Game theory is a way of quantitatively describing what happens any time one thing interacts with another thing, when both things have goals and potential rewards. That's a pretty broad class of interesting events, so it is unsurprising that game theory is a useful way of thinking about everything from international relations to the evolution of peacock feathers. I talk with philosopher Kevin Zollman about what game theory is and how it gets used in biology and human interactions. We discuss how thinking in game-theoretic terms can help understand the origin of meaning and intentionality in human language.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/12/01/337-kevin-zollman-on-game-theory-signals-and-meaning/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Kevin Zollman received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Irvine. Data science training programs often jump straight into technical methods without teaching one of the most critical skills for project success - problem framing. Without proper framing, data science projects are doomed to fail, right from the start, as data scientists find themselves solving the wrong problems or building models that don't address real business decisions. In this Value Boost episode, Professor Jeff Camm joins Dr. Genevieve Hayes to reveal the specific problem framing framework that decision scientists use to ensure they're solving the right problems from the start, dramatically improving their success rates compared to traditional data science approaches. You'll discover:The medical doctor approach to diagnosing business problems by distinguishing symptoms from root causes [02:09]The critical question that reveals what decisions actually need to be made [04:53]How to turn model "failures" into valuable strategic insights for management [06:24]Why thinking beyond the data prevents you from building technically perfect but business-useless solutions [10:04]Guest BioProf Jeff Camm is a decision scientist and the Inmar Presidential Chair in Analytics at the Wake Forest University School of Business. This week's energy is all about finding balance, moving with clarity, and knowing when to take action (and when to pause). We've just entered a brand new season with the Equinox — a natural reset point. That means fresh starts, new momentum, and a chance to set the tone for the months ahead. But here's the catch
Most data scientists have never heard of decision science, yet this discipline - which dates back to WWII - may hold the key to solving one of data science's biggest problems: the 87% project failure rate. While data scientists excel at building models that predict outcomes, decision scientists focus on modelling the actual business decisions that need to be made - a subtle but crucial difference that dramatically improves success rates. In this episode, Prof Jeff Camm joins Dr. Genevieve Hayes to explore how decision science approaches problems differently from data science, why decision science approaches lead to higher success rates, and how data scientists can integrate these techniques into their own work. This episode reveals:The fundamental difference between modelling data and modelling decisions [04:12]Why decision science projects have historically had higher success rates than current data science efforts [10:42]How to avoid the "ill-defined problem" trap that kills most data science projects [21:12]The medical doctor approach to understanding what business problems really need solving [22:28]Guest BioProf Jeff Camm is a decision scientist and the Inmar Presidential Chair in Analytics at the Wake Forest University School of Business. Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.—Loren is a UX Researcher with over 8 years of experience designing user-centered financial solutions. She's passionate about uncovering actionable insights that bridge user needs with business objectives, and specializes in transforming complex behaviors into strategies that elevate digital experiences. Loren currently works at JPMorgan Chase as a Lead UX Researcher for digital commerce solutions. Over her time at Chase she has worked across several organizations, getting to know a wide variety of customer-facing and employee-facing products and services giving her a unique insight into how the customer views Chase as a whole.Kathryn is a behavioral neuroscientist with experience in consumer research and methodological innovation. She earned her Bachelors in Neuroscience and Business from Muhlenberg College and her Masters in Behavioral and Decision Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. She currently works at JP Morgan Chase as a User Researcher, with a focus on methodological development, infusing behavioral science and design thinking into the customer experience. In our conversation, we discuss:* What end-to-end research actually means in practice and why it starts before users ever touch your product.* How to use habit loops to map and influence real customer behavior without forcing change.* The power of live account interviews for breaking out of prototype fantasyland.* Strategies for building alignment and shifting stakeholders from “I need” to “we're solving.”* How internal playbooks, role-play exercises, and empathy maps help teams stay grounded in real life. Some takeaways:* End-to-end research isn't just a longer study, but a wider lens. Loren and Kathryn define end-to-end research as everything from a customer's initial intent to what happens after they close the product. It's not just about usability or funnel drop-off, but about how their lives influence how they interact with your product. To get real insight, you have to look outside the interface and understand what's happening before, during, and after each interaction. That kind of zoomed-out context changes the questions you ask and the recommendations you make.* Customers don't live inside your product and they won't change their habits for you. Many organizations build with the assumption that users will adapt. They won't. Through live account research, Loren uncovered how users ignore offers, stick to their routines, and reject anything that adds complexity. Kathryn explains how habit loops (cue → routine → reward) help teams understand why users behave the way they do, and why your product needs to slot into existing routines, not disrupt them.* Usability labs are structured, focused, and quiet. Real life is not. That's why live account research can be so powerful; users bring their own data, context, and mess. Watching someone navigate a real account reveals things no A/B test or journey map ever could, especially when paired with tools like empathy maps that capture what people are saying, doing, thinking, and feeling.* To build cross-team alignment, make the customer the common ground. When products span multiple teams, priorities clash. Loren uses design rationale briefs and vision statements to realign teams around what the customer wants, not just what each team needs. Kathryn emphasizes the importance of shared language and moving from “I need” to “we're building.” Getting people into the same room, physically or virtually, and grounding them in the customer's perspective is what turns politics into partnership.* If you want teams to understand context, you have to simulate real life. Kathryn runs role-playing workshops where stakeholders juggle real-life distractions while interacting with a product. It's a reminder that customers are busy, stressed, and multitasking, and your product has to work under those conditions. Loren adds that this mindset shift helps counter the overconfidence teams can get from testing in perfect research environments. Their advice: don't just study what customers say, watch what they actually do in the wild.Where to find Loren:* LinkedInWhere to find Kathryn: * LinkedInStop piecing it together. Divorce: Emergency Protocol by AJ Maddeny https://www.amazon.com/Divorce-Emergency-Protocol-AJ-Maddeny/dp/B0FFYP9JJ8 Maddeny.com Divorce: Emergency Protocol is a structural survival guide for the most disorienting phase of separation — the moment after one spouse says “I want out,” but before anything else has taken shape. This isn't therapy. It's not a pep talk. It's a calm, unflinching handbook designed to help you function clearly when the ground shifts beneath you. Built for the person who didn't initiate the breakup but is now responsible for stabilizing its aftermath, this book offers clear tools for navigating the volatile early stretch of divorce — legally, emotionally, and logistically. You'll learn how to: Reclaim agency when you feel blindsided Avoid costly legal and financial missteps Prepare documentation and protect key records Communicate with dignity instead of panic Support your children while staying grounded Design the first phase of your divorce with intention, not impulse Whether you're still sharing a home or reeling from a sudden declaration, this guide helps you lead with structure — not survival instinct. Written by a conflict resolution professional trained in decision science and negotiation, Divorce: Emergency Protocol reframes divorce not as personal failure, but as a structural rupture requiring clarity, not chaos. You won't find closure here. But you will find your footing.About the author AJ Maddeny is a conflict strategist and decision systems expert whose work challenges conventional thinking about power, resolution, and personal agency. With advanced degrees in Conflict Analysis and Decision Science, he brings a structural lens to life's most disorienting experiences — including disputes, negotiation, and misaligned systems. His approach to resolution is grounded in objective analysis and dynamic engagement with systems, roles, and personalities. Maddeny's goal is to move readers from chaos to clarity, restoring agency and fairness through strategic structure. By mapping new frameworks for human interaction, he offers tools — not just insight — to help individuals rebuild coherence where systems break down.

Many ecosystems fail because they're designed for rational actors. The revelation? Humans are systematically irrational—and the ecosystems that embrace this reality dramatically outperform those that don't.While ecosystem architects optimize for logical decision-making, they overlook the implicit forces that drive actual stakeholder behavior. Dr. Aaron Reid, founder of Sentient Decision Science, reveals a mathematical breakthrough: systems that incorporate both conscious reasoning and unconscious emotional drivers achieve 94% behavioral prediction accuracy, compared to 50-60% for traditional rational-actor models.Paradigm Shifts:→ The AI Evolution Imperative: AI models regress toward sameness without fresh human behavioral data—ecosystems that inject implicit intelligence maintain competitive advantage→ Emotion as Universal Currency: All stakeholder decisions follow mathematical formulas where emotion and reason combine in predictable ratios—the first quantifiable model of how humans choose→ The Systematic Irrationality Advantage: Humans are "systematically irrational." Ecosystems that design for this reality dramatically outperform rational-actor models→ The Professional Blind Spot: Even analytical professionals carry measurable unconscious associations—revealing hidden stakeholder coordination challenges in complex systemsEcosystem Impact:→ Traditional stakeholder analysis: 50-60% behavior prediction vs. implicit + explicit methods: 90-96%→ Nissan electric vehicle soundscape: implicit testing identified sounds with intuitive pedestrian safety meaning while maintaining brand fit—solving multi-stakeholder ecosystem challenge→ Meta study: Emotion AI outperformed traditional methods 3X in predicting salesThe Innovation: Patented response-time measurement down to milliseconds, combined with emotional swipe velocity detection and a global database of 1.5B+ subconscious associations. The Breakthrough: The world's first mathematical algorithm integrating System 1 (emotional) and System 2 (rational) processing—enabling ecosystem architects to design for how humans actually behave rather than how they say they behave.Strategic Application: Any multi-stakeholder ecosystem, such as innovation networks, organizational transformation, policy adoption, or aerospace missions, can revolutionize effectiveness by measuring both implicit drivers and explicit feedback in system design.Strategic Reframe: The most adaptive ecosystems will shift from asking "What do stakeholders say they want?" to understanding: "What unconscious forces drive stakeholder behavior—and how do we architect systems that work with human nature rather than against it?"Guest: Dr. Aaron Reid, Founder & CEO, Sentient Decision Science | Ph.D. Experimental PsychologyHost: Dyan Finkhousen, Founder & CEO, Shoshin WorksSeries Hosts:Vikram Shyam, Lead Futurist, NASA Glenn Research CenterDyan Finkhousen, Founder & CEO, Shoshin WorksEcosystemic Futures is provided by NASA Convergent Aeronautics Solutions Project in collaboration with Shoshin Works.
