We've lost connection with part of what the Bible teaches about sin: that God gets angry at sin. And I'm here to tell you that losing that is a bad thing. In fact, I'll go this far: you need an angry God. If you don't believe in an angry God, a really angry God who hates sin and is going to punish it, you're impoverishing yourself. You're taking away all sorts of hope and humility and love. Isaiah 64 and 65 show us 1) God's anger is not like our anger usually is, 2) you need an angry God if you're going to live in hope, 3) you need an angry God if you're going to live in humility, and 4) you need an angry God if you're going to understand how loved you are. Reformation Day, celebrated on October 31st, marks one of the most transformative moments in church history — the day Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517. In today's prayer and devotional, we reflect on the fact that though Luther never sought to divide the Church, his bold stand for truth and his devotion to Scripture became a catalyst for reformation and renewal across the Christian world. As Lynette Kittle reflects, Luther wasn’t a rebel or revolutionary — he was a truth seeker who rediscovered the heart of the Gospel: we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8). His translation of the Bible into German opened the Word of God to everyday people, making Scripture accessible to all who longed to know God personally. Today, we commemorate Reformation Day not only as a historic event but as a call to continue valuing God’s Word above all else. Through faith, God approved the lives of many who trusted Him without seeing the outcome. The world was created by the word of God and understood through faith. This chapter recounts people like Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and others who courageously followed God. They obeyed even when the path was unclear, knowing that God rewards those who seek Him and looking forward to promises that had not yet been fulfilled. Some conquered kingdoms, while others endured suffering and death; yet all were honored for their unwavering faith. They did not receive the final promise, for God planned something better. Together with believers in Jesus, they will be made complete in what God has prepared. We are called to live by faith, trusting in what we cannot yet see. Faith gives us confidence in God's promises and anchors our hope. Those who came before us lived this way. They obeyed God, even when the path was uncertain. We must follow the example of faithful men and women, walking courageously through trials with our sights set on heaven. We will not be perfect, but God will reward our consistent deference to His glory. Some of us will experience great victories, while others will endure tragic loss in this life. What unites us is a deep trust in God. He has reserved an eternal home for His people, where all will be made to live free from suffering.  Mighty God, we thank You for the men and women who lived by faith and trusted You completely. They followed Your will, believed Your promises, and endured many trials with unwavering courage. Help us develop hearts like theirs, ready to obey even when the outcome is unclear. Teach us to walk by faith, knowing You will reward those who seek You. We commit to standing strong in the face of trials, opposition, and all challenges accompanying this life. May our faith grow deeper, as we calibrate our lives to long for the great resurrection and eternity in heaven with You.   Thought Questions: How do you define the word “faith”? "Marriage First" Makes Your Life Unstable At the end of my life, I want to hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."  That's the goal that keeps me grounded—and I know many of you share that desire. But here's a hard truth I've learned through years of walking with couples: when our marriage or family becomes our first priority instead of God, everything starts to crumble. Why "Family First" Doesn't Work I once had a conversation with someone I deeply love who said, "You think God has to be first—but I think family should be first." His heart was sincere, but the fruit of that mindset showed otherwise.  When family is first, everything depends on emotions—how your spouse treats you, how the kids behave, whether things feel peaceful at home. That's not stability. That's shifting sand. We see the effects of this all around us. Divorce rates hover around 50%. Even pastors and counselors admit they rarely had a healthy marriage modeled for them.  Most people are doing their best, but without a biblical foundation, their "best" can't hold up when life gets hard. The Biblical Order That Brings Stability Scripture gives us the right order: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. And love your neighbor as yourself." — Mark 12:30–31 That means I love my first neighbor—my spouse—because I love God. Why do I forgive in marriage? Because God is first.Why do I love my husband well? Because God is first.Why do I serve my family with joy? Because God is first. When we build our lives on that rock, we become steady—even when the storms hit.  Illness, loss, special needs, mental health struggles—these things shake every marriage. But when God comes first, everything else finds its right place. Feelings Aren't God—God's Word Is We live in a "follow your feelings" culture. If you don't feel in love anymore, the world says, find someone new. But feelings aren't truth. God's Word is. You're serving the King of Kings, and your marriage is part of that assignment. Like the Roman soldiers in Gladiator fought for the glory of Rome; as believers, we live for the glory of God. That means our choices in marriage—our words, our intimacy, our tone—should all be for His glory. Believers are called to die to ourselves. That includes our moods and even our sexual desires.  Scripture is clear: "Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time... then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you." — 1 Corinthians 7:5 That's not about coercion or obligation—it's about love expressed God's way.  When I choose intimacy with my husband, it's not because I feel like it every time. It's because I love God. And when I embrace His design with joy, the byproduct is a beautiful, connected marriage. Marriage as a Path to Holiness Author Gary Thomas famously asked, "What if marriage is meant to make us holy, not happy?" The amazing thing is—when we pursue holiness, happiness often follows. That's why we teach the Delight Your Marriage Framework: Husbands need to have respect, admiration, and wholehearted intimacy. Wives need to feel safe, known, and wholeheartedly cherished. We love our spouse in the way they receive love, not the way we prefer to give it. Because real love is about understanding and serving the other. The Power of God's Word to Transform David Wood—a former atheist and sociopath whose life was radically changed by Scripture. Final Thoughts If you have put your marriage above Jesus, it's not too late to turn it around. He is a safe person to put your trust in. You can trust His Word and His design. Seven loaves for thousands is never enough, and one loaf among twelve is not sufficient. Like the disciples, we find ourselves living in a world of scarcity—coming up short, not just with bread, but perhaps with strength, wisdom, patience, or hope. But Jesus invites us to look beyond the insufficiency of what we have—to beware the yeast that inflates and deceives, whether it's the power of religion or the ways of the world. He points to a deeper reality: The bread we need does not come from ourselves or our striving. The bread that truly sustains comes from heaven. Jesus is that bread—He alone is enough, and more than enough. When He gives of Himself, there is abundance: basketfuls left over, more than we could ever ask or imagine. So today, as we reflect on our own places of lack or need, we remember that the bread of life is given freely, not earned or purchased by our own efforts. The invitation is simply to partake, to rely on what God alone can provide. Each day, we come to Him for sustenance—for healing, for hope, for strength, for forgiveness—for Himself. Let's make it our prayer to seek the bread of life, not just for today's needs, but for our deepest hunger. Christ is enough for us, for our families, for our communities, and for the world. May we abide in what He gives—His own life, His own presence, His own abundance. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
