Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!

This episode of Welcome To The Party Pal celebrates the long awaited-second season of the science fiction psychological thriller television series Severance, created by Dan Erickson and executive produced and primarily directed by Ben Stiller. It stars Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. The series follows employees at the biotechnology corporation Lumon Industries that have undergone "severance" — a medical procedure that ensures they retain no memories of the outside world while at work, and have no recollection of their job once they leave. This results in two distinct personalities for each employee: the "innie," who exists solely within Lumon, and the "outie," who lives their personal life outside of work. Join in as hosts Michael Shields and Ryan O'Connell take you into the depths of the MDR department on the Lumon Industries' severed floor to answer all of your pressing questions about the Apple TV+'s smash hit.Timestamps: Minimal White Lotus & "Guilded" Age of Television talk until 15:08, and the rest all Severance! In this episode, Alex starts by discussing how the Trump 2.0 cabinet is like the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park — they've figured out how to open the doors and now they are a danger. The training wheels are off and now they are ready to ride. Alex is also irritated that Trump is rewarding the bad behavior of people like Elise Stefanik with nominations to key positions. For the second part of the episode, Alex talks with his good friend Cole Costello about the election. They discuss what it means for labor movements, whether a new guilded age is coming, and much more!

While everyone is focusing on the elections, we thought we should look at something far more important: The Labor Movement. Because when there is a historically hostile presidency to labor, the only thing that will advance the cause of the working class is a strong labor movement. I want to take a look at the history of Anticommunism within the US Labor movement from both inside and outside factors with the knowledge this anticommunism often left the United States' borders and had deep rooted effects that are still present in Labor today.Slater Mill, located on the Blackstone River, still stands in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. This Mill is famous for being the 1793 birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. I've seen this building countless times and my thoughts on it run the gamut. Mills like Slater, ushered in so much progress but also so much pain. In the struggles of that huge contradiction, workers and their families came together to fight for better lives and were torn apart by the propagandist lies and deceptions, sometimes coming from within, to keep only a handful of mostly white men in power.John Francis Bray, the American labor activist who also spent time in England as a Chairtist, he said“If the word had been in use with us a few years since, then every anti-slavery man would have been denounced as a Communist.”* (Footnote: Gutman, “Tompkins Square ‘Riot'”)As Bray implied, sometimes anticommunism isn't a direct attack on those who push for or call themselves communists. It houses any anti-labor activity and the attacks on the ideologies under the Socialist umbrella including socialism, anarchism and of course communism. Many people believe capitalism doesn't work, however, it works well for the very few,k mainly the top one percent of the population. The system is designed to work in a class system divided into  the “haves and have-nots”, and though there have been reforms put in place to create a middle class, these reforms protected the ones who already accumulated a majority of the wealth and created an even larger inequality between the rich and poor.Capitalism is the perfect system for the white supremacists that require a class system to gain power by funneling the wealth off what the workers, who they exploit, make. Whereas, socialism is a system that puts the workers, the major majority of the population, in power giving them control of means of production that they create themselves. This does not serve those in power and they will do anything to keep themselves in power and continue to profit from the fruits of the workers' labor. In order to do this, they deploy tactics that including intimidation, manipulation, deception, outright lies, and even murder. They claim it is actually the “insert name of group that is going against the capitalist here” doing these things to them. The slave owning colonists figured out that they needed to pit the enslaved, poor whites, and the indigenous people against one another so those groups wouldn't turn on them. They offered concessions to the poor whites and put them in positions of “middle management” like being the overseer of enslaved people in a field or offering awards for them to act as a police force that would be used to hunt down escaped slaves which were considered property for the slave owner of course. This was the base and still very much the mindset of our current police force. In these series of episodes and articles, we will look at the red scare and all the tactics used by them. Please read the accompanying This is a public episode. Ben had a great time talking to Kevin Curran and Mike Munro—two legends of the incredible and underrated Boston power thrash metal scene of the 1980s and 1990s. They talk about the brotherhood and musical vision behind their new super group Kingdom of Tyrants and the band's absolutely phenomenal debut album “Architects of Power.” From Ben's signature metal gushry LOL to deep dives into song development and Mike's vocal arrangements, this interview covers a lot of ground. Rather than proceed in any canned linear way, we talk about Mike's artistic development since his last record with Meliah Rage, the tour de force "Masquerade." We also explore the importance of history in Kevin's approach to song lyrics and how the timeless themes of the Guilded Age created connective tissue between each of "Architects of Power" nine tracks, including the mythological lessons of "Daedalus" and the album's epic "Ghosts of Industry." We also hear from the band's manager and videographer par excellence, Rudy Childs! Exploring the early origins of Steel Assassin and Mike's early band Speed Limit, some great stories and laughs are shared as they drink brews and talk metal past and present. Samples of songs on this episode appear in this order: Introduction: Daedalus (from Architects of Power by Kingdom of Tyrants) II. History Will Tell (from Masquerade by Meliah Rage) III. Okay folks. Here come the serious movies! Maybe you'd prefer another "Barbie" but now we've got the "buzz worthy" award-bait movies. It happens this time of year and there's no avoiding it. Still, if you listen to us at least you'll know which of these films are worth your time. We start with "Nyad" which is based on the true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida. It even stars Anette bening and Jodie Foster. It also happens to be one of the films shown recently at the Hamptons International Film Festival which Neil Rosen and Bill McCuddy attended. And they even got interviews from the filmmakers of films such as "Nyad," "The Zone of Interest," "Radical" and the documentary "In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon." But that's not all. We also cover "The Holdovers" in which Paul Giamatti plays a cranky history teacher at a remote prep school who is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a troubled student who has no place to go. And then we've got a biggie - "Killers of the Flower Moon." It's Martin Scorcese's epic about how when oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one. Neil goes on at length about how he thought it was too long. Which is kind of ironic. Neil also tells how much he likes the 2nd season of "The Guilded Age." Plus we've got "Pain Hustlers" which is about a fictional pharmaceutical company and stars Emily Blunt. So set some of your precious time aside and listen in.If nothing else, this podcast is shorter than Martin Scorcese's movie. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4137244/advertisement

After the Civil War fine hotels were built all along the mountain range that separated North Carolina and Tennessee, each one grander than the last, a sort of Guilded Age race between the wealthy hotel operators flooding into the region. There were many of these fine hotels, from the Wonderland Hotel to Unaka Springs to the Cloudland Hotel. That last hotel had one advantage the others didn't. It sat high atop Roan Mountain, making that hotel the higher than any other hotel in the region, with a most spectacular view.Today we tell the story of the Cloudland Hotel. You can subscribe to the Stories podcast at Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Audible, Spotify, Goodpods, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts...we will be there.Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, y'all!

High Society comes to Texas, 1898 In February of 1892, The New York Times published its official list of the creme de la creme of New York Society— 400 individuals, a mix of “Nobs”— old money families such as the Astors and “Swells”—the nouveau riche including the Vanderbilts. It was the Guilded Age in New York and the city's influence helped city directories become popular across the country. In 1890, the Census had revealed that Dallas was the most populous city in Texas with 38,067 residents. It was followed in size by Galveston with 29,084 residents and Houston with a population of 27,557. Texas' largest city caught the attention of Holland Brothers Publishing, a company looking to expand its market in high society lists of major cities. Dallas seemed ripe for its own list of who's who in society and Voila! the Red Book of Dallas, Texas was born. The volume had the distinction of being the first Red Book published in Texas. And of course, the book's cover was red. One can only imagine the buzz this created in the city. To fill the book's 137 pages, in what was still somewhat of a frontier town, Holland Brothers Publishing needed lots of filler content. But let's start with the preface from the publisher. “In presenting the [Red Book] to the public, the publishers feel they have supplied a decided need of an important element of the community. To facilitate the requirements of social life and place persons in direct communication with the representatives of the different phases of the best local society, this directory is intended. It is here also that new residents of this city may find the names of any and all persons whom they may desire to include in their visiting list, and whom they wish to meet in any social way.” The small volume contained a high society list of 3,245 adults and children from Dallas, supplemented by 333 from Oak Cliff. If the household had a designated day for accepting in-person visits (or calls, the proper term), that was noted. Also included were the membership lists of eight local clubs, four for gentlemen and four clubs for ladies. Based on the Red Book, Dallas in the late 1800s appears to be a “clubby” city. The Dallas Club for gentlemen was by far the largest and owned its own building—a handsome four story, brick and stone structure completed in 1888 for $45,000 and located at the corner of Commerce and Poydras Streets. The Dallas Club was central to the activities of business, civic, and professional men of the city: however, ladies were allowed for special receptions and parties for visiting dignitaries. The Idlewild Club was a much smaller men's club — about three dozen members— founded with the purpose of giving four grand balls each season, beginning with a ball during the State Fair of Texas. It's hard to imagine that the wives of these men didn't provide input for the planning of these events, whether they were asked to or not. The Ladies' Shakespeare Club, founded in1855, was for the sole purpose of studying Shakespeare's plays. Membership was limited to 45 members. The thirty-two member Ladies Pierian Chatauqua Club reported its object was mutual improvement of its members, the social aspects were a side issue. Apparently a serious literary group. Not to be outdone, The twenty-one member Quaero Club adopted as its course of study “A new method for the study of English literature, which included reading current literature and a weekly review by critics. Two other ladies' clubs, the Standard Club and CLMA club, also existed to study literature. The Phoenix Club for Jewish gentleman was for the mutual benefit and mental, moral, and social advancement for its members and had sixty-five members. The Social Ethics Club was open to any unmarried gentleman over the age of twenty-one and its purpose was to promote the social, musical...

("NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The true tale of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the cunning serial killer who used the magic and majesty of the fair to lure his victims to their death. “Relentlessly fuses history and entertainment to give this nonfiction book the dramatic effect of a novel .... It doesn't hurt that this truth is stranger than fiction.” —The New York Times Combining meticulous research with nail-biting storytelling, Erik Larson has crafted a narrative with all the wonder of newly discovered history and the thrills of the best fiction. Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America's rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World's Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium.  Burnham overcame tremendous obstacles and tragedies as he organized the talents of Frederick Law Olmsted, Charles McKim, Louis Sullivan, and others to transform swampy Jackson Park into the White City, while Holmes used the attraction of the great fair and his own satanic charms to lure scores of young women to their deaths. What makes the story all the more chilling is that Holmes really lived, walking the grounds of that dream city by the lake. The Devil in the White City draws the reader into the enchantment of the Guilded Age, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson's gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both.") Rather than calling it a dive, we like to think of it as a belly flop - awesomeness in a less pretty package. In this episode, we explore the making of a 25K+ acre private hunting preserve located in NH established by a local Robber Barron of the Guilded Age and eventually taken over by a discrete group of millionaire hunters. Could this giant, fenced in, private preserve have a connection to the hideout of Ghislaine Maxwell? We don't know, but would love to explore the possibility.

Looking for a home with history? Two different castles are up for sale in the Thousand Islands region. While both homes go back to the Guilded Age, they have drastically different stories that illustrate the region's history. Hopewell Hall is part of what was called millionaire’s row, a stretch of lavish homes and castles inhabited by affluent families such as the John Rockefellers, the Pullmans (Pullman railroad car), the Bournes (Singer Sewing Machine), Edward Noble (Life Saver’s candy), Andrew McNally (Rand McNally maps) and others, who traveled from New York City and Chicago alike to find a peaceful and beautiful area for their summer homes.  Carleton Island's Wyckoff Villa has a much sadder tale of death, destruction and neglect.   Listen as Kelly Burdick and Christina Knott explore this part of north country history, one you could own for yourself, for the right price. The Sound design course is part of that third minor and addresses the wide range of audio production needed in today’s media environment, including for conventional radio, sound for film production, and podcasting. For one of her assignments, Shelby created three episodes of a podcast she calls Gilded Cast…discussing and re-enacting historical events and situations from the Guilded Age. In this pilot episode we’ll hear a recreated dialog of rival inventors Thomas Edison and Nikoli Tesla.

Next you’ll hear the fascinating tale of Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, the fort at the end of the end of the world for those who lived there. During the Guilded Age, feathers were more valuable than gold, a fact which sparked off what we call the Plumage Wars between feather hunters and environmentalists. That story is up next. Then you’ll hear the fascinating biography of Miami-born Sydney Poitier, Hollywood’s first black leading man. Finally comes the tragic story of the Groveland 4, four young black men tried for a crime they didn’t commit back in 1949. You eat what you are and are what you eat, right? There is an increasing number of Americans who pay great attention to the food they eat, buy organic vegetables, drink fine wines, and seek out exotic cuisine. The affordability of food across the class spectrum have become more accessible. The masses, however, still lack other forms of capital (social, cultural, and culinary) necessary to fully understand and enjoy the delights of its consumption. Further, people also seek to differentiate themselves from being labeled as an unrefined eater (e.g., the common person who lives on junk food), the food snob, a gourmet, and possibly even a foodie. In her new book Discriminating Taste: How Class Anxiety Created the American Food Revolution (Rutgers University Press, 2017), Dr. Margot Finn argues that the rise of gourmet, ethnic, diet, and organic foods must be understood in tandem with the economy. She offers an illuminating historical perspective on current trends in the production and consumption of food. Finn also presents a parallel with the Guilded Age as a time of class division and when gourmet dinners, international cuisines, slimming diets, and pure foods became fads. Throughout her research, Finn identifies the key ways that “good food” has become conflated with high-brow culture. She considers how class serves as a false form for social stratification in culinary consumption. Finn particularly focuses on how taste hierarchies provide a false consciousness for middle-class professionals who tend to fetishize cultural commodities. The author provides a provocative exploration into the ideology of contemporary food culture. This piece teaches us to challenge the maxim that humans are what they eat. Michael O. Johnston is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is currently conducting research on the placemaking associated with the development of farmers’ market.
