We're living in a time of revolution, a time when the forces of climate change and artificial intelligence (AI) are converging in a way that will undoubtedly, dramatically change the world.Tom Riley, a retired NASA instrument engineer and prolific author who believes AI offers tremendous potential for the world, has written a new book called "Dark Heat," and it pulls all of that together. When Tom retired from NASA in 2014, he started coaching young people in science, technology. engineering and mathematics (STEM), and he quickly realized he needed to develop a detailed discussion of what today's generation must do about our climate crisis and how it will affect their future."The thing that struck me so strongly was that we owe our young people an explanation and some guidance on what to do in this very difficult time," he says. "We simply are not providing them with the direction they need."To help achieve that, Riley decided on a series of books aimed at today's generation, with the third one, "Dark Heat," now available. Written with the assistance of AI, it's a novel that pairs two "want-to-be detectives," Sarah and her AI companion, Janet N, who go into action when a friend who was involved in black market smuggling of food goes missing."They go through a long, complicated search to find out what happened to their friend and who the black marketers were," explains Riley, who has two engineering degrees and is a veteran of more than 40 years in high tech, mostly in space operations."It became very clear that the problems of climate change were just so overriding that it was unfair for me to teach young people about space if they're going to be hit upside the head by the climate crisis," Riley says on the podcast. "So we had to convert over, and I had to do a lot of research on what the problems were, what the long term problems were, what the short term problems were, (and) what the breaking points were."Then last March, "the large word AIs became available with ChatGBT 4, and all of a sudden we were sprinting past one of the big landmarks that was either going to make or break us. Consequently, we started this project to write a mystery with AI as a partner," he explains.Check out the complete interview for more about Riley's efforts in preparing today's generation for climate change and the burgeoning growth of artificial intelligence.Special BonusMeanwhile, Riley is providing two signed copies of "Dark Heat" for the first two Lean to the Left listeners or viewers who request one. In our latest episode, Zoe Cunningham is joined by Tom Riley, Delivery Principal at Softwire. Tom has overseen the successful delivery of numerous UK public sector digital projects, including the modernisation of the register to vote service, the cloud migration of the gender pay gap reporting service, and the replacement of the software underpinning the high-profile Feed-in-Tariff scheme. In this wide-ranging chat with Zoe, he shares insights on how to keep abreast of a diverse portfolio of projects, how to ensure teams stay up-to-speed with the latest GDS and industry best practices, and why he sometimes prefers old-fashioned pen-and-paper, and face-to-face communication, over their modern digital alternatives. Of course, no tech-related discussion at the moment would be complete without touching on artificial intelligence (AI), and Tom shares his thoughts on the opportunities and risks associated with AI in the unique context of government.

Artificial Intelligence is gaining tremendous momentum, a development that has caused some experts like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak to warn that AI development should at least be paused. We're going to explore that today with Tom Riley, a retired NASA instrument engineer and prolific author who believes AI offers tremendous potential for the world. In an open letter released in April, more than 1,000 tech experts called for AI-labs to “immediately pause for at least six months.” The signatories include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Elon Musk, among a who's who of brainiacs who worry that the world is “in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one — not even their creators — can understand, predict or reliably control.” The letter came from the Future of life Institute, a non-profit determined to steer us away from “extreme large-scale risks.” One researcher, Eliezer Yudkowsky, who has been warning about AI for two decades, says we should “shut it all down.”Stephen Hawking, the English theoretical physicist and author who died in 2018, put it even more directly, saying: “The development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” That sounds pretty serious. Sounds like there is more to worry about that whether students are cheating on their term papers by using an AI-app to write those papers for them. Our guest today, Tom Riley, who has worked on instruments for the Space Shuttle and NASA satellites, puts all this into perspective. Here are some questions we discussed with Tom:In a note to me, you said AI was like “dancing on a landslide.” Do these warnings that I just mentioned concern you? Should the rest of us regular people be concerned about the implications of AI?Does AI mean that people will be losing their jobs to AI?What about privacy violations…and deepfakes…like the fake pics of Donald Trump being arrested that received thousands of hits on social media? But what about the good it can do? Like addressing the climate crisis, for example? You wrote a great book, “A Climate of Revenge.”Tell us about your Climate Crisis Stories? There are two books, right? Plus, you have versions on YouTube, right? Is there a movie in the works? Or a Climate Crisis TV series? There still are a lot of climate change deniers out there. What do you think the response to this project would be?Can you give us a taste of the plot? Is the AI character a robot? There are a lot of Misconceptions about our climate crisis. For example, “Greenhouse.” Is that a good explanation? If the major problems are coming on slowly, is this then a real crisis? What other big problems are now clear, and where does AI come into play? How can people find out more about you and your work, including your books?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

This week, Nathan, Richard, Todd and Adrian Phoon leave the peasants of Worksop to their mud-eating and get together to ask themselves the questions Is the Doctor as big a hero as Robin Hood? and Is Robin Hood even real?, only to come up with some very surprising answers. It's Robot of Sherwood. Notes and links There have been any number of film versions of Robin Hood, which is part of the point, but Richard is mostly reminded of the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn as Robin, directed by Michael Curtiz, with an Oscar-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Errol Flynn didn't go to Scots College in Sydney, Nathan: it was Sydney Church of England Grammar School, commonly known as Shore. He claimed to have been expelled from Shore for having sex with one of the ladies who worked in the laundry. Star Trek: The Next Generation did its fantasy Robin Hood episode in its triumphant fourth season. It guest starred John DeLancie as Q and was called Qpid. Here is an article in The Guardian from 2014, reporting the cuts made to this episode because of the beheading of two American journalists by members of Islamic State. We spend some time talking about Ben Miller's career. He's one half of Armstrong and Miller, of course, as well as doing two series of Death in Paradise. Paul Cornell's Primeval episode which featured Miller hunting a dinosaur was called Traitor Revealed. When this was shot, Tom Riley was also playing a young Leonardo Da Vinci in Da Vinci's Demons. He was also in St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold (2009) with David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Climax is a 2018 psychological horror film directed, written, and co-edited by Gaspar Noé. Featuring an ensemble cast of 24 actors, led by Sofia Boutella, the plot is set in 1996 and follows a French dance troupe holding a days-long rehearsal in an abandoned school; the final night of rehearsing is a success, but the group's celebratory after-party takes a dark turn when the communal bowl of sangria is spiked with LSD, sending each of the dancers into agitated, confused and psychotic states. Kill Your Friends is a 2015 British satirical black comedy crime-thriller film directed by Owen Harris and written by John Niven based on his 2008 novel of the same name. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Craig Roberts, Tom Riley, and Georgia King.

Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris. It centers around two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), their fictional friendship and their fight against the British Raj. Set in the 1920s, the plot explores the undocumented period in their lives when both the revolutionaries chose to go into obscurity before they began the fight for their country. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as "Daniels"), who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo. The plot centers on a Chinese-American immigrant (played by Michelle Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse. Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis appear in supporting roles. The New York Times called the film a "swirl of genre anarchy" with elements of black comedy, science fiction, fantasy, martial arts films, and animation. Announced at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, the album marks Swift's first body of new work since her 2020 alternative folk albums, Folklore and Evermore. Actors Kristen Bell, Michael Ealy, Tom Riley, Mary Holland, Cameron Britton, Shelley Hennig, and Samsara Yett star in the series, which has elements of thrillers, but is primarily a parody of mystery psychological thrillers, as well as Scream. The eight-episode series runs less than four hours and was released on January 28, 2022, on Netflix. It received mixed reviews from critics, while Bell's performance was praised. The Rehearsal is an American docu-comedy television series created, written, and directed by and starring Nathan Fielder. It premiered on HBO on July 15, 2022, to critical acclaim. The Rehearsal features Nathan Fielder helping ordinary people rehearse difficult conversations or life events through the use of sets and actors hired to recreate real situations. The situations can be trivial, like confessing to a lie about educational history, or more complex, like raising a child. Fielder commissions extravagant sets with every detail recreated. He hires actors to inhabit these sets and practice different dialogue trees with his clients dozens of times. Information used to train the actors and build the sets is often collected without the subjects' knowledge.

Anchor (https://anchorbrewing.com) Brewmaster Tom Riley has been working on steam beer for a long time—38 years, in fact. He started at Anchor in 1984, decades before craft beer was considered a viable career choice, and has watched the entire industry grow up alongside Anchor. He's a company man, and in 38 years of brewing, this is the only place he's brewed. Assistant Brewmaster Dane Volek started at Anchor 14 years ago and, like Riley, has only worked at Anchor. He leads the R&D side of the brewery now, making beers on the smaller brewhouse across the street from the production brewery at Anchor Public Taps, but he shares a similar love of the company and their unique brewing culture. There's a pride in craft, in the workmanship, and a genuine love of the brewery's history and sense of place. The beer they focus on, of course, is the ubiquitous Anchor Steam—brewed with pitched lager yeast, but fermented relatively warm in shallow open top fermenters in a temperature-controlled room but without temperature control in the vessels. It echoes the 1800's approach to steam beer, but with a focus on sanitation and consistency that those earlier brewers could only dream of. Today, the brewery on the corner of De Haro and Mariposa Streets in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco looks much like it did when Fritz Maytag was actively running the business, strategic production upgrades notwithstanding. And while the neighborhood around it has changed measurably over the past 50 years, the brewery's flagship beers have not. Some things ought to change, and some things should not. In this episode, Riley and Volek talk about style, history, and process for the flagship beers that Anchor focuses on—Steam, Porter, and Liberty Ale. Along the way, they discuss: the historical significance of Steam mechanics of open fermentation employing house yeast across a range of styles and ABVs fermenting with the same yeast under head pressure brewing blended batches with open and closed fermentation the value and importance of the story behind the beer And more. "TWIT HATS FTGITW" as nobody is calling it, is the new Netflix comedy psychological thriller starring Kristen Bell and wine. This episode gets a little weird. For a sequel of a film that was surprisingly enjoyable, it really does jump the shark. This episode takes a bit to get moving since there isn't a lot to talk about. At one point Nigel starts talking about the 1985 Alien ripoff, Creature. Yeah, it gets weird. But, if you're a completionist (like us) you won't want to miss this episode. In this podventure, we discuss the episode “A Matter of Obedience,” in which Tom Riley subs in as a Sunday school teacher and regales the class with a tale from his youth to illustrate the importance of obedience. Once upon a time, young Tom and his sister Becky were given very specific instructions by their father about delivering medicine to a woman on the other side of the Gloomy Woods. But did they listen? Also, Chekhov's pocket knife, screaming squirrels, basement stories, and... a new catchphrase?
Hosts Barbara Dunkelman and Jessica Vasami discuss episode two of The Nevers: “Exposure.” They highlight the most memorable scenes from the episode and get fun insight from special guests Tom Riley and James Norton, who play Augie Bidlow and Hugo Swann. In this bonus episode, Jim speaks one on one with creator, writer, director, and more often than not, star of the Bad Ben movie series, Nigel Bach. In the interview, Jim talks to Nigel about his eight movie series that began with the original 'Bad Ben'. For those not familiar, Bad Ben is a series of found-footage horror/comedy movies available on Amazon Prime. Nigel discusses his time before the movies and what led him to make the first with a few hundred dollars, a couple thousand dollars in cameras, and his iPhone, and how he ended up starring as the series' accidental protagonist Tom Riley. Jim and Nigel discuss how the character of Tom, an average guy from New Jersey trying to flip a house won at auction, became a fan favorite as well as the movies that didn't focus on Tom and their place in the Bad Ben universe, the Tom Riley animated series, and a bit about the future of the franchise. If you came here for something political stay tuned until the last few minutes where Nigel and Jim talk about Amazon's creator platform that gets independent movies like Bad Ben into the Prime catalog and reimbursing the creators. This system has gone through several changes in the past few years to reduce payouts, and while you can, and should, still see Nigel's movies on Prime, he also explains why he's now an official martyr in TLiD canon for being the first person we've spoken with to be permanently banned from using the review feature on Amazon.

The series was recently launched in the US to much acclaim. Earlier this year, Hayley performed at the Hampstead Theatre in Sarah Burgess’s DRY POWDER. Directed by Anna Ledwich, Hayley took the lead role alongside Tom Riley and Aidan McArdle in the comedy which explored the PR world of New York. Debating the pros and cons of the internet and social media, including friendships and the ability to create a living from anywhere in the world with WiFi. Judith Morgan and Nicola Cairncross ask - but at what cost? In The Show Nicola’s been making the ladies at Write Club laugh when she transposed America and Paris, and reading aloud in her French accent reminded them of Glaswegian! Her week has been creative and quiet and she’s been out to dinner a lot. As Judith started to recover from the bug, she got going with sorting out her new home and two professional cleaners arrived to make it even more habitable. She got her Outlook fixed too so normal service is very nearly resumed. What's Fuelled Their Fire? Just when Judith was beginning to despair, two fabulous results came in from her Baggy Trousers Low Carb group and on the day she too was ready to go back to that way of eating after the bug and in a pre-Xmas health kick. She doesn’t think those two are a coincidence. Nicola’s mentor has encouraged her to re-start her vzine and challenged her to make a daily one-minute video which she started to do herself in batches before deciding to outsource. Phoebe and Sarah are back in gainful employment. Focus of the Week Nicola and Judith debate the pros and cons of the internet and social media including friendships, clients the world over, the ability to create a living from anywhere in the world with WiFi, access to a wealth of information and much more. But does it come at some cost and some risk to the old, the lonely and the vulnerable such as scamming, trolling, bullying and isolation? Nicola believes the internet is what you choose and thinks it is 90% a force for good. Judith is uncharacteristically more downbeat than normal and would put it at only 50% or even 40% good. Words of the Week Nicola chooses Punctuation and Judith picks Discernment. Project Updates Judith can already feel she’s rolling downhill to Christmas but senses this is no bad thing after a hard year. Nicola’s hell-bent on a LinkedIn cull. Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola likes Tom Riley in Dark Heart, a compelling watch. And Dalton Harris and Nile Rogers on X Factor. Judith caught Michael Buble on Graham Norton and tells of the songs and journey that led her on to YouTube. Thanks for listening!
