Fr. Mike reflects on how Isaiah's prophecies in chapters 49-50 point to the immediate reality of God's promise of redemption for Israel, as well as to the distant reality of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. In our reading of Ezekiel, we also learn how the glory of God departed from the temple, and how God's presence is often hidden from us as well. Today's readings are Isaiah 49-50, Ezekiel 10-11, and Proverbs 12:17-20. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Welcome to the opening discussion of this past week's thought-provoking salon on The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Though often labeled a children's book, The Little Prince, translated into over 500 languages and dialects, second only to the Bible, sparked a wide-ranging discussion that revealed its deeper, more political dimensions. In our discussion, Gaslit Nation listeners drew connections between the book's themes and the current tragedy and disinformation war on Gaza, while others reflected on the absurdity of adulthood depicted in the story. Our conversation touched on the divine feminine, the corrupting influence of institutional power, especially within the Catholic Church, and the existential weight behind Saint-Exupéry's deceptively simple prose. We began by exploring the historical context in which the book was written: a time of fractured resistance to fascism, eerily reminiscent of our own era. Just as the French Resistance struggled with internal divisions and the desperate need for leadership, so too does America today, caught between rising authoritarianism and a detached political establishment. Most amazingly, this conversation took place on July 31st: the 81st anniversary of Saint-Exupéry's death during a reconnaissance mission off the coast of Marseille. His little plane crashed into the sea, just two months before the liberation of Paris. Some Christians in Malaysia—ethnically Chinese or Indian believers—have freedom to practice their faith in Christ. But if an ethnic Malay person becomes a believer in Jesus, he or she will face intense Christian persecution. The Malaysian government sees ethnic Malay people as off limits for evangelism and holds them subject to Islamic Shariah law. “To be Malay is to be Muslim,” says Carter Gates, leader of VOM's international ministry work in Asia/Pacific. “Ethnic Malay's can't even [openly] say they are interested in learning more about Jesus.” As Carter meets with VOM's ministry partners, one shared key hindrances that keep Malays from following Christ and the questions he uses as he engages them in gospel conversation. One of those questions: are you ready to die for Jesus? Gates says he was challenged as he thought about evangelism in free nations versus in Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, China and other restricted areas and hostile nations. “This pastor is in a context where he knows what [sacrifice] means,” Carter says. “We should consider these costs in America too.” We'll also share an update on the court case over the forced disappearance of Pastor Raymond Koh in 2017. A verdict is expected in the case in November. Listen to what Susanna Koh shared during her first visit with VOM Radio about how she and her family struggled after her husband's abduction. She also shares how the Lord helped her to forgive those who persecuted her husband. Please pray for truth to be revealed through this legal process and pray for the Koh family as they await the verdict. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

It was 1863. Edwin stood on a railroad platform in Jersey City. He watched as a young man was forced by crowds against a train car. The man dangerously fell into the crevice between the train and the platform. The train started to move. Edwin reached down and, at the last minute, pulled the man to safety. The saved man was Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln. Robert later wrote that his rescuer’s “face was of course well known to me,” because Edwin Booth was a famous actor. In fact, he was the brother of another actor—John Wilkes Booth—who would assassinate the president two years later. This historical oddity illustrates a reality for us. We don’t choose the family we’re born into. Perhaps our siblings or parents made wrong choices. Maybe we’re the ones who’ve made a mess of everything. But the Bible tells of God’s family plan: “those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14). As His children, “we are [his] heirs” (v. 17). Amazingly, we’re invited to call him “Abba, Father” (v. 15). We may long wrestle with the dysfunctions of our earthly family. But we can take comfort that God has changed our spiritual heritage. He adopts us into His family. Most precious of all—He invites us to call him our Father.

It's very common for people, even those who want to live the Christian life, to feel they have to check their brains at the door if they're going to believe. Often, we hear this basic approach to the Bible: the gospels were written down after years of legends, so we don't really know how much of them are true. But let me give you a case that the Jesus the Bible shows you is historically reliable.  Here is the case in three stages: 1) if you look at what the gospels claim, you'll see they're not written as legends or fiction; they're either historical accounts or a deliberate hoax, 2) we now know now that all of the gospels were written within the lifetime of eyewitnesses, and 3) the same rules of historiography that are used on other documents of antiquity show the gospels to be trustworthy. This talk was given by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 4, 1994. Series: Redeemer Open Forums.  Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. In this episode, Aaron McManus and Erwin Raphael McManus sit down to reflect on their recent Mosaic gathering in New York and the upcoming launch of the Ghost Artifacts collection, developed with Arturo and Jess in Brooklyn. Diving into the journey of new believers, they share guidance on first steps after deciding to follow Jesus—like sharing your faith immediately, reading the Bible starting with John, praying throughout the day, and inviting God into your daily life. Erwin highlights how physical expressions like raising hands, kneeling, and baptism serve as outward symbols of inward transformation, stressing the importance of finding a church community that shapes you toward the life you want to live. They reflect on personal stories of declaring faith, the pitfalls of self-righteous communities, and the need to continually recommit to a vibrant relationship with Jesus at every stage of life. They close with encouragement to join the Mind Shift community, share the podcast, and look ahead to future episodes featuring a wider range of guests and themes.Join the Mind Shift community here: http://erwinmcmanus.com/mindshiftpodFollow On Socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@ErwinRaphaelMcManushttps://instagram.com/mindshiftpodhttps://instagram.com/erwinmcmanushttps://instagram.com/aaroncmcmanusJoin The Newsletter!https://erwinmcmanus.com/newsletter

In Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist, the sickly Oliver is born in a workhouse, an institution notorious for exploiting the poor. Orphaned at birth, the boy eventually runs away due to abusive treatment. Through an amazing set of “twists,” he learns he is heir to a sizable fortune. Dickens, who loved happy endings, ensured that everyone who harmed Oliver over the years either received justice or repented. His oppressors got what they deserved while Oliver “inherited the land.” If only life came with tidy endings like those scripted in a Dickens novel. In the Bible we read a song by a man who anticipated such a day—when justice is served and the oppressed “inherit the land” (Psalm 37:9). Though he experienced evil firsthand, the poet David urged patience. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him,” he wrote. “Do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes” (v. 7). He continued, “Those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land” (v. 9). Despite observing how the “wicked draw the sword” to “bring down the poor and needy” (v. 14), David trusted God to make things right (v. 15). Life is hard and often unfair. Yet we hear in the words of Jesus an echo from Psalm 37. “Blessed are the meek,” He said, “for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).

We've been redeemed to achieve — not for our own glory, but for the glory of the Lord, who empowers us to do all things by his grace.

Don't Waste the Great Gift of Influence (Formerly titled: Don't Waste Your Impact) It's easy to underestimate just how much weight your words, actions, and attitudes carry—especially in your marriage. But the truth is, your spouse is the person you impact most in this life. And that impact can either build up or break down. It can draw them closer to Jesus—or push them further away. Whether you're aware of it or not, you are influencing every day. The real question is: how are you using that influence? In today's episode, we're exploring what Scripture and research say about the power of marriage, how your smallest habits shape your legacy, and why taking your influence seriously could be one of the most important decisions you make—not just for your spouse, but for eternity. Why Your Marriage Holds the Greatest Influence in Your Life Research from the Holmes-Rahe Stress Scale confirms it: five of the top ten most stressful life events are marriage-related. Death of a spouse. Divorce. Separation. Reconciliation. Even getting married. All of these events shape us more than we realize—impacting not only our emotions but our physical health. That's why your role in your marriage is far from trivial. It's your greatest mission field. Beyond your spouse, your children are next in line for your influence. Their spiritual formation, character, and even understanding of Jesus may start with how they see you live. Influence Starts with the Smallest Seeds We often think influence must be grand—but it's the consistent, daily seeds that grow lasting fruit. Whether it's trying to put stubborn littles to bed while keeping a joyful attitude (“count it all joy when you face trials”), or sharing a genuine compliment with your spouse that communicates admiration or safety—these small acts build a legacy. The greatest impact comes through simple faithfulness: planting seeds of respect, encouragement, and love, again and again. Want to Be Effective? Influence with Soft Eyes and a Gentle Tone Influence is not control. It's not demanding. And it's certainly not harsh. If your heart is full of conviction, but your tone is sharp, your spouse may never hear your heart. Instead, they'll hear rejection, judgment, and intensity. That shuts hearts down. Instead, remember this: Soft Eyes Gentle Tone Slow Pace No, it's not an acronym yet—but it's a powerful practice. If it matters to you, slow down. Look at them with kindness. Speak with a spirit of gentleness. Because your delivery may determine whether your words are received—or rejected. Faith Isn't Meant to Stay Silent—So Stop Hiding It Somewhere along the way, many of us have absorbed the idea that faith is a purely private matter. But Scripture doesn't support that. Paul talks openly about his prayers, his tears, his awe at God's love. You don't need to boast—but you do need to be real. Share how you follow Jesus. Let your spouse and your kids see that He's not just a Sunday idea. He's your daily King. Character First. Ministry Second. The Bible is clear: if you can't manage your own household, how can you lead in the church? (1 Tim. 3, Titus 1) Your first ministry is your spouse. Your first testimony is how you treat them when no one is watching. Your first assignment is to steward the influence God has entrusted to you—in your tone, your time, and your tenderness. Don't Waste the Great Gift of Influence If you've ever caused your spouse to spend days mulling over a harsh word, you've influenced—for harm. That matters. God has given you the ability to heal and build up—or wound and tear down. We won't be perfect. But we must take our influence seriously. Let your words be seasoned with grace. Let your habits point to Jesus. Let your home be a place where His love is felt—because of you. Because when we stand before God, how we used our influence in marriage will matter. And your spouse's eternity may just be a little brighter because of your faithfulness. Final Thoughts Friend, your influence is real. And it's powerful. You don't have to be perfect to make a lasting impact—you just need to be faithful with the moments in front of you. One seed of kindness. One soft-eyed response. One patient, Spirit-led pause. These small choices shape hearts, build trust, and reflect the love of Jesus. So take heart. God has entrusted you with influence, not by accident, but for a purpose. And as you lean into Him and love your spouse with intention, you are planting seeds that can grow into something beautiful—something eternal.   Love, The Delight Your Marriage Team PS - Are you ready to take the next step in influencing your marriage for the better? I would not have considered leaving my wife, but hopelessness was making me accept the fact that we would continue to become more and more estranged until one or both of us died...[Now,] I KNOW that as intimacy grows between a husband and his wife, both are energized to do the work of the Kingdom, both shine brighter wherever they are.
