The politics of politics and sports' place in it: World Athletics has essentially banned transgender athletes in elite competition despite there not being any at that level; DSD athletes are in a similar boat. Plus, what does legacy really mean? The president of Brisbane 2032 details his list for Olympic and Paralympic Games.
KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas describes an order handed down Friday, August 19, by Third District Judge Keith Kelly, granting a preliminary injunction of HB 11, Utah's ban on transgender athletes competing in school sports.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Swimming's blanket ban on transgender women competing in international women's events is the polar opposite of the International Olympic Committee's framework suggesting inclusion first and review on a case-by-case basis. Sport's governing bodies now feel pressured into picking sides in what has become a culture war, although experts warn Australian anti-discrimination policies would prevent such blanket bans from being adopted here.
A potential watershed moment in the transgender athlete debate.Transgender athletes have now been banned from rugby league at an international level effective this weekend, following swimming's ruling that transgender athletes will no longer compete in female competitions unless they have started transitioning before the age of 12.The Government has set up a taskforce to tackle the construction industry's GIB crisis.Building and Construction Minister Megan Woods has set up the taskforce to troubleshoot on the plasterboard issues that have left many builders unable to secure supplies, and has also written to Fletcher Building over trademarks. The Picton crash has re-ignited a debate over whether we're too reliant on trucking. It comes as seven people were killed after a truck collided head on with a van, which was completely destroyed on impact.Matthew Tukaki and Nick Leggett joined Heather du Plessis-Allan on The Huddle

An Executive order was recently signed to state that all Americans who can meet military standards, regardless of gender identity, may serve in the U.S. armed forces. This is life-changing for many transgender troops already serving! One of those troops is a Guardian in the United States Space Force. Hailing from South Carolina, Sabrina Bruce was born a male and joined the US Air Force in 2013. She saw the Military as a very masculine thing to do and believed that serving would help with her gender identity concerns. Although her service was filled with career wins, she struggled with her gender identity until making the brave decision to start her transition in early 2017. This decision lifted a big weight off her shoulders until the “Transgender Ban” in July later that same year. Is the ban on military service for transgender people unconstitutional? Eric Merriam thinks so. He’s a law professor at the University of Central Florida who previously worked for the Air Force, both as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer and as a professor at the Air Force Academy. He thinks the ban, allegedly justified by something called “unit cohesion,” is actually based upon unconstitutional animus aimed at trans people.

In what one can only call a Friday news dump last week, the White House issued its formal direction to the Pentagon on how the military is supposed to implement the president's prior tweets, announcing a ban on transgender service. Some of the final details, most especially, what's going to to happen to transgender Americans who are already serving, are still up to the Pentagon. But President Donald Trump's transgender ban may have cost and readiness impacts. Federal News Radio's Scott Maucione has been looking into the costs associated with kicking out service members the military has already trained. He shares the details on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

Fook and Lindsey discuss Trump's new ban on transgender people joining the military.
President Trump announced that the U.S. military would no longer allow transgender people to serve in any capacity. Republicans put forth two amendments to the health care bill and both failed. A recent study suggests that taking a break to play some video games might be one of the best ways to relieve stress at work. Exclusive: In a series of early morning tweets, President Donald Trump announced - seemingly out of nowhere - a new policy banning Transgender people from the US military. The only reason given being the military 'cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption' transgender people entail. Nice. So what does it mean? And what toll will it take on the 15,000 trans people currently serving in the US military? Cate McGregor was a Group Captain of the Australian Defence Force, and the highest ranking trans military officer in Australia. And she says she saw it coming. This week's show starts with Mike and Jay talking about two late-breaking stories: President Trump's pardon of former Maricopa County AZ sheriff Joe Arpaio and the president's memo formalizing the ban on transgender troops which he previewed in late July on Twitter. Neither Mike nor Jay think that the pardon is a good idea, as it sends a message that law enforcement officials can ignore the rule of law, so long as it's a law President Trump disagrees with. The Guys differ on the transgender ban, but they both agree that President Trump should have allowed Secretary of Defense Mattis' review of the effect of transgender troops on military readiness to conclude before any action was taken. Next is a look at the president's new Afghanistan policy. Mike actually likes a lot of what he heard from the president (as does Jay) though he's skeptical on what he views as President Trump's over-reliance on the military and downplaying of diplomacy and nation-building. Finally, in the wake of another defeat for Texas' voter ID law in the federal courts, Mike and Jay talk about vote fraud, the intent of these state ID laws, and what a truly honest voter ID law might look like (hint: not like what Texas came up with). Mike and Jay start off this week with a discussion of net neutrality in the wake of the FCC's move to revoke Obama-era rules that prevent internet service providers from privileging content from certain providers over others. Jay argues that this is a welcome backing off of government regulation that is not only more fair to ISPs but should result in greater investment and better outcomes for consumers. Mike disagrees, saying that investment didn't drop after the net neutrality rules went into effect and says that this is a perfect example of a market in which natural monopolies cry out for smart regulation to enhance competition. Mike goes even further than this, calling for an internet infrastructure project as a 21st century equivalent of the interstate highway system. Then the Guys look at the Justice Department's surprising legal challenge to the AT&T / Time Warner merger. Neither Mike nor Jay think that there's much of a case, because historically, 'vertical' mergers like this - where the two companies involved are not in direct competition - don't meet anti-trust guidelines. Mike thinks this is probably a negotiating strategy on the part of the Justice Department and that an out-of-court settlement will ultimately be reached. Next, it's a look at the latest challenge to President Trump's ban on transgender troops. Both Mike and Jay agree that the federal judges ruling against the ban made the right call, and they also both have trouble understanding what rational reason the president would have for attempting to change policy in this area. Finally, Mike and Jay discuss the latest sexual harassment allegations on Capitol Hill involving long-time Democratic Representative John Conyers, new allegations against Democratic Senator Al Franken, as well as President Trump's semi-endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore.
