What if a single event could redefine a movement? Join us as we explore the transformative 1972 National Black Political Convention with insights from esteemed educator and author, Leonard N. Moore. Discover how this pivotal moment aimed to bridge the divide between integrationist and separatist factions within Black politics, transitioning from protest to political action. We unravel the complexities of unifying diverse ideologies and learn valuable lessons for contemporary political engagement, emphasizing strategic voting and political literacy.Through a deep dive into the intricacies of Black political unity and engagement, we highlight the significance of local governance and the often overlooked narratives of the Congressional Black Caucus. Our discussion peels back the layers of political divisions, even within families, and acknowledges the diverse backgrounds of the Black community, including Caribbean and African immigrants. We question the feasibility of another national Black political convention and call for action to leverage political power through strategic engagement, while addressing the dominance of the Black elite in public discourse. Finally, we consider the interconnected challenges and opportunities within Black education and political unity. From the psychological impact of police violence to the role of HBCUs and college athletes in advocating for change, we underscore the responsibilities of higher education institutions in combating racism. With personal stories and historical references, including the tragic lynching of Sam Holes and Jesse Washington, we reflect on the power of authenticity and community connection in navigating societal challenges. Join us for an inspiring conversation filled with insights and strategies for fostering political literacy and genuine connections within the Black community.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/EA_BookClub

May 15th: Jesse Washington Killed (1916) Our history is filled with tragic events that, one would hope, seem outlandish and barbaric with more modern eyes. On May 15th 1916 a young man became the victim of a lynch mob in a case that saw, for the first time, a widespread distaste for, unfortunately, a common crime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynching_of_Jesse_Washington, https://wacohistory.org/items/show/55, https://lynchingintexas.org/bernstein, https://www.npr.org/2006/05/13/5401868/waco-recalls-a-90-year-old-horror Learn more about your ad choices. The first critical examination of death and remembrance in the digital age—and an invitation to imagine Black digital sovereignty in life and death. In Resurrecting the Black Body: Race and the Digital Afterlife (U California Press, 2023), Tonia Sutherland considers the consequences of digitally raising the dead. Attending to the violent deaths of Black Americans—and the records that document them—from slavery through the social media age, Sutherland explores media evidence, digital acts of remembering, and the right and desire to be forgotten. From the popular image of Gordon (also known as "Whipped Peter") to photographs of the lynching of Jesse Washington to the video of George Floyd's murder, from DNA to holograms to posthumous communication, this book traces the commodification of Black bodies and lives across time. Through the lens of (anti-)Blackness in the United States, Sutherland interrogates the intersections of life, death, personal data, and human autonomy in the era of Google, Twitter, and Facebook, and presents a critique of digital resurrection technologies. If the Black digital afterlife is rooted in bigotry and inspires new forms of racialized aggression, Resurrecting the Black Body asks what other visions of life and remembrance are possible, illuminating the unique ways that Black cultures have fought against erasure and oblivion. It turns out, they're here to ask him one big question: what do you think about the American Flag?Today, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf faces consequences for not standing during the national anthem. It started with the Audit Committee Institute in 1999.12:12 -- The progress on board diversity and onboarding insights for new directors. Example: Board Readiness Program from LCDA. "Two important elements for new directors to think about: 1) to deeply understand the role of the board and how that differs from management, and 2) to deeply understand what the company needs and what is the value that the director adds that no one else either on board or management is currently providing."14:07 -- The path to the board and director performance. In Fortune 500 companies and beyond.19:19 -- Board oversight on climate change. To help boards understand and shape the total impact of the company's strategy and operations externally—on the environment, the company's consumers and employees, the communities in which it operates, and other stakeholders—and internally, on the company's performance, KPMG offers a five-part framework: 1) Level Setting, 2) Assessment, 3) Integration, 4) Stakeholder Communications, and 5) Board Oversight.31:48 -- On the "anti-ESG" trend. "You have to recognize the political play on this."36:15 -- How should CEOs and boards approach the "S" in ESG, particularly regarding employee and social matters. The proposed Investor Democracy is Expected (Index) Act.48:27 -- Final thoughts and recommendations for current and aspiring directors: "The job of a director is tougher than it was 20 years ago, but what we know from evidence today is that it is still a pretty good and important job (people are not leaving it)."50:18 - What are the 1-3 books that have greatly influenced your life: Stephen:I Came As A Shadow, Autobiography of John Thompson with Jesse Washington (2020)The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, by Deesha Philyaw (2020)Susan:Unsafe at Any Speed, by Ralph Nader (1965)The Silent Spring, by Rachel Carlson (1962)The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories.53:44 - Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them?Stephen: Mom & Dad.Susan: her corporate governance mentor, Ann Mulé (ex corporate secretary at Sonoco, now at the University of Delaware).54:50 - Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by? Oh Kyrie. Sure your tweet was offensive, but if you would have simply apologized, you wouldn't be on probation and the world probably would have moved on and forgotten all about your silly tweet. But in a world of megalomaniacs who refuse to apologize, the drama ensues. Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I examine the Kyrie Irving story from this past week and how his behavior is emblematic of some of the major issues in our culture. Huge egos, people, especially celebrities, think every word they utter is worth spouting out on social media. And people's inability to say "I'm Sorry." Why is it so dang hard for so many people to simply apologize? I also play a clip from a recent Bill Maher and Bill Simmons podcast and I read an excerpt from a wonderful article by Jesse Washington from Andscape entitled, Kyrie Irving needs to answer for promoting antisemitism. The parallels between now and the Great Depression are numerous. You've no doubt felt the pressure of inflation, rising food prices and the rampant corporate profiteering over the last year. Today economic historian Rick Fair joins us to help us to cut through the noise and figure out what's going on by looking at what's already happened. Rick Fair is an economic historian and practicing attorney at law. He has practiced as a tax attorney for 6 years, primarily assisting clients with structuring high-net-worth business, estate, real estate, and tax transactions. Fair is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and a Circular 230 Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service.Rick has also worked as an adjunct professor for approximately 10 years, holding a Masters of Arts in American History and primarily studying economic history, with a specific focus on the causes of the Great Depression. Fair has also studied the intersection of violence, race, and economics in late 19th, early 20th century Texas.Additionally, Rick routinely studies and gives lectures on ghost lore, folklore, and its connection to society via economics, demographics, and geography. This area of interest has led Rick and his wife to begin a podcast called “Spooky Context.” In this podcast, they discuss common forms of folklore and ghost lore in the Southwest, while examining the stories under an academic lens. Today on the 4th of July, we revisit a special episode. It's been 75 years since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, becoming the first Black player to take the field in Major League Baseball in 1947. Jackie was a specific player chosen at a specific time, when baseball was highly aligned with Black popular culture. But what happened between baseball and Black America in the decades after Jackie's pivotal act? Why didn't baseball become a majority Black sport, like basketball and football? Why didn't MLB follow the culture into hip hop or grow its Black fan base? Jesse Washington uses his own lapsed baseball fandom to explore these questions with guests like Public Enemy's Chuck D, Jackie's son David Robinson, and current players and executives.

[REBROADCAST FROM January 15, 2021] As head coach of the men's basketball team at Georgetown, John Thompson built the program into a powerhouse. He recruited players like Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Allen Iverson. He was also one of the only coaches of color in college basketball at the time, and he used his position to advocate for student-athletes of color throughout his career. Before he died this past August at the age of 78, Coach Thompson had written an autobiography called I Came As A Shadow. The Undefeated reporter Jesse Washington talks about readying the book for publication as well as Thompson's impact on the game. And he's joined by Coach Thompson's son, Ronny Thompson, who played for his father from 1988 to 1992.

Lakers Hire David Fizdale As Assistant Coach To Replace Jason Kidd | David Fizdale Lakers 2021 The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly "finalizing a deal" to hire former Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale as an assistant to Frank Vogel. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday that Fizdale was pursued by "several" teams as a potential lead assistant before agreeing to join the Lakers' staff. Fizdale rose to prominence as an assistant under Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat from 2008 through 2016, a stretch that included back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013 led by current Lakers cornerstone LeBron James. The 47-year-old L.A. native enjoyed some initial success in Memphis, guiding the team to a 43-39 record and a playoff appearance in his first season, but he compiled a lackluster 71-134 mark across parts of four seasons as head coach of the Grizzlies and Knicks. His coaching career dates back to 1998 and includes other stops at both the collegiate and pro levels, including stints as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks. Fizdale told Jesse Washington of The Undefeated earlier this month he went through some difficult days after getting let go by the Knicks in December 2019. "I really was at the lowest place I've ever been from a mental health standpoint," he said. "I thought the lowest point was during the losses. But it was after, when you go through the whole part of, 'What could I have done different? Did I even deserve this job?' You think like you were an impostor. You felt like you got over on these people. You're a fraud." Fizdale explained the result of that self-reflection was coming to understand a "deeper purpose"—the goal of helping players reach their own potential without any long-term personal goals in mind, something he described to Washington as "service without means to an end." "Now that I'm aware of it, I'm going back knowing that I can recognize it when I'm doing it, and I can stop it. It ain't about me no more," he said. "I'm coaching to help this kid get better, and I don't care if I get credit or not. It's about my time with this kid and providing the space he needs to improve as a man, and as a player. And that's it." He'll restart his coaching career with a Lakers squad that endured an injury-riddled season en route to a first-round playoff exit to the Phoenix Suns, falling well short of defending their 2020 NBA title. James and Anthony Davis remain under contract for next season, so Los Angeles will spend the summer getting healthy and should return to the upper echelon of championship contenders heading into next season. So Z Nation, what did you think about the Lakers hiring David Fizdale as assistant coach to replace Jason Kidd??? Comments down below

It's an action." - pg 314 Over the course of four weeks, we hosted a book review webinar entitled The Luxury Of Huddle Up centered around Coach Thompson's profound statement " I NEVER HAD THE LUXURY OF JUST BEING A BASKETBALL COACH." from his outstanding autobiography entitled "I CAME AS A SHADOW" co-authored by Jesse Washington of the Undefeated. "Thinking our way to greatness." - How are we protecting the educational opportunities for today's student-athletes? "There are no Black college coaches today with major influence. We took our eye off the ball." - Recapturing the purpose. Moderators for this conversation are: Coach Edniesha Curry, Assistant Men's Basketball Coach, University of Maine Tracy Jones, Founder, T. Alexander Foundation Dr. Emmett Gill, Executive Director, Athletes & Advocates for Social Justice in Sports Kevin Sutton, Assistant Men's Basketball Coach, University of Rhode Island SPECIAL GUEST, co-author of I CAME AS A SHADOW, Jesse Washington of the Undefeated. I CAME AS A SHADOW is the autobiography of John Thompson, the legendary former Georgetown University basketball coach, who died in September of 2020. Thompson may be best known for his great basketball teams and becoming, in 1984, the first black coach to win the N.C.A.A. basketball championship. Written with sports journalist Jesse Washington, his autobiography, however, tells his whole life story sharing the racism he endured, the life lessons of his teachers, parents, and mentors, and of course, how he built Georgetown into a powerhouse. It also spotlights his commitment to the education of his players, and his efforts to protect his Georgetown teams from the racial insults that were endemic at college basketball arenas.Jesse Washington is a senior writer for ESPN's The Undefeated, a platform for exploring the intersections of race, sports and culture.

This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction." In the wake of the shock and horror of those attacks, manyasked the question, why do they hate us? But the country failed to engagein a serious, sustained, deeply probing examination of the possibleanswers to that question. Instead, the leaders of the Bush administrationencouraged us to adopt the simplistic and aggressive “with us or againstus” stance and we ran roughshod over our allies, turning a deaf ear to anycriticisms of the course of action the Bush leadership had determined totake. We have been unwilling—both at this critical juncture andthroughout our history—to turn a sufficiently critical eye on our ownbehavior in the world. We have often behaved in an overbearing, imperial, hypocritical manner as we have attained more and more power as ahegemon. Our hypocritical, bullying behavior in regard to so many of the regionsof the world is surely not the only reason for the 9/11 attacks—and itcertainly doesn't justify those horribly callous, violent terrorist acts—butwe have failed to even consider deeply as a culture the role our imperialistbehavior has played in the contempt we have inspired in so much of theworld." ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Oprah Winfrey gets first look inside memorial to the victims of lynching The new memorial is dedicated to the thousands of victims of lynching that took place over a 70-year period following the Civil War Oprah Winfrey brings 60 Minutes cameras into a new memorial dedicated to the thousands of victims of lynching that took place over a 70-year period following the Civil War. It will be the first time the public sees the inside of the structure and its 805 steel markers, each bearing the names of people murdered – often with thousands of onlookers amid a picnic-like atmosphere. Her report will be broadcast on 60 Minutes, Sunday, April 8 at 7:00 p.m., ET/PT on CBS. Each marker represents a state county and contains the names of victims of documented lynching from that area. The memorial takes up six acres in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama, perhaps the best known city in the struggle for civil rights. Alabama was also the scene of 361 documented lynchings. Among the more than 4,300 cases of lynching documented by Stevenson and his team was the story of Jesse Washington, a black man accused of a crime in Waco, Texas. One team member, criminal defense attorney Sia Sanneh, found a newspaper account of Washington's murder. She tells Winfrey it described a crowd of 15,000, many "dressed in their Sunday best."
