Meditation Experience Is Associated with Differences in Default Mode Network Activity and Connectivity explores how mindfulness meditation impacts brain function. In this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and his colleagues reveal groundbreaking research using fMRI to compare experienced meditators and meditation-naïve controls. The study identifies reduced activity in the brain's default mode network (DMN) during meditation and enhanced connectivity with regions responsible for self-monitoring and cognitive control. These findings suggest meditation not only decreases mind-wandering but may also foster a new default mode of present-centered awareness, providing potential therapeutic applications for conditions such as ADHD and Alzheimer's disease. Join us as we unpack the neural mechanisms of mindfulness and their implications for mental health and well-being.Reference:Brewer JA, Worhunsky PD, Gray JR, Tang YY, Weber J, Kober H. In this episode, we're diving into the concept of finding your “norm” or default mode—a sustainable way of living where healthy habits are no longer something you turn on and off, but a natural part of your daily routine. I'll walk you through how to make the Sustainable Seven Habits—protein, hydration, quality sleep, daily movement, limiting alcohol, self-development, and connection—your foundation for success, no matter what life throws your way. We'll explore why having a strong default mode is key to navigating vacations, events, or busy seasons without feeling like you're starting over. I'll also share practical tips on shifting your mindset and building habits that stick—because maintaining a healthy lifestyle shouldn't require constant motivation. Plus, I'm opening up about my personal goals for 2025 and a big, exciting chapter I'm preparing for: my husband and I are planning to try for a baby! I'll share why this next step makes building and maintaining a solid foundation of healthy habits even more important to me and how it's influencing my outlook for the year ahead. This episode is packed with inspiration and actionable insights to help you build a lifestyle that supports your goals—whether you're striving for fat loss, maintenance, or a long-term vision for your health. Tune in, get inspired, and let's make healthy habits your new norm!

In this conversation, Ashley and Nate explore the complexities of the mind, particularly during silent retreats. They discuss the challenges of working with the default mode of the mind, the importance of compassion and empathy towards it, and the necessity of ownership over one's mental processes. The dialogue emphasizes the significance of awareness, the courage to embrace silence, and the practical applications of mindfulness in daily life. They also touch on the distinction between intuition and thought, the desperation often felt in the mind, and the journey of self-discovery that comes with unraveling conditioned ways of being. Ultimately, they highlight the transformative power of coming home to one's true nature and the excitement of exploring new experiences.
In this episode, we discuss Autism and the Default Mode Network. According to Lisa Feldman-Barrett, the Default Mode Network has many names because it has been discovered, named, rediscovered, and renamed many times. I do not disagree with the Science regarding Autism and the Default Mode Network. However, I disagree with the Interpretation of the Data. This IS our Default; our preferred state; the core of the Autistic Phenotype. After listening to this episode and understanding B.3, you can understand MOST of Autism. The only reason you cannot understand ALL of Autism from these two episodes is the amount of Phenotypes branching off of B.3 and our Default Mode. Autism IS preference for ALONENESS and SAMENESS. This minimizes sensations and distractions that interfere with our internal world. This state is NOT abnormal, how society interferes with it makes it abnormal. If you want more Autistics to ACHIEVE, then understand your interaction, interference, and interpretation of what YOU think Autism is provides the delta of how much we are prevented in life. This, of course, becomes slightly different the more profound the Autistic Phenotype is with that specific person. In this episode, we will explore the different brain regions and the goals of these regions as it relates to our phenotypes. We will get into some "Thinking in Picture" and thinking styles. This will be a good time because of a future guest on From the Spectrum Podcast discussing Autism and Creativity. Your Default Life There is a myth floating around that life is more fun when you are spontaneous. That can be true some of the time, but not all of the time. If you want to be happier, more successful, and make life easier, it's time to live in Default Mode. In other words, figure out what works and keep doing it. Living in Default Mode makes life predictable for you and everybody around you. It limits decision-making and establishes continuity. It's a behavior that reduces stress and improves happiness. And studies show that most people will default when a good option is readily available. Of course, the default can be wrong, too. Bad habits should not be used in default mode. And some people claim that default mode means staying in your comfort zone and keeping you from stretching yourself. On that, I'm afraid I have to disagree. My theory of Default Efficiency is simple: figuring out what works and doing it by default is easy, gets excellent results consistently, relieves you from decision fatigue, and allow you to stretch on your terms. Living Your Default Mode Would you like to make life easier for yourself and everybody around you? It's time to establish a “Personal Default Mode.” Success in all areas of life smooths out when you know what to expect of yourself. It gets better when others know what to expect of you. A “Personal Default Mode” is a consistent way of acting in different areas of your life. For example: 1) How do you respond to stress? 2) What happens when you don't get what you want? 3) Is there a behavior you expect from others? Do they know it? Most things run on autopilot when you understand how you handle day-to-day situations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Not all negative thoughts are bad. But constantly thinking about negative things can lead to a downward cycle psychology calls rumination. Rumination is when we have certain thoughts, memories, or ideas, that get stuck in our brain. And trying to relax, unwind, or think about something else can simply make the thought more ingrained. There's a reason for this, and it's the reason why doing nothing is actually dangerous for rumination. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast I have the pleasure of speaking with Hosein Kouros-Mehr. Hosein Kouros-Mehr, MD, PhD is an author and physician-scientist who has spent over two decades in cancer research and drug development. It's highly likely that you've experienced your mind wandering, but did you know it had a scientific name? The default mode network or DMN could be a barrier preventing you from enjoying your life. It's said that the DMN takes you away from the present moment and encourages you to ruminate on the past and the future which I'm sure we all know, usually only leads to challenges with our mental health. Hosein has found a science backed solution that could well be the answer to this challenge that so many of us are familiar with and that's what we discuss in today's episode. In this episode you can expect to learn… What is the default mode network and why is it causing us so many challenges? What the solutions are to mental knots that we experience. Along with whether this could also be the solution to a more productive life as well as a healthier one. So without further ado, Hosein Kouros-Mehr. Understanding and healing our DMN is a promising way to tackle society's mental health epidemic.” - Rick Doblin, PhD, Founder of MAPS What's stopping you from being truly happy and at peace? Could it be your wandering mind that constantly revisits painful thoughts and bad habits? Scientists now have a name for the wandering mind—the default mode network (DMN), a barrier that can prevent you from enjoying life. Your DMN takes you away from the present moment and encourages you to ruminate on the past and future. This can lead to painful conditions—mental knots—like stress, anxiety, emotional pain, addiction, and depression. Fortunately, you can break through this wall to the blissful peace in your core. Backed by scientific data, Break Through connects the medical and spiritual realms on a journey of inner healing. With a holistic approach, you can master your default mode and rise to your best self. As we consider what the ancient future technology should be for optimizing our human-ness, I think we have to start at the beginning and consider the technology we're already surrounded by. The technology our human bodies evolved with. The earth. The sun. Water. Plants and trees. Modern science might finally be able to explain it all to us. But we don't need to understand quantum physics to know that it feels good to go outside. And one person who I think stands right at that intersection of these disciplines - quantum biology, nature, and healing - is my guest today, Carrie Bennett. With multiple degrees in biology, nutrition, and bodywork, Carrie's relentless enthusiasm to learn has made her one of the leading educators in the emerging field of quantum biology. She combines deep research and clear explanations of the complex quantum mechanisms at play in the human body to teach people how to use light, water, and nature to thrive. And wait until you hear how she confirms another download I had a few years back that I'd never fully understood. I think it will blow your mind - just like it did mine. Here is the question of the week. Have you ever been stuck? Do you find yourself ever getting stuck? Those moments when you can't seem to go forward or backwards. When I was a kid – ok that's a long time ago…I was stuck in the mud in my rain boots up to my knees. I could not move. I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 and my brother had to rescue me. I was stuck and could not move forward or backwards. My boots are probably sitting there at the bottom of the reservoir that was being built. I was STUCK! I may have been in a lot of trouble for losing those boots. That's a simple description of being stuck, but have you ever felt like you are on a merry go round and can't seem to jump off. You have a sense of stuckness and are afraid to make the leap off that merry go round. It seems as though you keep repeating the same things over and over and the same scenery keeps showing up. Why is that and where does this stuckness come from? I am sure you have had plenty of conversations with yourself about this. I know I have. It comes from our OLD CONDITIONING…what's happened is we have created these deep mental grooves in our brain and our mind is conditioned to stay in DEFAULT MODE. The brain searches those grooves and voila, I know what I am supposed to do and then executes. Now, default mode can be good because our brain shoots into default mode for most activities in life such as eating, driving, brushing your teeth, and all the normal routines of life. However, DEFAULT MODE also keeps you stuck in the past because Your brain is trying to protect you at all times. It does not want to let go of our stubborn beliefs and habits. Listen in for some ideas on how to stretch and get out of stuckness.Stay focused, stay positive and always have fun.
Do you ever find yourself in "default mode"?Let me backtrack...It's no secret that corporate programming runs deep.I admit, with zero shame, that sometimes when things get tough I default to working harder because it's something I can control -- and I know I'm not alone. This week, I share a technique that I have used to help me shift my perspective when I feel myself diving deeper and deeper into work as a way to distract myself from other things -- only to find when I no longer need to distract myself, I'm entrenched in the bad habit of equating productivity with worthiness. Here is my 5-step audit, a process I go through regularly but especially when I need to recalibrate, when things feel overwhelming, or when I feel stuck.Step 1: Make a gratitude and celebration listStep 2: Give yourself some loving truth bombsStep 3: Check your goalsStep 4: Re-evaluate your habitsStep 5: Make a ditch listWant more info? Your brain in DEFAULT MODE is wired to generate suffering, unsatisfactoriness, or just plain misery - The BuddhaWe are all spiritual beings having a human experience. This means we exist in two worlds, the spiritual & the physical. 99% of humans are completely absorbed in the physical world, having 0 idea that their spiritual being needs attention too. When you are too attached to the physical, the ego controls your life & your mental health (I've seen about 5 angel numbers as I've been uploading this - trust me you need to listen). Do you ever find yourself repeating the same habits over and over, with little thought as to why you do the things you do? When we engage in these repetitive behaviors, especially the kind that bring us the same, unwanted results, it stems from somewhere. Once we recognize the source, we can finally begin to untangle ourselves. If you've simply been going through the motions of life, it could mean that you're stuck in “default mode”. This means that you're living in a cycle without any real awareness of your actions. And if you're seeking change, the only way you can achieve it is by creating intention. In the first episode of Life Juicy, I'm sharing with you a bit about my own journey from a life in default mode that lacked direction, into a happier, more fulfilled, altogether juicier way of being. I'll share the lessons I've learned during my 10 years of spiritual teaching, coaching, and self-development that will help you become a freer, fuller version of yourself. You, too, can shift from living in a default state into a higher consciousness, creating the life you really want to live. It's time to shed the false beliefs that have been holding you back, and start creating a juicier, more meaningful, self-directed existence. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Understanding what it's like to be in “default mode” (1:55)How I recognized my own need for transformation (3:43)Becoming conscious of how background thoughts become our reality (8:54)Realizing your own power to change your beliefs (11:08)Why we hold on to false beliefs (14:44) Let's Connect:Email: marieb@lifejuicy.love Hosted on Acast. DMN (Default Mode Network) is is a network of interacting brain regions that is active during mind REST, when a person is not focused on the outside world. If we aren't intentional about it, it can cause rumination, which increases depression and pain. By using mindfulness and meditation, we can increase focus and mental stamina, while decreasing negative DMN activity. God chose us as his RESTING place and with that, he gave us the ability to use our mind-resting ability to use our DMN activity for our benefit.
