In this episode, Soheb Niazi interviews Laurence Gautier about the history of two Muslim educational institutions – Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia – and what these reveal about the politics of Muslim identity and the position of Muslims in post-Partition India. That topic is the subject of Gautier's new book, Between Nation and ‘Community': Muslim Universities and Indian Politics after Partition, published earlier this year by Cambridge University Press. Soheb Niazi was formerly a Research Fellow here at IIAS, and he is currently a Gerda Henkel Postdoctoral Fellow at the Freie Universität, Berlin. Laurence Gautier is a researcher at the Centre de Sciences Humaines, New Delhi. She completed her PhD in History at the University of Cambridge and taught for four years at O.P. Jindal Global University, near Delhi. She writes on Muslim politics, secularism, nation-building, and university politics in post-independence India. Hosted on Acast. Can a Muslim university be an Indian university? These are the first words in Dr Laurence Gautier's book Between Nation and ‘Community' - Muslim Universities & Indian Politics after Partition, in which she explores the history, nature and contribution of India's leading Muslim universities - Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI), two institutions which in her words acted, “as crucibles for competing conceptions of ‘Indian Muslimness' in post-independence India.” This MBM conversation is with researcher and author, Laurence Gautier where we discuss how these universities, their members and students played key roles in recognising the needs of a new India in terms of education, nation-building and social reform. We dive deeper into debates and contestation of ideas around the Indian Muslim identity that continues to evolve and the ways in which many figures, men and women, both worked towards making it more encompassing and holistic, despite the internal and external challenges. The conversation also sheds some light on caste-based politics, women's participation in universities, and the possible future roles of both these universities in the making of modern India. In this episode we use abbreviations - ‘AMU' for Aligarh Muslim University and ‘JMI' for Jamia Millia Islamia.About Dr Laurence Gautier:Laurence Gautier is a researcher at the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi. In this captivating episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham engages in an inspiring dialogue with Masoom Reza, a remarkable individual hailing from Bihar's West Champaran. His early life was marked by adversity when, in the third grade, he was diagnosed with Stevens- Johnson syndrome, a condition causing skin deterioration due to a medicine reaction. Tragically, by the age of 8, he had lost his sight entirely. Born into a farming family, young Masoom's world was forever changed. Facing the challenge of blindness at such a tender age was undeniably disheartening, with few role models to look up to. However, Masoom's indomitable spirit would eventually lead him to become a budding lawyer, an academic teaching law at Jamia Millia Islamia, and a poet. His educational journey began at a special school for blind students. Sadly, opportunities to study subjects like science and math were limited for visually impaired students. The turning point came in 2017, as the demand for accessibility and the rights of persons with disabilities gained momentum following the 2016 Disabilities Act. Masoom seized the power of law as a catalyst for change. He shared his admissions struggles as a blind student, navigating the extensive reading demands of law studies. Despite these challenges, he achieved an impressive educational background, including a bachelor's degree from Jamia Millia Islamia, an LLM from NLSIU, and a PG Diploma from NALSAR. His journey continued into the field of intellectual property rights law, where he interned with a prominent intellectual property law firm. However, driven by a desire to explore the academic domain, he transitioned into a role as a guest lecturer at Jamia. Masoom Reza is also a Javed Abidi Fellow, a prestigious fellowship offered by the National Centre for Promotion of Disabled Persons (NCPEDP). Balancing his teaching responsibilities with his fellowship, Masoom also finds solace in poetry, which he graciously shared during the conclusion of this enlightening conversation. His life journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the profound impact one individual can make in advocating for accessibility and inclusion. Tune in to Eyeway Conversations to hear Masoom Reza's inspiring story and gain valuable insights into his world of law, academia, and advocacy. A new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on May 26, 2023, entitled, “Association of mutation and expression of the brother of the regulator of imprinted sites (BORIS) gene with breast cancer progression.” The brother of the regulator of imprinted sites (BORIS), 11 zinc-finger transcription factors, is a member of the cancer-testis antigen (CTA) family. It is mapped to chromosome number 20q13.2 and this region is genetically linked to the early onset of breast cancer. In the current study, researchers Mohammad Salman Akhtar, Naseem Akhter, Arshi Talat, Raed A. Alharbi, Abdulmajeed A.A. Sindi, Faisal Klufah, Hanan E. Alyahyawi, Abdulmohsen Alruwetei, Abrar Ahmad, Mazin A. Zamzami, SVS Deo, Syed Akhtar Husain, Osama A. Badi, and Mohammad Jahir Khan from Al-Baha University, Jamia Millia Islamia, ITS Dental College, Qassim University, King Abdulaziz University, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Henry Ford Health System, and Jawahar Lal Nehru University analyzed the correlation between BORIS mutations and the expression of the protein in breast cancer cases. “The present study is to find out the mutations of BORIS genes in hot spot exons by PCR-SSCP and by automated DNA sequencing in breast cancer tissue samples along with adjacent normal samples.” A population-based study including a total of 155 breast cancer tissue samples and an equal number of normal adjacent tissues from Indian female breast cancer patients was carried out. Mutations of the BORIS gene were detected by polymerase chain reaction-single standard confirmation polymorphisms (PCR-SSCP) and automated DNA sequencing and by immunohistochemistry for BORIS protein expression were performed. The observed findings were correlated with several clinicopathological parameters to find out the clinical relevance of associations. “The BORIS mutations and high protein expression occur frequently in carcinoma of the breast suggesting their association with the onset and progression of breast carcinoma. Further, the BORIS has the potential to be used as a biomarker.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28442 Correspondence to - Mohammad Salman Akhtar - mdsalmanakhtar@yahoo.com, milyas@bu.edu.sa Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://oncotarget.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Foncotarget.28442 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Oncotarget - https://www.oncotarget.com/subscribe/ Keywords - BORIS, breast cancer, mutation, transcription factor, PCR-SSCP About Oncotarget Oncotarget is a primarily oncology-focused, peer-reviewed, open access journal. Cosmopolitan Cultures and Oceanic Thought (Routledge, 2023) imagines the ocean as central to understanding the world and its connections in history, literature, and the social sciences. Introducing the central conceptual category of the ocean as a method, it analyzes the histories of movement and traversing across connected spaces of water and land sedimented in literary texts, folklore, local histories, autobiographies, music, and performance. It explores the constant flow of people, materials, and ideologies across the waters and how they make their presence felt in cosmopolitan thinking of the connections of the world. Going beyond violent histories of slavery and indenture that generate global connections, it tracks the movements of sailors, boatmen, religious teachers, merchants, and adventurers. The essays in this volume summon up this miscegenated history in which land and water are ever linked. What makes Indian languages different from other ones? We all know about a mother tongue, but is there also a father tongue? Why did invaders from Uzbekistan bring us Persian? And will English cannibalise every other language or is the future of Indian languages something like Hinglish or Nagamese? In this episode, host Sandip Roy talks to Peggy Mohan about her book, 'Wanderers, Kings, Merchants', which tells the story of India by digging into India's languages.Peggy Mohan has taught linguistics at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia, and is the author of three novels.Produced by Shashank BhargavaEdited and mixed by Suresh Pawar
Our guests are the legendary Raqs Media Collective, formed in New Delhi in 1992, by Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. I like to call them intellectuals-at-large, but their production ranges from artistic to curatorial projects, from theoretical to educational works. The collective also co-founded Sarai—the inter-disciplinary and incubatory space at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. You'll hear their unique blend of thinking on technologies and media, from surveillance to bureaucratic interfaces as deeply embedded in societal dynamics; and we'll get to explore together how they have been producing knowledge as artists. The tidal changes in image cultures; how digital technologies are intertwined with urban infrastructures; how the poetic is also the political; and ultimately the significance of languages are a few of the things that are lingering in my mind and provoking further thoughts after this conversation.EPISODE NOTES & LINKSBased in New Delhi, Raqs Media Collective comprises three practitioners: Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. Good morning, you're listening to the Daily Apple, your source for the latest in Education News. I'm your host Jim Kent, the date is December 17, 2019. Before we get into the news of the day, I'd like to take a moment to thank our sponsor, VictoryXR. VXR's award-winning content, helps kids experience science and engineering in a way that they have never been able to before, while making sure to cover everything within the NextGen Science Standards, and they've made it accessible on every kind of VR headset you can think of. To find out more, check out VictoryXR.com But now for the news. The Hill reports that National Education Association (NEA) President Lily Eskelsen García on Monday said that even though she thinks Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has continued to target public schools, she credits the backlash for DeVos's appointment for helping to highlight national concerns over public education. García added that she thought DeVos has done more harm than good, accusing the education secretary of having "abandoned public schools." Department of Education press secretary Angela Morabito pushed back against García comments, saying that DeVos wants to "see education improve for all students." She also accused the union leader of trying to protect the "status quo." Though many decisions are made on a state and local level, García maintained that education is fundamentally a presidential issue, which she says was highlighted in Saturday's 2020 public education forum in Pittsburgh. DeVos, who has regularly championed charter schools, has recently come under intense scrutiny from congressional Democrats, especially when it comes to her handling of students who claim they were defrauded by for-profit colleges. During a tense hearing last week, Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) rebuked DeVos as "out to destroy public education." https://thehill.com/hilltv/rising/474716-teachers-union-leader-devos-is-a-cautionary-tale-of-presidential-impact-on-public-education According to the Hartford Courant, The Connecticut Partnership for Education, a public-private partnership backed by billionaire Ray Dalio, is looking for teachers, employers and community leaders to help the new organization as it tackles challenges created by generations of poverty in Connecticut's cities. The partnership funded with a $100 million contribution each from the state of Connecticut and Dalio. The group also plans to raise $100 million. Under the state law creating the unusual partnership, board members are allowed to hold closed executive sessions. The partnership said state estimates show 50,000 to 60,000 disengaged and disconnected youths aged 14-24 across Connecticut. Almost 80% come from low-income backgrounds and 36% of boys of color. Data from 2014-2015 show Hartford, New Britain, Waterbury, Bridgeport and New Haven as having particularly high levels of disengaged and disconnected youth. But over 110 school systems statewide have at least 50 of these young people, and about 9,000 come from towns with above average income levels. In order to move forward and further define its program offerings, the board's first requirement is finding a CEO. https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-news-connecticut-lamont-partnership-20191216-f4bnd4dybzcjlkq2jiirbrzcna-story.htmlIn India, the Financial Times reports that A violent wave of protests against a citizenship law that critics said discriminates against Muslims gained strength on Indian campuses on Monday after police stormed a university in Delhi overnight. Many students at the Jamia Millia Islamia university in the Indian capital were injured and dozens arrested late on Sunday, setting off demonstrations at universities in Mumbai, Bangalore and other cities across the country on Monday. Students at Nadwa college in Lucknow threw stones at police after clashes at Aligarh Muslim University prompted authorities to impose an internet blackout. The campus chaos follows days of unrest around the country after parliament last week passed a law giving non-Muslim migrants from India's Muslim-majority neighbours a fast-track to Indian citizenship. The bill, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata party, provoked international condemnation from critics who said it discriminated against Muslims and undermined India's secular constitution. Amreen Farooq, a 24-year-old with a masters degree from Jamia Millia Islamia, said she was protesting the law because it was unconstitutional and designed to divert attention from India's economic slowdown. “This is a vicious cycle to distract the people,” she said. “The protests will keep happening until we get justice.” https://www.ft.com/content/81506adc-1fc7-11ea-b8a1-584213ee7b2bAccording to the Des Moines Register, One of the world's largest banks will reap a windfall from the University of Iowa's multi-billion-dollar plan to outsource its utility operations before students or faculty see any benefit from the deal.Wells Fargo is expected to get nearly 1% of the nearly $1.2 billion payment that the university has negotiated in exchange for leasing its utility system to a private operator, a university spokeswoman confirmed Friday. The university hired the bank last year to work as its strategic adviser on a plan to monetize its utility assets through a long-term management contract.Wells Fargo's contract, obtained by the Associated Press, shows that the bank was to be paid only at the “successful conclusion of a monetization transaction.” Its fee would begin at 0.75% of any transaction's value and escalate if the deal exceeded expectations. On Thursday, University spokeswoman, AnneBassett said the university was anticipating the firm's fee will average about 1% of the deal, or $11.65 million. On Friday afternoon, she provided a more detailed calculation estimating that Wells Fargo will receive about $10.45 million. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2019/12/16/wells-fargo-get-millions-university-iowa-utilities-deal/2661878001/The Fix reports that A male student at Adams State University complained that he was repeatedly excluded from the campus gym because of his sex. A day later, the Colorado public university told him the weekly “Women's Night” had ended. It was an unexpectedly fast reversal, though the administration didn't directly tell student Chris Spears that his threat to file a Title IX complaint against the school had killed the program.Spears told The Fix in an email that he was tired of showing up to the gym all year and being told that men weren't allowed in the space on those evenings when he wanted to work out. Spears hasn't decided whether to drop his complaint in light of the administration's response, or continue to pursue it for retroactive relief. He told The Fix he would “like to see a legally binding document saying the gym will never exclude people on the basis of sex ever again.” https://www.thecollegefix.com/university-ditches-womens-night-at-gym-after-male-student-threatens-title-ix-complaint/According to the South China Morning Post, A top university in central China has expelled nearly 100 international students amid a national call for colleges to get tougher on students from overseas.Wuhan University in Wuhan, Hubei province, expelled 92 students from more than 10 countries for problems ranging from poor grades to discipline violations and failure to pay tuition fees, Changjiang Daily reported on Monday. The expulsions followed warnings to the students a year earlier, the report said, quoting a staff member in the admissions office of the university's School of International Education. In the past, the university expelled just one or two overseas students a year, but the number rose this year in response to the Ministry of Education's call to improve standards for overseas studentsWhile most Chinese students heading overseas opt for colleges in Europe, North America or Australia, most students coming into China were from the developing world, according to ministry data.Last year, nearly 60 per cent of China's half-million foreign students were from Asia, while about 16 per cent were from Africa. KMVT in Idaho reports that Presidents from Idaho's four-year higher education institutions announced a freeze in tuition for resident undergraduate students in 2020.The announcement was made Thursday. A news release said University of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State College, Boise State University and Idaho State University are taking this step to address the issue of college affordability in Idaho.Idaho Gov. Brad Little said he commends the university presidents for not seeking tuition increases. Idaho State Board of Education President Debbie Critchfield said the presidents “made good on a pledge” made last spring to work with the board to contain tuition costs. Critchfield said the board is discussing a long-term plan and explained that state funding hasn't returned to pre-recession levels and internal costs at universities continue to rise. In April, Idaho colleges and universities approved tuition increases. University of Idaho approved a 5.6% increase for in-state undergraduate students. Boise State University full-time resident undergrads saw an increase of 4.9%. Idaho State University full-time resident students paid 6.1% more. Lewis-Clark State College increased tuition by 5.5% for full-time undergrads. And that rounds it up for todays headlines. Thanks again to VictoryXr for making this all possible. About the Lecture: Until about two decades ago, Israel imported 98 percent of its energy requirements from far off places on the globe. Although located in a region rich in oil and gas, relation of political enmity with the producers effectively rendered the Jewish state an energy island, isolated from intra-regional energy trade and electricity grids. Securing energy supply from abroad has always been a major concern of Israeli policymakers. However, with the discovery of natural gas in its Mediterranean waters, Israel's energy-dependent status is changing rapidly. Today, close to 70 percent of Israel's electricity is generated from natural gas; the rest comes from imported coal. Israel's transportation still relies exclusively on imported oil, a small amount of which is also used in industrial, residential and commercial sectors. To meet its growing energy requirement and vulnerability vis-à-vis the imports of fossil fuels, Israel – similar to other large energy consumers, such as, India, China and Turkey – has evolved a multi-faceted energy security strategy, which has six essential components. These include, broadening of import; pursuit of proximate supply sources; constant search for indigenous energy; development of renewables and alternatives; ensuring physical security of energy installations; and promotion of energy efficiency. This lecture will talk about each of these components and assess the on-going transformation of Israel's energy status from import-dependency to energy self-sufficiency that is underpinned by the gas discoveries.
