Laura welcomes Dr. Shanil Ebrahim, Partner at Deloitte Canada, where he shares how he learned how to stop using layers of technical jargon that were preventing clients from identifying clear, actionable next steps. In this episode you will learn: How Shanil decided to make the pivot from research clinician to consultant due to his desire to have more immediate impact on more complex healthcare issues. How ‘branding' and identifying your brand is relevant and valuable even for roles outside of marketing and communication departments in organizations…including yours! How Shanil learned to walk the fine balance between showing expertise and ensuring clarity with his team and his clients after making the mistake of bringing in subject matter experts and used ‘consulting speak'... and ended up getting feedback to improve his ability to communicate. How Shanil's reflection on his discomfort with the idea of ‘power' and his personal history influenced him to speak up on issues that mattered to him when he found himself elevated to a leadership position in his company - including on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within Deloitte.   24 Hour Challenge: Complete a personal ‘SWOT' analysis: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats that you are putting on yourself? What do you excel at? Where do you struggle or what criticism do you receive? Is there a need in your organization where you can step up? What obstacles do you currently face (real or perceived), and what changes can you navigate them?   About Dr. Shanil Ebrahim: Dr. Shanil Ebrahim is a Partner at Deloitte and leads the National Life Sciences and Healthcare Consulting Business in Canada, and served as a Clinical Epidemiologist and a Researcher at multiple institutions in Canada, USA, Switzerland and Netherlands. He is a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders in government, public, and private sectors, and leads complex business and tech-enabled transformations. So many of us focus on becoming an expert in our professional field. But what if instead, we wanted to become visionaries? Not THAT kind of visionary, mind you -- the over-hyped media machines that become the business world equivalents of the Kardashians. But instead, a type of useful, practical, attainable, and much-needed visionary. On this episode we begin to unpack what it means to be a visionary. With guidance from Andrew Davis, a speaker, author, and creator of the “Quest Matrix,” we begin to chart a path away from Expertville toward some new territory -- a place where we can resonate deeper in a world trending shallow, and yes, build our businesses and leave our legacies. That place? Visionary Town.Along the way, we hear from John Bonini, director of marketing at Databox, content marketing expert, and prolific side project creator who recently launched Some Good Content, a membership group that fosters engaging conversations and shares resources for marketers searching to create better content. John's on his own path toward becoming a visionary, driven by questions that, as Drew says, Google can't answer. But he's currently at a crossroads -- one we all face, too. What will he decide?

Speaker Sérgio Brodsky Type Live Conversation About this conversation Aggressive urbanisation and middle-class growth have compromised the delivery of appropriate public utility services for urban residents' wellbeing worldwide. Enters Urban Brand-Utility (UBU), the emerging thinking and practice reframing brand communications as a catalyst for sustainable development via people-public-private-partnerships and radically innovative use of media. UBU applications happen when brand communications touchpoints elevate their role from being mere messengers to delivering public utility services that supplement cities' infrastructure, alleviating urbanisation’s growing pains. By enhancing instead of interrupting people's moments this approach is a response to the decay of the advertising model, offering the conditions for ingenious advertising to step up from eye-catching stunts onto an infrastructure of creative, urban resiliency. To enable a virtuous circle, cities would then arrange for tax breaks, rebates, R&D contributions or other types of incentives. This way, marketing budgets are effectively turned into marketing investment funds where returns are reaped by brand, monetary and societal metrics. It’s the intangibles, it’s the meaning. - Fundamentally, return on investment will always be a key consideration. Going forward, this will mean creating value beyond the billboard. - The DNA for any advertising campaign is a big idea, which often comes from a big ego. This idea is only expressed once we’re interrupted. - Advertising does not change behaviour, it only prompts our behaviour. The context upon which the advertisement takes place changes behaviour. - Brands that are good for people are also great for business. “If you only build your brand, you will die. If you just sell your product, you’ll become irrelevant. It’s an orchestration of both, you need to sell your stuff and your story.” - Sérgio Brodsky Sérgio's Linkedin: Sérgio Brodsky Sérgio's Twitter: @brandKzar Join Us Did you enjoy the conversation? Companies create culture either intentionally or unwittingly. Creating a culture code allows you to take an active role in purposefully and mindfully creating your culture. Your culture code signals, both internally and externally, the values and beliefs your company is committed to. So, what is a culture code?   Show Notes [0:42] Question: Question: What is a Culture Code? Directly from Inbound Organization, a culture code is, “an outline or slide deck that shows the key aspects of your beliefs, values, and aspirations and the type of environment you want to create. The culture code helps prospective applicants, employees, partners and vendors and even customers understand how you view your business and people.” A culture code serves a number of functions both internally and externally. From the standpoint of internal leadership, it forces your leadership to be clear and transparent about the kind of company they are trying to create. It also sets expectations for your employees. Your culture code also functions as a measure of what you say versus what you do and holds your organization accountable. Externally, your culture code signals your beliefs and values as a company. A culture code helps to differentiate you from all other companies. This can play an important part in attracting and retaining the kinds of employees you want to work with. Additionally, the process of documenting your culture code is important in and of itself. Having it shows people that the culture you are creating is something you value. How do you know if you’ve got the right team to grow your business? What are the next steps to get growth underway? How do you know what to aim for – how do you set your growth goals and objectives? Do you think that using the right technology is essential in modern marketing? What type of technology is most important right now? And is it important to grow fast? What are some marketing strategies that are particularly successful at the moment for fast growth? [Tweet ""If your company is not growing, look at the people in your team." @bobruffolo #BusinessGrowth"] Software I couldn't live without What software do you currently use in your business that if someone took away from you, it would significantly impact your marketing success? Hubspot [Marketing automation software] Hotjar [Conversion rate improvement software] What software don't you use, but you've heard good things about, and you've intended to try at some point in the near future? Pokémon GO [Augmented reality game] My number 1 takeaway What's the single most important step from our discussion that our listeners need to take away and implement in their businesses?
