Alicia Duncan is the co-founder and principal designer of AR Interiors, a political and mental health advocate, and a devoted mom and stepmom to four.  Her life took an unexpected turn on October 21st, 2021 when her mother chose to end her life through Medical Assistance in Dying, also known as MAiD. Questioning the lawfulness of her death, Alicia and her sister sparked the first police investigation into a MAiD death in Canada, garnering international media attention. Since then, Alicia and her sister have become unwitting authorities on the subject of MAID, political advocates surrounding mental health, and are featured in the upcoming BBC documentary, “Better Off Dead?”Their opinions have been sought by the Canadian Parliament, as the country expands the availability of MAID, to include patients who are mentally ill. Tread Perilously's 1980s flashback month continues with an episode of Magnum P.I. called "Kiss of the Sabre." When Magnum is evicted from the guest house, he gets to know its new inhabitant: novice writer Betty Windom. Constantly suffering writer's block during her attempts to plot a tale of superspy Sebastian Sabre, she decides to butt into Magnum's latest case. Is a simple job verifying details of an insurance claim more than it seems? Magnum doesn't think so, but when Betty sees him nearly killed by a backhoe, it becomes clear things are not so cut-and-dry. And, maybe, it is the exact thing Sebastian Sabre needs. Erik immediately declares the episode to be a broadcast version of an Andy Sedaris movie. Another bevy of guest stars suggests the real reason he chose this episode. Justin's attempt to recall the premise of Magnum P.I. leads in strange directions. The pair doubt star Tom Selleck could have launched the Indiana Jones film series. They also evaluate Magnum's case and the Sabre story it inspired. Justin suggests a reason for the cast to play their regular parts and the characters in Betty's book. The first digression into Better Off Dead of 2025 occurs. Guest star Patrick Collins earns his name and Erik completely fails to create a Howard Cosell impression.

Happy New Year! While I know not everyone makes new year resolutions, at the end of every year I personally like to reflect on the previous year and, more importantly, correct course and find ways to succeed in the future. On this week's episode I have picked four movies in which regular people just like you and me are presented with unique opportunities and are able to seize the day. If the characters in these films can find success, so can you!First up is UHF (1989), starring Weird Al Yankovic. In UHF, George Newman (Yankovic) accepts a job as the station manager of Channel 62, a mostly forgotten UHF TV station that only broadcasts moldy reruns. Soon, Newman and his ragtag group of friends including roving reporter Pamela Finkelstein (Fran Drescher), janitor Stanley Spudowski (Michael Richards) and many others other lunatics, put together a series of original programs that appeal to viewers. While Newman's overactive imagination originally costs him his job and nearly his relationship with his girlfriend Teri (Victoria Jackson), it becomes an asset as Newman and his pals take Channel 62 to the top of the charts.Next up is The Secret of My Success (1987) starring Michael J. Fox and Helen Hunt. After his dream job in the big city falls through, Brantley Foster (Fox) is offered a job working in the mailroom of his uncle's mega-corporation. Before long, he takes over an empty office among the executives and adopted an alias, working two jobs at the same time. Things are complicated when Brantley pursues fellow executive Christy Wills (Hunt), who is sleeping with the boss (Brantley's uncle) while his wife, Brantley's Aunt Vera, can't keep her eyes (or hands) off of Brantley. Eventually, all of Brantley's hard work in the boardroom — and bedroom — pay off in this wacky comedy.My third pick is Better Off Dead (1985). After Lane Meyer's girlfriend Beth dumps him, he can barely find a reason to live. Meyer's friend Charles points out that Beth's new boyfriend Roy is an excellent skier, and if Lane could best him on the treacherous K12 course, he might be able to win her back. Meyer's twisty path to the slopes will teach him who he is, and more importantly, who is important to him. My final pick of the week is Revenge of the Nerds (1984). In this film, a group of nerds attending Adams College spend half the movie defending themselves from the jocks from Alpha Beta (who kicked the freshmen nerds out of their dorms after burning down their own frat house) but soon go on the offense after accepting who they are and celebrating their strengths… something we could all stand to do.In each of these films, regular people find themselves in unusual situations and, after looking inward, discover who they are and what they are made of. Knitting in Passing During Marta's visit, the kids turned the living room at my parents' into a craft room. Millie knit on the hat she's making for her dad. Riley worked on crochet hexagons for our matching blankets. Roc crocheted on a crab and eventually started a giraffe amigurumi and a baby hat. Riley taught Roc to make a crochet hexagon. Even Max & Garret got in on the action and did some drawing. One of the first afternoons, we were sitting at the bar at my parents' pool. Marta was sewing up a hole in Max's shirt, I was finishing some socks and Roc was crocheting his crab. Throughout the trip, Roc (age 12) was crocheting constantly- in the car, at the table, at the park, anytime he had a few free minutes. He was incredibly adept at chatting and keeping up with his pattern working in increases and decreases. We ended up going to 6 craft stores- Plymouth Harbor Knits, Michaels, Joann, The Craft Loft, Hobby Lobby, Gather Here. Roc also got a crochet kit at Dollar Tree (the same dinoaur my niece Aila bought earlier this summer). We had a campfire at my house one night. Roc, Millie and Hattie spent most of the night crafting in my studio. We visited my house after kayaking & ice cream one afternoon- Hattie also did a bit of knitting on my Musselburgh hat. I found a few dropped stitches the next time I picked it up but that's ok. Crafty Adventures Marta, Roc and I did some resin projects while they were visiting. Roc put resin in the bottom of a small wooden crate and then we worked together on a pumpkin lazy susan. Update on Mom: Mom had a couple good days while Marta was visiting. Grateful we were able to spend time together even when she couldn't leave the house. The sound of the boys laughing brought her joy. She had the catheter removed from her lung. Began having throat issues that worsened day after day. On Thursday 9/12 came for scans and chemo, but only had scans and then was admitted. She's had a whole slew of tests and so far they haven't found anything wrong which is good news, but we still need to get to the bottom of things. One bit of good news, she should be having an injection of filler into her paralyzed right vocal cord that will allow her voice to come back. This whole week has been a painful blur, starting with a scary injury I'm still recovering from--a scary injury that could have been much worse--and ending with this episode of Attack the Backlog about THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake. In some ways I feel lucky for picking this game before the injury happened because it was easy and short enough to still manage an episode in my compromised state, but, at the same time, that means I had to play THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD: Remake. You can probably already tell how I feel about the game, but if you really want to know, I guess you'll have to check out the show.

"Everlasting Love" Plenty of people have gone it alone in music--blues and folk musicians are well-acquainted with being on stage with just a handful of songs and acoustic guitar. But for a new wave artist back in the early '80s, it wasn't a common thing to be a one man band. And Howard Jones was exactly that. In an age where multiple-membered outfits like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode graced the stage, Jones took the old blues and folk formula and gave it a synthy twist. It was a huge gamble and it paid off rather well. Over the course of his winning career, the Southampton-born Jones has stacked his CV with highlight after highlight: from '83-'92 he crushed it, with 15 top 40 singles around the world. He's put out nearly twenty albums that have sold close to ten million copies, he played Live Aid, Amnesty International's Festival of Youth, and The Grammys. What else did Howard Jones do? Tons: he's played with Mark Knopfler, Mark King of Level 42, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, toured as a member of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, toured with OMD, the Barenaked Ladies and Eurythmics, had his music appear in Party of Five and movies like Better Off Dead and he joined the board of directors for the Featured Artists Coalition which was founded in 2009. Actress Liz Carr is best-known as Clarissa Mullery on BBC's Silent Witness, but is also a disability activist. She made the documentary Better Off Dead? that explored the debate around assisted suicide – issues she discussed this afternoon with Brendan.
