In a special edition of the GZERO podcast, we're diving into our expectations for the topsy-turvy year ahead. The war in Ukraine is heading into a stalemate and possible partition. Israel's invasion of Gaza has amplified region-wide tensions that threaten to spill over into an even wider, even more disastrous, even ghastlier conflict. And in the United States, the presidential election threatens to rip apart the feeble tendrils holding together American democracy.   All those trends and more topped Eurasia Group's annual Top Risks project for 2024, which takes the view from 30,000 feet to summarize the most dangerous and looming unknowns in the coming year. Everything from out-of-control AI to China's slow-rolling economy made this year's list.   GZERO Publisher Evan Solomon sat down with Eurasia Group Founder and President Ian Bremmer and Chairman Cliff Kupchan to work through their list of Top Risks for 2024 alongside Susan Glasser, staff writer at The New Yorker and co-author of "The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021"; Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, CEO & President of the International Peace Institute and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Marietje Schaake, International Policy Fellow, Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. The big throughline this year? Events spiral out of control even against the wishes of major players. Whether it's possible escalation between Israel and Iranian proxies, Chinese retaliation to the result of the Taiwanese election, or central banks finding themselves squeezed into a corner by persistent inflation, the sheer number of moving parts presents a risk in and of itself.   Take a deep dive with the panel in our full discussion, recorded live on January 8.

On Inside Geneva this week: part five of our series marking the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Imogen Foulkes talks to Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein, who served as UN Human Rights Commissioner from 2014 to 2018. He became the first Asian, Muslim and Arab to hold the position. But did he plan a career in human rights from an early age?"No, I was far too immature and delinquent to be thinking lofty ideas and profound thoughts," he said.  But two years in the former Yugoslavia during the conflict there focused his mind. "The senselessness of it all, there's nothing that can justify killing, or destruction like that. Nothing at all," he thinks. When he took the job as UN human rights commissioner, he became famous for his tough approach. "I knew from my experience in the former Yugoslavia, that if the UN secretariat believed, I think mistakenly, that it's in the friends business, it produces catastrophic results. The UN is not there to become friendly with the member states."He spoke out wherever he saw injustice or abuse, from Myanmar, to Libya, or ISIS, and even world leaders."Someone asked me, possibly you, asked me about Donald Trump, and I said ‘yes, I think he's dangerous.' And that became the headline out of the press conference," he said.  Today, his commitment to universal human rights remains firm.  "What we're aiming at is to create a better human being. That's what we're trying to do with the human rights agenda, to improve ourselves and our conduct. To speak out and use non-violent means to protest conditions which are fundamentally unjust and unfair, and who can argue with that?"Listen to the full episode to find out more about Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein's life and career.  Please sign up for our newsletter for Swiss Democracy. Episode 394: Bomb In the Bathroom Window (Part 2 of Operation Desert Storm) This week Host Dave Bledsoe sets his crosshairs on a valuable asset, meaning he found a bar where they haven't heard of him. (Yet) On the show this week we come back with Part Two of Operation Desert, the shooty part! Don't worry we would never glorify violence, in fact we find it entirely disturbing. (Except on television, that is cool.) Along the way we learn why Dave doesn't watch horror movies. (He's a big fraidy cat!) Then we dive right into everything that happened once the bombs started dropping. (Bernie Shaw hid under a table!) We then discuss the feared Iraqi SCUD missile. (You can just call it Al!) And of course, who could forget the famous Patriot Missile! (We suppose the Iraqis would like to.) We talk ground combat from the ill fated Khafji Offensive all the way to the Highway of Death! (They had such descriptive names in this war!) Finally, we talk about homecoming, parades and how short a time the discounts at Denny's lasted. (Dave is bitter he didn't get one!) We spent some time how quickly everyone got over liking George HW Bush, and went right back to thinking he was useless. Finally, we talk about consequences and how karma is a real bitch. Our Sponsor this week is Nate's Night Vision, shining a light on savings! We open the show with footage of the luckiest man in Iraq and close with Stephen R. Don't privilege any particular group or country,” he recalls.  And how risky is calling countries to account?  “Rather than you worry about how they may react to your statements, they ought to be worrying about what you might be saying about them,” answers Zeid.In this episode of our Inside Geneva podcast: Geneva-based humanitarian aid agencies are soul searching as they stand accused of institutional racism. For 10 years, between 2005 and 2014, the ‘Great Arab Revolt Project' (GARP) investigated the remains of the 1916-1918 Arab Revolt in southern Jordan, from Ma'an to Mudawwara. Expecting initially to survey and excavate the mainly ruinous Hejaz Railway stations for perhaps three years, events soon changed this to a 10-year project. The stations were investigated, but it was the unexpected discovery of conflict landscapes in-between the stations and farther out in the desert that required more investigation and was added to by the discovery of over 100 pre-Revolt construction-era camps built by and for the labour gangs who constructed the railway. Discoveries included defensive earthwork ‘karakolls', stone-built forts, machine-gun positions, Ottoman army campsites, overnight raiding camps for Rolls Royce armoured cars, and even ephemeral Royal Air Force landing grounds. GARP research fleshed out the Revolt in this region, uncovered unsuspected landscapes, and added a new dimension to Jordanian heritage. About the speaker: Nicholas J Saunders is Emeritus Professor of Material Culture in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at Bristol University. His research focuses on the material culture, landscapes and cultural memories of twentieth and twenty-first century conflict in Europe and the Middle East. Fieldwork in France, Belgium, Bosnia, Slovenia and Jordan is supplemented by ongoing research into the material culture of the Chinese Labour Corps on the Western Front. Between 2006 and 2014 he was co-director of the Great Arab Revolt Project (GARP) in southern Jordan – investigating the 1916-1918 Arab Revolt along the Hejaz Railway from Ma'an to Mudawwara – in co-operation with Al Hussein bin Talal University. His publications include: Trench Art: Materialities and Memories of War (2003), Modern Conflict and the Senses (2017), Desert Insurgency: T.E. Lawrence, Archaeology and the Arab Revolt (2020), and Conflict Landscapes (2021). He is co-editor of the Routledge series ‘Material Culture and Modern Conflict'. About the discussant: Bakr Khazer Almajali is a distinguished Jordanian historian. Originally born in Al-Qasr in the Al Karak governorate, he is a graduate of the Royal Military College at Mutah University. He continued his service in the Jordanian Army in prominent roles until 1996, including as Director of the Martyrs' Memorial and the Jordanian Military Museum. He has subsequently worked as a university researcher, consultant and advisor at the Royal Hashemite Court, including on projects to renovate the Historical Museum in Ma'an (‘The Founder' King Abdullah I Palace) and the Martyr's Memorial. He holds a PhD from the University of New Hampshire (USA) for his thesis The Renaissance and Independence Movements in the Arab Mashreq from 1850 AD to 1925 AD. He has published extensively on Islamic and Jordanian history, the Hashemite Royal Family, the Jordanian Arab Army, and the Great Arab Revolt. He has won many prizes and recognition for his scholarly work and achievements, notably for his documentary scripts for radio and television. About the chair: Robert Bewley is Chair of CBRL's Board. He is the Co-founder and former Director of the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa project (from 2015-2020) at the University of Oxford. He is the Director of the Aerial Archaeology in Jordan project and in 2018 was able to set up the Aerial Archaeology in Oman project. Bob received his PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cambridge and was an undergraduate at Manchester University studying Ancient History and Archaeology. The United Nations was created in 1945, following the devastation of World War II. The opening lines of its founding charter commit its signatories to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”. However, with more than 40 active conflicts around the world today, we ask: has the United Nations failed to live up to its aim of ensuring international peace and security? In this episode, hosts Hazami Barmada and Mary Robinson (former President of Ireland, former UN High-Commissioner For Human Rights and Chair of The Elders) are joined by fellow Elder, veteran UN diplomat and current President of the International Peace Institute, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein. Together, we examine the role and function of the UN's most influential body - the Security Council. We dive into the Council's functions and powers–and unpack its structural weaknesses. On the podcast, we'll discuss reforms that could help the UN better prevent conflict and meet today's global threats. We answer questions like: How does the veto power of some nations stand in the way of accountability? How can the structure of the UN Security Council better represent the power structures of the world today? How do we achieve a world with no conflict? -- This special series of Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media, in collaboration with The Elders. Human rights have rarely been at greater risk. President Trump and other world leaders are conspicuously silent about torture, the suppression of press freedom and threats to democracy. For the first time in many decades, the U.S. is led by a President who routinely praises foreign dictators, and rarely speaks up for democratic institutions. From the imprisonment of journalists in Turkey and Egypt, widespread torture and killings in Syria, to probable genocide in Myanmar and the murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi, the worst human rights offenders are able to act with complete impunity. Today's heads of government are "morally weak, shortsighted, mediocre, and no longer willing or able to defend human rights," says this week's "How Do We Fix It?" guest, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the former U.N. Human Rights chief. We find out why it wasn't always this way.In this episode, we look at the need for greater media coverage of human rights, and learn more about some of the world's bravest defenders of the oppressed, including U.N. humanitarian staff who are on the ground in some of the world's most dangerous and difficult places. They fled their homes in Myanmar's Rakhine state and sought shelter in Bangladesh, following a military clearance operation 12 months ago that's been likened to a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by former UN human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein.
