Last week's launch of Season 6: Episode 1 generated more downloads than we'd received for quite some time & I want to thank you so much for warmly welcoming back the podcast in 2025 in the same week we celebrated its fifth anniversary. A few days ago, I uploaded a new film recommendation video in a supplemental series for patrons that I'm calling Watch With Jen: Bonus Recs & I'm keeping them unlocked to the public for a few months before they'll become strict subscriber exclusives. We've had a huge increase in subscribers to our Patreon at the free level & I hope that will continue & you'll consider supporting the show for as little as $1 per month, which covers our RSS hosting fees, research, equipment, & more. In this week's brand new installment, we're continuing the conversation we began last week that's devoted to the films of Los Angeles. Paying tribute to a beautiful city that I love & its wonderful spirited people, I'm hoping that these lively, funny, thoughtful chats about some of our favorite films that were shot & set within the city limits will bring a little joy after the devastating fires of early January. Clocking in at a little over 90 minutes, you will hear SAINT OF THE NARROWS STREET author William Boyle on MULHOLLAND DR., film critic Courtney Howard on TROOP BEVERLY HILLS & SPEED, & author Nikki Dolson on TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. (Note: previously announced guest, author S.A. Cosby had a scheduling conflict & will be appearing on another installment soon instead.) I enjoyed all of these discussions immensely & tend to get a little rowdy with my friends (as longtime listeners have noticed) so we go everywhere from recalling our early David Lynch experiences to giving Shelley Long her due to wondering why I find the sequence in TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. where Willem Dafoe makes funny money so intensely erotic. It's a lot... in a good way (& please be aware that there are spoilers galore in that chat). It's wild, I lost track of how many episodes I uploaded by the end of 2024 because it was a very overwhelming time & in my head, I assumed that we'd be hitting the 250th episode of the podcast closer to summer. This week, I decided to sit down & do the math (twice) & realized that I was completely mistaken. I will actually be hitting the 250th episode of the show next week, which blows my mind. There would be no point in doing this if my generous, talented guests didn't share their time with me & people didn't listen so while this is a one-woman endeavor behind the scenes, its success is a group effort. Your support, enthusiasm, & involvement has kept it going so you're all vital & valued & I hope you'll stay tuned. When you're not only adapting but also modernizing the great Charles Dickens (and in only your second feature!) you're bound to go through some headaches. It seemed like a pretty safe bet for the summer of 2010: an energetic action comedy (with romance!) from two of the planet's biggest, prettiest movie stars. But then it hit theaters, everyone from film critics to moviegoers said "meh, what else you got?" And despite a few good notices and some solid overseas business, it vanished pretty quickly. But is it overhated? Frequent guest / film critic Courtney Howard says, "well, yes. It is." Thanks for listening to Overhated! There are 100+ more episodes at patreon.com/scottEweinberg. What happens when you remove the few moments of Christmas-themed sweetness from a franchise otherwise known for wildly over-the-top comedic violence? You get Home Alone 3, which Roger Ebert liked more than the first two. It's true. Big thanks to my guest, film critic Courtney Howard. Thanks for listening to Overhated! Some call it a horrifying fever dream; others refer to it as a cinematic panic attack. And those are the people who like it! General audiences back in 2017 were clearly unhappy with what Darren Aronofsky was doling out this time around -- but some brave moviegoers, and a good portion of film critics, found a lot to like. And this insane thriller has earned lots of new fans over the past few years. Big thanks to film critic Courtney Howard (@lulamaybelle) for joining me for this discussion! Also, thank you, patrons! Today's Episode we talk about Mental Health and how many of us are going through uncharted waters at the current moment. Dr. Howard gives us some tips on how to have some check-ins with ourselves, tips on finding the right therapist, and so much more. Dr. Courtney Howard is a adult psychiatrist in Atlanta, GA. She completed her psychiatry training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. She is thrilled that more people are taking advantage of the benefits of therapy. Through her practice, she seeks to help people heal so that they can better position themselves to live a life they love.
Friendly, genuine, and laid-back, Courtney Howard is as easy to talk to in real life as she is on Twitter. Recorded in the last week of May (and before the vital protests and current events began), in this wide-ranging exchange, Courtney discusses her background in film and the interesting road that led her to write about movies as well as some of the films she's currently watching in quarantine.Veering off-topic for a terrifically fun segment about '80s music, at the end of the episode, Jen took the opportunity to ask the devoted nail polish collector about some of her favorite polishes (including 2 that tie in with film).Originally Posted on Patreon (6/18/20) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/38377839Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Welcome Back to another episode of the Cross Border Interview Podcast. If you don’t know by now, my name is Christopher Brown and I’ll be your host. Since the launch of the podcast I’ve been asked the same thing, why do you do this podcast? And I give everyone the same answer. This podcast is about talking to people in an intimate setting and just having a discussion. Today we find ourselves often becoming keyboard warriors and have forgotten the lost art of the conversation. So with that in mid 2019 I started this podcast to achieve one goal, get people to have conversations again. With no notes, no prepared questions I sit down with subjects to learn about them, from them. Today we continue our Green Party of Canada Leadership Candidate Series. We chat with Dr. Courtney Howard. Dr. Howard and I chat about her life, her bid for the Green Party of Canada Leadership and how she believes her vision of Canada will connect with voters from coast to coast to coast. So here is Cross Border Interview Ft. Dr. Courtney Howard. "The pandemic is a reminder of the intimate and delicate relationship between people and planet. Any efforts to make our world safer are doomed to fail unless they address the critical interface between people and pathogens, and the existential threat of climate change that is making our earth less habitable." Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. In this cross generational catch up on the post COVID world, Roger Harris, Courtney Howard and Omnia El Omrani are talking about the old normal, and the opportunities within the new normal.
*All The President's Minutes* is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film *All The President's Men* as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For the 63rd minute, I join entertainment journalist with bylines at Variety, SheKnows, Awards Circuit, the very talented Courtney Howard. Courtney and I discuss how much we relish fully realised lives of the secondary characters, the weight of ethical compromise, and how much we would never want to call an ex for a favour. ----------------------- *About Courtney Howard* ----------------------- Courtney Howard is a film critic and entertainment journalist whose work has been published on Variety, SheKnows, Awards Circuit and FreshFiction.tv. In addition to being a member of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), she's also a member of the Critic's Choice Association (CCA, formerly known as the BFCA), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ). Born and raised in Northern California, Courtney has had a love of Hollywood ever since seeing her first film in theatres at age 6 ('E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial'). She learned about movie-making craft and theory at BIOLA University, earning a degree in film. She now resides in Southern California with her screenwriter husband and has never met a dachshund she didn't like. *Twitter:* @Lulamaybelle ( https://twitter.com/Lulamaybelle ) *Rotten Tomatoes* ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/critic/courtney-howard/movies ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The federal government plans to support a proposed ban on the use of heavy fuel oil by ships plying Arctic waters. (Sean Kilpatrick/THE CANADIAN PRESS) Environmentalists have long been concerned about shipping in the Arctic using heavy fuel oil (HFO) also known as "bunker oil" to power the large vessels. HFO is a thick low quality fuel, used primarily because it is relatively inexpensive. However, environmental groups also say HFO use emits substantial amounts of black carbon soot along with the risk of extremely difficult if not impossible clean up should there be an accident or spill. Levon heard that Canada may announce a ban on HFO use in the Arctic next week, but he also gets reaction from a shipper who feels such a decision is wrong. As the Earth experiences more extreme weather, and wildlife is dying, from corals, to insects, to tropical forests, more people are experiencing ecological anxiety and grief. Science journalist Gaia Vince has been reporting on the growing crisis across our planet’s ecosystems, and has met many who are shocked and saddened by the enormity of the environmental changes taking place. She talks to scientists and medics working at the frontline of environmental change, and hears that, despite being expected to distance themselves from what’s happening, they are affected emotionally. Ashlee Consulo, of Memorial University on the Canadian island of Labrador, and Courtney Howard, a doctor in Yellowknife, tell Gaia about their experiences of living and working with indigenous peoples in areas where temperatures are rising rapidly and the ice is melting. Steve Simpson of Exeter University and Andy Radford of Bristol University are both professors of biology who have watched coral reefs become devastated by climate change. Recently they wrote a letter to the journal Science headlined Grieving environmental scientists need support to raise awareness of the issues researchers are facing. And Gaia visits the aquarium at the Horniman Museum in London, where Jamie Craggs is trying to breed corals for future generations. Image: Greenland Inuit hunter (Credit: Earl Grad/Getty Images)

This week’s episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe gets heavy on dividing the guys up into factions, as they discuss Divergent with guest Courtney Howard. “It was a reverse floor plan, with bedrooms on the entrance level and then upstairs the kitchen, maybe more than one, and various entertainment areas. The house should have been full of law enforcement. Instead, the boys from Protect and Serve had set up a command post at the pool cabana, somewhere out in back. Like getting in some last-minute free catering before their federal overlords showed up. Sounds of distant splashing, rock n roll radio, eating between means. Some kidnapping. ”…In the time it took [Sloane] to lead him through a dim sunken interior full of taupe carpeting, suede upholstery, and teak, which seemed to extend indefinitely in the direction of Pasadena, Doc learned that she had a degree from the London School of economics, had recently begun studying tantric yoga, and had met Mickey Wolfmann originally in Las Vegas.” There’s a reason why our buddy Thomas Pynchon describes the House of Wolfmann as a descent into Hell—for Doc, it kinda is. Having just met a salt-of-the-earth gal like Hope Harlingen (heroin and heaving and hardons aside), who with a quiet and modest dignity refuses to accept the death of her husband despite no support from the cops or the banks, it must be a shock to the system for our knockabout dick to find a woman outright celebrating the non-death of her missing husband with the cops and the banks and everyone else on the wrong side of karma in 1970. And that’s this scene in a nut, isn’t it?
