Slam the Gavel welcomes Jeana Kuczmanski to the podcast. He has been dealing with a case of corruption with DCF in Utah where her ex-husband filed numerous false allegations that not only cost her the loss of her career but also her son.  We discussed personality disorders and how when she was first married and got back from the honeymoon, her spouse had turned into Dr. Jekyll and Mr, Hyde. Their marriage got progressively worse and when Jeana finally filed for divorce she learned she was several months pregnant.      Her ex husband was a vexations litigant, with 307 filings under his belt to weaponize the judicial system against Jeana. There was a domino effect of calls to DCF in Utah where Jean found herself being called, "bat-shit crazy."  This cost her her career. And the pattern of legal abuse continued for years, he relentlessly dragged her in court every month until he retained custody. Her ex tried filing Temporary Restraining Orders and DCF was on his side all along, doing one-sided interviews and LYING. Several years later he developed terminal cancer and died. However, Judge Knight in her infinite wisdom, gave her son to the paternal grandparents who were in their 80's and they didn't bother telling the judge that the grandfather had cancer and died shortly after obtaining custody of her son.    The child psychological abuse took a toll on her son when he told his mother, "dad said he would hide in the bushes and shoot you with a bow and arrow." Her son also continued with a pattern of disparaging comments to the point where Jeana is only allowed a 30 second phone call with him once a month where he has told her he doesn't want to talk to her. She has only seen her son for 21 minutes in the last several years. Now her son has F1 Liver disease, is obese and is unable to care for himself AND NO ONE CARES. DCF COULD CARE LESS. The podcast market is oversaturated with NCAA and NFL football content but with Jeff, you get the educated perspective of someone who's lived it.    Jeff has been appearing on both national news and local (Texas-based) news platforms to discuss sports, politics and economics for over 20 years. Jeff's time at The University of Texas provided him with knowledge of worldwide economics, marketing strategies and the economics of sports, particularly with NCAA Football. With the NCAA always finding itself involved in hot-button issues, Jeff Ward explains what's going on behind the scenes.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is worth unpacking the reasons why students are disengaged. Ask the question given an observation you have made. Be specific. “Hey I noticed you have not turned in your history work this week, what's up?” In this way, we allow the kids to present their perspective to us. Mary cautions against being vague in this line of questioning. Be SPECIFIC! Mary segues into talking about how adults can tend to make assumptions as to what is happening with a student and that by asking questions we can better understand and solve problems. She shares a personal experience with the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions program and discusses how it can help parents to unpack their own children's disengagement or lack of motivation. Since 2005 Katie Holloran has run her own business supporting families as a teacher, special education teacher, behavior analyst and sleep coach. Prior to starting her business, Katie graduated from Georgetown University and then earned her Masters in Special Education from George Washington University, both in Washington, DC.  While teaching and working with children with Autism and Developmental Delays in Public, Private, Charter schools as well as in-home therapy programs in the DC area, Katie completed the coursework and obtained her Board Certification in Behavior Analysis in 2010.While she had worked with many children and helped many families since starting as a classroom teacher in 2000, having her first child in 2008 helped her to see first-hand how confusing and overwhelming information and advice from other mothers, friends, family, and the internet could be. The single most effective parenting step Katie took was to learn about the science of sleep, and how to utilize that knowledge to create a healthier and more supportive schedule for children. Since becoming a Certified Gentle Sleep Coach in 2012, Katie has combined her knowledge of sleep with her coaching practice.  Katie co-authored a book, The Good Night Sleep Tight Workbook for Children with Special Needs, with renowned sleep expert Kim West in 2019. Every child and family is different, but Katie’s passion is helping other families to understand the foundations of a supportive sleep environment, and then learning how to apply that to their own specific family dynamic. As a sleep coach with expertise in education and special education, Katie works with families with children with unique strengths and needs across the globe, many who have specific medical, psychological, cognitive, behavioral and developmental diagnoses. Katie’s sleep work centers on supporting children and their needs, working together with tired parents everywhere to create a more positive - and more restful - home life. Katie and her two kids, husband and rescue mutt Zoey live in the Capitol Hill area of Washington DC where they love exploring local attractions, nearby bike trails, participating in and watching all things baseball, swimming, and weekend backyard fire pit s’mores with neighbors.Resources:www.behavioristnextdoor.com The Good Night, Sleep Tight Workbook for children with special needs (by Katie Holloran and Kim West)Katie’s book recommendations:Solving Sleep Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Terry Katz, Ph.D. & Beth Malow, M.D., M.S.The Hate U Give,  Angie ThomasThe Book of Two Ways, and everything else written by Jodi Picoult

How to Get Your Kid to Eat (Almost) Everything Most parents have faced the challenge of meeting resistance when introducing a child to new foods. As they grow older, mealtimes can become a battleground where power struggles between parent and child ensue. It doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to be a short-order cook, and you don't have to make food that looks like an art project to get your child to eat something besides "kid-friendly" chicken nuggets and grilled cheese. Instilling healthy eating habits in your little one doesn't have to be a pipe dream. As parents, we want to raise children who don't live on junk food, make healthy choices, and reach for whole foods at snack time. However, many of us go about teaching our toddlers and young children all about how "good for you" these foods are, which can backfire. Enter Julie Revelant, today's guest on A Healthy Bite podcast. Listen as Julie shares some tips for getting more vegetables into your child's diet and reducing angst at the dinner table. Julie advocates instilling healthy eating patterns by modeling them to your child while taking the focus off what the food does and putting it on how it makes you feel. Dinnertime can be a peaceful and enjoyable part of your day! Children can learn to enjoy a variety of foods, including healthy snacks (and veggies) from all the food groups.  that your child refuses to eat right now.  Julie's course promises to turn picky eaters into little foodies. (Although, take note, one of the biggest mistakes she's seen parents make is labeling their toddlers' picky eaters the second they refuse to eat.) In this 5-day video email course, you'll learn my best secrets to get your kids to eat their vegetables and try new foods, and help you put an end to picky eating for good.JulieRevelant.com Other articles I recommend: If you want to know how to get your kids to eat better, start with a few article on Julie's site and I've also shared some lunch packing tips (although I do like to make mine look like art) and how to reduce sugar intake. The REAL Way to Get Your Kid To Do What You Want

The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2020 25:55

Hi there and welcome back to The Parenting Clubhouse Podcast. I'm so happy to have you join me! Today's episode is about the REAL way to get your kid to do what you want. I know, you're probably screaming right now saying, “Yes, please, give me the real way.” Because ultimately, we do want our kids to do what we want. We want them to follow our instructions. Otherwise, we wouldn't have delivered the instruction in the first place. We want them to behave appropriately. We prefer no screaming, no running through the house, and no whining. We want our kids to be able to follow a schedule and transition from activity to activity with no problems... instead of throwing a major fit because TV time is over and we've got to get ready for dinner. So today I'm going to help you realize what the real way is to get your kid to do what you want, and the answer may just surprise. Oh goody!  And I'll be mentioning my Regain Control course later on in the episode, so for now go check it out at www.bit.ly/regaincontrolnow. Now let's get real, shall we? Let's go to the show. First, let me ask you: what is it that you want to change about your child or your situation or your home environment? You probably don't even need to think about it because it's been on your mind and you know exactly what needs to change. Maybe it's getting your kid potty trained or responding positively to help solve those inappropriate behaviors or laying down some guidelines for bedtime with your kid so you're not playing that back-and-forth in bed and out of bed game. Now let me jump right to the surprise of how we get our kids to do what you want… it's you. It's the parent. A magic pill isn't going to make your kid do what you want. A big wish won't make your kid do what you want. And putting the responsibility on someone else or on your kid won't make them do what you want. Whether it's ditching the diapers and getting your kid potty trained or finally addressing those unwanted behaviors (like whining, fighting back and forth, tantrums) so that you see a lot less of those behaviors, change is likely not going to happen unless you help make change happen. While it may be difficult to hear that you are an incredibly significant piece for this puzzle to change, I want you to know that and to understand that because if you do want to see those changes (a potty trained toddler and a lot fewer tantrums), then you've got to be a part of that solution. What I can tell you is this: if you are not motivated to make a change to help solve whatever issue you're wanting to change (remember what you thought of at the beginning of this episode), or you're not motivated to accomplish a parenting goal that you've set for yourself, then I believe that making that change in order to see those results is going to be ten times harder and will take longer. If you're really wanting to get your kiddo's tantrums under control: shorter tantrums, fewer tantrums, less of a headache for you, something will need to change. Something has to be different. We got to do something new, and thus, we got to make a change. To begin that journey, download my 3 Easy Parenting Hacks to Make Behavior Stop at www.bit.ly/3tipsfreebie. So how do you get your kid to do what you want? It's starts with you. Be very clear with whatever it is that you want to change. Be very clear of the outcome you want. Get the needed help to help you make those changes and see those results. I've got a handful of resources for you. If you're potty training, download my 5 Secrets to Potty Training Success at www.bit.ly/pottytrainingfreebie. If you're working on more praise and positive parenting strategies for a happier home, check out my Regain Control course at www.bit.ly/regaincontrolnow. Help yourself to make the parenting changes you need to make by motivating yourself. Yay, rewards! And most importantly, realize that you may need to change something in yourself to help change your child's behavior Remember, instead of looking at with a sense of worry or fear or pressure, look at it with a sense of confidence, empowerment, and strength. Because when you actively help address a situation with your child (instead of passively letting it affect you), you are moving to bring about change… to bring about the success and improvement that you are striving for. If you've got a kiddo with unwanted behaviors, my Regain Control course is a perfect place to start www.bit.ly/regaincontrolnow. Look at that power within yourself and begin moving because that's when you will begin to see change. Don't forget to subscribe, leave review, and share with friends! Let's connect! This week we're sharing some tips we've picked up on how to deal with picky eaters.

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Whining is what experts call a “low-power strategy of dominance.” Kids do it because it’s what’s available to them. Since it drives parents bonkers, it’s remarkably effective. And it turns out whining really is as annoying as we think it is. A recent study tested whether adults (non-parents and parents both) were more distracted by whining than other sounds. The result? Everyone in the study, whether they had kids or not, found the sound of a whining toddler twice as distracting as the sound of a table saw screeching at full volume. As effective as this "auditory sensitivity" is, no wonder most humans between the ages of two and four learn to take full advantage. Still, there are things we can do to make the whining bother us less, which will make it less effective, which will make our kids do it less, and look who's got a strategy of dominance now? In this episode, we discuss the best ways to deal with whiners, and how to perhaps greet it with a bit more generosity. We might as well; we're probably stuck with it. As parenting specialist Bonnie Harris puts it: "Whining is as developmental and normal in a toddler’s life as discovering the pleasure of saying “no." Don’t think about teaching your child not to do it. Do think about ways you can help yourself deal with it calmly and perhaps shorten its duration." Here are links to research on whining that we discuss in this episode: Bonnie Harris for Christian Science Monitor: Five parenting tips to put a stop to your child's whining Dr. Guy Winch for Psychology Today: A Simple Trick to Get Your Kid to Stop Whining Erin Leyba for Motherly: It’s science: Kids whine for a (very good) reason Jonathan Allen for Reuters: Study: Child's whining one of life's most distracting sounds Learn more about your ad choices. Sarah and co-host Amanda Loudin (calling from her own mom’s house!) have a sit-down with Vicki Lang, a mother of two collegiate runners and a long-time youth cross-country and track coach. Vicki highlights the importance of making running fun for kids to keep them engaged and enthusiastic. The gals talk about the crucial middle school years, a turning point in enthusiasm for sports for many children. Coach Vicki puts forth an intriguing mileage guideline (which takes math-challenged Sarah a few beats to catch!), as well as the beauty of a “progression plan.” The conversation covers the “reverberating” effects of running for kids. Coach Vicki also talks about the importance of proper hydration and quality shoes for young athletes. Voice memos from a bevy of mother runners bring to life the variety of delights (and challenges!) involved with kids and running. Sarah kicks the show off with a conversation with 18-year-old Lucy Williams (middle daughter of her BRF, Molly) to hear what kickstarted her running... Learn more about your ad choices.
