Have you ever felt frustrated with what is happening around your town? Have you ever felt powerless to create change and have your voice heard? This coming Tuesday, November 8th, is the midterm election here in the US. For many, politics seems to be the one topic we all want to escape, yet we are surrounded by it. Perhaps like the majority, you are a reluctant spectator in the past. However, there is so much at stake lately that I could not open up a discussion on this topic. Over the course of the years, I have been fortunate enough to get a first-hand look at our governmental system.  During my career, I was asked to collaborate with Capital Hill Staffers to draft education policies and share a first-hand account of how these policies impacted our schools and students. I have had the opportunity to watch individuals from both sides of the aisle work together successfully to make a difference in the lives of the people they represent. If you believe politics are "dirty," "don't matter," or "why should I care?" This show is for you today.I think that, at times, our limited understanding and knowledge of a topic keeps us from taking action or, in some cases taking the right action that can benefit us. I know that we can often feel powerless and ineffective in creating change.  For this reason, I am sharing this interview with you today. This week's guest is Claire Campos-O'Neal, mother to two young boys, daughter of a first-generation Mexican-American, and co-host of Go Behind the Ballot Podcast. In November 2021, she put her name on the ballot and ran for office for the first time. She hoped to be the next State Representative for House District-51, which covers much of southeast Austin and Travis County.  What pushed her to throw her hat in the ring was the regret I was sure I would feel if I stood back on the sidelines. Before running for office, she worked as a real estate agent focusing on residential sales. While Claire didn't love the grind of working real estate transactions, she was always eager to learn more about the trajectory of her city, the demographic trends, and what makes a place desirable. After the race for HD-51, she took stock of that surreal experience and felt compelled to create a place for communal learning and growth. Claire and her co-host of the podcast Nichole Ab hope that ‘Go Behind the Ballot' is that home for the curious, the courageous, the compassionate, and the kind. There is so much at stake in this election. Perhaps our beliefs may not be fully aligned, but my goal is to inspire you to vote for your values, what matters, and what type of future you want. I also want you to do your own research, don't take information at face value from any candidate, party, or news organization. To find Non-partisan info on the issues and candidates, you can visit: https://www.vote411.org/ You can also find Claire here:@gobehindtheballot on FB, Insta, TikTok. Support the showThank you for listening to our podcast. How to Register to Vote? How to find our voting location - how to request absentee ballotsIt was not until the 15th Amendment was passed in 1869 that black men were allowed to vote. But even so, many would-be voters faced artificial hurdles like poll taxes, literacy tests, and other measures meant to discourage them from exercising their voting right. This would continue until the 24th Amendment in 1964, which eliminated the poll tax, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which ended Jim Crow laws. Women were denied the right to vote until 1920 when the long efforts of the women’s suffrage movement resulted in the 19th Amendment. With these amendments removing the previous barriers to voting (particularly sex and race), theoretically, all American citizens over the age of 21 could vote by the mid-1960s. Later, in 1971, the American voting age was lowered to 18, building on the idea that if a person was old enough to serve their country in the military, they should be allowed to vote.

We cannot let our guards down now! We must be vigilant as we head into what few deny is the most important election in American history. In this episode, True the Vote Founder Catherine Engelbrecht revisits her very first podcast back in May 2020 with General Counsel Jim Bopp and looks back at our past predictions – many of which are playing out right now in this election. Bopp is one of the top election law attorneys in the country, a Constitutional legal scholar, and key lawyer in the Bush v. Gore fiasco. Back in May, many said these problems and fraud were just related to the primary election. Today, we have seen widespread issues beyond just mail, including the removal of signature verification standards, the removal of postmark standards, vote harvesting, the striking down of voter ID provisions in certain states, and more. It's been a free-for-all to the tune of over 400 lawsuits – that is staggering! Catherine highlights several states like Montana, where True the Vote has taken legal action, and points out ways that citizens can help us push back with Election Day right around the corner. Pray, work, vote!Check out our new launch of Pray the Vote at https://truethevote.org/pray-the-vote/ – the largest interactive election prayer initiative in history. Over 5 million Americans have prayed over the election so far! We are all citizen watchdogs and True the Vote is working harder than ever to make sure you have the tools you need to help protect our election process from fraud and exploitation. Recently, we also launched an Election Integrity Hotline – a 24/7, bilingual resource to support election workers, poll watchers, and voters during this unprecedented time – which you can reach at 855-702-0702. This hotline is in addition to our Election Integrity Report which you can also always access on our website at https://truethevote.org/report-election-fraud/. When director Ángel Manuel Soto received the script for Charm City Kings, he found a connection in the story of disenfranchised youth growing up in a marginalized community like Baltimore- he himself grew up on the streets of Santurce in Puerto Rico. The movie is a coming of age story centered on a young teen named Mouse and his two buddies, who are determined to join the subculture of dirt bike stunt riders. The film, with a story by Barry Jenkins, is based on a documentary called 12 O'Clock Boys. Ángel wanted the film to be authentic to this rider culture. The bikers in the movie were all real and did their own stunts, which look amazing. His biggest inspiration for the film was Baltimore: shooting on location, working with locals as extras, and keeping it authentic. Ángel worked with cinematographer Katelin Arizmendi to create a raw and naturalistic look. He found it a pleasure to be able to work with such talented actors like Teyonah Parris, Will Catlett, and hip hop artist Meek Mill, who were proactive and prepared with what they wanted to bring to the characters. Ángel had to work within the limited hours for the young cast, but Jahi Di'Allo Winston as Mouse was very natural and intuitive, and all three child actors had chemistry from day one, which is hard to find. Phedon Papamichael's latest project is The Trial of the Chicago 7, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. The bulk of the story centers on the 1969 trial of seven men accused of inciting a riot in the park outside of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In Phedon's view, a film is actually made three times: it's conceived in the writing process, developed during principal photography, then reinvented and finalized in the editing process. When working with a director and writer like Aaron Sorkin, the way the film is scripted is exactly what he wants to see on the screen. The person speaking must be on camera, and specific shots are needed to sync with the rhythm of his words, like a poem. Sorkin is not a technical filmmaker, and after their initial meeting, Phedon knew Sorkin would rely heavily on him for creating the visuals. Since the majority of the action takes place in the courtroom, Phedon had to generate visual interest, making sure they had the right lenses and angles to enhance the drama, and to get good reaction shots of the jury and spectators. He used the lighting within the courtroom to enhance the moods and tension, and adjusted the light coming through the windows to reflect the changing seasons. When shooting the protests in the park and the violent clashes with the police, the camera crew went hand-held documentary style. Some of the footage from the protests was actually intercut with real footage taken from a film called Medium Cool, a combination documentary/fiction film by famed cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who shot actual footage of the riots in the park from the 1968 Democratic National Convention. She talks about the power of the citizen - the power to vote - which, when we use it wisely, can improve our own lives and the lives of those around us.Many citizens have watched as private unlawful militias showed up at protests across the country often heightening the risk of violence, and many are anticipating similar possible unlawful private militias intimidating voters in connection with the election. Local officials and voters need to know that groups of armed individuals have no legal authority under federal or state law to show up at voting locations claiming to protect or patrol the polls.Georgetown Law's Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (ICAP) has released fact sheets for all 50 states that provide key information about state laws barring unauthorized private militia groups and what to do if citizens see groups of armed individuals near polling places. https://www.law.georgetown.edu/icap/our-work/addressing-the-rise-of-unlawful-private-paramilitaries/state-fact-sheets/Without a doubt, this election is shaping up to be a historic turning point in American history. Cinematographer Eric Branco discovered early on that he enjoyed translating people's stories into visuals. Eric started out as an actor in high school, but quickly realized no one had any interest in holding the camera except himself. While in film school, he developed an eye and shot several student projects, then found work on film sets in New York as a grip and gaffer while shooting short films on the side. Eric's latest film, The 40-Year-Old Version was shot almost entirely on black and white film stock. Director Radha Blank was very firm that the movie be black and white- in fact, when Eric received the script, it read “A New York tale in black and white.” So Eric came with a suitcase full of black and white photo books of New York when he and Radha met, which helped them arrive at The 40-Year-Old Version's look: a matte texture with a prominent grain. Eric ran several tests to find the perfect film stock for the movie, and shot it handheld with vintage lenses. The movie is a funny, semi-autobiographical story starring Blank as a struggling, almost-40 playwright who is determined not to sell out or compromise her artistic principles and reinvigorates her creativity by becoming a hip-hop artist. The 40-Year-Old Version won the U.S Dramatic Competition Directing Award for Blank at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020. For Eric, it was the third film he'd shot to go to Sundance in as many years. He felt honored to be the cinematographer of Clemency, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2019. Written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, Clemency took a long time to get off the ground before Alfre Woodard was cast in the lead role. You can watch The 40-Year-Old Version streaming on Netflix. With the election a little more than two months away, Democrats are fabricating this fake Post Office "crisis" as part of their nationwide push for universal mail-in voting. Last weekend, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called lawmakers back to Washington in the middle of August recess for an "emergency" session to pass a $25 billion USPS funding bill to promote the left's mail-in election scam. In this episode, Catherine takes a closer look at the Democrats' engineered chaos around the Post Office and breaks down the important difference between vote by mail and voting absentee. The bottom line is, the left's actions are disenfranchising both Democrat and Republican voters and fueling Americans' distrust in the entire election process. What is happening at the U.S. Post Office? The entire American election process is up in the air as Democrats race to find the weak links for exploitation. Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who have long been pushing for an unnecessary universal mail-in voting process, are now fueling this engineered chaos surrounding our Postal Service. What's clear is that their goal is not to see a free and fair election process. In this episode, Catherine discusses the U.S. Postal Service, the delays and failures of mass mail voting, and why citizen engagement is critical in the upcoming election this November. The bottom line is, our election processes are vulnerable from beginning to end – and those vulnerabilities are being exploited by groups who subvert our systems to serve their purposes. The best way to protect voters' rights is to equip citizens for service.  Americans know our electoral process is a sacred privilege. Yet, so many loopholes exist in our election laws which leave plenty of room for abuses of our voting system come election day. That's why we're seeing election fraud across the country play out in real time – mass mail failures, bogus voter registrations which lead to bogus votes, process subversion, disallowing citizen participation, outside intervention... It's outright chaos. We are taking the most sacred franchise offered to an American – the right to a free and fair vote of their voice, their will, for their government – and throwing every monkey wrench that we can grab into this process. It defies logic. It makes one question motive. More than anything, it underscores the need for citizens to wake up and engage. This runaway train is not going to stop itself. In this podcast episode, Catherine discusses "Five Easy Ways to Steal an Election and How to Stop it." As we approach early voting and Election Day this November, we the people have to educate and prepare ourselves to protect our ballot box in this election cycle, or we will risk losing it forever. Articles referenced in The Scroll: The Hill: Facebook launches new election efforts, will expand labels for posts on voting (https://thehill.com/policy/technology/511798-facebook-launches-new-election-efforts-will-expand-labels-for-posts-on) NPR: Ballot Drop Boxes Become Latest Front In Voting Legal Fights (https://www.npr.org/2020/08/11/901066396/ballot-drop-boxes-become-latest-front-in-voting-legal-fights?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social) Washington Examiner: Liberal group sends masses of mail-in ballot applications to voters — many with errors, peeving election officials (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/liberal-group-sends-masses-of-mail-in-ballot-applications-to-voters-many-with-errors-peeving-election-officials) Like this podcast? OUR DOWN-BALLOT GUIDE:President:Don't remember what they used to do, now involves mostly tweeting and golfing.U.S. Senate:Like our U.S. Reps, they decide laws for the whole country (like whether weed should be legal everywhere), but unlike the House the Senate alone can confirm presidential appointments -- cabinet members, federal judges, ambassadors -- and the Senate alone can convict a federal official that the House impeaches. We have 2 Senators who each serve 6-year terms.U.S. House Reps:Similar to the U.S. Senate but while we only have 2 Senators for our state, Texas has 36 Reps in Congress… so our U.S. reps pay closer attention to the concerns of their particular district since it's a smaller area than the entire state. ALL U.S. Reps are up for election every 2 years.Railroad Commissioner:We have 3 railroad commissioners elected statewide, they are currently all Republicans. 1 of those seats is up this year. The railroad commission has had **nothing to do** with railroads since 2005. It regulates oil & gas, and if you care about the environment (fracking, flaring, oil pipeline & production explosions) you should care who our railroad commissioners are.Supreme Court of Texas:This is the highest CIVIL court in Texas, meaning they hear cases that individuals bring against other individuals or organizations. Here's an example: After the U.S. Supreme Court declared gay marriage legal, the city of Houston said the same-sex spouses of city employees could receive benefits the same as straight spouses do. Texas Values, a conservative group opposed to same-sex marriage, got two Houston tax-payers to bring a lawsuit against the City of Houston, Houston won in a lower court, but the case was appealed to the Texas Supreme Court. We're electing 3 judges and the Chief Justice this year. Currently all 9 judges are Republican. Amy Clark Meacham is running in the Democratic primary and would be the first ever female Chief Justice in Texas. Her primary opponent, Jerry Zimmerer, said she is “selfish” for wanting to break that barrier: “I just don't think that's what voters are looking for. … I just think that's a goal she wants to achieve for herself.” She also happens to be more qualified, so…Texas Court of Criminal AppealsThis is the highest criminal court in Texas. So, individuals who are charged with a crime can appeal all the way up to this court as their last resort. All cases involving the death penalty go directly to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. We are electing 3 judges this time.State Board of EducationThis board has 15 positions and 8 positions are up this time -- you'll vote according to which district you're in. This group is really important because they decide what gets taught in our schools -- like this year they are revising sex ed curriculum standards for the first time in 20 years. (Listen to ep 1 for more info!) We have 10 Rs and 5 Ds right now.Texas SenateWe have 31 state senators, 19 Republicans and 12 Democrats - each serves a 4 year term. For a bill to become state law, it has to pass both the Texas Senate and the Texas House. Our state legislature is super important -- for example, if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade, it will be left to the our state legislature to decide whether abortion stays legal in Texas.Texas HouseThe other part of the law-making body in TX. We have 150 House members elected every 2 years. We are 9 seats from Democrats taking control of the Texas House, and if we can do that in this election we'll get to have a say in how districts are re-drawn in 2021, and all the things!District AttorneyThe DA looks at evidence in criminal cases and decides whether the case can be taken to trial. For example, in 2017 our DA in Travis County only prosecuted 1 rape case out of 1,000. DAs also decide how victims and the accused are treated, which is huge. In Travis County, 70% of people in our jail have not been convicted of a crime -- they just can't afford bail. The DA has the power to change that. All your civil & criminal judges & court of appeals judgesThe U.S. is one of only 2 countries that elect judges, and this is always one that stumps people. Criminal judges are deciding things like whether rapists should get jail time or just be fined $400, like in the case of the former Baylor fraternity president and rapist Jacob Anderson. Civil courts handle disputes between individuals and businesses, including family law cases like divorces or adoptions, business and contract disputes, personal injury cases, and property disputes. A lot of people skip judges races, but it's SO important. https://www.nawj.org/uploads/files/annual_conference/session_materials/under_attack/appellate_judges_and_the_informed_voter.pdfCounty AttorneyThe County Attorney prosecutes misdemeanor criminal cases (like they can decide whether to pursue low-level drug possession charges or not). They are in charge of protective orders for victims of domestic violence, and they also give legal advice to county officials.County Chair of the Democratic PartyThey are like the CEO of your county party. They set the tone for everything your local Democratic Party does -- whether your party meetings are consumed with pointless bickering or whether they are focused on training folks to go out into the community and turn out Democratic voters. Do they embrace diversity and new voices? Or are they perpetuating old power structures?County CommissionerThey control your county's tax rate and budget -- so how your county gets its money and how it spends it. They're in charge of deciding what we spend on roads and bridges, parks, emergency services, public safety. In Travis County, our commissioners recently decided to fund and hire our first-ever public defender for folks who can't afford their own attorney.County JudgeThe county judge is not actually a judge, but the county manager. They're the highest ranking person on the commissioners court (which is not actually a court). They are also the director of emergency management -- super important if you're in an area prone to, say, hurricanes and floods. County ConstablePerforms various law enforcement functions, including issuing traffic citationsServes warrants and civil papers such as subpoenas and temporary restraining ordersSherriffThey enforce the criminal laws of the state (or not - like deciding not to jail undocumented immigrants before SB4 made “sanctuary cities” illegal in TX), they manage the county jail, and regulate bail bondsmen. They set the tone for how their deputies handle cases, whether victims are taken seriously, and how mental health is addressed both in jails and among deputies.Tax Assessor-CollectorThey set property tax rates & collect taxes. You've been to the tax office to register a car, and maybe to register to vote. They decide how aggressively your county works to make sure everyone is registered to vote.

Lange her). Mittlerweile arbeitet sie für die EU-Kommission und ich freue mich sehr, dass sie sich heute die Zeit genommen hat dabei zu sein! Das war’s jetzt aber. Haut rein.
