John catches up with English rock band The Libertines to discuss how they wrote and recorded their latest album ‘All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade'. The Libertines formed in 1997 and shot to fame with their debut album, 'Up the Bracket,' becoming pillars of the British indie/alternative resurgence of the early 2000s. Thirty years after their careers started, they have unveiled their fourth studio album, 'All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade,' primarily recorded at their studio, The Albion Rooms, in Margate, with producer Dimitri Tikovoï. Sitting down with frontmen Carl Barat and Peter Doherty, the pair discuss their song writing process from idea to finished album. As well as sharing exclusive insights into the evolution of the Libertines' recording process, we hear demos and ideas from their early days writing together up to recent studio time in Jamaica.  Tracks discussed: Run Run Run, Merry Old England, & Shiver LINKS TO EVERYTHING TAPE NOTES   linktr.ee/tapenotes  Listen to ‘All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade' here   Libertines Recording Limited, Universal Music Operations, EMI Intro Music - Sunshine Buddy, Laurel Collective GEAR MENTIONS 1957 NY Epiphone Casino Guitar Gibson J45 Guitar Marshall Amps Whurli The Albion Rooms Gear OUR GEAR https://linktr.ee/tapenotes_ourgear HELP SUPPORT THE SHOW If you'd like to help support the show you can donate as little or as much as you'd like here, (we really appreciate your contributions :)  Donate Or you can join us on Patreon, where among many things you can access full length videos of most new episodes, ad-free episodes and detailed gear list breakdowns. To be honest, I could name another hundred artists and projects but lets just say he can play piano, guitar, guitarette, bass, hurdy gurdy, omnichord and something called the guitorgan? In this episode, Leo is happy to be tired and frustrated in order to have something to talk about. Police have been called to Kent's biggest secondary school after a protest by pupils, similar to ones that have been shared on TikTok. It is understood students at Homewood School in Tenterden staged a rally over issues around toilets, access to changing rooms and uniform policy. Also in education news, the headteacher of a secondary school in Herne Bay has told parents his staff will no longer intervene in disputes originating on social media. We have been getting reaction from a social media consultant. A young dad suffering from burns and vision problems following an explosion in East Malling has told the podcast he wants answers. Curtis Bartley-Rae was visiting neighbours in Catlyn Close when a blast tore through their apartment. Hear what the housing association has had to say. Ofgem's reduced the energy price cap - but bills are still expected to rise in April. The regulator's knocked nearly £1,000 off the typical total suppliers are allowed to charge - but at the same time the government's cutting financial help. We've been getting reaction from the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce which represents businesses in the county. Libertines frontman Carl Barat is going to perform at a benefit gig for to help save a Kent art school. More than £50,000 was raised in January to stop The Margate School from closing -  but they need even more to secure their future. And in sport, hear from the Gillingham manager following their 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon at the weekend.

Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd

Forming in 1997 and fumbling through line-ups featuring Razorlight's Johnny Borrell on bass and an elderly jazz musician on drums, The Libertines were signed to legendary indie label Rough Trade in 2001. They were supposed to be the British equivalent of The Strokes, but they were so much more. Pete Doherty and Carl Barat shared songwriting duties as well as needles, with the rambunctiousness of their live shows matched only by the fistfights, robberies and cocaine consumption in their personal lives. Up The Bracket was their brilliant debut album, puncturing the timid wank of post-Britpop U.K. rock and paving the way for an avalanche of copycats that would be known collectively as ‘landfill indie'. Up The Bracket is the album we've enjoyed this week. Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Liam Withnail have listened to it, so now they're going to talk about everything from the difference between a trilby and a fedora, to the exact pubs in Camden where Doherty and Barat rubbed shoulders with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Liam's friend Pat. It's a noir novel about 1980's New York, a religious commune in Tennessee, and the myriad characters entwined in the death of Red Henley. We talk about how it was written because of old ambitions and checklists he about writing a novel, also how working for him is a bit feast or famine, and how that infects the attitude of how his work is going. You can hear why he leaves time between writing books, and how he switches on different parts of hid brain depending on the work he's doing.Support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Tracklist:"Neat Neat Neat", The Damned"Orgasm Addict", The Buzzcocks"Minnie's in the Money", Benny Goodman"Anarchy in the UK", Sex Pistols"Janie Jones", The Clash"Squeeze Box", The Who"Digsy's Dinner", Oasis en vivo en 100 Club, 1994"Drive my car", Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010"Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010"The End", Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Orchid Room er aktuelle med singlen "Be The Light" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktPCoc_rKpo). Biggles and Bilo. The Boys in the Band. Ali and Dan discuss What Became of the Likely Lads?! The Libertines - Peter Doherty, Carl Barat, John Hassell and Gary Powell - spearheaded the UK garage rock scene in the early noughties and became one of the most infamous bands in music history. Originally signed to Rough Trade records thanks to the influence of James Endeacott, they have released three albums to date - 2002's Up The Bracket, which was produced by The Clash's Mick Jones, 2004's self-titled album and the unlikely Anthems For Doomed Youth, which arrived in 2015. One of their most successful songs - Don't Look Back Into The Sun - celebrated it's seventeenth birthday this week, and they'll soon take to the stage at one of the UK's first socially distanced gigs at the Virgin Money Unity Arena in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so it felt like a perfect time to reflect on The Good Old Days and decide on seven scuzzy but sublime post-punk songs to include in our setlist. There's is a turbulent and unique story of excess, drug addiction, theft and their enduring faith in love and music, so whether or not you know they're music, you're guaranteed a fascinating listen. Tracklist:"Neat Neat Neat", The Damned "Orgasm Addict", The Buzzcocks"Minnie's in the Money", Benny Goodman"Anarchy in the UK", Sex Pistols"Janie Jones", The Clash"Squeeze Box", The Who"Digsy's Dinner", Oasis en vivo en 100 Club, 1994“Drive my car”, Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010“Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010“The End”, Paul McCartney en vivo en 100 Club, 2010

Sound Affects: Music & Mental Health

In the early 2000s – post-Britpop – an influx of indie bands emerged, beginning with New York based The Strokes. This paved the way for the Hives, The Vines, The Soundtrack of our Lives, and then a host of British bands – the most popular of all of them, The Libertines, as fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat. Around 2003/4, following Pete and Carl's falling out in relation to drug abuse, Pete formed side project Babyshambles, which took off in its own right. After a turbulent start with drummer Gemma leaving the band, Adam Ficek – previously a musician in the band The White Sport – was brought on board as Babyshambles' drummer. My overriding memory of these early 2000s years was the extent to which drug use and litigious activity by rock stars were getting equal prominence in the press (if not more) as the music itself. While Britpop spread a message of invincibility, togetherness and youth, there seemed to be darker, sinister undertones connected to the drug culture around the 2000s bands which, for me, started to become synonymous with that time and which led to a noticeable isolation, separation and exclusivity within the indie music scene, spilling out into the behaviour and attitudes of the public fan base. I observed this shift acutely while at university when I was working a part-time job in a ticket box office of an indie club in my late teens. I really wondered about this phenomenon and welcomed the opportunity to speak to Adam Ficek of Babyshambles who was in his musical ascendancy around this time. On speaking to Adam, I became fascinated by his trajectory into the psychotherapeutic world after experiences with Babyshambles. I was keen to hear about his own understanding of how his turbulent upbringing led to deep emotional wounds that got re-triggered within the rock music industry climate of the time. We talk about that upbringing, his lifestyle on the road within Babyshambles, his exit from the band and subsequent healing process that led him to a new music journey and academic career in music psychology and psychotherapeutic practice. We also explore Adam's interest in the way sound production affects us emotionally.  Helplines and support listed below (hover over text for hyperlinks).
