fWotD Episode 3301: Silverthrone Caldera Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 19 May 2026, is Silverthrone Caldera. The Silverthrone Caldera, also referred to as the Silverthrone Caldera Complex, is a volcano in the Range 2 Coast Land District of British Columbia, Canada. It lies within the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains and reaches an elevation of 2,860 metres (9,380 feet), although some sources give the elevation as high as 3,160 m (10,370 ft). The caldera is about 25 by 20 kilometres (16 by 12 miles) in size and has been deeply eroded, resulting in the formation of rugged topography. Several glacial meltwater streams originating from the volcano flow through valleys in the Pacific Ranges; among these streams are the Pashleth, Selman and Catto creeks and the Kingcome and Wakeman rivers. The caldera contains several named mountains, including Mounts Somolenko, Overill, Kinch, Squire, Ardern and Calli, as well as Petrovsky Peak and Silverthrone Mountain.Volcanic rocks deposited by eruptions of the Silverthrone Caldera and associated vents include rhyolites, dacites, andesites and basaltic andesites. They are exposed in valleys, but at higher elevations they are largely buried under glacial ice of the 3,600 km2 (1,400 mi2) Ha-Iltzuk Icefield. These rocks comprise three geological units: a 750,000-year-old basal breccia unit, a 400,000-year-old unit of overlying lava flows and domes, and a less than 13,000-year-old series of lava flows and pyroclastic cones. Small magnitude, shallow earthquakes have been recorded near the volcano since 1980, but they have not been demonstrated to be magmatic in origin. The main potential hazard posed by future volcanism is to air traffic if explosive eruptions were to occur from the caldera. The Silverthrone Caldera was a source of obsidian for Indigenous peoples during the pre-contact era. Geological studies have been conducted at the volcano since at least the 1960s, but its very remote location has impeded detailed fieldwork. As a result, the eruptive history of the caldera is poorly known and its affinity to the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt remains unclear. The volcano was studied in the 1970s as a potential source of geothermal energy. It can be reached by helicopter or, with great difficulty, by trekking on foot through valleys. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:05 UTC on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Silverthrone Caldera on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

FUTURE FOSSILS

Today's very overdue conversation is with AI ethicist and organizational trust expert Nathan Kinch of Trustworthy By Design (Website | LinkedIn), asking questions like: How do institutions made of decent, well-meaning people continue to behave out of alignment with their stated values? How do we dig ourselves out of a catastrophic collapse in trust? How can we design practical, participatory “living labs” for organizational reflection and facilitate convivial, playful environments for working together?“Certainly one of the world's leading figures on ethics in practical applications.”— Fionn Delahunty, NLP Lab at University of GalwayAs we frequently observe on this show, we need to rework our ideas of agency and identity to adapt them to advances in our understanding of complex systems. Decisions emerge within a nexus of nested, multi-scale dynamics, and our species flourishes or fumbles in intricate symbiotic relationships with the collective intelligences embodied in cultural technologies like states, markets, corporations, and social clubs — beings that, by any reasonable account, live in worlds alien to our own lived experience and demonstrate their own goals and values. Getting them to behave in ways that nourish us requires a much more nuanced theory of change than that which created them in the first place, perhaps even a radically different vision of the links between biology, psychology, society, and environment. And given that AI is a beast of a similar order to these other “egregores” — the entities of collective computation that arise from our efforts to coordinate at scale and then impose their own top-down causal influence on our thoughts and actions — learning how to align individual and organizational purpose can give us profound insight into how to live well alongside (or in the proverbial guts of) newer, more obvious forms of non-human intelligence like LLMs that amplify our biases through lossy compression and feedback, and shape both our desires and view of adjacent possibility. In other words, the “intent-to-action” gap in corporate ethics and the “paperclip machine” problem in our built wilderness of black box super-machines are structurally identical. And if we can “tame” the secular gods of the modern industrial era , our self-domesticated species may actually still get a chance at living in a zoo of our own choosing. If you are caught in a system of technologically mediated social dilemmas — and who isn't? — this will speak to you, and I'm excited to share it.✨ If you enjoy this podcast, please consider liking, subscribing, and commenting wherever you listen: YouTube • Spotify • Apple Podcasts • Etc.✨ Become a member for access to our study group and community calls, and for those recordings — including the excellent raps we had recently on Alexander Douglas and Wendell Berry.✨ Become a founding member for access my five-week science and philosophy course at Weirdosphere and the raw recordings of every unreleased episode! Listen to Tyler's single "Frontlines," a special exclusive on America's Roundtable. Tyler has had the honor of sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Justin Moore, Lee Greenwood, Nate Smith, Lonestar, Randy Houser, Collin Raye, Mike Ryan, Tanner Usrey, Matt Stell, Chris Janson, and many more. A few weeks ago, Tyler took the stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, where Secretary of War Pete Hegseth received an award by the Nestpoint Foundation. On the eve of Veterans Day we also focus on the concerns for those who served on the frontlines with a call to our fellow Americans to get involved in providing help and hope to those experiencing challenges. According to data in by the US Census of Bureau, there were an estimated 15.8 million military veterans in the U.S. as of late 2023. According to the VA's most recent National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report (2024), an average of 17.6 veterans die by suicide every single day. Although this figure is widely accepted, the real number may be even higher by "self-injury mortality," often through overdoses. In May 2025, the Trump administration highlighted the need to honor veterans, stating that the federal government “should treat veterans like the heroes they are.” As part of this commitment, the Trump administration signed an executive order to combat veteran homelessness by establishing the National Center for Warrior Independence, aiming to house 6,000 veterans by 2028. About Tyler Kinch: After serving in the military, Tyler swapped his combat boots for cowboy boots and took to the stage with a passion for country storytelling. For over a decade, he's lit up honky-tonks and festivals across the South, building a loyal following one heartfelt lyric at a time. In June of 2024, Arkansas Country Music honored Tyler as Entertainer of the Year, for the second year in a row. This award reflects not only his artistry but the impact he's made on the country music scene. He's had the honor of sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Justin Moore, Nate Smith, Lonestar, Randy Houser, Collin Raye, Mike Ryan, Tanner Usrey, Matt Stell, Chris Janson, Lee Greenwood, and many more. Known for his high-energy shows and heartfelt performances, Tyler Kinch continues to win over fans and country radio alike. His patriotic single “Frontlines” was featured on national television during a special Veterans Day segment on Fox & Friends, earning praise for its authenticity and emotional punch. With his single “Dancing with a Cowboy” released on early this year, followed by a full EP this past summer, Tyler is stepping into a breakout moment. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 X: @ileaderssummit @americasrt1776 @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Her more than 20 years spent implementing Six Sigma, LEAN, and design thinking concepts have inspired her to take on “wicked problems” in a “VUCA” (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world. Originally trained by Shingijustu (pioneers of the Toyota Production System) she has educated over 2800 people in continuous improvement and innovation, led hundreds of workshops, and coached more than 60 leaders. Shaunte holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and a Masters of Engineering, Design, and Manufacturing, both from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. In today's episode, we discuss what Shaunté learned about Lean in her first aerospace jobs, including time spent working with the famed Shingujitsu consulting group. What did Shaunté learn and discover when she was recruited into her first healthcare organization? We discuss problem-solving in the context of shopfloor improvement, management practices, and big societal problems like inequities and a lack of diversity in some Lean settings. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How does Lean help us navigate a VUCA world? What we know vs. what we THINK we know?  Facts vs. data? How do assumptions get leaders in trouble? Leaders observing leaders? Doing so in a non-blaming way? Helping people go from “we don't have time” to making time?
