Ironman triathlete David McNamee and ITU athlete Jelle Geens join us in conversation in Girona. David was pretty much one of the original triathletes in Girona. But over the last year or two, a growing number of ITU athletes have started to call Girona home, including Jelle Geens from Belgium. Jelle was part of Joel Filliol's squad, training alongside the likes of Mario Mola and Vincent Luis.  David and Jelle now do some of their training together. You'll hear: 16:38 We talk balance! "Everyone has their own unique balance and one of the main reasons I moved to Girona was because I wanted to find more balance. I came here because I knew for me to be happy, I needed to have a base and that's why I think I am still in the sport and for me having distractions is really important. Everyone's balance is unique to them." 21:10 Jelle talks about why he does pilates twice a week. "I am way more productive than I was when I went to the gym. Before, my gym session would always be the first thing I would skip but I think it really benefits me. I haven't convinced David to do it yet." David says he does a lot of mobility. 23:00 Jelle talks about doing his first Ironman 70.3 'I think I can be good at it and I think I have a future in it after ITU.' 24:20 David on the next few years "I see myself doing the next three years when I focus on the World Championships, but then I see myself for the final few years doing some of the races I haven't been able to do, like Roth and some of the Asian races. When Hawaii is your focus, it is your focus for 4-5 months and it means you miss a lot of great races." 26:15 "Ironman St George will be very different to Hawaii. Hawaii is probably one of the mentally hardest races you can do. For me, I think I am mentally very strong at that point that it hurts a lot and the race is really boring. I think a lot of people crumble and I am good at thinking 'this is my situation I am in right now, this is what I can do." 30:45 The guys give their thoughts on Sub7. "It's really artificial" "We don't even know what the rules are." This is a year where we have so many events going on and I think it will be quickly forgotten about. I think it's much more interesting to see how they get in St George. 33:50 We go back to Girona and Catalunya. 37:40 Jelle talks about trying to finish his Masters in Industrial Engineering, which he started in September 2011. 'I need to do this so I have something after triathlon.' 43:20 An update from Helen and Rich as they train for the https://beyondtheultimate.co.uk/ultra/the-highland-ultra-marathon-2021/#!/2022 (Highland Ultra, 125km 3 day event from Beyond the Ultimate). We not only explore her mindset as a world class triathlete, we also talk about what's been going on in her life since the onset of the pandemic, including the unexpected passing of her father earlier this year. According to Katie, it was the combination of the “try it and see what happens” attitude instilled in her from both of her parents, as well as her father's sneaky plan to get her into triathlons, that contributed to her becoming one of the world's best. As we talked about her current preparations for Tokyo, we got insight into how she's taken and applied the lessons she's learned since her disappointing finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics. We're really excited to share our conversation with Katie with the summer Olympics just a few weeks away.Show Notes(2:34) Three different time zones and training in Spain…(4:00) A truly international training team…(6:09) Grocery stores, logistics, and technology…(9:06) How has it been in Europe with Covid regulations?(12:22) “It's also been really cool because in 2019, almost everyone on our team had been on the podium for the world triathlon series. When you train with the best, it's normal to get dropped sometimes. 00:23:38 We talk confidence and why Marten generally isn't that confident, until he gets onto the start line, when his killer instinct comes out. 00:25:30 We talk about how the Tokyo Olympic triathlon race might pan out and if there will be tactics to slow down Alex Yee. 00:28:32 We talk about the influence Belgian triathlete Marc Herramans has had on Marten and his triathlon career. Marc finished 6th at Kona, before a training accident in Lanzarote left him paralysed. 00:36:30 Marten is 'super excited about Belgium's chances in the mixed relay at the Tokyo Olympics. 00:39:20 How stressful were the tight restrictions at the WCTS Yokohama? 00:43:30 Inner belief - where does it come from? 00:45:00 "It's extreme, I don't know what to make of them" is Marten's reaction when I ask him about the Norwegian's triathlon suits for Tokyo. He reveals what the Belgian team are doing. 00:47:25 Marten talks about his plan to move into long distance triathlon. "I definitely don't see it as a retirement option after ITU racing." Non Stanford has been involved in and surrounded by sport for her entire life. She was destined for big things on the track and was 3x Welsh Schools 1500m champion, before being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes. But injuries took their toll and Non made a successful transition into triathlon. She moved to Leeds and in 2012, she was crowned U23 World Champion. Just a year later, she became ITU World Champion. But Non has had her fair share of ups and downs since. 2014 was wiped out by injury, in 2016, she finished 4th behind GB teammate Vicky Holland at the Rio Olympics. At the end of 2018 Non left the Leeds set up to join Joel Filliol’s squad. She won WTS Hamburg in 2019, before having knee surgery at the end of the year which put her hopes of a second Olympics in doubt. You’ll hear: *Non open up about the disappointed after the Rio Olympics and ‘not dealing with it’ at the time *How she considered jacking it all in *The key thing she has learnt from Joel Filliol “You don’t need to push really hard in training to race well” *The downside of pressure and being a perfectionist *Her love for Geraint Thomas (as well as fiancee Aaron Royle, obvs), Taylor Swift doc and her Grandma’s welsh cakes Like what you heard? It’s not quite like walking on the moon, but it’s not far off, but sometimes when you are in the depths of injury and rehab, you think ‘will I ever get back to running?’ but this gives a glimmer of hope that normality will resume.  I’ve been on a bike from about week 3 or 4 of rehab, but I am really restricted on the intensity I am able to do and until week 16 I am not allowed to go over 100 watts. I think I would struggle to get off my drive at 100 watts.  I’m doing a lot on the indoor trainer and I have an altitude generator so even thought I am riding easy, I am getting some cardio vascular benefits. 3.30 What are you like as a patient?... When I was 18 I decided I was going to commit to triathlon, and stop proper running training. I still enjoyed running, but I would have had to really step it up and do a lot more miles and drop off with the biking and swimming, but I enjoyed it too much to stop and I was optimistic that I could be quite good at triathlon as well. 03:30 My running coach would still say I could have been a really great runner, but looking back I know I made the right choice for me.
