Lucas 10: 33, RVCHace poco mis sobrinas me enseñaron su canción favorita: «El ratón samaritano, de Francisco Orantes. Cuenta que un grillo había sido asaltado y herido por unas hormigas. Una langosta y otro grillo que pasaban por el camino lo ignoraron, mientras que un ratón se detuvo y lo ayudó.Esta versión del Buen Samaritano para niños, me llevó a preguntarme: ¿por qué Jesús escogió un sacerdote, un levita y un samaritano para su historia? La elección parece arbitraria; bien pudieron haber sido un profeta, un príncipe y un soldado. Sin embargo, al seleccionar a estos protagonistas, Jesús quiso enseñarnos el verdadero significado de la palabra «prójimo».El primero en pasar junto al malherido viajero fue un sacerdote. Su estatus lo convierte en un excelente candidato para ayudar al herido, «pero al verlo, dio un rodeo y siguió adelante» (Lucas 10: 31). Jesús no dice por qué el sacerdote no quiso ayudar, así que no sirve de mucho especular. Todo parece indicar que la función del sacerdote en la historia es elevar nuestras expectativas para luego desvanecerlas.El segundo personaje es un levita, que al tener un rango inferior al sacerdocio suscita menos expectativas. Pero como este tampoco ofrece ayuda, la situación del herido parece perdida.Es en este punto donde la historia da un giro sorpresivo. El patrón lógico de la época hubiera sido sacerdote-levita-israelita, y que este último brindara ayuda al herido. Pero el Maestro introduce un personaje inesperado. Dada la amarga rivalidad que existía entre judíos y samaritanos, un samaritano era la última persona de la que los oyentes esperarían ayuda. Pero el samaritano, «al verlo, sintió compasión» (Lucas 10: 33) y lo socorrió.Para Jesús, la esencia de ser «prójimo» consiste en tener la sensibilidad de ver una necesidad y satisfacerla incluso cuando no es lo que se espera de nosotros. Y solo la compasión puede llevarnos a ponernos en los zapatos del otro e impulsarnos a actuar en su beneficio. Pero hay más. El contexto de la parábola es el segundo gran mandamiento: «ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo» (Lucas 10: 27), por lo que la compasión abnegada es la definición de ese amor que Dios espera de ti y de mí. Así las cosas, las palabras finales de Jesús constituyen la mejor conclusión en este día: «Ve y haz tú lo mismo» (Lucas 10: 37).

São Tomé e Príncipe pode ser primeiro país no Mundo a ter mosquito que visa erradicar a malária

As Universidades da Califórnias em parceria com o Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e a Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe têm vindo a estudar nos últimos anos a possibilidade de libertar um mosquito geneticamente modificado cujo organismo elimina a malária. Os estudos prévios estão quase concluídos e só falta agora as autoridades do país autorizarem a libertação deste mosquito na natureza para verificar a eficácia na erradicação do paludismo. Só em 2024 foram detectados mais de 263 milhões de casos de malária no Mundo que levaram a 597 mil mortes, segundo dados da Organização Mundial de Saúde. Dessas mortes, estimam-se que 95% tenham acontecido em África o que torna a malária, uma doença sem vacina mas que pode ser tratada com os medicamentos adequados, uma das doenças mais preocupantes no continente. Os investigadores das Universidades da Califórnia pensam ter descoberto uma solução, modificando geneticamente o mosquito Anopheles, que transmite a malária. O organismo deste insecto geneticamente modificado passa a eliminar sozinho o parasita que transmitido aos humanos causa o paludismo e essa característica torna-se um gene dominante, fazendo com que toda a população de mosquitos de um determinado local deixe de propagar esta doença. "Este mosquito é um mosquito em tudo idêntico ao mosquito que já existe aqui em São Tomé e Príncipe, mas com uma diferença notável: ele tem dois genes benéficos e sintéticos que são introduzidos no mosquito através de um mecanismo de engenharia genética que se designa por 'gene drive'. O 'gene drive' vai transportar os genes benéficos e integrá-los no genoma do mosquito com precisão, ou seja, nós sabemos exactamente onde é que ele vai ser integrado, mas o drive tem um papel dual, não só a integração dos genes benéficos dentro do mosquito, mas também à dispersão destes genes na população", explicou João Pinto, professor auxiliar e chefe da unidade de Entomologia Médica do Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. João Pinto lidera as operações de campo nas ilhas de São Tomé e Príncipe, selando assim a parceria com a Universidade Nova de Lisboa e também a Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe onde este projecto, que se chama UCMI - Universidade da Califórnia - Iniciativa Contra a Malária em STP, instalou um laboratório molecular e onde investigadores locais trabalham lado a lado com investigadores portugueses, norte-americanos e ainda outras nacionalidades. Antes de qualquer trabalho de campo, os investigadores levaram a cabo um estudo de forma a determinar onde se poderiam levar a cabo as primeiras experiências e foram analisados mais de 20 arquipélagos e ilhas, tendo a escolha final recaído em São Tomé e Príncipe devido à presença da malária, do mosquito Anopheles, mas também a própria dimensão das duas ilhas. Assim, desde 2021 que estão a ser levadas a cabo experiências laboratoriais no país e estudos preparatórios sem que ainda tenha havido qualquer libertação de mosquitos na natureza. Os estudos preparatórios terminam dentro de alguns meses e a equipa quer agora passar à fase de libertação na ilha do Príncipe, mas ainda precisa de luz verde das autoridades. "Até à data o UCMI não libertou nenhum mosquito modificado em São Tomé e Príncipe, nem sequer iniciou a sua produção. A primeira fase, que era precisamente uma fase que enquadrava três actividades principais as pesquisas científicas, a capacitação técnica de infraestruturas, de recursos humanos e o engajamento comunitário e das partes interessadas é uma fase que está em vias de conclusão. Dentro de alguns meses teremos essa fase já perfeitamente concluída e teremos que efectivamente passar para a segunda fase. Passar para a segunda fase carece de autorização de aprovação do Governo São Tomé e Príncipe. E é nisso que temos vindo a trabalhar e contamos ter uma resposta nos próximos meses sobre se de facto havemos de avançar ou não. Se avançarmos, teremos que implementar essencialmente duas actividades a primeira, que é a produção do próprio mosquito modificado, que será produzido aqui em São Tomé, com base num mosquito que se encontra em São Tomé e através de tecnologia que será implementada em São Tomé, nomeadamente no Laboratório de Biologia Molecular da Universidade de São Tomé e Príncipe. Uma vez concretizada a produção de um mosquito modificado, então aí sim, teríamos que avançar para uma fase de libertação experimental. Gostaríamos de iniciar na Ilha do Príncipe e uma vez havendo uma libertação experimental, teríamos depois todo um processo de acompanhamento da situação que nunca será inferior a três anos, entre três a cinco anos e a nossa expectativa", detalhou João Pinto. A libertação de mosquitos geneticamente modificados é algo que pode assustar uma parte da população e, por isso, o UCMI tem trabalhado nos últimos anos junto das comunidades no país para explicar que os mosquitos não vão desaparecer nem deixar de picar as pessoas, vão sim, segundo os estudos levados a cabo até agora, deixar de transmitir o parasita da malária. "É importante fazermos esse engajamento e sensibilização comunitária não só no âmbito do projecto, mas como do paludismo em si. Porque nós constatámos no início do projecto que na comunidade poucas pessoas sabem como é que ocorre o processo de transmissão do paludismo. E associado a isso nós estamos a propor um projecto de tecnologia para combater paludismo, onde é preciso nós sensibilizarmos e continuarmos a informar e explicar às pessoas sobre esta tecnologia", explicou Lodney Nazaré, ponto focal do Envolvimento do UCMI em São Tomé e Príncipe. Ouça aqui Lodney Nazaré: Entre as acções de sensibilização há actividades que consistem em levar microscópios às crianças para que possam ver os mosquitos e compreender como se processa a transmissão do parasita. Actualmente em São Tomé e Príncipe não há óbitos devido à doença, mas há ainda muitas pessoas que ficam doentes, colocando não só as suas vidas em risco, mas também a subsistência das famílias já que muitas mães e pais de família têm de deixar de trabalhar no período de convalescença da doença. Caso o Governo de São Tomé e Príncipe autorize a passagem à segunda fase deste projecto, o país tornar-se-ia um caso de estudo mundial já que nada assim foi ainda tentado noutro território. O UCMI espera agora a resposta das autoridades, tendo já elucidade uma grande parte da população. "A maneira como as pessoas reagem e questionam o procjeto mostra claramente o progresso que há naquilo que é o trabalho de engajamento que nós temos vindo a fazer. A primeira vez que o projeto foi apresentado em São Tomé, as questões eram mais difíceis de responder, fruto também do desconhecimento total daquilo que o projecto estava está a propor. [...] No ano passado chegámos ao estágio em que alguns membros comunitários já fizeram, inclusive vídeos comunitários, a solicitar que devêssemos avançar com o projeto. Dada a compreensão que eles obtiveram do próprio projecto. Não sei se no final teremos um grupo de pessoas advogar junto ao governo sobre o projecto, mas nós de facto esperamos que isso aconteça e quem sabe isso poderá ajudar o governo a decidir sobre o futuro do projecto", concluiu Lodney Nazaré.
