Ihor Verys, is a distinguished ultramarathon runner based in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Originally from Chornomorsk, Ukraine, he moved to Canada in 2015 at the age of 20 to pursue studies at Assiniboine College in Brandon, Manitoba. Initially taking up running for mental well-being, Verys transitioned from road running to trail and ultramarathon events during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2024, Verys achieved international recognition by completing the Barkley Marathon in Tennessee, a race notorious for its grueling conditions and high failure rate. He finished in 58 hours, 44 minutes, and 59 seconds, becoming the first Canadian(and Ukranian) to complete the race. Instead of our regular “Couple of the Quarter” episode, we are bringing to you a “Duo of the Quarter.” On Sat, Oct 21 at 7am local time, the individual world championships of backyard ultra running commenced in Bell Buckle, Tennessee. The format sees racers run a 4.17-mile loop, called a “yard” in backyard ultrarunning, within a one-hour time limit, after which all finishers within the allotted time are tied for first place, and must present on the start line on the hour to go again. This continues until there is only one runner left standing, who must complete a solo yard to be awarded the win.  After completing 107 yards & hours and covering 446 miles/718km, Ukrainian-Canadian and past guest Ihor Verys was the last person to DNF, assisting Harvey Lewis to a world record win.  Racers were allowed only one person to crew and support them for the duration of the race, and he entrusted 52 year old friend and fellow ultrarunner Marina Striker with that task.  To say she delivered is an understatement, and during this conversation you will hear how instrumental Marina's experience and support was in Ihor's success.  You will also be treated with a few stories of things Ihor does not remember during the 5 days of running and you will get a glimpse into the militaristic discipline and mindset required by both crew and runner to keep moving for 107 hours straight. This past week has been a whirlwind for current events in the craft beer world.  So much in fact that ATB had to tag in a few friends to help explain.  To start Tom Peters, proprietor of Monk's Cafe in Philadelphia, and Adam Harbaugh, @lambic.info, talk about the sudden passing of Armand Debelder, owner and master blender of Drie Fonteinen.  In the second half of this episode ATB goes international with two very special guests.  First up is Ihor Chertov, head brewer at Pravda Brewing in Lviv, Ukraine.  Despite the difficult circumstances in his country listen in to find out how Ihor and Pravda have been a positive force for their community and for refugees fleeing the eastern part of Ukraine while still managing to brew beer!   Lana Svitankova, Ukraine's first ever cicerone, joins us after to bring attention to a beer campaign, Drinkers For Ukraine, to help the people of Ukraine.On a side note, please join us in congratulating Tom Peters on the 25th Anniversary of Monk's Cafe.  For any business to survive and thrive for 25 years is a remarkable accomplishment and the fact that they were able to make it through the pandemic is a testament to the entire team and the great community that has supported and continues to support Monk's Cafe.  Congrats to 25 years and here's to 25 more Tom!
