Ex-NFL football player Devon Still and his wife Asha married shortly after Devon's young daughter, Leah, went into remission from stage four cancer. While rejoicing over Leah's healing, they were soon blindsided by blended family struggles. Devon and Asha talk with Ron Deal about how they had both been raised in divorced homes and didn't understand how to create a lasting marriage. They began to learn about blended family dynamics and take intentional steps toward harmony in their relationship. Wow. I probably say that word at least 15 times in today's episode with Devon Still, former NFL player, author, speaker, and advocate for childhood cancer awareness. In 2014, Devon's world was turned upside down when his then 4-year-old daughter Leah was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in 2014 and given a 50-50 chance to survive. In today's episode, he talks me through all of it — from feeling powerless at her bedside to how he learned to embrace vulnerability. A huge thank you to United Therapeutics for setting up this conversation, as Devon recently partnered with them on a new "Braving NeuroBLASToma" campaign. Former NFL defensive end Devon Still was familiar with adversity during and after his football career. His biggest adversity came after his retirement in June 2014. His daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma stage 4 cancer. As Devon sat with her during treatment, he noticed a lot of kids were in the hospital, alone, while their mom or dad were at work, fighting to keep food on the table for their family. Inspired to financially help families whose children are battling cancer so no child has to battle alone, he started the Still Strong Foundation. Devon’s passion to make an impact in the lives of these families make him another example of an athlete doing good.

Listened to this Lewis Howe’s podcast with Devon Still earlier in the week, and grateful that I did. Devon Still played football for Penn State and some of you know that I am a big fan of PSU Wrestling and Football. Devon Still was at PSU during the Jerry Sandusky scandal and he was actually a senior and captain of the team during that time. Being a fan, it was interesting to hear is perspective. However, what captivated me, and at moments almost brought me to tears, was him sharing the story about his daughter, Leah, and her battle with cancer, at 4 years-old. It was incredibly moving and powerful. In this episode, we share how some lessons I learned from listening to Devon and Lewis helped me through a tough moment this week. “It is okay to not be okay.” – Devon Still
IT'S OK TO NOT BE OK. So often we feel like we have to mask what we are going through. We hide our fears. We cover our scars. But the adversity you face makes you a stronger person. You’re not the only one who is battling something. The more vulnerable you can be about what you’re up against, the more other people will be able to support you. It’s going to take a team effort. Don’t let a weak moment become a weak mindset. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk with a former NFL player who is now tackling childhood cancer: Devon Still. Devon Still is a professional athlete, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and advocate for childhood cancer awareness. He is also a former Houston Texan’s defensive end, a former Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive tackle, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and a Penn State University All-American. Perhaps most importantly, he is Leah’s dad, helping her publicly “beat up cancer” and embarking on a pediatric cancer-fighting journey. Devon shared that once he opened up about his daughter’s battle with cancer, the more love and connection he felt. He now wants everyone to be vulnerable about the storms they are facing. He also knows the importance of having fun along the way. So get ready to learn Devon’s lessons from the football field and life on Episode 764. Some Questions I Ask: What were the biggest lessons Joe Paterno taught you? (8:00) How have you been able to reinvent yourself after football? (30:00) What’s your mission moving forward? (33:00) What’s your dream for your daughter in the next 15 years? (46:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: What it was like playing for Penn State during the Sandusky Trial (3:00) The importance of visualizing your dreams (12:00) About Devon’s daughter’s battle with cancer (14:00) The biggest lesson Devon learned from football (23:00) Why it’s important to be vulnerable (40:00) How to appreciate the struggles life gives you (47:00)
Devon Still played college football at Penn State during the Paterno/Sandusky years, where he earned Consensus All-American honors. He was also drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012 and later went on to play for Houston Texans and the NY Jets. In 2014, his daughter, Leah was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma stage 4 cancer, and Devon has become well-known as a childhood cancer advocate.

Scars. We all have them, whether they are the time we fell off our bike when we were young or the emotional ones we carry with us as an adult. Every scar has a story! On today's show, we will hear from former NFL player Devon Still, and how his life has been a journey from one scar to the next. The post #143: How to Overcome Obstacles in Life with Faith appeared first on Mark Merrill's Blog.
Today, we’re talking all about developing the grit, tenacity, and perseverance to endure trials in life when they show-up at our doorstep. And our guest today is no stranger to any of that. Devon Still is a former defensive tackle who played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, and New York Jets. As a young professional athlete, he was offered a multimillion-dollar contract to play football, what many would consider a dream. For Devon Still, life has been a journey from one scar to the next and literally from one challenge to the next. Injury after injury started in high school and continued into his illustrious college football career as captain at Penn State, and even into his career in the NFL. But the biggest challenge of his life came when his young daughter, Leah, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma, a deadly brain cancer. Everything Devon knew about winning was about to be challenged. Everything he knew about life was about to be challenged. And everything he truly valued in life was about to be put on the line. But pumping through Devon’s soul, behind the brokenness and fear, was a determination to use the tactics he learned on the field to fight for his daughter’s life until death. Literally. In today’s conversation, you’re going to be challenged to ask yourself, in your own pain, whether or not you’re going to quit before time is up. It’s a question we all have to face in trials. Every storm you face will either break you or make you stronger. Buy Devon's Book Be proud of your scars. They’re signs that you survived whatever tried to break you. For Devon Still, life has been a journey from one scar to the next. From one challenge to the next. His is a story of pushing through pain and overcoming obstacles of all shapes and sizes—of choosing to fight for the sake of his family, his community, and his faith. Millions of people around the world have been inspired by Devon’s tireless devotion in helping his daughter, Leah, learn how to “beat up cancer.” But in these pages, Devon takes readers behind the headlines to reveal the deeper story of what prepared him for that fight. Still in the Game: Finding the Faith to Tackle Life’s Biggest Challenges is Devon’s declaration that our challenges reveal our purpose, that our scars make us stronger, and that no loss is too great to stop our comeback! Devon Still and Keni Thomas have braved life-or-death moments. Now they strive to set an example for others and show them how they trusted God for His life-giving presence. First up, Devon Still is an All-American defensive end who spent his NFL career playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, and New York Jets. In 2014, just weeks after his faith in God was re-ignited, Devon discovered Leah was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He recounts a pivotal moment in a hospital chapel that changed the way he viewed his new faith and his daughter’s disease. Our next guest, country music artist and former Army Ranger Keni Thomas, was impressed with a strong sense of duty to serve in the military. In 1993 he was deployed to Somalia, where he found himself entrenched in the horrific events portrayed in the book and movie Black Hawk Down. Today Keni is a motivational speaker who draws on his military experience to inspire audiences worldwide. He reflects on the fateful day in Mogadishu and describes the work he does now to help veterans transition back into civilian life, while demonstrating how gratitude can drastically change your perspective.
