hedging, staying on top of the latest and greatest in fintech platforms, and how to effectively secure accounts against emerging cyber threats.Quotes*“We're always pushing. I think if you stand still, you are going backwards. There's new products and new platforms, new languages emerging all the time. So I don't think that you can sit on a stack and say, ‘That's the perfect technology stack and I'm never going to have to modify it.' We're always looking to bring in new products. We'll upgrade them, make them quicker and faster. And the pipeline of potential opportunities in terms of technology developments or new technology from third parties is enormous. There's always more demand than there is capacity to develop or to bring in those technologies. But absolutely, you've got to move forward.”*“You need to know your own business and you need to invest in knowing your own activities and your own currency exposures, which is more difficult than people imagine. Just because sometimes the processing and the accounting systems are not set up to handle multi currency or provide that. But that's where you have to invest. So again, it's a function of having the right systems and being able to extract the right data.”*”What do you need? You need to have commercial skills. You need to think of yourself as, I think, an owner of the business, as well as being a guardian of the assets and guardian of the organization. So, you need to extend the skills that you have because it used to be perhaps a bit more compartmentalized. And you could be highly skilled in the basics of finance, because you need to know more about treasury and payments and technology and treasury, and you need to control understanding, which perhaps that wasn't so important in the past, so that you are anticipating areas of risks. So it's a really broad set of skills.”*“I think the investment office always has an eye on liquidity. So I think somewhere between the chief investment officer and the treasurer, you will find that that exists. I sort of feel like depending on the organization, your treasurer is your chief liquidity officer. You know, it may not be the title they have, but it is certainly the sort of centerpiece of what I think they do.”Time Stamps*[12:35] Segment: Cash Crossroads*[24:55] Segment: The Playbook*[31:31] Segment: Report From the Future*[36:24] Segment: Quick HitsSponsorThe Invisible Vault is powered by the team at Kyriba, the global leader in cloud treasury and finance solutions, empowering CFOs and their teams to transform how they activate liquidity as a dynamic, real-time vehicle for growth and value creation.
